1.01 MISSION & PROGRAM
OUR MISSION
The Sports Media Institute, (SMI) is a non-profit sports media training program that provides opportunities for
teen-youth to learn and develop marketable skills in the fields of sports journalism, sports management and sports entertainment.
THEPROGRAM
The Sports Media Institute, located on the campus of Marquette University,
is a ten-week, highly engaging media program that meets every Saturday starting in October. The program introduces high school students to the fields of sports journalism and sports marketing. Students selected for the program will produce a quarterly print magazine and four television segments that will center on local high school athletes. The journalism curriculum allows students the opportunity to produce sports content in the format of storytelling, feature writing, reporting, photography, broadcast journalism and videography. A typical package will consist of a print article, feature photographs and a digital segment. The marketing curriculum teaches students how to best market SMI’s content and merchandise by utilizing the 4Ps of marketing. A typical campaign will consist of print media, digital media, social media and an event.
BOOTCAMP
The Sports Media Institute will host a two-week summer BootCamp program
designed to introduce high school students to the experiences and expectations of the ten-week long Sports Media Institute program. Similar in curriculum design to the Sports Media Institute’s program, the students will learn skills in sports journalism, sports broadcasting and digital marketing.
TENSTUDENTS
12 BootCamp participants will be selected to participate in the ten-week long Sports Media Institute program. Selection will be determined by summer participation, achievement, interest in sports media and the desire to succeed. If you cannot attend the BootCamp, we accept “walk-ons” tryouts. Auditions will be held in late August.
