URP 516 Planning REPRESENTATION and COMMUNICATION Taubman College of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning Master of Urban and Regional Planning The University of Michigan COURSE OVERVIEW The purpose of this course is to sharpen the
students’
visual
communication
skills, serving as an instrumental basis for incoming physical planning studios and future practice. Technical workshops, weekly lectures, applied
lab
discussions,
exercises,
desk-crits,
and public presentations/
reviews with guest critics, ensure a dynamic learning structure. Looking at graphic representation as a powerful tool to visually communicate plans and designs, the course provides an analytical framework and a set of tools to operate at very different scales. The semester comprises both individual and team work, and it includes multiple venues for students to test the efficiency of their representation communication skills. In addition, students are required to submit their individual graphic portfolio with the course work developed over the semester. This is a graduate level 4-credit course especially recommended for students interested in the Physical Planning/Urban Design Concentration, and without any design background. Instructor:
