Board Letter

Suzy Kaluti

* Suzy Kaluti

Dear Ladies, The summer is upon us and the IWI 2011 season is rushing to a close! We are all looking forward to a relaxing break whether it means savoring an emptied out Istanbul, heading off to a beachside retreat or making a visit back to your home country, most of us will be enjoying the long, lazy days of summer. The IWI 2010-11 season has been a busy one starting with our Opening Meeting in September and continuing through to our Spring Charity Ball which recently took place. Between that we had our now famous Christmas Bazaar followed by our holiday lunch at the Pera Palace. Scattered amongst these highlighted events were many wonderful programs organized by a fantastic team who really went out of their way to keep IWI members happy. Our Summer Lunch is the next event on the calendar and we look forward to seeing many of you there on June 7th at Banyan Restaurant in Örtaköy. All the women who have served on the IWI Board this year have done an incredible job and each one of them deserves our thanks! Some will be leaving the team and other, new faces will be joining. While most of our members will be enjoying the long summer break, our Board will continue to be hard at work preparing for the upcoming season beginning with our Opening Meeting which is scheduled for Thursday, September 22nd at the Hilton Hotel in Elmadağ. In addition to the social activities that the IWI works so hard to produce we also like to focus our efforts on charitable endeavors. Our Christmas Bazaar and Spring Ball combine both aspects of this and to be involved in such a fantastic group effort is a sincerely rewarding experience for many of us. Our recent Spring Charity Ball “Une Soirée Parisienne” was a wonderful evening in a truly spectacular setting next to the flowing waters of the Bosphorus in an enchanted forest. Many months of planning went into the event and the ladies who organized our evening all deserve a huge pat on the back. It is wonderful evenings like this, in combination with the wildly popular Christmas Bazaar, that make me proud to have represented such a great group of women this year! As a final note I would like to mention that the IWI Board is always looking for helpers to assist with the planning and carrying out of our many events and activities. I hope you enjoy the summer months ahead and while you do please consider joining us next season and becoming an active member of a great organization! Warm regards, Suzy Kaluti

Massage workshop We were a privileged group of 10 ladies who had the chance to learn some basic and more improved movements in order to enjoy giving and receiving massage. Wonderful atmosphere in Halim's Pilates studio. Katrinka and Halim managed to create the perfect "ambiance" to motivate us all in developing our skills. Thank you to all participants and to our instructors ! Massage Workshop " this was one of the best evaluated programs that few of our members had the opportunity to join and enjoy! We will have to repeat for the next season ." All participants had the change to learn more of what to do on others and them selfs as well , enjoy to give massage and most are willing to go for more lessons!

Turkish Flavours We were a small group of ladies who had the opportunity to join Selin, a Culinary Specialist , for a hands-on Turkish cooking class and learnt how to make dishes such as Sigara Boregi, Artichokes cooked in Olive oil, Split Belly Eggplant, Bulgur pilaf and desserts such as Poached figs and stuffed Apricots! Thank you Selin for opening up your authentic Turkish home and teaching us your wonderful creations!

Our last Movie Club for the year was " Somewhere" starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning. A movie directed by Sofia Coppola, showing the loneliness of a celebrity and the tedious world of Hollywood superficiality. Not her best movie but we all had a good laugh!

Had a lovely night on Saturday.. I just wanted to congragulate you all and say thank you... Well done... – Güldehan

a big THANK YOU and congratulations to the big success of the Spring ball – it was excellent and fun!! I hope IWI made also lots of money for Bomonti! – Cerstin

PARISIENNE Thank you so much for this great event last Saturday – it was perfect – the venue, the tasteful decorations, you even managed to arrange blue sky and heaters. The feedback was great – your biggest fan might have been my husband, who did not expect such a professional event…typical men, they think, we just meet for a coffee and a chat. We really enjoyed ourselves, though we drew all blanks in the lottery. –Marie-Theres

It's On the Meter

The other night at a pub in a tiny little village in central Turkey, I overhear the word “CouchSurfing” among a group of people on the edge of the dance floor. As is my habit whenever I hear folks talking about CS, I go over and introduce myself. I am quickly acquainted with some of the most fun-loving, inspiring chaps I have had the pleasure of meeting in my travels. Paul Archer, Leigh Purnell, and Johno Ellison: three British lads on a mission to raise £20,000 for the Red Cross while breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest taxi journey in history. Over several of the following 12 hours, my friend and fellow couchsurfer, Peggy Fok, and I got the low-down on this amazing project It’s on the Meter, along with some great video of the cab in action!

CS: How did you come up with the idea? What was your inspiration?

CS: Are there rules you have to follow while attempting to break the current record?

IOTM (Paul): One particularly expensive taxi cab ride in England got me wondering about the highest cab fare ever recorded, so I looked it up on the internet. I saw the world record for the longest cab ride (33,000km), and thought it might be fun to try and break it. I recruited Leigh and Johno, and we set about planning the trip. We bought and fixed up a 1992 London Black Cab, planned a 50,000km route to Australia, and got some sponsors to help us finance the trip.

IOTM: There are a bunch of things we have to do to. A few key criteria are: 1. Keep the meter running. 2. Check in with a city official, a city employee (such as a police officer or a teacher), or anyone who has city-issued credentials. 3.Take photos in each location with a recognizable landmark or sign. 4. Give rides to people. We also have a GPS tracker that keeps our locations recorded.

CS: Where are you now on your route? IOTM: We’re now about three months into an eight-month journey covering Europe, Russia, the Middle East, India, China, and South East Asia, ending up in Sydney, Australia. We had to change our route a bit as the tensions in Northern Africa became more serious, which was really disappointing because we wanted to experience that part of the world.

12

CS: How is CouchSurfing involved? IOTM (Paul): Johno was an active CSer before this trip and early on suggested that using the site would help us save money while we traveled, and create more opportunities to connect with locals as well. Johno: Paul and Leigh were skeptical, but willing to try it. Our first surfing experience won them over.

June - July - August 2011

CHARITY CS: That was the story you were telling us about, your hosts in Finland? IOTM (Paul): Yes, one of our favorite stories so far. Johno had surfed with a family there a few years back and they hosted the three of us right at the start of the trip. They live about 40 kilometers away from the nearest city, basically in the middle of nowhere. There was snow on the ground, so they let us use their snowmobiles to go adventuring around the area (leading to a mishap or two), took us sledding with their husky dogs, and then took us up on their rooftop to watch the Northern Lights. It was incredible! Johno: This being their first couchsurfing experience, Paul and Leigh were surprised by the openness and warmth with which we were received. Paul: Our hosts became like family in just a few days.

CS: And your experiences since then? IOTM: Amazing, weird. We’ve met a lot of great folks through CS on this trip, and given rides to a few of them.

CS: On this journey, you’re raising money for charity, why did you choose the Red Cross? IOTM: We’ve donated to the Red Cross regularly in the past, and thought it would be good to support right now because of the work they do all over the world, particularly in Pakistan. http:// www.bbc.co.uk/news/special_reports/pakistan_floods/ The Red Cross has been helping people there rebuild after the massive flooding in 2010, but there is still so much devastation. We are hoping to stop by and actually see the Red Cross at work there and bring some attention to the continuing challenges they face in that region.

CS: So the donations you’re collecting go solely to the Red Cross? IOTM: Correct. We ask that people donate through the Just Giving link on our website: http://www.itsonthemeter.com/donate.htm There you can also read our latest blog posts, see our tweets, photos, and video of our adventures. We’re also on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/itsonthemeter?sk=wall.

CS: Where are you headed next? IOTM: We’re driving East through Turkey, headed toward Iraq.

*Colleen Sollars is a San Francisco-based couchsurfer, world traveler, and one of the core team of people who run CouchSurfing on a daily basis. When on the road, she writes about the amazing couchsurfers she meets, and shares their stories. During her last trip abroad, she met a group of friends on a record-breaking journey across three continents, raising money for charity. Their project, "It's On the Meter", is one-third of the way into the journey and their fund-raising goal of £20,000.

CouchSurfing is an international non-profit network that connects travelers with locals in over 230 countries and territories around the world. Their vision is a world where everyone can explore and create meaningful connections with the people and places they encounter. Their mission is to create the inspiring experiences that lead to those connections by facilitating hospitality exchange, events, and activities. Visit to Bomonti Fransız Fakirhanesi

Istanbul Toy Museum

The IWI has a long history of supporting the Bomonti Home for the Elderly in Şişli and you are invited to visit this warm and wonderful facility to meet the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Bomonti Fransız Fakirhanesi (as it is known in Turkish) is the receipient of all funds raised this year from our Spring Charity Ball and we will be presenting them with the results during our visit. The Home was established in 1904 and is dedicated to caring for old people from all backgrounds and religions. The nuns and other staff are totally dedicated to their patients and to helping to make them as comfortable as possible in their final days. In addition to meeting the nuns, we will enjoy a glass of tea and snacks and a short tour of the Home will be possible. The sisters at Bomonti would very much appreciate any donations of household or personal hygiene product such as hand soap, shampoo, toilet paper, cleaning supplies etc.

Probably one of the most interesting museums to be found in Istanbul is the Toy Museum. Toys are not just for children they appeal to all ages - and the museum is visited by people of every generation. The museum was founded by Sunay Akin, a Turkish writer, poet and journalist, and opened on the 23rd of April 2005. Establishing such a museum had long been a dream of Akin. He gathered toys from all over the world for eleven years, and even used his own family’s pavilion as the museum building. Approximately 4,000 pieces from all over the world can be found at the Toy Museum. There are new and old pieces, the oldest being a toy violin made in France in 1817. The toys are classified and displayed according to their origin, country, history or period. There are toys from the times of Sultan Abdülhamit II up to World War II, and from Germany, France, America and Turkey, among others. Each piece transports your imagination to another time, in another place with these little toys.

The book which inspired these remarks was Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada. You’d think, therefore, that we did not enjoy this novel but in fact we gave it a high rating. Perhaps ‘enjoy’ is the wrong word; ‘fascinated’ might better describe the reaction of most of us to this tale of the life of ordinary folk under the Nazi regime in Germany. Originally published in German in1947, this novel is based on a true story of political activism against the Nazis by Elise and Otto Hampel , a working-class couple in Berlin. After Elise’s brother was killed in the war they began an anti-Nazi propaganda campaign, which consisted simply of leaving postcards with messages of civil disobedience in public places all over Berlin. Fallada used this case as the basic framework of his novel about a couple he calls the Quangels, creating a chilling but gripping narrative as the Gestapo gradually homes in on the amateur saboteurs. Our average rating came out as 4*. A WONDERFUL YEAR IS BEHIND US

The Programs Team of 2010 – 2011 season were LILLI, TANJA, MARTINA, STEPHANIE, NALINI and MEHNAZ ! They all did an excellent job organizing a great variety programs and tried to appeal to the different interests of our members… We put our team together just before the 23rd September 2010. At the Opening Meeting in Hilton, we had a big stand with a very striking and well-organized promotion of last year’s programs andan introduction to the future ones. The response we had at the Opening Meeting visitors was huge and we started the 2010 – 2011 season with great enthusiasm. From then until now, the end of the 2011 season, we organized total of 59 programs.

Highlights were:

»» »» »» »» »»

An author’s reading with 60 participants Walking tours, touristic sightseeing and shopping with over 15 participants Pakistani, Lebanese and Turkish cooking classes, also fully booked Make up and Massage courses Workshops

Unfortunately a few programs had to be cancelled due to various reasons: One of them was lack of participation due to late Lale arrivals - It seems not all members are able to use the online reservation system yet. Also the late or lack of response to the reservation confirmation e-mails, made us cancel some programs last minute. We apologize to the ones that were disappointed who had planned in advance.

Following programs are still to take place, but we h ve not determined the dates yet. Please keep an eye on the website: »» »» »» »» »»

Earthquake Seminar First Aid course Olive Oil Seminar, Walking Tour in Sultanahmet Free Sports and Spa Day at a new Sports Complex

Besides these we have already organized 2 author’s readings and2 cooking classes for the next season. We are very proud of "our baby" the Neighbourhood Coffee Morning (NCM.)! Thanks to the efforts of the co-ordinator Nalini, this became one of the most important on-going programs of IWI. This is the most direct way to access to our members in order to provide information, meet the ladies in our neighbourhoods, and support each other. A new regular program is the Movie Club, powerfully coordinated by Stephanie, once a month, with approximately 15 participants. Other on-going programs are the Istanbul@Night which have been organized by by Pervin and Layli once a month in Istanbul’s best locations every month. The Watercolor Workshop supervised by Esbie, already 10 took place times, and the free Coaching Seminar given by Derryn at the office. Thank you all very much for your participation! I want to thank my team for their work, the support and the nice time we spent together brainstorming and organizing interesting programs. Especially Martina for the great and patient work that is still going on, taking reservations and dealing with various members and Tanja for the technical support, uploading programs to the website, and all her good ideas! Also I would like to emphasize on the support and ideas that any team on IWI needs - YOUR ideas and suggestions can make a difference! Do not hesitate and contact the board/team. Thank you very much and all the best of luck for the new Team! Lilli Zachariadou - İcgören

Once again, İKSV is going to present a variety of cultural and artistic events that will fill hot summer days with fresh music. In addition to the Istanbul Music Festival and the subsequent Istanbul Jazz Festival, this August, IKSV will also host an inspiring ensemble: Led by world-famous conductor Gustavo Dudamel, Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela will be in Istanbul for two concerts. Celebrating its 39th anniversary, the Istanbul Music Festival will be held between June 4 and 29. The festival will take festival goers on a musical journey by hosting major stars from around the world such as Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Patricia Petibon, Hilary Hahn, Renée Fleming, Christoph Eschenbach and prominent classic music ensembles such as the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra. Welcoming more than 500 artists, the Istanbul Music Festival presents 24 concerts which will be held in classic festival venues, as well as in new festival venues like Galata Mevlevihanesi, Istanbul University Rectorate Building, Istanbul Modern and santralistanbul-Energy Museum. The full program can be found at http://muzik.iksv.org. Starting from where the Music Festival will leave off, the 18th Istanbul Jazz Festival will take place between July 1 and 18. Stone. In the world premiere of the “Tribute to Miles” concert, legendary jazz musicians Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter will share the same stage. The night of female vocalists, “Sing the Truth” will continue the tradition of African American female singers. Another highlight is the modern flamenco night “Mujeres De Agua,” bringing together names such as Buika and Aynur who will perform songs written by the famous composer and guitarist Javier Lemon. Malinese duo Amadou & Mariam and jazz pop star Jamie Cullum will leave their mark on Istanbul with their performances full of colour and energy. The full programme can be found at http://caz.iksv. org. The month of August will witness a very special meeting: Founder of the inspirational “El Sistema”, José Antonio Abreu, and Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela under the baton of world-renowned Gustavo Duadamel will be in Istanbul on the 8th and 9th of August for two concerts. The amazingly gifted Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel is entirely educated in El Sistema, a publicly financed music education system in Venezuela, watching over youth orchestras and the instrumental training programmes. In addition to the concerts, the events will also include debates on how to launch a similar system in Turkey, with the participation of José Antonio Abreu.

Make an Eco-Statement As the only female vendor in Arasta Bazaar, Canadian Jennifer Gaudet does more than sell certifiedorganic towels. At her shop, Jennifer’s Hamam, she is also trying to bring back the art of Turkish weaving, which is facing extinction. Gizem Ünsalan What brought you to Turkey? It was a holiday and someone had recommended Turkey, but it wasn’t on my list of things I was thinking about. After 7 years of teaching English in Thailand, I wanted to do business there. But I was held back because of the laws, and when I came here on vacation, I discovered—not because I was researching, but just by accident—that the laws are much more open to foreigners doing business [in Turkey].Plus, a foreigner can buy a car, own land… Those things aren’t possible in Thailand, so that made [Turkey] much more appealing. And I felt that Sultanahmet was lacking in many areas. So, I went home, finished my contract and moved here with the intention of opening a business; at that time, my budget fit the idea of a café and art gallery. That was in April 2006. By April 2007 and after 3 months of renovations; without knowing the language at all, I opened Java Studio. We were very successful; we were in all the travel books. This idea was percolating in the back of my brain for a long time. I knew that Turkish towels were famous, and I knew that they were woven when they were famous; it’s sort of become notso-famous after all the factories. At first, I didn’t have the means to set this up, but selling the café allowed me to do that. And I sold my place in June 2009 and opened [Jennifer’s Hamam] on August 1, 2009. Lots of exciting things have happened in the past two years— last week we just opened our second location in Arasta Bazaar. You’re also the only female running shops in Arasta Bazaar. There was Linda Caldwell in the Grand Bazaar; she was the only other foreigner and woman who owned a shop. There are several foreign women who either own or have leases on hotels in the area, but now I’m the last woman to have a shop. Why weaving? It was particularly because the towels that Turkey used to make - I knew - were famous. [There was] a very good reputation for Turkish towels; it still carries on now. Up to 20 years ago, [Turkey] still had workshops here in the Old City Walls that were making these towels, but it’s all but disappeared; it’s almost extinct. And [the] weaving is also dying, even flat weaving… You know that style of weaving with all the loops? There are only 3 families of weavers left [who are doing this]. There’s mine;

22

there’s a family that works mostly in white and ecru, and there’s a man that works predominantly in linen. Now what’s the big deal? The big deal is how much longer it lasts. Because with a woven towel, the integrity of it is much stronger. So, towels like this, even with our modern day dryers, will last 20 years; without the dryer, it’ll last 30 plus years. Most of the market has been lost to factories; of course, the price is better, but people don’t understand the quality they’ve lost. The other thing is, because we’re buying organic threads, the natural properties of the cotton are still intact. Factories actually use chemicals on our cotton to teach it how to be absorbent; cotton from the plant is not absorbent. So, in our hurried lifestyle that keeps on getting faster, they thought, ‘Oh, well, what a great idea! Instead of making people go home and soak their towels— cause that’s what you used to have to do to make cotton absorbent; our grandmothers knew that— why don’t we use chemicals and get the towel all ready for them?’ And, of course, chemicals are very quick, but you kill the natural properties of the cotton. Which means that when you hang to dry, they’re all stiff. I have a very tiny bathroom with no fans and no windows; I take a shower every morning and night, and even in humid Istanbul, my towels never smell musty. Cotton doesn’t sit out on the bush and smell musty. Is it difficult to find the looms used to weave these towels? In the past year, I was able to find enough looms [devices used to weave cloth]. [It’s difficult] because you can’t go somewhere and buy them; they’re not making them anymore. And a lot of them end up as scrap. We now have enough looms for my own production that anything being produced this year in medium size or our big size will have this lovely salvaged edge. And that may not seem like a big deal, but it’s a really big deal. Because this is the only way the customer knows for sure that it was a woven towel. Where in Turkey do you get your cotton? The cotton is grown in Gaziantep, [in Southeast] Turkey. [Pulls her certificate out]. It’s certified-organic agriculture through the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). And then I buy threads in Denizli because that’s where the spinners are. There are actually lots and lots of big factories making towels there, as well. [She shows us another certificate]. This is for the fabric dyeing and finishing, also through GOTS. It’s great that you have the official certificates right here. Are you kidding? There are some shops that say “Organic” right in their signs, and they don’t have any [certificates]. I tell people; they always say, “Oh, I believe you.” [And I tell them,] “You shouldn’t.” You should be asking people if they have their certificates or not; because they’re not easy to get. Aside from the quality, why do you think that “organic” is important in terms of the environment? You know, we’re kind of dumb as humans. By default, we’ve been doing everything organically for a very long time. And nature puts everything together just fine. But when we get our June - July - August 2011

IPWIN

*Marie Theres Raberger

Let’s Celebrate IPWIN Season 2010/2011 Well, summer has finally arrived and many of us will head off to enjoy summer (our) holidays outside Istanbul. For Marie Theres and Cerstin, your IPWIN coordinators, the 2010/11 IPWIN year has been an exciting one to look back on. We joined IPWIN as coordinators last September and found ourselves amongst adynamic and especially active group of ladies. Our initial idea was to offer you a variety of interesting topics but before we could do this it was essential for us to find out more about your fields of interests. We did this by conducting member surveys, the first of which took place at the IWI Opening and involved direct, informal chats as well as the distribution of a member questionnaire.

IPWIN member survey

Firstly, thanks to all those who completed the questionnaires. It helped us to find out, what our members were interested in and therefore what we could offer you during the last IPWIN season of 2010/11.We received around 60 complete questionnaires and were surprised to learn that 50% of our members live in Turkey permanently or, at least on a long term basis, 38 % of you will stay for up to 3 years. The majority at 42 % is are actually working and we were surprised that nearly 30% of these women have their own businesses. Interestingly, we discovered that about 25 % of you have a professional background in Marketing/Sales or Business Administration and “Healthcare” and “Teaching” were both mentioned by 15% of the women. So, as you can see we are quite a diverse group and, of course this is hugely beneficial for us in terms of networking you to network, but something of a challenge for us to cover all these areas! I think a chart/graph would illustrate this very well.

27th of September 2010: IPWIN Opening At The German Consulate

This year the meeting was hosted by the German Consulate which gave us the opportunity to enjoy the splendid surroundings of the German Consulate in Taksim. This gave us the chance to introduce ourselves as the new IPWIN team and meet both new and old members with around 70 participants.

09th of November 2011 Turkish Jobmarket, Murat Yeşildere of Egon Zehnder International

Murat Bey provided us with interesting insights about into the Turkish Job Market. Though we learnt that Turkish companies still prefer to recruit Turkish nationals, he could offer very constructive suggestions on how to work around this issue and make advantage of being able to offering cultural diversity and international knowledge to Turkish employers: He suggested that we forget the “fantasy of a traditional job assignment” and that instead we should think “out of the box”: targeting possible companies through personal contacts and their networks, go LinkedIn and consider working in atypical assignments such as; projects, external advisers or even as entrepreneurs.

07th of December 2010 Work in Turkey/Turkish labour law, Karen Akinci of Akinci Law Office

newly renovated office in Bebek. As well as being able to enjoy the splendid view from their meeting room they provided us with useful information about the latest developments in Turkish labour law, specifically opportunities for foreigners to work here and how to go about setting up a business.

22nd of January 2011 Social Media Workshop, Anastasia Ahsman, Tara Agacayak

Using the principles from their “Mastermind Program for Creative Entrepreneurs”, Tara Agacayak of Turquoise Poppy and Anastasia Ashman of expat+HAREM demonstrated how social media, web technology, and a community of globally-diverse creative professionals could help to design a location-independent career. We had a thrilling discussion about the importance of social media in our (professional) lives, how to find one’s own social media identity and how to deal with personal exposure and benefit from a social web both personally and work-wise.

22nd of February 2011 Excellence in the Turkish Health Sector, Melis Zorluoğlu at Acibadem Fulya Hastanesi

We were invited by the Acıbadem Healthcare Group to learn more about the healthcare business in Turkey, which is Turkey’s leading healthcare institution and has provided extensive healthcare services with state-of-the-art medical technology since 1991. We were able to discuss the challenges of a modern healthcare business in Turkey in areas such as quality management (services, personnel) or and marketing, following the presentation we were given the unique opportunity of a guided tour “behind the scenes”!

11th of April 2011, Informal Chat with Brita Wagener, German Consul General

Meeting with Brita Wagener was a very interesting opportunity to obtain a detailed vision of her career in the German diplomatic staff, being female in the diplomatic circle and her life as a mother of three. She told us about the challenges she encountered during her assignments in Cairo, Tel Aviv or and New Delhi. As always, we were able to discuss current issues, especially how she manages being a female in a world of predominantly men and how she cope with living abroad and balancing a career with family life.

Karen Akıncı and her team of law experts welcomed us at their

Marie Theres Raberger & Cerstin Dewald

Ladurée Ladurée is a phenomenon, the well-known French tea-room, the creator of “macaron”, one of the most exquisite delicacies in the world…

T

he all legend began in 1862, when Louis Ernest Ladurée, a French miller, created a bakery at 16 rue Royale in Paris. In 1871, under the reign of Napoleon the 3rd, the Baron Haussmann gave to Paris a ‘‘new face’’ : the Opera, the boulevards, etc… Subsequently to a fire in their bakery, Louis-Ernest Ladurée and his wife transformed their bakery into a pastry shop. Under the Second Empire, Paris underwent radical changes. Cafes and restaurants developed and became more and more luxurious. Paris became one of the most important cities in Europe with its distinguished entertainment centers. At that time, Parisian women started to be liberated. Ernest Ladurée’s wife, Jeanne Souchard was inspired by this social transformation to implement a novel idea: a tea room for ladies. At that time, it was not proper for Parisian women to go to cafes, she created Europe’s first “tea salon” concept. Ladurée became the first meeting venue where women could come freely and unaccompanied. In the 148 years since then, Ladurée has remained a well sought meeting point not only for ladies, but also for all elegant Parisians while at the same time becoming renowned all over the world…

The story of Ladurée Macarons, a small, round cake, crisp on the outside, smooth and soft in the middle, begins with Pierre Desfontaines, second cousin of Louis Ernest Ladurée. He first thought of joining two macaroon shells and placing in between the two shells, a delicious ganache filling (a sort of jam) at the beginning of the 20th century. The recipe of Ladurée Macarons, which are baked only in France, consists of almonds, eggs, sugar, and a pinch of Ladurée’s unique “know-how”, essential to the making of such a delicacy. In Ladurée, you have so many reasons to be tempted. . Ladurée’s chocolate, vanilla, coffee, raspberry, pistachio, lemon, red fruits, orange blossom, and caramel flavors are permanently available. Added to these are seasonal flavors prepared which will surprise you. You always want to try the new ones, and also enjoy the “old ones”, and this one, and that one, with no end… For Ladurée, appetite is not a sin, but a philosophy… A nice way of seizing the moment gracefully… When you go through the doors of the Ladurée boutique, it is as if you were going through a time tunnel and find yourself in the distinguished and tasteful atmosphere of the 19th century. With colorful Macarons displayed in their elegant boxes, various chocolate collections, candies, teas, ice creams, sorbets, home fragrances and perfumed candles, you are welcomed into a land of fairy tales. In brief, it is not possible to pass by a Ladurée boutique without entering… The window displays attract and enchant one with seductive colors and sights…. Not entering might be one of the greatest mistakes possible… After more than a century of existence in Paris, Ladurée has started to open abroad. Initially in London (a magnificent store in Harrod’s), Switzerland and Japan, and then in the Middle East (Dubaï), and Turkey . Now Ladurée has two boutiques in Bebek and İstinye Park in İstanbul. As in all the boutiques all over the world, the Macarons will come from France.

Legendary Tastes of Ladurée Ladurée is the creator of macarons, that is why the most known product of Ladurée is macarons. You can find 10-15 kind of macarons everytime in Ladurée İstanbul. Ladurée have plenty of macaron flavours into two categories. One is the “permanent macarons” which are always available in Ladurée bouqitues like chocolate, caramel, vanilla, pistachio. The other is “seasonal macarons” and cannot found every seasons because Ladurée macarons are made with fresh fruits. For this season you can find brand new framboise, violet-plum and rose-ginger macarons in Bebek and İstinye Park boutique.

You can choose different taste for only one macaroon pyramid, so you can bring tastes for everyone together. Also service of macaroon pyramids are so easy. Turkish Laws 101

Karen Akıncı, LLB, Akıncı Law Office info@akinci.av.tr

Turkish Labour Law

I

signed a three year contract with my company but the management changed and they want to put a local person in my place. My contract has one year left to run but they say I have to leave Turkey within a month and they will not pay my rent after that time. What rights do I have?

In this case you have a fixed term employment contract which is about to be terminated by the employer. Unfair dismissal has different consequences for fixed term contracts because termination of the fixed term contracts without just cause is not regulated in the Turkish Labour laws. For a fixed term contract’s termination the courts need to look to the Code of Obligations for guidance. Different opinions and applications have been seen in the courts. For several years the Turkish Supreme Court held that dismissal before the end of the contract was a “default” by the employer and the employee was granted the rest of his wages. In such cases employees do not have the right to claim severance. Recently the Turkish Supreme Court has changed its approach and now holds that dismissal before the contract ends is “termination without just cause” and the employee was awarded the remainder of his wages together with severance compensation in accordance with Article 325 of the Turkish Code of Obligations. My employer has not paid my wage for two months and he often pays late. It is starting to get very difficult to manage my finances because my landlord makes me pay extra if I'm late paying the rent. What can I do? If the employer fails to pay the wages or to pay in conformity with the Turkish Labour Code and the terms of the contract, you can claim your wage plus interest before the courts within 5 years and you can break the contract according to Article 24/II-e of the Code. The highest interest rate charged to bank deposits shall be levied on wage debts not paid on the day they were due.

30

June - July - August 2011

Turkish Laws 101 You can also refrain from working if your wage has not been paid within 20 days of the day it was due, except for unforeseen circumstances affecting the employer’s natural ability to pay according to Article 34 of the Code. Employment contracts cannot be terminated solely because the employee has refrained from working for this reason; no replacements can be hired, and the work cannot be performed by others.

Bulletin

My wife and I relocated to Turkey six months ago on a three year contract, the children settled into school here very well. The management now say they made a mistake and though they are happy to keep me on they will not keep paying the children's school fees here. Our children are too young to send back to the UK to boarding school and I cannot afford their fees. Can the company do this? They originally agreed to pay the fees.

We wanted to bring to your attention some changes have been made to the Regulation for Implementation of the Law on Work Permits of Foreigners. According to these changes, new applications to the Ministry are to be made electronically and then signed on paper and sent to the Ministry with the application form given in the attachment to the Regulation. For work permit applications filed from abroad, the transactions are conducted electronically by the Representative of the Republic of Turkey as well as the Ministry. The documents requested during the application process will be submitted to the Ministry and an electronic application will be made by the employer of the foreigner within ten working days of the date of the foreigner’s application to the Representative.

If the employer agreed to pay the school fees in a written contract or has been paying these fees for at least 6 months, they cannot now stop paying the fees. You have right to claim the fees as they are agreed at least until the end of your contract.

For work permit applications filed domestically, the documents requested during the application will be submitted to the Ministry within six working days of the date of the foreigner’s electronic application.

I still have one and a half years to run on my contract with a Turkish company but I have decided to go back to Belgium as my father has become very ill and he has no other children to make sure he is well cared for. What are my rights concerning my contract?

Foreigners can apply for extension of their work permit (with at least 45 day to run on their current permit) on the condition that the nature of his work has not changed; the foreigner would work in the same workplace and same profession. For work permit application is for a foreigner married to a Turkish citizen and living in Turkey with their spouse in the marital union, there is no condition on the time of residence.

For a fixed duration of contract there is no concept of ‘working ones notice’. To end your contract early; either you can leave immediately in which case you will have to pay compensation to your employer; or if your reason for leaving comes within one of the special cases below you would be excused from your contract. According to the Turkish Labour Code, an employee is entitled to break the contract, whether for a definite or an indefinite period, before its expiration or without having to observe the specified notice periods, in the following cases: »» »» »»

for reasons of health, for immoral, dishonourable, or malicious conduct or other similar behaviour by the employer, force major.

Most probably your case will not be one of these particular reasons and the employer may demand compensation. The compensation recovers damages that arise from the rest of the contract term. For example, the employer may not be able to find a substitute employee for the remaining period. If your contract had been for an indefinite period, you would have been able to break the contract by serving notice to your employer. The contract would terminate at the end of a period defined in the Law following your resignation letter, unless this period was changed by a clause in your contract. You would then have to work this period of time. The notice period is: »» »» »» »»

two weeks if the employment lasted less than six months; four weeks if the employment lasted for six months or more but for less than one-and-a-half years; six weeks if the employment lasted for one-and-a-half years or more but for less than three years; eight weeks if the employment lasted for more than three years.

Nancy Ozturk & Adrian Streathers

The greatness of an early Turkish entrepreneur, Bernar Nahum has been revealed to the city and its population. A significant and exciting consequence of the quest of New York City to find a new taxi is that Turkey and its automotive industry has been launched into the media spotlight.

I

n 2007, NYC officials convened a group of stakeholders, including representatives of taxi drivers, owners and passengers, to develop a new standard for the next New York City taxi cab, a project they called the “Taxi of Tomorrow.” Acting on the recommendations, in December 2009 the city issued a request for proposals, inviting auto manufacturers and designers to submit their concept designs for a purpose-built vehicle to serve as the only New York City taxicab from 2014 to 2024. The city was seeking designs that would be environmentally conscious and fuel efficient and stated in its official press-release that the “Taxi of Tomorrow” project will better meet the needs of passengers, drivers, owners and the city as a whole. The initial response was enthusiastic and while the officials did not name the number of proposals received they did say that “more than five carmakers have responded with proposals” and that the submissions offered new and exciting technological advancements. In 2010 the city authorities announced the submitted designs had been reduced to three finalists and the news was particularly exciting for Turkey! Two of the finalists are Turkish manufactured designs; the Ford Transit and the Karsan. The third finalist is Nissan of Japan. Of particular interest is the Karsan V1 entry. Not only will it be manufactured in Turkey, the V1 taxi is a completely new concept designed specifically for this competition. By early 2011 the people of New York had spoken: when asked their opinion on the taxi designs of the three finalists in the “Taxi of Tomorrow” competition, 65.5 percent of the respondents expressed a favorable view of the Karsan V1 taxi, compared to just 38 percent for the Ford design and 42.4 percent for the Nissan. While the city will take the survey into consideration, they are not bound to follow the decision. All three manufacturers are anxiously awaiting the city's decision as to which will provide the new taxi design for New York City. Karsan is now promising the city that it will move the V1 taxi manufacturing from Turkey to Brooklyn, thus reinstating an industry that had long since disappeared from New York City.

32

At Citlembik Publishing we are also excited about the outcome. This is because we have grown to love the silent pioneer of Turkey's automotive industry, the late Bernar Nahum, the father of two of Karsan's leading executives and members of the board of directors (Jan and Klod Nahum) and the man who worked behind the scenes with the Koç Corporation to propel Turkey's long and difficult endeavor to partner with American Ford Company, the entrepreneur before he worked for Vehbi Koç who wandered the back roads of Turkey in the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s selling tractors. Bernar Nahum was a determined and the impassioned Turkish citizen and patriot who was the driving force behind the development of not only the Ford and Fiat interests in Turkey, but also of the Turk Traktor Company. This company has been getting considerable mention in the international press as a Turkey-based manufacturer that both manufactures a full range of agricultural machinery and also now exports its products to over 50 countries, where it is a regional leader. Three years ago I was contacted by Adrian Streather, an Australian automotive author living in Switzerland who had just completed a biography of Turkey's Bernar Nahum. He asked if I would be willing to publish his new book. I discussed the project with my daughter and partner Zarife Ozturk and we soon signed the contract. We next recruited our friend Guniz Buyuktur as translator and Rebecca Erol and Tulin Er as editors. As we read the text we came to understand just how great the contributions of Bernar Nahum have been to the Turkish automotive industry. We learned that he was determined to make Turkey a manufacturer of automobiles, not just an assembler or sales point. And even though he ran into wall after wall of problems and disappointment after disappointment, his determination—and might I say stubbornness (?)--carried the day as he surmounted barriers that he encountered both in Turkey and abroad. Turkey owes Bernar Nahum a huge debt of recognition and gratitude. We hope that our book Monsieur Bernar Nahum: The Silent Pioneer of Turkey's Automotive Industry – which should be on the shelves in about a month--will also give our readers the opportunity to meet this fascinating personality, to learn about how Turkey carved out industries from the ashes of Ottoman Empire and to get a glimpse of the relationships that the Turks built with often-reluctant foreign partners, especially the Ford family.

mums ‘n kids

Jasmine Bolton

Farewell IWI Mums n Kids Coordinator Jasmine Bolton is stepping over to Programs Team. Let's give a warm welcome to the new Mus n Kids Team!

I

t’s been a fun year and I would all like you to welcome our new Mums ‘n Kids Team: Gigi Aksu and Karolina Meiscloch as the coordinators. I am not stepping down, but rather, stepping over to the programs team. It was a pleasure meeting all you moms and getting the kids together for special events. It has been lovely seeing how all the children have grown and developed this year! In September we will welcome our new mothers and our exisiting members will move up in our playgroup ranks, and then eventually to school. However, I would like to reinforce the fact that this group is not just for mothers with infants and toddlers, it is also for those who have older children, like mine (5 and 7 years) who would like their children to get involved in a special activity now and again. Mums ‘n Kids is also a group that caters to families

40

that want to meet other international families outside of the school arena. It offers our members the chance to have their children meet and interact with other English-speaking children and participate in some cultural activities that are not usually practiced here in Turkey.

Don’t forget to check your e-letters this summer. Keep supporting the IWI endevors by renewing your membership at the IWI Opening Meeting on September 22nd, at the Hliton. Come to the Mums ‘n Kids booth to renew and meet Gigi and Karolina. The IWI is a great social network to be involved in. I am proud to carry on in Lilli İçgoren’s footsteps and I hope that some of you mothers with new-found freedom can also join some of the just

for ladies programs as well. I think, some women get so caught up in their children, that sometimes they forget to take a little time out for themselves, so make a day to do a playgroup and make a day to do an IWI program on your own. I have found that taking time for myself has helped me to become a better and definetely more well-rested and patient mother. I urge you to do the same. Many thanks for your participation and feedback this year. Hope you have a wonderful summer, and return ready to go for the next season! Best wishes and see you on the otherside! jasmine@iwi-tr.org 0533 717 2889

Early literacy skills Acquiring early literacy skills is a topic that lies very close to my heart. So many children have been wrongly diagnosed as being dyslexic or have unnecessarily struggled to learn to read because this very important process has been neglected. Once again, research conducted in 2008 has proven that six early literacy skills are vital in laying the foundation for acquiring later reading and writing skills. Vocabulary Most children will know at least 3000 words when they start school. To know what things are called is a very important skill for young students to have when they are starting to learn how to read. This means that your child should ideally start to learn to read in the language that is determined as their first language. Some children will have two first languages, in which case I advise that the child starts to learn to read in the mother tongue of the parent who will mostly support the child with reading at home.

Print motivation Children who are interested in books have print motivation. This is the child who brings a book to you to read to them. They also pretend to read books or read books to you by making up a story to go with the pictures. You can encourage print motivation in your child by reading books to them or reading interesting little pieces of news to them from your newspaper. While driving in the car point out the names of stores you know they are interested in or ask them to see how many signs they can read.

Print awareness Teach your child that different languages may use different ways of reading, for example, in Hebrew, we read a book from the back to the front and in Chinese people read from the bottom up, but in English and Turkish, we read from the left to the right and from the top to the bottom. Ask your child to point to words in your newspaper or books you are reading to them that they start to recognize. Don’t put pressure on your child by asking them to read certain words to you. Instead, ask them to read the words to you that they recognize. This way the activity remains relaxed.

Narrative skills You can help your child to strengthen their narrative skills by asking them to tell you what happened at the birthday party they went to or describe a visit to their grandparents. When you read to them, ask them to retell the story to someone else, for example a spouse, sibling or grandparents.

Letter knowledge To me the most important part in the process of learning to read is to teach children that letters have names and sounds. There are great programs that can be used to teach a child the letter sounds

44

and names in a multi-sensory way. Once you think your child knows most of the letter sounds and names you can play some fun games with them by asking them to point out and name letters in books, on labels or other material. Try drawing and painting some letters and matching the shape of the letter to a shape. For example, an A looks like a triangle. In summer, draw some letters in the sand on the beach.

Phonological awareness Once your child knows the letter sounds and names you can start making some rhymes. For example, “the fat cat sat on the mat.” Your child must be able to both hear and create the rhymes. Also play silly word games by making up words and ask your child to tell you which one is not a word, for example, bat, hat, mat, zat, cat. Then give them a chance to make up words for you to point out the one that is not a word. Start reading poems to your child. If reading with your child becomes a struggle and he/she gets nervous, please stop asking your child to read to you, but continue to read to him/her. If you suspect that your child is not remembering the letter sounds and names, please seek professional help. Early intervention is very important. Reading must always remain a fun activity for your child. Lastly, please bear in mind that some people love to read and some don’t. Carol Crous LEARNING SPECIALIST

SUMMER BOREDOM BUSTERS! The Summer holidays are upon us. Yikes! Where did the school year disappear to? Many parents are actively looking for productive ways to entertain their children and fill those long sunny days. The Tirtil Kids team has therefore devised some activity ideas to mitigate the risk that after the initial euphoria of being released from their desks kids will complain that they are bored and have nothing to do…

Skill Sharpeners:

Not surprisingly most kids lose some knowledge and skill sets during long school recesses. Maths calculation skills show the greatest decline but comprehension capability is also likely to deteriorate. Assisting your child to maintain (or even enhance) his or her reading and maths skills over the next couple of months is essential to continued learning and development. Practice in major subject areas will help your child to make a successful transition from one grade to the next. So when planning your youngster’s holiday entertainment it is recommended that you include “into the mix” some daily activities that encourage learning in a fun way (I know – it is not often that the words “learning” and “fun” are used in the same sentence!). This needs to be done subtly so that younger children don’t realise they are studying and tweens and teenagers enjoy and are fulfilled by the exercises. We compare it with hiding the dreaded green vegetables inside the chocolate cake! Publishers are conscious to present skill sharpener titles in a fun and engaging way (so they don’t look like school work books) in order not to “turn off” young readers. It is recommended to introduce skill sharpener activities into the daily schedule as soon as the Summer holiday period begins while kids are still in the habit of learning.

Reading enrichment activities: The objective is to build on topics or themes within a book so as to make for a multi-dimensional experience. Children’s books based on TV shows, films, board and computer games are in abundance but there are a multitude of other inspiring activities to explore. With their busy school and activity schedules children can forget to have adventures or to do slightly wacky things! I have for instance discovered some books recently that provide a year-around “bucket-list” of fun must-do and must-see activities for the younger generation. They

46

open children’s minds to activities that they might not normally think of doing such as making a time capsule, tracing the family tree or developing their own signature food dish. Pastimes such as these can be undertaken independently (depending upon the age of the child) or together with a sibling or a friend. The Summer often gives families the opportunity to spend more quality time together doing things. So why not instil the spirit of adventure into your family and go on a scavenger hunt for cool places and amazing experiences. It is easy to forget sometimes that so many interesting places are within close vicinity of your home. A visit to a working farm can help kids to understand the food chain. A trip to a planetarium or observatory will give children an incite to the stars and galaxy. And a tour of an archaeological site (Istanbul has no shortage of those!) can provide an interesting history lesson. Your family reward will be a collection of incredible experiences and many new discoveries.

Summer reading plan:

One way to help develop a love of books is to let children experience how enjoyable reading can be. So why not assist you’re child to develop a Summer reading plan. Take the time to enquire about his or her current interests (as you know kids interests can change on a whim) and make a list together of the favoured genres and book titles he or she is interested in. It is of course useful to read a varied range of books. However, if your little bookworm is for instance not turned on by novels let him read a favoured hobby or comic book for the time being. The important thing is to get the child reading on a regular basis by tapping into his or her interests. Over time their reading appetites will diversify. It is useful to set a realistic goal for the number of books your child will read during the Summer. It might be prudent to purchase

just a couple of the reading plan titles to start with. Once the initial purchases have been read then acquire some more. This carrot-and-stick approach will incentivise the young reader to complete a book rather than dipping in and out of a larger selection which some youngsters are prone to do. It may also be helpful for youngsters to keep a reading diary to record the latest pages read, an update of the story line and their thoughts on the book so far.

Learn something new:

The Summer can present wonderful learning opportunities for children. Look within your neighbourhood and even your home to discover activities that will introduce your child to fun new hobbies and interesting skill sets. For instance there are a wide range of children’s cookbooks, which introduce young chefs to the concepts of weighing, measuring and general cooking skills. Tips for decorating and wrapping the culinary creations will also come in handy if the youngster hasn’t already eaten them! The arts are enriched with the things youngsters need to succeed. Just as kids need a nutritious daily diet, they will also benefit from a regular serving of arts and crafts. Children derive the greatest benefit and enjoyment when art entails experimentation and imagination. So why not introduce your little Picasso to drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. Whatever the form, art is great fun for all of the family. Origami is a fascinating and creative craft for kids. Children will get a real sense of satisfaction out of making their paper masterpieces. They will also learn how to follow instructions and increase their manual dexterity. If you find boys are less enthusiastic about this art form then a great alternative option would be a book about paper airplane folding.

Planes, trains and automobiles:

The commute to the long awaited holiday destination can sometimes be stressful for parents. Younger children can be fidgety and older siblings get bored particularly in transit. The trick is to pack in your hand luggage a selection of child friendly entertainment kits. Did I hear you say that airlines won’t allow a bag that large on board (grin)?! Never fear. There is a wide range of compact activity cards to meet the needs of all the family. Topics range from princess or dinosaur snap for the little ones, crack the secret codes (which includes semaphore and Morse code as well as Egyptian hieroglyphics) or brain games to baffle and bamboozle young brains. 50 things to do with your baby or toddler on a journey can be a lifesaver. Many of these packs are laminated, wipe clean and a marker pen is included so they can be used again and again. Sudoku puzzles have been hugely popular with adults over recent years and now kids can enjoy this craze also. Sudoku provides an excellent opportunity for kids to develop their logic and maths skills while having fun. Kids crossword puzzles are growing in popularity too. Finally Q&A card sets tap directly into the pleasure youngsters derive from proving what they know and learning what they don’t. Kids can play alone or with friends and their portability and ease of use ensure these packs are the perfect travel companion.

NOTE: The Tirtil Kids specialized, multi-language bookshop stocks a wide range of books and educational products for children of all ages and reading grades. We also work closely with many of the top schools in Istanbul. Our experienced staff will be pleased to advise parents on book titles to meet their child’s specific needs. For those who are unable to visit our shop in Istinye Park we offer an on-line purchasing facility via our website www.tirtilkids.com. Tirtil Kids shop location: Istinye Park, Floor minus 2, Istinye, Istanbul Shop Tel: 0212 345 5370 Nick Cullen Co-owner of Tirtil Kids, the specialized multi-language children’s book shop.

These ideas should keep the kids happy and occupied all Summer long and as a result parents will have a relaxing holiday and maintain their sanity!
