WHO WE ARE

WE’RE A DOWN TO EARTH, FEET ON THE GROUND, DON’T MIND GETTING OUR HANDS DIRTY SORT OF COMPANY. For more than 20 years we’ve used our drilling and trenching expertise to help build great infrastructure projects that benefit the New Zealand economy.

OVERVIEW

SMALL CHANGES EVENTUALLY ADD UP TO BIG RESULTS.

THEN

NOW

hen we commenced business in W 1995 we were principally a directional drilling company. Back then we were a small team working mainly installing power, comms and gas ducting. Over time open trenching was added to our capability which enabled us to undertake more complex, larger scale projects. Our development has been built on identifying opportunities and introducing new services and technologies. More recently this has included drainage, hydro excavation, traffic management and reinstatement works. J&R CONTRACTING

COMPANY PROFILE

e’re a mid-size company, an W important partner to infrastructure owners in the northern half of the North Island and we regularly work with some of New Zealand’s major contractors. Most of what we do can’t be seen, but what is visible is our strong track record, a reputation for quality and high health and safety standards. We have a strong focus on zero H&S and environmental incidents, developing innovative methodologies and the reinstatement of private and public land at the conclusion of projects.

STORY

FROM THE GROUND UP A lot of things have changed since we started in 1995. We’ve got bigger, increased our services, taken on bigger projects and along the way we’ve developed a great reputation. But some things haven’t changed. We don’t get ahead of ourselves, we’re hard workers, we’re true to our word, we know what we stand for and our work is top quality. Our thinking and behaviour is similar to a big company, but our culture is based on family qualities such as camaraderie, loyalty, support and friendliness. We know that we totally rely on each other to get our individual jobs done, which means we need to get this absolutely right – there’s too much at stake if we don’t. One of the things that makes us different is how easy it is for our clients to do business with us. We don’t stand on ceremony. When things need to be done we just get on with it. Nothing is too much trouble. We’re straight up, flexible when we need to be and we’re about being a partner. We’re incredibly proud of who we are and the work we do. We’re ambitious, we want to grow, raise our profile and build a reputation as the ‘go-to’ guys for our sector. J&R CONTRACTING

CAPABILITY

OUR SERVICES DIRECTIONAL DRILLING

W e cut our teeth on directional drilling and we are now one of New Zealand’s foremost operators in thrusting up to 630mm PE Pipe to tight grades. We have experienced operators that pride themselves on finding and protecting existing underground services, utilising hand digging and hydro excavation.

OPEN TRENCHING

CITY RAIL LINK ENABLING WORKS

PROJECT

The CRL Project is a 3.5 kilometre rail tunnel under central Auckland that will allow 30,000 people an hour to travel during peak times. At a current cost of approximately $2.5 billion the CRL Project is New Zealand’s biggest infrastructure project and is scheduled for completion in 2023/2024. CLIENT CONNECTUS, A MCCONNELL DOWELL/ HAWKINS JOINT VENTURE

SECTOR INFRASTRUCTURE

We were engaged by Connectus to undertake the first stage of the enabling works. This included locating and moving cables and pipelines that were in the way of the jacking shafts and the rail corridor. Approximately 500 underground services were exposed and moved without damage. As this was a high-profile project our Health, Safety and Environmental management was under constant scrutiny. Site management was also critical and we used innovative methods such as sound curtains and hydro excavation to help reduce noise, enhance safety and minimise damage. Our high level of performance on the project, especially in the areas of safety, innovation and technical difficulty, resulted in us winning the Category B 2016 Auckland CCNZ Hynds Construction Award.

SECTOR

MARCH CATO/

SEWER

WATERCARE

The project involved the installation of 270m of 630mm PE pipe to a tight grade by directional drilling. Sandy silt ground conditions made the job difficult which caused the excavations and drill hole to collapse at times. Despite this, the project was completed on time and within budget.

SCOTT POINT DIRECTIONAL DRILLING – HOBSONVILLE CLIENT

SECTOR

HARKER

WATERMAIN & SEWER

Scott Point is a masterplanned community that comprises a number of subdivisions. This project involved our civil and drainage crews installing water mains and rising and gravity sewer mains involving 3.5km of 355mm, 200mm and 180mm PE pipe. This was a challenging project due to difficult ground conditions and a tight timeframe. We successfully met health and safety requirements – there were no LTI’s – and we strictly adhered to environmental and quality standards. Also of note was the positive feedback we received from residents.

ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY

ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY

OUR SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES ARE SUBJECT TO CONSTANT MONITORING, REVIEW AND IMPROVEMENTS. THIS IS A FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF MANAGING OUR BUSINESS AND DELIVERING HIGH QUALITY SERVICES TO OUR CLIENTS.

NVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT E We’re familiar with working in difficult ground conditions, high-profile projects, on private property and carriageways. This means that our environment management needs to be both versatile and comprehensive. With every project we protect the stormwater from hazardous material and when in high density areas we use sound curtains to protect the public. QUALITY We have extensive management systems in place to ensure that site and office operations talk to each other, all documentation is up to date and timings and budgets are met. No two jobs are the same, so we adapt and innovate as we respond to new challenges, while maintaining quality standards. TRAINING We run in-house training in addition to external training such as first aid, STMS, working in confined spaces and NCEA/ NZQA Level 3 HDD Training. Members of our senior team are qualified NZQA assessors. In addition, employees are also involved in recognised Trade Certificate qualifications.

SIZE COUNTS

THE SMALL, BIG COMPANY I n many ways we’re not that different to larger companies. The same systems and processes, and absolute focus on safety, innovative thinking and high standards of service delivery. But our smaller size allows us to bring a number of benefits to the table. With less organisational layers we’re easier to get in touch with and our senior guys are close to the action. We also think there’s more transparency with a smaller company. We can run large projects – we have the scale and experience to do this – but we’re equally at home as a subcontractor. As a smaller company we think we’re a bit tighter and as a result more efficient. We don’t get bogged down in bureaucracy or communicating through layers of management. Over the past 20 years we’ve built a reputation for the quality of our work and our ability to be a good partner. These qualities have allowed us to develop strong relationships with both major utilities and construction companies, such as Vector, Fulton Hogan, Electrix, Northpower, Harker, HEB, Watercare, KiwiRail and Auckland Council.
