WHY I LOVE KNIGHTSBRIDGE Tucked away in a quiet, green enclave of Knightsbridge, it’s hard to believe that jewellery designer Diane Kordas’ home lies just moments away from the bustle of Brompton Road By Fleur Fruzza / Photographer David Cleveland Seventeen years ago, jewellery designer Diane Kordas arrived in London from New York, got into a black cab, and asked to be dropped off in the centre of everything. The driver dropped Kordas off on Brompton Road, and she has lived there ever since. In those 17 years, Knightsbridge has developed into a cultural melting pot where the very old is juxtaposed with the newest of the new. Inspiring artistic and educational institutions like the Victoria & Albert, Natural History, and Science museums

sit alongside innovative restaurants that offer culinary curios from every continent. Similarly, some of London’s largest, most historic green spaces such as Hyde Park and Green Park co-exist with some of the world’s best and most developed shopping experiences. No surprise then that the area is continually cementing its position as the go-to locale for some of the most lavish residential developments in London. Here, Kordas explains why, since that cab ride 17 years ago, she has never looked back.

We were fortunate to come to Knightsbridge early; it has since exploded with incredible shops and restaurants.

Greece is where we have our other home. We spend a lot of time on the islands there and always have done. I often get inspiration for my jewellery designs from Greek island life.

As well as Mount Street Gardens, Berkeley Square is on our doorstep, and it always gives me a welcome breath of fresh air.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU ABOUT THE AREA?

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU GET TO YOUR STUDIO IN THE MORNING?

I’m mostly inspired on my travels away from work, but I appreciate the British heritage that is instilled in Mayfair, and art institutions like the Royal Academy and the Cork Street galleries.

Every day is different. Once a week I’ll have a conference call with our team in Hong Kong – I love hearing their news, and how the store is doing over there. Production and design meetings

usually take up my mornings. If I’m lucky, I’ll get a breakfast or coffee at Cecconi’s, which is one of my favourite places to eat in Mayfair.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BE INSPIRED? Good music. I’m loving the remastered Beach Boys album The Smile Sessions from 1966-67. Those harmonies!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL THEATRE? The Donmar is my favourite theatre in London. I’ve just become a member,

so I’m looking forward to seeing what 2012 has to offer.

IF YOU COULD LIVE IN ANY BUILDING IN LONDON FOR A DAY, WHICH WOULD IT BE? One of the late Richard Paxton’s houses with retractable roofs and swimming pools in the living room.

The team also commissioned bespoke furniture. “Scale is massively important in a small property,” Cosgrove says. “Although we chose existing pieces to accessorise, we had the sofa, side and coffee tables made from scratch to ensure ITT \PM XZWXWZ\QWV[ _MZM ZQOP\ º ) TIZOM UQZZWZ KTWKS UILM Ja :MÆM` _I[ X]\ JM[QLM \PM JIa _QVLW_# Q\[ XW[Q\QWV _I[ KPW[MV \W ZMÆMK\ LIaTQOP\ QV\W \PM ZWWU The team also placed an extendable dining table beneath the window as a place \W MV\MZ\IQV O]M[\[ <W KZMI\M I [MIUTM[[ NMMT \PZW]OPW]\ \PM ZWWU \PM ÅVQ[P WV the table was matched to the display unit. The next challenge was to transform the second bedroom, belonging to the couple’s 19-year-old daughter, into a fun and livable space. “Their daughter was a fashion student, and she liked colour, so we wanted to add drama to the room,” Cosgrove says. “We created a large, deep-buttoned headboard in rich purple, and placed mirrors on either side to make the room appear bigger. She absolutely loved it.” V

s well as being naturally creative, the skilled troupe of designers at The Studio could cite resourcefulness as one of their key skills. Whether it’s a decorative makeover or a complete overhaul, the team is used to tight budgets, problem solving and speedy turnarounds. “As a designer, you want to do absolutely everything you can to create a space that’s the best it can possibly be,” says Sara Cosgrove, Head of The Studio. “But you always have to be mindful of the clients’ budget and time frame, especially if you’ve been completely entrusted with the project, as we often are.” The team’s latest project was a dated and tired two-bedroom property in Chelsea that was in desperate need of a makeover. The clients, a couple who had recently moved back from Australia, wanted the property to be converted into a light and airy space that was similar to the one they lived in abroad, but with the chic décor of a Manhattan apartment. The team was given just three months to deliver; after the initial consultation, they would have complete KZMI\Q^M NZMMLWU I[ \PM KTQMV\[ _W]TL JM I_Ia <PIVSN]TTa IN\MZ \PMQZ ÅZ[\ meeting and inspection of the property, the team quickly saw what the clients wanted. “They told us what brands they liked – Ralph Lauren, Fendi – but also that they wanted an element of quirkiness,” Cosgrove says. “After we saw the property, we knew exactly what needed to be done, and they were receptive to our team’s ideas.”
