Franz Thomassin who writes under the pseudonym Franz Villiers, was the neighbor of Matisse in Vence. The painter realized in late October 1946, three charcoal portraits followed fourteen lithographic variations of the writer face. A French edition was published on Paris by Editions Hemispheres on 1949, after the couple returned to France from the exile in New York because of the Jewish origins of the poet. Elegy of Ihpetonga is dedicated to Picasso and reflect Goll’s experience in New York. A comment preceding the poem explains its title: “Ihpetonga, which signifies high cliff, was the name that the Canarsie Indians gave to that part of Brooklyn which today is known as Columbia Heightsand which dominate the port of New York.
