Board Letter
Suzy Kaluti
Dear Ladies,
I
t seems hard to believe that another IWI season is coming to a close and that it was only yesterday that I was composing a welcome letter for our September/October 2011 issue. Amazingly this year has flown by, packed with so many activities, meetings, major events, and hands-on involvement that the pace has been stunning and, like so many of our members, the IWI Board is also looking forward to the upcoming summer holidays and the opportunity to step back from IWI duties. However, preparation for future IWI programs and events always starts well in advance and even though most of the board will be taking a well deserved break there will still be many ladies hard at work, busy preparing for our Welcome Day on September 19th and for the Christmas Festival on December 2nd. We will also be busy searching for assistants and new teams which need to be put together so that the IWI can function properly and run smoothly. The IWI Board is currently seeking motivated members who would like to join our energetic team and help to take the organization into the 2012-13 season and beyond. Current positions available are: chairwoman, vice-chairwoman, office manager and also on the following teams: Lale (contributors and proofreaders etc), programs (Mum’s N’ Kids, NCM etc) and advertising. So please take a moment right now and think about what you can do to help the IWI in the upcoming year. Even if you feel that a leading position is not for you, our organization always needs volunteers to fill smaller roles and the more people who become involved the smaller the jobs become.
Suzy Kaluti IWI Chairwoman 2011-12
Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions regarding the IWI, the board and any of the positions available which you think might interest you. We have had another year of wonderful social activities and fund raisers starting with our Welcome Day, to our Christmas Bazaar and Christmas Lunch followed by our fabulous Spring Charity Ball “La Dolce Vita” and then rounding out the year with our Summer Lunch in June. In between we have organized many special programs for families such as the Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties and we have also seen our Neighborhood Coffee Mornings continue to be wildly successful. Of course these are just a few of the amazing programs and events we have organized am I am truly proud to have represented such a great organization once again. I wish to extend a huge thank you to the 2011-12 IWI Board and all the teams that have helped us to have another successful season. We have had many wonderful programs and events this year and the dedication of this year’s board members is something to be grateful for. All of the women who have served on our board this year have done an incredible job and each of them deserves our thanks and appreciation! Wishing all IWI members and their families a safe and wonderful summer.

2011-2012 Programs Round-up contacts in the process. Coming to the programs and activities is the main way to benefit from being a member of the IWI. All you need to do is show up. Programs are where you meet people, get to know a little bit more about this land of hidden beauty and 1001 tales. Come out, enjoy, get to know your fellow IWI girls. Finding friends, building a support network is integral to living in a foreign country, it is what allows you to call a place home. I hope that more of you will come to programs and benefit from them the way I have. It has been a pleasure working for you! The new team is already brainstorming, so if you have some ideas, please share them with us, join us on the programs team. Helping out, being a part of the team is very rewarding and it is an even better way to get to know people. All the best for a great summer! Jasmine Bolton-Yüzer IWI Programs Coordinator
We hope that you were able to enjoy the programs that we had this season. It was a pleasure creating programs for you ladies! I had a lot of fun in the circus skills class, as you might have seen from last months article, Cirque du Saray. Our guided tours to Istanbul Modern and SALT showed us some alternative artwork that made us think. Our ‘Myths and Legends of Istanbul’ talk was also very popular because of our interesting, knowledgable and wellspoken host Cem Aydoğdu. Thanks to Ayşe Yücel for organizing, Indian, Pakistani, Thai, Turkish, Italian, and French cooking and baking demonstrations which left everyone with a good taste in their mouth. Marc Guillet’s tours of Taksim and Kadıköy opened up the history and stories behind every building . We got the chance to see how metal is hammered out into beautiful and artistic home decoration items at Anatoli in the Grand Bazaar. Trying our hand at weaving a kilim was an unforgettable experience at the HADD seminar on the charity and how their kilim atoliers are helping the women of Van produce beautiful hand woven art while promoting sustainable development. Derryn Gun offered us insight into ourselves, while Lavinia Ganga helped motivate us into action. We calmed ourselves learning the Deepak Chopra way to enlightment with Utku Oğuz’s meditation seminars. In short, we planned 55 programs. We had a blast. It was an interesting year, we got to try new things, expand our minds and learn, all while getting to know one another and making new friends and

CHARITY
Laurina van Dam
Charity Overview for 2011/2012 Europa Donna Europa Donna is a European Breast Cancer Coalition. The IWI will be supporting a breast cancer awareness project for high school students in Turkey with the intent of forwarding this to the student’s mothers.
Although the IWI is primarily a social organization, we have always been active in raising funds for the underserved in Istanbul. The first IWI Christmas Bazaar was organized to raise money for the elderly home of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Bomonti. Nowadays we are able to support many other organizations too, thanks to the funds we raise through the annual Christmas Bazaar and Spring Ball and donations made by members. All charities we fund fall within our mission: to help improve the lives of women and children in need and the underserved. We mainly focus on the people in Istanbul but we also work with Istanbul based organizations that provide support in other parts of Turkey too. Every charity that meets our criteria can submit a request for financial support. During the past year the Charity Coordinators visited organizations, evaluated the projects funded the previous year, discussed new projects and presented a proposal for funding in 2012 to the IWI Board. It is heartwarming how many people are making efforts and commit their time and skills, often on voluntary basis, to improve the lives of people who need support. Although we were not able to fulfill all requests, we were pleased to help following organizations this season. Cöksev Cöksev is an organization supporting families of children suffering from cancer and they aim to conduct educational and social activities for children with cancer in order to support their mental health. They also provide help to families outside Istanbul who are often not able to pay the costs to come to the hospital and stay with their child in Istanbul while their child is having treatment. IWI donated money for the yearly picnic that will be held this summer for the children and their families. Bomonti The Elderly home in Bomonti run by the Little Sisters of the Poor are undertaking a massive renovation project to upgrade their accommodations to European standards as required by the Turkish government. Up to now they have renovated most of the rooms which has, in turn, greatly improved the lives of the residents. The IWI contributed to the renovation last year and this year again. In addition, IWI volunteers help out the Sisters every week and we collect second-hand goods and clothes for their fairs held in November and May.
16
HADD - Hisar Anadolu Destek Derneği HADD aims to improve the socio-economic means and preserve the skills of young women living in Van who were forced to migrate from their villages and who continue to adhere to the cultural and traditional techniques of kilim weaving. In 2011 the IWI donated funds for food packages for the people who were affected by the October earthquake. During this earthquake two of the kilim workshops were damaged and with help of sponsors like IWI, the workshops will be reconstructed. 2012 Spring Ball funds will go to HADD projects. IZEV IZEV is a Foundation of Education and Support for Mentally Challenged People. They aim to improve the lives of mentally handicapped children with education and therapy, and to help them integrate into society. In 2012 the IWI will finance swimming lessons which the children are taking and we also helped them to find a certified swimming teacher. Mavi Kalem A social assistance and charity organization in Fener- Balat. The IWI and Mavi Kalem are working together for many years. This season the IWI supports the Girls Club that runs on a weekly basis for the duration of eight months. Participants will partake in educational gatherings focusing on women’s health and women rights, activities for developing self-respect, and social activities like movies, theaters and concerts outside the district. Medas Medas delivers equipment to rehabilitation centers for spastic children in the age group of 7-12 years old. On behalf of the IWI they will donate a transport buggy to the new rehabilitation center in Zeytinburnu. The center is in need of a wide variety of equipment. Pink Angels For many years IWI volunteers are running a play area for children suffering from leukemia in the SSK Okmeydanı hospital. Led by Angela Kuzucu, the team visits the hospital 3 to 4 times a week and the IWI has reserved money that will be used for toys, puzzles, books, stationary or any other equipment required for the department. St. George hostel The IWI will donate to food grants for the refugees at the Crimean Memorial Refugee Shelter in Beyoğlu. This project is run by Father Ian of the English Chaplaincy. He is caring for the UNHCR refugee’s who are not supported by any social assistance system in Turkey. Yöret Vakfı An educational organization which trains and counsels teachers and teachers-to-be. For the third year in a row the IWI will contribute to the SMART project, a Summer Art School for disadvantaged children. The project gives children the opportunity to meet many forms of art and cultural activities and is based on a violence prevention approach. Approximately 500 children and families will be reached.

Mavi Kalem Social Assistance & Charity Association Mavi Kalem aims to support children, teens and women in personal empowerment and indivdual development.
M
avi Kalem was founded in 2000 by a group of volunteers after the massive Düzce earthquake that took many lives and left thousands homeless. Hundreds of women and children have been reached by Mavi Kalem and its programs since 2000. Since 2002 training has been provided to women and children in the association’s building in the Fener region in Istanbul. The content of their training and programs is shaped by the demands from local children and women and the abilities of the volunteers to carry out their chosen projects. Mavi Kalem aims to support children, teens and women in personal empowerment and indivdual development. At their Fener headquarters they offer a quiet social space for different ethnic groups and are developing alternative teaching and learning areas. They are supporting social participation by women and the spreading of knowledge and awareness of women’s rights, women’s health and women’s health rights. They are supporting civil participation of local youth and are creating opportunities for young people to do national and international volunteer work. They are also giving Mavi Kalem volunteers the opportunity for an international learning experience and spreading knowledge to other organizations about disaster management and development work. Mavi Kalem’s programs for children are based on the children’s age level. There are “yavrular” activities for the children who are 4-6 years old to help them develop their motor skills and there are art courses for children who are slightly older. Math, Turkish and English tutoring courses are for children starting from the age of 9 years old. This educational support is provided for up to 80-90 students a year. Also, there are drama courses and a “Social Club” which aims to provide some general cultural information within a wide spectrum about everything from a healthy diet and to geographical information for students. Beside these classes, there is also a special course which aims to bring communication skills to children who have problems functioning in society.

Also, Mavi Kalem is an association which works together with other associations, on a local as well as an international level, informing women about various subjects such as health and health rights, women rights, daily life issues of a psychological nature (psychological wellbeing, happiness, communication with children and spouses) and also offers the women psychological support since 2009 at the Fener Women’s Consulting Spot in order to make them more sociable. The association has based their work on demographic and social survey studies which were done for a better understanding of the Fener-Balat profile. The surveys and target group studies which were undertaken have helped Mavi Kalem focus on women’s social lives and domestic violence. As you can see Mavi Kalem has many activities that need financial and material support. The IWI is one of our most significant supporters and has been funded many of our projects; • Fener Women Consulting Spot • Translation of the book ‘Our Bodies Our Selves’ into Turkish • Computer Room • Children Education Program • The World Through Children’s Eyes Project In addition to these projects, there is a “Girls Club” project funded by IWI which has just begun. This project has been formed for female students in order to create an intimate space for them, to raise their self-awareness about women’s issues, to inform them about women rights and develop their self-esteem in society. Mavi Kalem’s primary aim is to create awareness among children and women, to bring them a variety and experiences and to widen the spectrum of their life’s experiences. Underground Paris Romantic strolls along the Seine and scholarly, museum-packed trips are an option, of course, but why not go for the Paris that people don’t see on family vacations and honeymoons? By Taylor Poulin CHÂTELET AND ÉTIENNE MARCEL
Once the historical market centre of Paris, the Châtelet neighbourhood is perpetually under construction and now has a seedy reputation, especially at night. The area around the Châtelet métro is jam-packed with bars and kebap stands catering to tourists and teenagers from the suburbs who flock to Paris to get drunk on Friday nights. This may sound unsavoury, but the area can be fun. Bars have great happy hour specials and the kebap aren’t that bad for Paris standards (here’s a tip: ask for the samurai sauce). The stunning interior of Saint-Eustache Church is one of Paris’s top well-kept secrets, and the Centre Pompidou is a two-minute walk from the métro. Walk a little north to the métro stop Étienne Marcel and you’ll find funky cafés, tattoo parlours and pubs that the ‘real’ Parisians frequent. EAT The Hideout No real Parisian wants to admit this, but everyone, at some point in his or her life, has been to The Hideout. This is a dive bar during the day and a dance hall at night. The best part about this smelly-but-endearing watering hole is their four-Euro mojitos during happy hour. Drink three of them and you are ready to dance. 46 rue des Lombards (1er arrondissement). +33 (0)1 40 28 04 05. www.hideout-bar.com. Le Jardin de l’Inde It is very difficult to find a decent Indian restaurant in Paris. That’s why Le Jardin de l’Inde is a hidden gem among the scaffolding of Châtelet. Here you can stuff yourself with quality and authentic Indian food on a budget. 8 rue Tiquetonne (2e arrondissement). +33 (0)1 40 26 28 67. lejardindelinde.free.fr.
THE LATIN QUARTER
Situated just south of Ile de la Cité in the centre of Paris, the Latin Quarter is home to Sorbonne University and its students. You could spend all day drifting from café to bookstore and winding down cobblestone streets with a baguette in hand. The main points of interest in this neighbourhood are the Panthéon, the famous English-language bookstore Shakespeare and Co. as well as the bars and restaurants on rue Mouffetard. On the weekends, especially on Sunday, the area is scattered with openair markets where you can browse (and taste) all that France has to offer in terms of cheese, produce and seafood.

EAT Christophe People walk past this restaurant every day not knowing that it is one of the best establishments for authentic French cuisine and wine pairing in the area. The meat is cooked to perfection, and the wine list is to die for. Don’t hesitate to splurge and have the waiter pair a different bottle of wine with each course. 8 rue Descartes (5e arrondissement). +33 (0)1 43 26 72 49. www. christopherestaurant.fr. Curio Parlor Curio Parlor is tucked away on a badly-lit side street, and you wouldn’t know it was there if you weren’t looking for it. Nevertheless, this speakeasy – whose pride and joy is the only Nikka (Japanese whisky) bar outside of Japan – is always packed with Parisians seeking a well made, handcrafted cocktail. It is a bit pricey, but you will look très chic sipping your creative concoction next to the taxidermy deer head on the wall. 16 rue des Bernardins (5e arrondissement). +33 (0)1 44 07 12 47. www. curioparlor.com.
LE MARAIS
Le Marais (literally, the swamp) is a wonderful area for young travellers who want to go out with friends, grab a falafel on rue des Rosiers or shop in vintage stores. This neighbourhood is historically Jewish, and you’ll still see synagogues and kosher bakeries, all of which have become popular tourist attractions. The most celebrated pastime among locals in Le Marais, however, is to see and be seen. Just sitting at a sidewalk café and admiring the constant fashion show that Parisians put on in their day-to-day lives is undeniably the best way to spend an afternoon at Le Marais. EAT Chez Marianne Although Chez Marianne is not as famous or well visited as the other falafel restaurants that are located on the same street, it is much less crowded and offers a larger selection of Mediterranean dishes. If you are in the mood for take-away, there is a falafel window on the side of the building. In our experience, most people come for the falafel but stay for the dessert menu. 2 rue des Hospitalières-Saint-Gervais (4e arrondissement). +33 (0)1 42 72 18 86.

Bhutan Land of The Thunder Dragon It is a tiny kingdom of a population of 700,000 people. It’s magical land myth lies in the legend of it being the last, true Shangri-la. Shangri-la, the immortal, happy land hidden away from the rest of the world, where only the ‘special ones’ were permitted to enter.
I
’d been fascinated with Bhutan for many years. I didn’t really know why, just a feeling that at some point in my life I would go visit this independent little Kingdom situated between Nepal, India and Tibet in the foothills of the eastern Himalayan mountain range. I flew with my mother and a party of her friends from New Delhi airport to Paro, the main civilian airport in Bhutan. As soon as we landed I knew exactly why I had dreamed of visiting this place. It is, un-
22
doubtedly beautiful, in the most simple, natural, serene sense. It is a tiny kingdom of a population of 700,000 people. It’s magical land myth lies in the legend of it being the last, true Shangri-la. Shangri-la, the immortal, happy land hidden away from the rest of the world, where only the ‘special ones’ were permitted to enter. Quite literally, a place where Time stood absolutely still. The story goes that when the founder/father of Bhutan, Ngawanag Namgyal, a lama from western Tibet known as the Shab-
drung Rinpoche, came to Bhutan to establish Buddhism. When he first began teaching, thunder and lightning accompanied his teachings, which was considered a good omen, hence giving Bhutan its nick name of the land of the Thunder Dragon. Bhutan is steeped in Buddhist tradition, a microcosm of Tibetan culture. It is obvious that there is no false show of Buddhist culture, the Bhutanese people live their traditions in every moment and action of their daily lives. In the 12th century, the Drukpa

Kagyupa school was established and remains the dominant form of Buddhism in Bhutan today. The country's political history is intimately tied to its religious history and the relations among the various monastic schools and monasteries. The country had no official Parliament until 2008, when Bhutan became a democracy, and on the same day the new young, 28 year old King of Bhutan was ordained. This made it clear to the Kingdom and the rest of the World that religion, monarchy, and the political system would unify and co-operate to create a reality where co-operation would be a measure of Gross Domestic Product. In the mid 1970’s the fourth King of Bhutan, was asked about Gross Domestic Product. He responded that “the Gross National Happiness of his people would be a far more important measure of progress than counting dollars.” This became a guiding directive in assessing the development of the country. The rest of the world began to take notice of this and began asking what Gross National Happiness meant and how could it be measured? Happiness for the Bhutanese people, does not imply a transient pleasant feeling of pleasure or satisfaction, but has its roots in the Buddhist teachings of Truth.
JUNE | JULY | AUGUST 2012
The Prime Minister of Bhutan, Lyonchoen Jigme Y. Thinley, defines Happiness in the context of Gross National Happiness by “ We know that true abiding happiness cannot exist while others suffer, and comes only from serving others, living in harmony with Nature and realising our innate wisdom and the true and brilliant nature of our own minds”. This is beyond doubt a noble Truth, but how can it be quantifiably measured and monitored? According to this Truth, true Happiness is dependent on our own actions, words and thoughts. It depends upon how we respond to help others in need, and upon our deep respect for our environment and community, as if it were a part of ourselves. So it comes back to the quintessential Truth of the interconnectedness of all Life. These seem like attributes of the Heart and Spirituality to me, so I was intrigued as to how they could be translated into quantifiable measures.
of life: psychological well being, physical health, community vitality, work-life balance, living standards, civic engagement in governance, education, cultural diversity and ecological integrity. In 2010 a survey was conducted in all districts of Bhutan which asked 250 questions. According to a scale of 1- 10 (10 being the highest level of Happiness), the Gross National Happiness index was calculated as 7.43! My Scientist mind, was really excited- what an incredibly experimental and innovative country- a country that was brave enough

In 2009 educators from all over the world were invited to develop a plan to immerse Bhutan’s education system with Gross National Happiness. The Prime Minister said “To address the greed, materialism, and consumerist fallacy that have turned us into mindless economic animals, and are destroying the planet, requires nothing less than a change in consciousness and hence of lifestyle. Education is the key”. So schools in Bhutan are now reflecting Gross National Happiness values and behaviours in all their curricula and activities, including sports. The influence this tiny Kingdom is having in the world is epitomised by the
United Nations, in 2011, adopted Happiness as a standalone 9th Millenium Development Goal. That is, the UN has asked all its members to come up with their own definitions and measures of national Happiness. I had no idea why I had been drawn to Bhutan, but if I had fantasised about it, I don’t think Happiness would have been a reason. When I was leaving the country and saying goodbye to its being, I felt an incredible wave of sadness, love, respect and pure joy envelop me completely. Bhutan was doing it’s absolute best to implement and apply in every facet of its life and community the Universal laws of Truth, based upon peace, service, harmony and Oneness through Knowledge and Education. And this incredible Kingdom had taken on the mission to reflect this to the rest of the world. How could we not be humbled and in awe?

OVERCOMING IMPEDIMENTS
Sometimes when you come across certain obstacles what you might need is a different perspective.
Wouldn’t life be so simple and fun if we all could live according to that motto? When spring comes with its first warm rays of sun, many of us feel joyful, full energy and full of motivation. There’s something in the air that assures you: everything is possible. Nevertheless, one of the most frequent experiences in going after a goal (no matter if it is a small change in your life or a much bigger career goal) is that sooner or later there comes a point where you might feel you are stuck. Every plan has its gaps or some impediments. To get over those, what you might need is a different perspective. Consider my introductory image: if I look up at the Alps they loom impressively huge in front of me and I may start to wonder: “Will I ever be able to cross them?” But, if I am in a plane looking down at them I will probably just enjoy the great view and feel happy that I am so lucky to see it. Thus, if you are in the position of staring at your impediment feeling small, maybe some of the following techniques will help you to “get on the plane”.
28
Personalize your goal and write it down: • Why do you want to achieve that goal? • What does it mean to you? • How will you feel when you do achieve it? • What would happen if you don’t achieve it? • How would you feel then? Describe everything in detail. Probably you will not be able to write everything down in one go because desires and thoughts are always vague ideas to start from. As long as you give it enough thought, it will get clearer with each try. If you can’t take the time for writing down a detailed plan, arrange an appointment with a friend or you could join for example a Life Balance Seminar to help you developing a detailed goal plan (see also www.loren-partners.com). Develop a time-activated plan for each of your goals: For the top 3 goals you listed, make a detailed, achievable plan. For example, for losing weight, ask yourself how you will do
that. Will you stop eating carbs? Cut calories? Go to the gym 3 times a week for 20 minutes at a time? Set reasonable deadlines when applicable: e.g. telling yourself that you are going to lose 25kg over the next 30 days is not reasonable. Telling yourself you will begin eating salad at dinner for the next 3 months to get rid of 5 kg, is reasonable. Plan in small steps: When I started swimming in order to lose weight, I did not think: “From now on, I will be exercising 3 times per week all my life”. Instead I told myself: “I don’t know about tomorrow or next week, but I’m certainly going to manage to go to swim TODAY”. As for myself, I’ve been swimming for 4 years now (3 times per week). Try the “only today”-strategy, it could also work for you. A different option of the above mentioned strategy is playing a “crossing out”-game: List every action step it will take to get to your goal. Highlight those you are still able to complete. Make it a game to cross off as many items as possible, no matter how small. Two years ago, when we moved to
JUNE | JULY | AUGUST 2012

“Ain’t no mountain high enough… … to stop me from getting what I want”.
Istanbul, I planned to spring clean our entire house and sort out or label all the boxes in the basement. The enormity of the project overwhelmed me and I didn’t know where to begin. To help myself get started, I divided the job into mini-steps and subsequently took great delight in crossing off all the ‘little’ jobs - tidying a bookcase, washing a single set of curtains. Before I knew it, the small achievements turned into huge chunks of crossed-off tasks and the job was finally done. Focus on the process rather than the end goal: Take each step one at a time and be happy with your progress. The only way you'll get to where you want to go is to complete every small step along the way. This strategy works even for one of the worst impediments: PROCRASTINATION. Perhaps you must make a dreaded phone call. Take a sheet of paper and list every step of that phone call, right down to the smallest detail: phone number, who to ask for, exactly what information you need. But instead of
JUNE | JULY | AUGUST 2012
scheduling a future time to make the call, go to the phone and dial the number right away. Focus on the steps and not your feelings. Afterwards, your relief at avoiding days (or weeks) of unnecessary worrying will be immense. Celebrate your successes! Determine ahead of time what your personal reward plan is. Have frequent small rewards at small milestones of accomplishment and the "GRAND PRIZE" for achieving your goal. This will also help in storing away the memory of an accomplished goal for future use. The next time you reach a road-block, you’ll remember what strategies worked best for you. Review your goal plans periodically to check your progress: Do you know that when pilots fly their planes, they need to periodically check and adjust their flight path due to prevailing, changing air conditions? It's the same with achieving your goals. If it didn't go according to your plans: Why not? Did something
new come up during the year? Check progress and adjust your plan - this will ensure you stay on course. Anticipate fall-backs and decide on how to deal with them: For example: If you plan to get fit by swimming before work, but quickly find getting out of bed early is too difficult, perhaps you could walk after work instead. Or, what if you have a detailed exercise plan and you skip one or two times because you just “got stuck” in front of the TV? Should you feel as if you have failed and forget about the rest of your plan? No! Don’t give up! Even if you don't achieve 100% of your resolutions by the end of the year, you will achieve at least 70% to 80%. That's still way better than giving up on your resolutions which equals to achieving only 0%. Just think about how will you prevent this situation in future: will you ask a good friend to go with you? Or take your sports equipment in the morning to work with you, so that you go directly to the gym?

LALE Features Share the news: When settling on your goal, talk to people in your life about what you are trying to achieve, maybe they can even give you both moral and tangible support. From my experience, you will stand a much greater chance of success if you have family and friends who support your cause. For instance, if you have children, your husband might have to babysit while you are at the gym or taking music classes. Or, it doesn't help if you are trying to lose weight and your family is having fast food for dinner every day. If your family doesn’t believe in your dreams, then look for a support group. The bottom line is that sometimes we feel weak and it helps to have support from a friend to regain our perspective and keep going towards our goal. For instance Weight Watchers work on this “buddy system” basis. If you are looking for a support group for your goals in Istanbul for you or a loved one, I am organizing Power Teams. These are made up of about 6 people who usually meet every week until everyone's reached their goals. It’s a small, ongoing group who will help you figure out what you want, and design a plan of action to get it. A Power Team will keep you moving until you discover and achieve your dream. Keep in mind that the first step is often the hardest. If you face a concrete impediment, phrase your problem in a short sentence: First state the wish/goal, and then state the impediment. Then start telling others: family, friends, colleagues or acquaintances. Even people you just met at a party. You might be surprised how fast you will
get hundreds of ideas how to overcome your obstacle. Your whole world will suddenly grow very creative. Why should it work? - Because humans are born with a “problem-solving mode”. It’s a genetic trait that helped us survive all these centuries: when there’s an impediment, we want to overcome it. The more people you talk to, the better chance you have of finding a suitable solution. That is one of the reasons why people hire coaches to support them through the process of solution finding. We all have different views; consequently you will gain access to a much greater pool of life experiences. Furthermore, people will offer you tangible help: their expertise or names of people who can help you out. Just try it! Role-play brainstorming: Imagine you are someone else, who is looking to overcome the same problem as you do. For instance: just close your eyes and spend a few moments pretending yourself into the life and environment of Marilyn Monroe. Then look at your problem from her point of view and write down whatever solutions come to mind. Then repeat this exercise with Cleopatra. Or Bill Clinton. An African woman. Your best friend. Your five year old daughter. Or your favorite professor from the university. Pretend you are an expert and give yourself advice. The results will surprise you! Create your own “Solution Party”: Invite some friends, let’s say 4-6 people, they could also bring along one person each. Including people from different circles than yours will expand the range of information in the room. After ensuring
snacks and drinks you can start the “solution party”: Tell the group your story. What do you want to achieve? Explain what you have already accomplished and how close you are to the next step. Get them really involved. Step by step: What did you already try? What worked really well? What approach didn’t work at all? After they are all hooked like in a good murder mystery, state your goal-impediment sentence. Now let everyone throw ideas and solutions at you: the more original and exiting the better. Ask someone else to write everything down, you might “kill” some ideas from the start and not write them down, because they seem too crazy. Brainstorming is mostly done in groups in business, think tanks and creativity workshops, because each mind brings a different angle of vision especially if people come from different cultures. If you’re working on a project and find yourself stuck you might try to look at an “Oblique card” (you can search for it on the net). This is a card which contains a single, often inscrutable, question or statement which can help keep your mind open. Some examples are: “Your mistake was a hidden intention”, “Don’t avoid what is easy”, “Shut the door and listen from outside”. Conduct your own “experiment”: Have you ever seen one of the various “hidden camera” shows on TV? Where someone does something silly, like wearing funny clothes, offering really curious services to innocent pedestrians or pretending to speak into an oversized cell phone? Would these people do these things in their “real life” too? Probably not. Why? Because once you declare a certain situation as “out of ordinary, an experiment or as a role-playing” as opposite to the “real, serious me” you are more likely to take chances and try new ways. If you want to stimulate your creativity you could start with small “experiments” like changing “your side of the bed”, taking another route to work, changing your clothing style just for one evening and observe the others around you, the way they perceive you and also what you feel. In fact, this might not only improve your creativity but also exercise your courage in facing new situations. If you create your own “summer experiment” or organize your first “solution party”, let me know. I’d love to hear about you new experiences. You can always contact me at: istanbulbusinessworkshops@gmail. com. I wish you lots of new ideas and success during this great summer!

The Pleasant Path to Nirvana By Talya Arditi Say goodbye to pain and suffering, and hello to tranquility and inner peace. These are the goals of yoga and meditation. With yoga holidays, you can embark on a spiritual journey to this desired state of being while relaxing on a beach, sipping a frozen cocktail, and enjoying your choice of summer reads. But if your personal idea of nirvana is not calmness and joy but looking slim and fit, Bodrum also offers a variety of destinations where you can detox, be pampered, lose weight, and learn the rules for leading a healthy lifestyle.

of the individual, and involve a special diet of just shakes and a mix of herbs, cleansing of the colon, yoga, meditation, therapeutic massages (Balinese, Thai, Aromatherapy, or Chi Nei Tsang), and skincare (through hamam, steam bath, and sauna). Yuhay explains that ridding your body of toxins with the special nutritional programs also releases built-up negative energies and emotional toxins. Thus, the daily yoga classes (hatha yoga and pranayama or breathing exercises) help you reach an emotional balance. The Life Co’s mission with the detox programs is to offer preventive therapies that allow the body to reach its optimum vitality. But weight-loss programs with a detox twist are also on offer, such as the “Green Salad Detox” program or the 14-day individually tailored weight-loss program. If you want it all and you have the time, you can choose the 21-day “Life Change” program, which is made of three different 7-day programs. The Life Co complex is designed with the holiday-maker in mind, offering plenty of options for relaxation and activities in and around the complex. During your stay, you can jump on the trampoline, read topical books from the library, swim in the pool, watch films, walk or hike in the nearby hills, or go to the nearby beach. When you leave this “refuge”, you will have learned healthier habits that you can apply to your daily life and rid yourself of physical and emotional blocks. If you want your life energy to flow freely again, detox your body, mind, and soul at The Life Co. For more information, visit www. thelifeco.com.
The Life Co is a detox, well-being, and healthy lifestyle center that offers a new way of life for those looking for a more energetic, healthier, and slimmer self. The detox program is primarily designed for those looking for emotional, physical, and mental purification, although weight loss is a side effect of the program. The Life Co’s program coordinator Mirey Yuhay is a living testament to what The Life Co offers, emanating a calm and peaceful energy as I talk to her. She explains the purpose of detoxing with a great metaphor: just like you need to take your car in for maintenance every once in a while to make sure it works properly, you need to do the same for your body by detoxing. Featuring a pool, lots of green areas, a white-dominated indoor area with minimal décor, and simply designed rooms, The Life Co complex offers an alternative holiday destination for those looking to renew themselves physically and spiritually. The detox programs at The Life Co range in length, depending on the needs

The Importance of Courage in Primary Education The Oxford English dictionary defines courage as “the ability to face danger or difficulty or pain even when you are afraid” and I am certain that all across the world, there are oodles of children that would say they need to do this regularly at school.
A
lthough it seems like a minor little element of school life, I have long been quite stumped when working with students on computers. When faced with making decisions or trying to use new icons and buttons, many students freeze completely, really rather terrified of simply trying out clicks that may or may not help them achieve their aims. From the perspective of someone who has learned computers primarily through experimentation and exploration, this attitude was completely bewildering. It wasn’t until considering a topic for this article that it hit me, that really, what hampered the students with computers was fear and hence, the importance of fostering courage in primary education. Speaking about the need for courage in primary education to a colleague, she felt quite strongly that courage was only something needed to face physical danger. As a primary teacher, I immediately felt an emotional pull toward disagreeing with her. Throughout the years, I have seen many of my students while maybe not terrified, rather scared of school work.

The Oxford English dictionary defines courage as “the ability to face danger or difficulty or pain even when you are afraid” and I am certain that all across the world, there are oodles of children that would say they need to do this regularly at school. It would seem to me that while our students may not be in fear of physical danger, lurking somewhere in some subject is the fear of academic difficulty. As well, in many students, there lies a fear of disappointing, upsetting, or even angering teachers, and of course fear of negative reactions from their peers. In other words, every day, it seems students need well stocked reserves of academic courage and social courage. Academic courage is an essential part of learning. From the beginning of pre-school, we try to encourage students to take risks however, somewhere along the way, the notion of expectations tangles with students’ confidence. Sadly, they often become aware that there might just be “one right answer” and there might just be “one right way of doing it” (like when working with computer programs in ICT lessons). And, as true as it might be that at times it might just
JUNE | JULY | AUGUST 2012
mums ‘n kids be the “one”, the expectation of a black or white result can be forbidding. In the face of academic fear, students must use academic courage to take risks, use their prior knowledge and understanding to take chances, and most importantly, they need courage to face trying despite the fact that they may just be wrong. Social fears also play a large role in a student’s need for courage. How many students do not “have a go” simply because they are afraid of letting their teacher know they do not know the answer? How many students do not “have a go” because they are afraid of disappointing or upsetting their teacher with the incorrect response? Will they be shouted at? Given extra work? Will their teacher think they are stupid? Will that question roaming around their mind be considered off topic or inappropriate by their teacher? Adding to the social fears that can arise from student teacher dynamics, is the social fear stemming from the peer responses to their efforts. Will the student beside them roll his eyes? Will the student across the room tell someone later how they didn’t know the answer that was just “so easy”? If they don’t get the right answers, will their peers groan when they are assigned to group work with them? Trying to list all the different ways students can be confronted with social and academic fears is hopeless. First of all, when you start to try to make a list, it seems endless. Secondly, you have to take into account the personality and experiences of each student in order to even begin to compile an extensive list. However, the recognition of courage at school is not dependent on quantifying or qualifying every fear our students face, rather, it is necessary in order to help provide learning environments which encourage courageous learning events to occur and courageous attitudes to flourish. Inevitably, this leads to the big question – how can we do this? First and foremost, I believe we need to create learning environments where the students feel it is about them. This means that teacher expectations are not the primary driving factors of lessons; instead, lessons and topics are shared as co-exploratory. Students and teachers together, come up with hypotheses, take guesses, and look for answers. The best part about this method is that the students themselves decide when there is one right answer or a proper way to do something. By empowering them with this decision, they begin to feel ownership of answers and methods. Instead of creating a learning environment which exposes students to academic fear factors, this pedagogy provides students with a learning community focused on fostering academic courage.
reshape their concept of expert to include kids their age. The inclusion of peer experts allows students to see the achievable nature of their tasks, lessons, and subjects. As well, by taking a stewardship role in the learning environment, it allows these peer-experts to feel responsibility toward helping others thereby removing the peer related causes of social fear. Overall, I really am quite amazed at the need for courage in primary schools. I am amazed at the level of courage the students need to call up every day in order to raise their hands. I am amazed at the level of courage required for students to share a question. I am amazed at the courage needed to work with their teachers and peers and finally, I am amazed that this is the first time I have recognised the actions of my students as courageous. Most certainly though my role as a teacher has been remarkably changed by the recognition of my students’ courageous deeds.
Cara Frigeri, Year 6 Teacher, The British International School, Istanbul
Secondly and of almost equal importance, I think it is high time we provide learning environments where the students can be the experts. The social fears stemming from our teacher response are predicated on the notion that we have the knowledge. Although it’s often quite hard for teachers to admit they don’t know the answer, I believe this is an essential part of the learning process that needs to be shared with our students. After all, aren’t we trying to teach them how to learn as well as core knowledge? If we don’t model this process and scaffold our students through this process, can we really expect them to go it alone? Social fears stemming from peer reactions are based on the fear that they don’t have the answers but their peers expect them too. Here too, letting the students be the answer providers is essential. Hearing and seeing their peers’ reasoning and methods often opens up new views that our adult minds have missed. As well, quite often having a peer share or lead steps helps the students

S
ummer has arrived and the end of the school term is looming. Many parents have no doubt spent the past few months researching and planning the annual family holiday. But how much thought have you given to maintaining your child’s academic skills over the school holidays? Summer “brain drain” is the widely recognised loss of academic knowledge and skill sets, which occurs to every child during long periods away from the classroom. It truly is a case of “use it or lose it!”. According to specialists maths calculation skills show the greatest decline but reading, spelling and grammar abilities are also prone to deteriorate particularly for children studying in a second language. Did you know that teachers regularly lose the first few weeks of each new school term re-teaching forgotten core subject information?!

Assisting your child therefore to practice and thereby maintain (or even enhance) his or her educational skills over the next couple of months is important for continued learning and development. The Summer holidays are an ideal time for parents to assist and encourage their children to practice skills they have learned over the past school year in everyday situations. When properly mentored in relaxed surroundings over long sunny days (hopefully!) children can thrive while learning unconsciously. The Tirtil Kids team has therefore compiled the following suggestion list to help your child learn in unique, fun and often inexpensive ways:-

comprehending the world we live in. So whether you child is interested in astronomy, botany, geology or even entomology (that’s the study of insects – yikes!) they are bound to find something to fascinate them. Science nurtures curiosity and enhances kids powers of observation, asking how things happen and learning how to find the answers. These are all positive educational skills to develop in children. Opportunities abound to explore science in the home, garden or local park. Home lab tests will give you and your kids the opportunity to invent, create and discover how things work using household products. Older children may enjoy kits that de-mystify robot construction, fiber optics or the workings of the human brain. Whether you take your junior Einstein on a bug hunt in the garden, learn about bubbles and condensation in the bathroom or discover chemical reactions in the kitchen you’re bound to have an adventure! LITTLE TREE HUGGERS Living in a large metropolis can make it challenging for families to enjoy green open spaces. But the Summer months allow more scope for experiencing nature whether by the sea, in the mountains or the countryside. A family walk along a nature trail or beach combing can provide a great platform for flora and fauna discoveries. After all the best way to build respect for nature is to encounter and observe it. It is difficult to pollute and harm what we understand and have formed a relationship with. Further by educating children to reduce, reuse and recycle we will prepare them to be environmentally conscious adults. Books are also an important medium for children to learn about nature and the ecosystem. They help to give youngsters an awareness of the natural world and an understanding of how we are interconnected with everything around us. COOKING UP A STORM Honing skills through cooking projects can prove effective. Young chefs are introduced to the concepts of weighing, measuring and calculating while simultaneously practicing reading (you knew those cook books would come in handy!) and following instructions. Such projects are also great for enhancing youngsters concentration levels. Kids can take pride in their culinary creation and if you encourage them to tidy up as they go along then mum won’t be left with a kitchen disaster zone! SCIENCE ALL AROUND There is sometimes a misconception that science is boring and for geeks. Nothing could be further from the truth! Science is about

SUMMER SKILL SHARPNERS Summer skill sharpener titles are a valuable resource for a child’s success and are generally designed to review the school year just completed. Practice in major subject areas will assist your child to make a successful transition from one grade to the next. These work books ensure competent students consolidate their knowledge while helping those with a weaker understanding to practice and grow in confidence allowing them to return for the new term prepared and confident. So when planning your youngster’s holiday entertainment it is recommended that you include an hour or so each day of activities that encourage learning in a stimulating way. Publishers are conscious to present skill sharpener titles in an engaging way in order not to “turn off”
39
mums ‘n kids that’s “just right” helps kids have fun reading and encourages learning. Once directed to the correct shelf let your child take responsibility for selecting the book. This will ensure he / she picks something that interests them and will make it more likely they will read the title from cover to cover. Finally parents please do set a good example and let your kids see you reading regularly. Hopefully these ideas will halt “brain drain” and give children (and parents!) many hours of productive entertainment all Summer long! NOTE: The Tirtil Kids specialized, multilanguage bookshop stocks a wide range of books, flash and activity cards and educational games covering the above subjects for children of all ages and reading grades. Our experienced staff will be pleased to advise parents on book titles and other products to meet their child’s specific needs. For those who are unable to visit our shop in Istinye Park we offer an on-line purchasing facility via our website www.tirtilkids.com. is also graded according to difficultly so you can allocate roles (if required) according to reading ability.

PREPARING FOR KINDERGARTEN If your toddler is scheduled to start kindergarten in the Autumn why not spend some time familiarising them with the equipment that is essential in every pre-school – pencils, crayons, scissors and glue. Brightly coloured and animated workbooks facilitate parents teaching the motor skills and problem solving abilities that a child needs to successfully take their first educational steps. Children will learn how to hold and control scissors, fold paper, trace as well as stick and paste. These activities can fill many contented hours while you bond with your child and together complete some wonderful art and craft projects!
NUMBER GAMES Summer may be here but kids can still learn while having fun! The good news is that cognitive skills can be integrated into games. One of the most effective and enjoyable ways to give young students brains a healthy work out and keep maths skills sharp is by playing board games like Monopoly that require computation. Many children simply “switch-off” if they find learning tables and formulae tedious and boring to master. Games though put children in the right frame of mind for learning and often negate the need for parents to apply pressure to study. Kids also tend to learn more effectively when information is presented through active learning experiences.
Nick Cullen Co-owner of Tirtil Kids
PLAY TIME Reader theatre script titles are great fun for younger children and enable them to hone their reading and role-play skills. Performing will also boost their confidence. Select a well-known story to ensure that participating youngsters are familiar with characters they will play. Invite some of your child’s friends over and each can read a character part. Some of these series come with masks to encourage the kids to dress up and “get into” the role. Certain publishers colour code the character lines to facilitate the reader knowing when to speak. Unknown to the kids the character text in each book
READING FOR PLEASURE Research has found that reading for pleasure is the only out-of-school activity linked to higher chances of getting to university and better career prospects. Literacy skills can therefore potentially provide the key to social mobility. So a regular visit to a bookshop or library with your little bookworm can be considered time well spent. When selecting books do seek the advice of the shop assistant or librarian to ensure the book is of a suitable level. Keep in mind that a book that is too hard can be frustrating. A book that’s too easy is boring. But a book
young readers. It is best to introduce skill sharpener activities into the daily schedule as soon as the Summer holiday period begins while kids are still in the habit of learning.

Summer Vacation is just around the corner, what do you have planned? Summer Schools in Istanbul Preparing for the summer means have a plan for when they kids are out of school, or something new and different for you and your little one. If you are staying in Istanbul, your child’s school or kindergarden might be offering a summer program. If not, feel free to check with other area schools to see if they have courses set up for the summer. There is a wide variety of different things for your child to try right here in Istanbul. I have complied a list of some of the places that have summer programs that are appropr ate for foreign or bilingual students. Even if
your child doesn’t speak Turkish, I urge you not to be afraid to put him or her in classes where the primary language is Turkish, because more than likely there are instructors and teachers that speak English and would be more than happy to asist you and your child. Also, putting your child into a Turkish leanrning environment can be a very educational and culturally enriching experience for ex-pat children. I compiled the below list from an extensive Turkish internet site www.cocukvizyon.com. The site has many more places to choose from, but I went through and selected the ones that look as if they would be the most hospitable to IWI
