The Book Shelf

Dr. Julia Azari The Presidential Leadership Dilemma: Between the Constitution and a Political Party — Examines how the president balances the competing demands of leading his political party and leading the nation, and investigates how recent presidents have navigated these increasingly rocky political waters. Focusing on campaign strategy, presidential rhetoric, relations with Congress, and domestic and foreign policy, the text presents a wide-ranging, detailed, and fascinating study of how contemporary presidents face the challenge at the heart of every presidency. See p. 7.

Dr. Bonnie Brennen Assessing Evidence in a Postmodern World — considers how researches might evaluate evidence when truth claims can no longer be made, addressing issues of perception, evidence, reality and postmodernism from a variety of different backgrounds, including history, ethics, cultural studies, law and social science. See p. 11.

of depression and suicide ideation has been documented for Latina girls. The text presents cutting-edge multiracial feminist frameworks for new and existing empirical findings and considers the influence of bullying, families, immigration and culture on Latina adolescent mental health. See p. 11.

Dr. Kevin Gibson An Introduction to Ethics — provides readers with the guiding critical questions needed to be considered in decision making, teaching students about the principles individuals apply to direct behavior. The text enhances readers’ abilities to form arguments and conclusions, developing a systematic and coherent ethical view of their own. See p. 22.

Dr. Armando Gonzalez-Perez Afro-Cuban Theatre of the Diaspora: Critical Essays — contains 11 essays written by highly regarded critics focusing on the work of several Cuban playwrights in exile. Each essay examine the subject of blackness with sensitivity and analysis. See p. 4.

Dr. Bonnie Brennen Contradictions — a novel that begins on November 9, 1938, in Berlin, Germany, on the afternoon before Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, and then flashes forward to 1980, when Rachel, a young Jewish woman at the beginning of her academic career and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, has recently been hired as the first female assistant professor of American history at a prominent East Coast university. The novel challenges the power of narrative to remake history, ultimately questioning the role of memory and storytelling in understanding the past. See p. 11.

Dr. Lisa Edwards Preventing Adolescent Depression and Suicide among Latinas: Resilience Research and Theory — offers a concise summary of contemporary research on the trend, since the 1960s, that in comparison to other ethnic and gender groups, a higher rate

See p. 8.

Winter 2014 — Compendium

Books published by Marquette University faculty and staff since the previous issue of Compendium.

Dr. Mickey Mattox

Dr. Olga Semulkhina

An Exposition of Genesis — presents Iohannes Oecolampadius’ lectures from the early days of the Protestant Reformation. In this series of lectures, delivered just months before his untimely death, Oecolampadius poured out his very life for the sake of the Reformation in Basel and the formation of the city’s first generation of Reformed pastors. See p. 9.

Understanding the Modern Russian Police — represents the culmination of ten years of research and an ongoing partnership between the Volgograd Academy of Russian Internal Affairs Ministry (VA MVD) and the Volgograd branch of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (VAPA). It provides a timely and comprehensive analysis of the historical development, functions and contemporary challenges faced by the modern Russian police. See p. 8.

Dr. Andrei Orlov Heavenly Priesthood in the Apocalypse of Abraham — examines the Apocalypse of Abraham, a vital source for understanding Jewish apocalypticism and mysticism. Written anonymously soon after the destruction of the Second Jerusalem Temple, the text envisions heaven as the true place of worship and depicts Abraham as an initiate of celestial priesthood. See p. 9.

Dr. John Pustejovsky Wenn sie das Wort Ich gerbraucht: festschrift für Barbara BeckerCantarino — comprises original essays celebrating Barbara Becker-Cantarino, whose prolific publications on German literary culture from 1600 to the 20th century are major milestones in the field of German cultural studies. See p. 4.

Dr. Jame Schaefer Environmental Justice and Climate Change: Assessing Pope Benedict XVI’s Ecological Vision for the Catholic Church in the United States — takes a closer look at the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI, often called the “green pope” because of his ecological commitments in his writings, statements and practical initiatives. Written by lay, ordained and religious Catholic theologians and scholars, the text explores four key areas in connection with Pope Benedict’s teachings: human and natural ecology/human life and dignity; solidarity, justice poverty and the common good; sacramentality of creation; and Catholic faith in action. See p. 9.

Larry Watson Let Him Go — a suspenseful, engaging novel set in the early 1950s in rural North Dakota, where George Blackledge, a retired sheriff, returns home to find his wife Margaret packing to leave — with or without him. Known for crisp images, resonant backdrops, and sharp characterizations drawn without flashy over-accessorizing, Watson traces the desperate lengths families will go to in order to protect their own. See p. 3.

Dr. Michael Wert Meiji Restoration Losers: Memory and Tokugawa Supporters in Modern Japan — explores the violence of the Meiji Restoration and the trauma of those who felt marginalized from the mainstream throughout modern Japan. The author argues that the commingling of local memory activists and nationally known politicians, academics, writers and treasure hunters formed interconnecting memory landscapes that promoted local figures as potential heroes in modern Japan. See p. 5.
