ARTIST STATEMENT

My travels to Asia began in 1970, when I served with the 7thMarines in the Que Son mountains of Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. In 1990, a time when American travel to Vietnam was prohibited, I returned to make a film. My journey was a search for understanding and personal reconciliation. The award winning films from this trip included CROSSING THE DMZ and BUDDHA’S RADIO. Since 2004, I have returned to Southeast Asia to explore Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. The selected images shown here are from these recent trips. The names of the places are distant, exotic and yet familiar to our emotional history: China Beach, the Citadel of Hue, Luang Prabang, Mekong River, Angkor Wat and the Golden Triangle. Making Merit is the Buddhist quest to find happiness in the present and peace in the next life. One aspect of Merit can be witnessed every morning as the monks collect alms and offer prayers in return. The visual choreography of the monks’ daily routines provides a starting point for this photo collection. The images I have selected use a restricted focus technique. By isolating small details within the frame, I hope to find the unique visual rhythms of the photograph. I have been making photographs and media art for nearly forty years. My work has been exhibited around the country and internationally in museums, galleries and film festivals. My photography is included in the collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Wustum Museum, Racine, WI, as well as featured in photography books, magazines and newspapers. I am currently the Production Manager for Media Services, Instructional Media Center and have worked at Marquette University for 32 years.
