Picasso. Vingt poems de Gongora.

Complete portfolio book, with forty one etchings including aquatints by Picasso, undated and unsigned, from February 1947 to March 1948. Copy 46/235 on Marais paper watermarked Gongora, from a total edition of 275 copies. The book features 20 sonnets by Gongora, previously published in French for an edition of Cahiers d'Art in 1928. Picasso hand copied them in Spanish and decorated the text with remarques. Picasso discovered the fascinating aesthetics of handwriting by working in the same year on Chants de Morts, with poems by Reverdy handwritten by the poet; for this edition he has pursued the same aesthetic line. Each poem is preceded by a full page etching, and for the first sonnet Picasso chose a portrait of the poet after a painting of the young Velazquez, then with 19 etchings depicting heads of women for the remaining sonnets. For the cover, Picasso wrote with brush Gongora's name in imitation of the poet's handwriting, for the watermark he also used the name of the poet but with an arabesque above the initial. Complete, loose as issued, guarded in the original Auvergne paper wrappers, hard cloth chemise and matching slipcase. Ref: Cramer 51 $30,000.00
