Marquette Compendium News of Faculty and Staff Activities SUMMER 2013

The summer 2013 issue of Compendium is a compilation of Marquette University faculty research, scholarship and accomplishments from December 2012 through May 2013, and grants reported by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs from November 2012 through May 2013.

The purpose of this compilation is to recognize faculty and staff who are making advancements in their fields of expertise, as well as allow fellow faculty to see opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Dr. Chae Yi $455,000 from the National Science Foundation to study new catalytic processes that give the desired products without forming wasteful byproducts that cause environmental pollution. This project investigates syntheses that employ readily-available alcohol substrates, tolerate a wide range of functional groups and generate only water as the by-product.

Dr. David Baker $428,264 from National Institutes of Health to study the effects of genetically silencing the xCT protein in rats, to advance understanding of the function of system xc-, which may be a contributing mechanism to central nervous system disease states such as drug addiction.
