CHOOSING THE RIGHT APARTMENT

I

WATER STREET

THIRDWARD

APARTMENT BRADYSTREET EAST TOWN

STEP ONE: AMENITIES & BUDGET

Begin your search by making a list of all the required apartment amenities. Next, decide what you can afford. If your amenity’s list outweighs your budget, you may consider getting roommates. Some apartments are all inclusive, with utilities included in the rent, and some are not. Always inquire if there are additional expenses such as water, electricity, gas, cable, appliances, parking and Internet. In addition, ask about signing bonuses, special or discounts.

STEP THREE: TAKE A SNEAK PEEK

PAGE 14

Schedule a tour of your favorite apartments with the landlords or property owners. Try to visualize yourself living there. See if the apartment matches your personality.

WALKER’S POINT

f you are reading this article you are probably looking for an apartment, or you are simply preparing yourself for the process. Apartment hunting is not a complicated task as long as you know what you are looking for, and know how to organize your search. Realizing your daily routine is full of important tasks and crucial obligations; we have provided you with tips and ideas on how to simplify your apartment search.

EAST SIDE STEP TWO: THE SEARCH

Begin your search by researching apartments around the Marquette area. Word of mouth is often your best gauge, but that often provides limited but useful information. Try Internet sites such as www.MarquetteLiving.org, which will help you organize your search according to location, price, square feet and amenities. MarquetteLiving.org will allow you to login and setup a “Favorites” page that organizes and saves your favorite properties.

STEP FOUR: SIGNING SCHEDULE

After carefully analyzing all your options, the time will come to finally make a decision and a commitment. Keep in mind the landlord’s signing agreement’s schedule. Some apartments need a oneyear advance notification of your intention to rent. Some have physical waiting lists that require you to stand in line prior to assignment. Contact the landlord or property owner for schedules, time-lines and signing requirements.

STEP FIVE: RENTAL AGREEMENT

Signing the agreement is a legal and binding contract between you and your landlord. You will need to provide documents that prove you have the funding to pay for the apartment. This may include a pay stud, last year’s W2, your social security number for credit score purposes, or your most current bank account statement. Campus landlords realize parents can supplement their child’s rent, so they too may need to provide some sort of documentation. Ask about the financial need to secure the contract. Will you need first months, last months and the deposit when you sign the contract? If so, ask about payment options. Can you use direct deposit, checks or credit cards? Remember, in Marquette’s tight rental market it is often the one who has the paperwork and funding first, who will be considered first for the apartment.

STEP SIX: MOVE IN!

PAGE 15

Now that you have found the perfect apartment to live in, go ahead and start planning your move. You will have to consider many things, from summer storage to all the different decorations for your new home. For more tips on moving, please go to page 26 and read our article, “Moving In.” Good luck on the rest of your adventure!

ilwaukee is a city loaded with activities for everyone. There is amazing food located throughout the city and great night life as well. We have assembled a list of five of the most talked about regions for you to go explore. Included are the details about the area so that you know what to expect when you get there.

THIRDWARD

MILWAUKEE BRADYSTREET EAST TOWN

EAST SIDE EAST SIDE

This area, located near the shores of Lake Michigan, is home to some of the best running and biking routes in Milwaukee. Do not forget to check out Bradford beach when the weather warms up. Bradford hosts numerous volleyball tournaments on both local and national levels. If you walk off the shore just a few blocks, you will find great affordable dining and nightlife to end the day. How to get there? Take Bus #30 all the way to Prospect/North or the East Side stop. (Estimated time: 26 minutes).

THIRD WARD

PAGE 21

Located just south-east of Marquette campus you will find Milwaukee’s Historic Warehouse District. From boutique shops and theaters to the upscale bars and restaurants, it is no wonder that the Third Ward is one of the favorites. If you swing by the Milwaukee Public Market or any of the amazing brunch locations, you will find yourself beckoning to return. How to get there? Take Bus #14 all the way to the Wisconsin/Jefferson stop and take Bus #15 all the way to the Milwaukee/Buffalo stop. (Estimated time: 15 minutes).

WATER STREET

This is where nightlife happens in Milwaukee. Amazing happy hour specials are available every night of the week. Water Street is located along the east side of the Milwaukee River, but do not forget to check out the west side as well. Here you will find Old World 3rd Street featuring a piano bar, German restaurants, pubs and night clubs. The restaurants are open late to satisfy your two-in-the-morning hunger pangs. How to get there? Take Bus #30 all the way to the Wisconsin/Water stop. (Estimated time: 10 minutes).

BRADY STREET

If you want to mingle with some locals and get a taste of what Milwaukee has to offer on one short street, stop by this location. Brady Street has a combination of bars, coffee houses, boutiques, salons and quick places to eat that will rival anywhere in Milwaukee. If you are interested in watching world football, you must go to The Nomad World pub for their free weekend bacon and toast buffet. How to get there? Take Bus #14 all the way to the Humboldt/Brady stop. (Estimated time: 22 minutes).

WALKER’S POINT

This foodie paradise has some of the best places to eat while in Milwaukee. In Walker’s Point you can learn how coffee is roasted, beer and whiskey are made, and the history of Harley Davidson. moving in apartment your own

M

oving into a new apartment is an exciting time. Prior to moving there are a few things that need to be done. Here are three simple steps to keep in mind when having to move into a new place.

storage

1. Coordinate with your roommates what each will contribute. Figure out who is bringing the couch, chairs, television and coffee tables. Further, consider the kitchen and any other shared spaces.

2. Determine how to move your items. Friends are always a great source, but when they are not available there are numerous moving companies in the area that will help you pack, move and unload furniture.

3. Look for a storage facility. They are perfect for keeping your belongings safe and secure for the following school year.
