The portfolio printed in papier a la cuve du Moulin de Richard De Bas, especially watermarked for this edition, is very well preserved in the original pictorial cloth cover. The colophon mistakenly describes the print that accompany the deluxe edition as a lithograph instead of the etching with aquatint that Chagall especially made for this edition (Cramer n. 48) The Etching comes in a separate portfolio in red cloth matching the box where the book is guarded, and is numbered in pencil on the left bottom corner. Condition: The book presents several stains on the paper, as same the etching that is stained but only on the edges. The red box and red portfolio are slightly worn with some scratches and wear. Matisse leads us along the course of the passionate love affair of the nun from Beja, depicting the imaginary portraits of Mariana with delicate and at the same time tormented contours. With an original Lithograph, in frontispiece, signed in pencil by Matisse, printed on China paper. Limited in 40 copies in Velin teinte Malacca paper. Very rare in very good condition. Franz Thomassin who writes under the pseudonym Franz Villiers, was the neighbor of Matisse in Vence. The painter realized in late October 1946, three charcoal portraits followed fourteen lithographic variations of the writer face.
