ABOUT MARQUETTE

Our namesake landmark, not only appears in our logo, but also houses the carillon you’ll hear ringing out every Wednesday. MARQUETTE HALL ,

When you need to study in peace or just want to see some precious Lord of the Rings history (Gandalf groupies, see page 31), the R AY N O R M E M O R I A L L I B R A R I E S have what you need, and probably in three or four different formats, versions or languages.

Our C E N T R A L M A L L is an outdoor oasis for gatherings, frisbee and sunshine. It’s surrounded by academic buildings and is home to St. Joan of Arc Chapel — our literal and spiritual campus centerpiece, described in detail on page 26.

ABOUT MARQUETTE

Making a difference starts with doing things a little differently. Actually, a lot differently. Marquette is where you’ll learn to use your heart as much as your head, to powerfully lead by passionately serving others, and where you’ll prepare, as St. Ignatius said, to go forth and set the world on fire. Ultimately, it’s where you’ll learn to BE THE DIFFERENCE.

5

ABOUT MARQUETTE

I’m Father Jacques Marquette, and since the university is named after me, you might say I’m a pretty big deal. (Save the short jokes.) In my day, I was a 17th-century explorer and Jesuit missionary. Now, at 379 years old, I make a great tour guide. Best of all, I fit neatly in your backpack. Follow my adventures on social media: @FAT H E R M A R QU E T T E

ABOUT MARQUETTE

THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY TO GET THE ANSWERS:

ASK THE QUESTIONS.

Knowledge has power. It can inform the mind and motivate the spirit. Because we’re a Catholic, Jesuit university, the search for and sharing of knowledge are important parts of what we do. But we’re not just sharing ideas; we’re seeking truth and exploring faith, informing every aspect of your education, career and life. At Marquette, you’ll be encouraged to seek new information, empowered to develop a personal belief system and asked to use what you learn for the greater good.

8

MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY

ABOUT MARQUETTE

Everything we do is part of something bigger. It’s why we pursue our mission: the search for truth, the discovery and sharing of knowledge, the fostering of personal and professional excellence, the promotion of a life of faith, and the development of leadership expressed in service to others. And at Marquette, this mission is a key part of our lives. It’s what guides our every action, big and small. Ask any student what we stand for and you’ll hear it loud and clear:

EXCELLENCE FAITH LEADERSHIP SERVICE Three Latin terms that have deep meaning in our Ignatian heritage: AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM To the greater glory of God. CURA PERSONALIS We provide education and care for each person with respect for his or her unique qualities, gifts and challenges as an individual. MAGIS We strive to help you do more and to be more.

THE BEST FIRST YEAR EVER. From the day you start your freshman year, you’re going to feel at home here. You’ll study a lot, for sure, but you’ll still have time for lots of laughs. There’s a ton to see and do, and, most important, plenty of people to meet who will treat you like family. But enjoy every second, because it’s going to go fast.

DON’T CALL IT A WEEKEND.

CAMPUS LIFE

WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED. Chances are, your weekends on campus will feel less like downtime and more like a two-orthree-day extravaganza, full of moments you’ll later refer to as, “Remember that one time?” Not that we’re opposed to lazy Saturdays or afternoon naps (sometimes they’re downright necessary), but between bowling, cheering, dancing, sledding, shouting from the front row and posting it all to Instagram, your futon will likely be gathering some dust.

This is it: your new hometown. It’s just as striking up close. Within it, you’ll find plenty of things to do: sports, music, festivals, restaurants, art, plays and pretty much whatever you’re into. Through student volunteer organizations and service learning classes, you’ll also find hundreds of ways to be the difference in Milwaukee’s diverse community.

CAMPUS LIFE

If you’re looking to get your foot in the door, Milwaukee boasts an extensive number of financial service firms, publishing and printing companies, and other industry leaders. Work with our CAREER SERVICES CENTER to book an internship and start practicing your firm handshake now. Milwaukee is home (and, in some cases, headquarters) to several Fortune 500 companies like Baird, HarleyDavidson, Johnson Controls, Manpower Group, Northwestern Mutual and Rockwell Automation, just to name a few.

Milwaukee’s lakefront is host to SUMMERFEST— the world’s largest music festival. We’re talking 11 days, 11 stages and more than 800 acts gathered on the shore of Lake Michigan.

Experience science and technology in full force at the DISCOVERY WORLD MUSEUM . It’s home to the Reiman Aquarium, an interactive diorama of the Great Lakes, and the Denis Sullivan — a threemasted, gaff-rigged, 19th-century replica schooner (that’s sailor talk for one seriously impressive ship).

I should warn you, I can’t swim. I’m made of stone, and my arms don’t move.

YOU ARE  THE DIFFERENCE

When you’re on campus, you’re just one short mile from the sunny shores of Lake Michigan. Head there to watch some pro volleyball, sample a little frozen custard or just chill with a cappuccino. If you’re really adventurous, enter the Strongest Man Competition at Bradford Beach. We’re just scratching the surface here. For the latest and greatest Milwaukee happenings, browse visitmilwaukee.org and onmilwaukee.com.

The MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM is one of the few structures where the building just might outshine the artwork (no offense to Picasso, Warhol, Monet and the other museum residents). And whenever you’re done gawking at the exterior, step inside for more than 40 galleries’ worth of eye candy.

BUT DON’T TOUCH THE ART. Prepare to witness some current masters of their crafts. Around our campus, painters, photographers, actors, writers, musicians, performers and poets (as well as those artists who can’t be labeled) are making a difference by making art. And the best part: You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate it.* Just stop by one of our many venues dedicated to creativity. * If you are one of the gifted few, we have 17 different clubs and organizations for you to share your creative genius, including Advertising Club, Writing Society and Dance, Inc.

VARSITY THEATRE Complete with a 32-foot stage, chorus risers and house lighting and sound, the Varsity Theatre is where our top actors, performers and musicians regularly raise goosebumps and bring crowds to their feet. HAGGERTY MUSEUM OF ART This is where creativity meets canvas (and paper, wood, plastic, cloth and metal). And thanks to regular lectures, workshops and performances, you can learn while you look.

SERVING OTHERS IS

THE SMARTEST THING YOU COULD EVER DO.

CAMPUS LIFE

Service learning is an academic program that blends community service with classroom theory. It’s what happens when you combine your love of helping others with your love of learning. Someone gets the help they need while you gain skills to enhance your future career (and the personal accomplishment that comes from doing good).

This is how SERVICE LEARNING becomes real: IN TELEVISION PRODUCTION CLASS, YOU MIGHT CREATE A VIDEO FOR

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF METRO MILWAUKEE TO HELP THEM RECRUIT MORE VOLUNTEERS.

THROUGH THE SOUTH AFRICA SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM, you might work in an HIV/TB clinic in Cape Town to help

IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITY. In Health Psychology class, you might plan and

LEAD A HALF-DAY PROGRAM for third- to eighth-grade students to teach them about nutrition, exercise and body image.

SERVICE LEARNING

45

WHO’S THE SMARTEST PERSON IN THE ROOM?

ACADEMICS

WE’RE LOOKING AT YOU. Classes here are designed to be a challenge. After all, it takes real work to become one of the world’s sharpest thinkers. Our faculty are here to help you in every way. And if you’re still pondering what major to choose, don’t worry: You’re not alone. In fact, more than 20 percent of our students are multi-interested (what others call “undecided”). Once you’re here, you’ll receive plenty of guidance, but whatever you eventually choose, don’t stop being interested in all sorts of experiences.

DIRECT ENTRY INTO YOUR PROGRAM

Marquette University — seven colleges and countless opportunities. Marquette operates on a direct-entry system, which means that you are admitted into one of our seven colleges. It doesn’t mean you need to select a major right off the bat, just that you can get headed in the general direction right away.

ACADEMICS

You’ll be admitted to a single college, where the department that offers your major is housed. Your faculty adviser will be in that college, too. But you’ll still be able to take classes outside of your college or switch colleges if you decide to change your major. In addition to our 83 majors and 78 minors, we offer preprofessional programs for all of you future doctors, lawyers and dentists, described on page 102.

Video equipment records the learning process in action, so professors and clinical educators can review with you exactly what went right and what you could have handled differently.

There’s a place for almost any situation. The lab includes a six-bed hospital suite with two intensive care rooms, two medical surgical rooms, one pediatrics room, and one labor and delivery suite. It has more points of interest than we have space to tell you about here. But one thing we can definitively say about the whole world is that there are thousands of Marquette students out there being the difference in it. In fact, 24 percent of our students study abroad. When you go, here are a few things you won’t have to worry about: graduating late (you won’t), speaking like a local (an intro language course is recommended but not required), knowing what to do once you’re there (we give you all the prep you need). BE THE DIFFERENCE.

Being the difference happens wherever there are people in need and ideas in action. So when we boldly declare that you will BE THE DIFFERENCE HERE, we’re not referencing a spot on the map. HERE is not a set of coordinates. HERE has no boundaries. It does, however, begin right here, at Marquette.

Marquette University does not discriminate in any manner contrary to law or justice on the basis of race, color, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, disability, veteran’s status or national origin in its educational programs or activities, including employment and admissions. At the same time, Marquette cherishes its right and duty to seek and retain personnel who will make a positive contribution to its religious character, goals, and mission in order to enhance the Catholic, Jesuit tradition.
