Your Journey Begins Congratulations on your engagement! As you start your wedding planning journey, it is likely to be one of the most exciting times of your life and one of the busiest. Your wedding day will be a celebration of your love for each other but be aware of spending more time planning this one event than preparing for your marriage. Over the years, the Marriage Meander Company has realised the importance of using trusted resources, and we have developed several tools to help make your planning fun and efficient. Why not make use of them all and you will save time that you can spend on preparing for your future together? Our website will keep you updated with events and relevant information and inspiration, our WedPlan App provides useful tools, tips, and reliable contacts, and if you are recently engaged, join us on a Marriage Meander Journey for the best wedding planning day ever. While these tools and this book are designed to help with each stage of your wedding planning, I’d also like to share two key factors that I know will help you build a strong foundation for a life-long marriage: Firstly, communication, which is the quickest route to connection and one of the most important elements of a healthy marriage. It will be a key to smoother planning if you remember that words are powerful – be intentional about using them to build your partner up rather than break down. Share your feelings, express your dreams and needs, but do so in a way that will encourage discussion and not create conflict. There are some important topics that should be discussed before you walk down the aisle and share your vows. As two individuals from different backgrounds, you probably grew up believing different things about marriage, family, children, work and religion. Your views on these will have a significant impact on your relationship, so have some open and honest conversations
and share your expectations and dreams so you know what each is taking into the marriage. Secondly, just as having a budget and sticking to it will be one of the most challenging aspects of your wedding planning, money is likely to lead you to tough times and hard conversations in your marriage. It’s important to discuss and align your financial expectations and come to an agreement about how you will manage your money once married. Set some goals together regarding saving, investing and giving and revisit them every year. A great marriage doesn’t just happen – it takes time, compromise and commitment from both sides, but the effort is worth it. Looking back on 29 years of the most amazing marriage, I realise that the best gift we can have is to love and be loved by someone unconditionally until ‘death do us part’. The story of our lives is about the relationships we have, the memories we share and the experiences we enjoy with someone special by our side. A new chapter is about to begin as you share it with that special person. Have some fun, break some rules, but don’t take a single day for granted as, together, you embark on this journey of love, life and laughter.

Beyond Measure
Off to a Great Start Words of Wisdom This is one of the most important days of your life and it should reflect your personalities. Remember to keep focused on what’s important to you as a couple. – Debbie, Etc Events
“Will you marry me?” is the life-changing question that sets into motion a myriad of feelings and a chain of events and planning that will lead to your wedding day and beyond to a lifetime together. Whether you have been dreaming of your wedding day since childhood or have been swept off your feet and taken by surprise, you will soon realise that there is much to plan and your new focus will be filled with images of the day to come. Weddings are filled with details and it’s easy to get carried away with the small things. Before you begin, sit down with your partner and discuss the type of wedding that you’d both like. It’s advisable to be in agreement before you meet with your parents. Communication is going to be a key factor in planning – not only will good communication minimise conflict, but it will help your understanding following through into your marriage.
What to discuss with your partner Style: Whether you want a casual affair or a formal event, large or more intimate, make sure you are on the same page. If you are adventurous, you may opt for something unique, or your dream might be a destination wedding – either in the country or abroad, budget permitting. Think of the weddings you have attended that have left a lasting impression and this may assist with which direction to go or what to avoid. Time of day and year: Decide whether you want a daytime wedding or if you’d prefer to party late into the night. Although most couples believe that a Saturday is the best day for a wedding, many venues offer lower rates on other days. Do you have a preference for the
time of year? Summer is generally a more popular time to get married, but Winter weddings allow for a cosy atmosphere with fires and candles warming guests and the visual setting. You will not only need to take the seasonal weather into consideration but also look at the school and public holidays, international guests and major sporting events that may affect your date.
OFF TO A GREAT START
How to Start your Wedding Planning
Budget: What are the two of you able to and realistically prepared to spend? If parents or others are contributing, confirm what they want to or are able to assist with. Have these discussions and get clarity early on to avoid misunderstanding and disappointment. Keep in mind that the number of guests will strongly influence the cost of the wedding so drawing up the guest list by all concerned will be a significant part of the budgeting process. Cultural Considerations: Two people from very different backgrounds are becoming one. Know and respect one another’s culture and differences and work together to incorporate each other’s traditions. Finally, once the two of you have discussed the wedding details and agree on a budget, the style and timing, meet with your parents. You will know how best to handle this. If both sets of parents get on well, invite them to dinner together, otherwise have them over separately. Communicate clearly what you have discussed with your fiancé and invite them to become involved where it suits you and they are able or willing.

Why Hire a Wedding Planner? 1. A Wedding Planner can help you avoid costly mistakes and negotiate deals with your suppliers. They know what should be included in your contracts and how much things should cost. The number of wedding suppliers available is daunting and it’s their job to know who will give you the best rates and the best results. 2. They only deal with the most trusted and professional companies as they need to look after their own reputation too. 3. Your wedding planner will create all the schedules for the run-up to the wedding and the timeline of the main event itself which they make sure everyone sticks to. They organise every supplier and liaise
4. All Wedding Planners love lists! From budgets, timelines, guest lists, song lists, photo lists, spreadsheets you name it, they have a template for it all and it will cover every detail you can imagine as well as a lot that you won’t have even thought of. They have lists of questions for each supplier so that you know you are hiring the very best and even have that all important list for the photographer so they can get great shots of every important detail throughout the day. 5. They are super creative and can make even the most luxurious and stunning Pinterest board come to life within your budget. 6. Wedding Planners are all about perfection. It takes a long time and a lot of hard work to organise a seamless wedding and they think of all the extra little details that usually get overlooked. They bring couples’ ideas to life, make the impossible possible and do it all with a smile.

with them every step of the way, so everything is streamlined and all runs according to plan.
7. A big part of their job is negotiation and mediation between family members and friends. Weddings bring out the best and sadly the worst in people. Jealousy, trust issues, estranged family members, crazy mother in laws – they’ve seen it all. They know how to give a different perspective and diffuse troublesome situations to help the engaged couple deal with the emotional rollercoaster rides that are sometimes thrown at them. 8. Hiring a wedding planner is like having your very own PA in the world of weddings. You can have them help you as much as you want and most are
9. Booking a venue with an on site coordinator is very helpful, but it’s not the same as having a wedding planner. Be aware of what they are allowed to or can actually do. They may come as part of the ‘wedding package’ and help you with any questions you have about the venue and types of suppliers you will be allowed. They will usually give you a list of recommended suppliers which can be great as they’ve worked with them before but be wary as sometimes the venue receives a commission from these companies if you hire them, so they might not be the best choice for your wedding. If you haven’t hired a Wedding Planner you will need to research these companies.

10. Having a Wedding Planner helping you gives you more time to enjoy your wedding planning journey. No-one wants to be at their laptop at two in the morning searching 500 local photographers and wondering when everything will feel fun and magical again. You don’t need to shed tears over the seating plan whilst your fiancée is trying to sneak out of the door to meet his mates for a quick drink. Your Money Matters
A beautiful wedding is possible no matter what your budget, but it’s important to have a spending strategy to suit your taste and wallet. Before you start planning, decide on how much you are prepared to spend on this event and find out who else might be contributing. Although it’s often difficult to discuss finances, your first consideration is that your parents may have no idea of wedding costs. Be open and honest and if they are going to be contributing, give them an idea of your anticipated budget. Communicate your expectations with your fiancé and family members from the start and decide on what is most important to each of you. For example, if you are a foodie, you may want to ensure that your guests have a meal to remember, while your partner may want to put more emphasis on music and entertainment. You will both need to compromise on some things, as wedding costs tend to get out of hand quickly. Be aware that, on average, couples tend to spend 10–15% more than originally planned, so set your total below what you really can afford. Although tradition dictates that the bride’s parents pay for most of the wedding, this is not always possible. Today, many couples are footing the bill themselves and so it is a good idea to start saving on a regular basis as soon as you have said “yes”. A good suggestion is to open a savings account for your wedding fund and deposit 10–20% of each salary into this account. Add any extra income you might receive, and you’ll get excited as you watch the balance grow and reach your goal together. This will also set you up with good habits for your marriage and you can keep this account going after your wedding to use as savings for future holidays and emergencies – you’ll never regret it.
How much should I spend on my wedding?
If you spend so much that you go into debt or are

paying for your wedding long after the event, you have spent too much. It’s difficult to start planning until you know how much things are going to cost, and a lot will depend on your guest numbers and the type of wedding you want. The good news is that there are many ways to save and avoid spending too much.
How much should I allocate to each category?
Here is a very general guideline. You will need to decide what is more important to each of you and if you want to emphasise one aspect and spend more in one area, you will obviously need to reduce expenses elsewhere: 45–50% Venue and Catering (including cake) 10–12% Photo and Video 8–10% Wedding Planner and Miscellaneous 8–10% Décor and Flowers 8–10% Bridal Wear and Suits 6–8% Music and Entertainment 4–6% Hair and Makeup 2–3% Stationery 2–3% Gifts and Favours It’s also advisable to allocate 5-8% for surprise overheads which are likely to happen, or other expenses

How to keep to your budget
Firstly, you need to have a system to track your spending. The Marriage Meander has created a useful tool for you to do this. Download the free ‘WedPlan’ App on Apple or Android devices and start using the Budget Tool as soon as you start planning. Go through your budget, or ‘spending plan’ together and keep talking about it as you book your venue and pay deposits for your service providers. Revisit it regularly and adjust as needed. Be realistic. Make wise decisions. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of your wedding which may lead to overspending. With each financial decision, ask yourself, “Is this the wise thing to do?” You won’t look back when you get to your wedding day with no debt.
Champagne Carriages
OFF TO A GREAT START
such as special transport arrangements – you may only discover that there’s nothing quite as romantic as a horse and carriage later on in your planning! Remember your honeymoon expenses too, which are not included here.

Using the average cost for a wedding (ask any wedding planner), decide if you can spend more, the same or less than that. Once you have a total budget figure, then apply the suggested percentages to the guideline given to see how much you can spend in each category. Now when you ‘shop’ for the various aspects of your wedding, you have an immediate idea if it will fit into your budget. This can often be challenging and if you find it exceeds your limit, you will need to creatively reduce or eliminate something else, or increase your budget. Remember that borrowing or debt should not be an option to consider. Your budget limitations do not need to be negative if you find fun and creative ways around them. They can make your special day more memorable and the planning process much more enjoyable.

Your Wedding Ceremony
“Happily ever after” is not a fairy tale. It’s a choice. Your love story is unique… To make sure your wedding ceremony is just as unique, secure the marriage officer’s service once you have booked the venue, so you have enough time to plan this important part of your wedding day. Make sure the marriage officer is registered at Home affairs and is familiar with Home Affairs regulations (www.dha.gov.za).
To keep in mind when planning your ceremony •
Plan the ceremony set up once you know the venue because it is important to have enough space for the couple and the bridal party as well as the photographer and videographer to easily move around.
Discuss in detail the criteria of your ceremony, but also make sure that the marriage officer will complete the marriage register which you will sign with two witnesses on your wedding day. It is important to receive a South African marriage certificate on your wedding day and confirm that the marriage officer will register your marriage personally at Home Affairs within three working days of your wedding.
•
If you have a musician, band or string quartet, make sure there is enough space to accommodate them and for everyone to enjoy their performance.
•
Reserve seats for parents/grandparents and the bridal party (if they will be seated). Ask a person continued on the next page

•
Inform the marriage officer of all those involved with the ceremony: DJ, musician, videographer, photographer, wedding planner and any other party who might be doing a reading/poem etc.
•
Your vows should be meaningful, so take the time to write them. The focus during the ceremony is after all on you, the couple.
•
Make sure to have a plan B if you have an outside ceremony so you do not have to stress on the day if the weather does not play along.
•
Ensure that the best man will have water close by – you need to plan for the unforeseen.
•
It might come in handy if the groom, maid of honour or parent close by have tissues ready.
•
Make sure that the registration table is big enough for signing the register. Use the bride’s bouquet as décor to save costs.
So much planning goes into your wedding day, so remember that it should be about your love for each other and your future together.
•
Discuss all details before, during and after the ceremony with the marriage officer. He/she needs to be informed in order to take responsibility for the order of service.
Enjoy every moment of your special day.

Sign your Antenuptial Contract before you get married. Don’t make assumptions – an ANC is planning for your life together. – Cathy, J Leslie Smith Attorneys

I DO
Legally Speaking
Remember that when planning your wedding, all your efforts should not be focused on one remarkable day, but on a lifetime of love and shared experiences. Before you get carried away with all the details that will consume you for the next few months, there are some important questions that you need to ask to ensure that you are making an informed decision regarding your matrimonial regime. There are two matrimonial property systems that could apply to your marriage in South Africa:
Marriage in community of property
If you do not sign an antenuptial contract before your wedding, you will automatically be married in community of property. All your assets become part of a joint estate, in which you and your spouse will share assets and liabilities equally. This can directly affect your ability to conduct business or buy and sell immovable property. As a couple, you and your spouse would remain jointly and severally liable for all liabilities incurred during the marriage, which will expose all your assets to risk.
spouse. You retain separate control of your respective estates, during the course of the marriage, but you share equally in the growth of your estates on dissolution. If you would like to be married out of community of property, you must sign an antenuptial contract in front of a Notary Public before your marriage. Alternatively, an application can be made to the High Court to change your marital system after the marriage, however, the costs involved are high, and can be prohibitive, for most newly married couples. By Cathy Smith www.jlesliesmith.com
Marriage out of community of property
With the exclusion of accrual By signing an antenuptial contract before your wedding, you and your spouse will have separate estates and be entitled to contract freely in respect of your respective assets and liabilities. No joint estate is created and you are not responsible for your spouse’s debts. On death or divorce, each party walks away with his or her own assets and liabilities. With the application of accrual In addition to providing for separate estates, this option provides for a sharing of the assets acquired during the course of the marriage, in the event of death or divorce. The growth of both estates during the course of the marriage is measured and a calculation is applied to share the difference in growth equally between you and your

Location Words of Wisdom You should be as happy with the venue owners as you are with the look and feel of the venue. After all, they are the ones that will ensure your perfect plan comes together on the day in a stress-free way. – Glynnis, Talloula
Choosing where you’ll get married is usually the first, and one of the most important wedding decisions you’ll make. Before you start visiting venues and begin making your way to the numerous possibilities, here are some suggestions to assist with narrowing your search: Deciding on your budget and number of guests before venturing out will avoid wasting time visiting venues that might not be viable. It’s important to find out what is included in the hire and the cost per person. Many venues will have a rate to hire the reception hall and charge per head for catering, while others may give an all-inclusive figure, incorporating the venue, catering and various services into a cost per person. Most often, the venue hire includes the use of tables, chairs, basic linen, cutlery and crockery. Some may include the use of specialised chairs or even a limited selection of décor. Don’t be shy to find out these details up front, as it will avoid unnecessary disappointment when extras are added after you have paid a deposit.

Selecting your Venue
An important aspect to keep in mind is the inclusion of a chapel. Most venues will have a chapel nearby, if not on the property, and this may add additional costs. If the venue does not have a chapel, you could erect a marquee or tent on the same property – just make sure that the venue will allow this. The setting might be ideal for a garden or outdoor ceremony but remember that you cannot control the weather and you’ll need to have an alternate option. The type of venue should be chosen based on the atmosphere and style you desire your wedding to have. continued on the next page
Beyond Measure at Lythwood
17
Selecting your Venue continued Whether informal, elegant, formal or opulent, it should reflect your personalities as a couple. When choosing the setting and location for your wedding, remember that this is about having your friends and family in one place to celebrate with you, so consider practicalities versus making a statement in pursuit of being unique. If your reception is more than an hour away and your guests cannot easily return home, you will also need to consider whether there is enough accommodation on the premises, or close by. At this point, your wedding becomes a ‘destination wedding’ and available entertainment for the weekend should be considered. Be aware of how long in advance you may have to book your venue, and at what time of year it will be so that weather conditions can be taken into account. The level of service you receive when being shown around a venue is usually indicative of what to expect on the day. Most venues will have staff on hand to show you around and answer questions but it’s advisable to make appointments to ensure they are available. Once you have booked, most venues are happy for you to make appointments throughout your planning to discuss details or questions you may have. Keep in mind that it is generally easier to do this with your venue coordinator telephonically or via email. After your first viewing, it’s natural to want to take respective families to see the venue and though it might not be necessary to have a meeting with the venue staff at this point, it’s a good idea to let them know you are coming so they can assist with questions the family may have, especially about finances when parents are footing the bill! Menu decisions and finer details regarding décor etc can also be discussed telephonically but it’s a good idea to meet

Midlands
The KZN Midlands is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the country, offering stunning views, lush rolling hills, rivers and valleys. With many world-class venues to choose from and with so much on offer, your choice might be a challenge, so refer to the venue table at the end of this section before you go searching. The Midlands is a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg and about 1½ hours from Durban, making the area an ideal destination to bring families together. Most venues offer exclusivity, which is not to be taken for granted, as you can’t put a price on it when the whole property is ‘yours and your guests’ for the day or weekend.

Intimate Weddings
With increasing costs and a trend towards having a more intimate occasion, many couples are choosing to share their wedding day with only their close family and friends, providing a truly memorable experience. Saving or reallocating money is one of the many advantages of having fewer guests. As your guest numbers increase, costs go up not only for catering and beverages, but also for décor, linens and flowers. Another benefit of keeping it small is being able to involve your guests in the ceremony – they can each read a line of a prayer or poem, mention something special about you as a couple, encircle you as you say your vows or ‘warm the rings’ by passing them around before you say “I Do.” You will also be able to interact with your guests on a more personal level, rather than running from table to table, trying to spend a few minutes with each, which can be tiring and can result in you missing out on your meal. For those who are eco-conscious, having a smaller wedding reduces your carbon footprint and the impact of your day on our world. Planning is also usually less stressful, giving you more flexibility and often more time to focus on the details.

Many venues that traditionally host larger weddings also have options available for smaller celebrations, so make some enquiries before booking. However, having a smaller event will open more opportunities for your location selection. There are some venues, like those represented on these pages, that offer something unique and specialise in providing a wonderful space for your special day. They will be more than happy to accommodate your intimate occasion.

Does the venue hire fit my budget? Before you start looking at venues, decide what you can/are willing to spend.
How friendly and accommodating are the staff ? You will be dealing quite a lot with them, so they should be responsive and polite at least.
Does the venue offer different rates for different days of the week/seasons? Some venues may offer lower rates for weekday weddings or during winter.
Is there an on site wedding planner or coordinator? Some venues offer wedding planning services – find out what is included.
What does the venue hire include? Chapel, tables, chairs, cutlery, glassware; waiters and bar staff; accommodation? Does the venue have a cut off time? If you are allowed to go past a certain time (usually midnight) what is the additional cost? What deposit will you need to pay and by when? Some venues will allow you to pay instalments, leading up to the day. When is the latest you can make changes to the reservation? If you need to change your date, find out what penalties may occur for changes.
Who will be present on the day of your wedding? You might deal with the coordinator leading up to the day but check if they will be there. How secure is the venue? Is there safe parking, security personnel, limited access for guests only? Does the venue have in-house catering, list preferred outside caterers or allow you to hire your own caterer? What menu options are available? There are often various price options. Does the catering fit within your budget? Food is one of the biggest costs.
What is the cancellation policy? Read the contract carefully to avoid possible conflict and disappointment.
Does the venue provide bar services or can you bring in your own alcohol? If they allow you to bring in your own drinks, check corkage costs.
Is the venue available for your proposed date? If you are not flexible on the date, find this out before anything else.
Does the venue have their own vendors that you are obliged to use, or can you use your own service providers?
How many guests will you have? Is the venue large enough, or possibly too large? How accessible is the venue for elderly or disabled guests? Consider distance from the chapel to reception, wheelchair access etc if needed. Does the venue offer exclusivity? Will there be other groups using the venue at the same time? Will this affect you?

Checklist for Booking your Venue
If you plan a garden or outdoor ceremony, what is the plan B in case of rain? You do need an alternative.
Check the inclusions and restrictions regarding dĂŠcor: Is draping available, is there an additional cost? Do they allow candles/moving furniture? When can you have access to the venue to set up? Also, check what time you need to vacate the property on the day of setting up.

The Drakensberg truly is one of the most spectacular regions in South Africa. The looming panorama of peaks provides a spectacular backdrop for any celebration and the overshadowing scale of nature is breathtaking. There are a number of beautiful places to get married in the various regions of the Drakensberg, each with its unique look and feel. The berg is lushly green from spring to the start of autumn which many people opt for but boasts wonderfully warm hues in winter as well. If you have many travelling guests, the area is conveniently situated between Gauteng and Durban and allows the feeling of really escaping whilst not being inconveniently out of reach.

Tastes: Cakes Words of Wisdom It’s important to do a cake tasting to ensure your wedding cake not only looks awesome but will also taste amazing. – Roz, Roz’s Beautiful Cakes
TASTES
Wedding Cakes
There have been many traditions regarding wedding cakes over the years, originating in Italy where the cake was broken over the bride’s head as a symbol of fertility. In the seventeenth century, an unmarried woman would place her piece of wedding cake under her pillow to improve her chances of finding a husband. More recently a tier of the wedding cake was kept for the first child’s christening.
If you are having trouble agreeing on a flavour you can please everyone by having a different flavour for each tier. Your cake should be consistent with your theme but remember it is as personal a choice as the rest of your wedding – so go with what you love.
Gone are the days of these traditions and you no longer have to serve fruit cake decorated with fondant icing. Although much has changed, marriages have brought together ingredients from across the globe to create sensations that are literally ‘out of this world’. There are many delicious ideas for cake flavours, frostings, fillings and sauces so decide what appeals to you both and then go cake tasting. The cake is regularly the centre of attraction in the reception room and is often served for afternoon tea (the first taste sensation for your guests), or as part of the dessert (the lasting memory of a wonderful evening). Apart from the number of guests, an important factor to take into consideration is the budget. Costs will increase with size, number of tiers, detail and complexity of icing as well as the quality of the ingredients. Many confectioners will offer advice and tastings but don’t expect them to bake you samples of every one of their specialities.

Wedding Catering Food is an important part of any function and will be remembered by your wedding guests, so give it due consideration. Many venues provide their own catering and usually offer a variety of wedding menus. You should be able to combine different dishes from various menus or the chef will be able to tailor-make a selection on your behalf. Be aware of any costs involved in adapting an existing menu. When selecting your venue, confirm that the style of menu will suit your own and your guests’ taste.
Tastes: Catering Words of Wisdom
We recommend that a punch or juice is served after the ceremony together with some light canapés as wedding guests often arrive hungry. – Wade, CHC Catering
54
If the venue does not offer catering, they will usually recommend their preferred suppliers, or you may have the flexibility to choose your own. Make sure they are reputable and get a few references if you do not know them. It is not a good idea to attempt to do your own catering or get family or friends to do your wedding food unless they have had plenty of experience catering for weddings. A lot can go wrong with the food and you spend so much time and money on your special day, you do not want to ruin it by serving cold, soggy or dried out food, or worse still, running out before your guests have all been fed. If you are having a large function, it’s preferable to go with a buffet-style menu. The cost will be dependent on the number of courses and your choice of food. When deciding on your menu, take into consideration the season and time of day as well as dietary requirements of your guests. A knowledgeable caterer will be able to advise you on what would be most popular and if your request would be suitable to serve under your specific circumstances. The venue or caterer will typically do a food tasting to help you make final decisions and ensure you know what you will be getting on the day. A popular option for more than 60 guests is a plated starter, buffet main course and plated dessert. If you are
TASTES
David Weeks
serving canapĂŠs with cocktails, these could replace a starter. You could use your wedding cake as part of the dessert or to serve with tea after the ceremony while you have your photos taken. This way there is less waste, and your cake becomes an important part of the menu. The largest part of your wedding budget will probably be allocated towards the catering. Remember to keep within your financial plan, be willing to compromise and take the advice of those who have had years of experience and only want the best option for you.

Behind the Scenes with your Caterer Whether you are planning a casual canapé evening for 50 or a formal dinner for 250 guests, there’s a lot of time, planning, teamwork, creativity and preparation that goes into serving fabulous food at your wedding. The first meeting with you, the client, will probably take place 6–12 months before the day, enabling the caterer to find out what you want and how they can create it for you. The menu will be devised, quantities estimated, pricing worked out and a proposal presented. Once you are happy, they will prepare food tastings, (which often require counselling as well as catering skills!) and finalise the choices. It takes years of experience to know what will suit your budget and location, depending on season as well as your guests, so it’s a good idea to take advice from those who know what will work best.
56
If you have hired a reputable company, you can rest assured that if anything does go wrong on the day, you will never know about it. A good caterer will be prepared for the unexpected and apart from taking bags of ice, multiple coolers and portable burners, they are likely to have all bases covered. Wade from CHC says they never leave home without packing their ‘Glory Box’, complete with candles, first aid, scissors, tape and everything likely to be required ‘just in case’. Your caterer is likely to be under a lot of pressure and on his/her feet for 16 hours on the day of your wedding. By the end of the night, they will be smiling on the outside, but probably crying on the inside, so treat them with the kindness and the respect they will deserve after satisfying your guests.
Your baker not only spends days baking and fashioning your dream cake, but also carries the responsibility of getting it safely to the venue, (often a difficult task on long, bumpy roads) and setting up this very special element of your day. Roz, from Roz’s Beautiful Cakes, says: “It’s the most rewarding feeling to stand back and be proud of what I have created for the couple. I often send a photo to the bride (who will be getting ready) and it makes all the tension and stress of the previous 48 hours so worth it, reminding me that I love what I do.”

The colour, texture and design you choose for your invitations should be carried through the rest of your stationery on the wedding day. A good wedding stationery specialist will put your mind at ease and guide you through the process from briefing to completion. With technology, many couples are choosing to go the digital route. Whereas this is great for your ‘Save the date’, directions, and RSVPs, there is still something special about receiving a beautiful envelope with a real invitation. To help with choosing the wording in your invitations, look online, collect other invitations and combine wording to suit your personality and style. Keep the wording short and to the point and ask your stationer for assistance if needed.
Type out the final wording and get it checked to make sure spelling and language are correct. It’s advisable to get all your stationery printed at the same time. Guest List Guidelines
One of the biggest and often most challenging tasks you will face early on in your planning process is deciding who to invite to your wedding. Some of the common concerns are: • • • • •
62
Too many guests for the venue to accommodate. Offending people who you can’t include. Too large to fit your budget. Unbalanced – inviting too many people from one side. Including people you don’t know but your partner or parents would like to invite.
Here are some guidelines to help you go about drafting your guest list and keeping the peace:
Ready?
Before you start looking for your wedding venue, you should have an idea of how many guests you’d like. This way you’ll know how the size of different venues fit in with your attendance requirements. At some stage,
JUST WRITE
you may have to decide which is more important – your dream venue or the number of people on your guest list. This will help with your final decision. Keep in mind that the cost will go up with the number of guests.
Get set…
Coming up with a final list of names can be a difficult task, especially if you must limit numbers. The bride and groom’s parents should be involved in drafting the guest list, especially if they are contributing financially. One suggestion is to divide the total number of possible guests into thirds for the bride and groom and both sets of parents to nominate guests respectively. In this way, you will have equal representation between the families and your friends. Realistically, you can’t invite all of your friends and family. If you’ve lost contact with people recently, or you can’t imagine having dinner with them in a year from now, don’t feel guilty about not inviting them. It’s also not practical to invite everyone from your workplace, neighbours and siblings’ friends. With good long-standing friends or family who live overseas, it is polite to invite them, so that they feel included but make it clear that you will not be offended if they decline. However, be prepared if they are delighted and accept the invitation!
Go!
Your Seating Plan is also likely to create a challenge and just when you think you have everyone seated in the perfect position, a late RSVP will come in or a guest will fall in love and want to bring an unexpected partner. One option is to allocate tables, but let guests choose their own place to sit. Download the WedPlan App on Apple and Android devices for a useful RSVP, Guest List, and Seating Plan tool. You can also keep a record of the gifts you receive, which will be invaluable in the future, as well as thank you notes you’ve sent – something you don’t want to forget.

Look after your skin! A bride should make sure she has an excellent skin care routine. – Candice, Blush Pro Make-up
Your wedding day will be remembered for a long time after the event. The moments will be captured in photos, on film and in the memories of your family and friends. As the bride, you will be the centre of attention and you’ll want to glow with health and beauty. You might want to get (or keep) your body and mind in shape with a sensible diet and regular exercise, to lavish care on your skin, hair, teeth and nails. It’s a good idea to start a few months before to ensure that your desired look comes together. Above all else, have realistic expectations and don’t go overboard with unachievable goals. You want to look good but not at the cost of your health or sanity! If you are not a regular visitor to a beauty salon, now is the time to consult a professional beauty therapist. She will be able to assist you with a skin care routine to suit your skin type, lifestyle and budget! Not only will regular facials leading up to your wedding ensure that your skin is in fabulous condition, but this will be a time where you will be able to lie back and take time out from the stresses of wedding planning. Your beauty therapist will also be able to assist you in shaping your eyebrows, the removal of unwanted hair and even advise you on tanning.

Hair Care
It is important to visit your hair stylist regularly before your big day. Discuss any hair or scalp concerns that you have – (s)he will be able to recommend professional products to assist in achieving and maintaining optimally healthy hair. You’ll also want plenty of time if you are planning a new style, colour or dramatic change, just in case the result isn’t what you envisaged, and you want to fix it. When visiting your stylist to discuss your hair or have a trial, remember to take your hair accessories with you. If you can, take a photo of your dress as this will help in deciding what hairstyle will suit your dress. continued on the next page

The services of a professional makeup artist are well worth investing in. You would probably have worked so hard to create the ideal look that you will want your face to be flawless and radiate beauty. Your makeup artist will know the best foundation to use to complement your skin tone, cover or correct the appearance of flaws and imperfections, that will be long-lasting and, very importantly, be nonreflective to look natural in your photographs. (S)he will be able to suggest lip and eye colours that highlight your facial features rather than those that match your bridesmaids’ dresses! It’s important that you look natural and feel comfortable. If you are not accustomed to wearing makeup, you can keep the colours neutral. Waterproof mascara is advisable for your wedding, just in case you shed a few emotional tears. Spend time with your makeup artist, not only at your trial and on your wedding day but consider asking for a few makeup lessons. You can purchase the colours (foundation, lipstick and eye colour) that the makeup artist recommends and learn the correct application techniques. Not only will you look stunning on your wedding day but you will be able to create the look yourself on your honeymoon and on your return. Using makeup correctly will help you feel more beautiful and confident in life. Don’t forget that your groom fell in love with you and is marrying you for who you are. You must still look like you, only the best version of you so that he says “Wow” when you walk down the aisle, not “Who is she?”

All Dressed Up Words of Wisdom
When shopping for a wedding gown, take someone along whose opinion you trust, but keep this limited to one or two people. – Meliza, Meliza Mary Bridal Wear
Shopping for your wedding dress is part of the planning you can really look forward to. A good place to start is by browsing magazines and bridal shows and deciding what you like. The fabric will play an essential role in fashioning your gown and you should consider colour, texture and detail as well as the style. There are three basic options for acquiring your dream gown: You can have your dress designed and handmade by a dressmaker or couturier; you can purchase a gown new or ‘pre-loved’ or you can hire one. Whichever option you decide to go for, it usually takes time to source, design or get altered, and should be arranged for about six months in advance. Final fittings could be done a week or two before your big day, allowing for the adage that you will lose weight in the countdown to your wedding.
Having your dress designed and made
To design and make your ‘one-of-a-kind’ wedding gown, you will need to seek the services of a dress designer, dressmaker or a Couturier. Each has specialised skills and will be able to offer a specific product. Designing and making your wedding gown is such an exciting part of the wedding planning that you want to look forward to each appointment. It is important that you feel comfortable and that you strike up a relationship. Discuss your budget up front and communicate openly and honestly through the whole process. With your budget in mind, they will be able to offer a fabric selection, styles, detail, beading, embroidery and lace work.
Purchasing a new or pre-loved dress
With most bridal wear stores, it’s best to make an appointment as you will then receive the personal
attention you deserve. You may be charged a fee and might be limited to the number of dresses you can try on. When shopping for your gown, you need to be level-headed and open-minded. Take someone with you whose opinion you respect as you might have something in mind but might not like it when trying it on and a second opinion is reassuring. Listen to the recommendations of the consultants as they usually have extensive experience and will be able to offer valuable advice. Your wedding gown should come alive when you put it on and make you feel glamorous and confident. Make sure it’s comfortable and allows you to move freely.
ALL DRESSED UP
Finding your Dream Wedding Gown
Hiring your gown
If you have no idea where to start or what design will suit you, then stores that hire dresses are an excellent place to begin. They may charge a fitting fee which will be deducted if you hire from them. This is an excellent opportunity to determine which styles are suitable and which to stay away from. Hiring companies regularly bring in new gowns so their range will vary. If you are a bargain hunter with time on your hands, ask the consultant to place you on their sale list. The gowns are only hired out a certain number of times to ensure that they maintain quality and the ranges have a limited rack life. Once a gown has been hired out its quota of times, it goes on sale. You can pick up fabulous bargains and your dream dress might just be on the sale rack! So whether you find the perfect fit off the peg or carefully crafted from a sketch, your dream dress is out there waiting for you to try it on. Enjoy this special time!

Grooms’ Wear
Your wedding is an opportunity to dress up and make a statement just as much as it is the brides. There is more choice than ever today, giving gorgeous grooms plenty of opportunities to let their personality shine through. Put your own stamp on the wedding style, whether you prefer a formal three-piece suit, which is becoming popular again, or a slim-fit lounge suit. You can go with the traditional dark colours or a more relaxed mix and match look, and even bring in checks and patterns.
be unique or he feels that a suit in his wardrobe is a worthwhile investment. Hiring is suggested for those with a limited budget and for the groomsmen, or for those who will only wear a suit on a few occasions in their lifetime.
You will never go wrong if you stick to the classic gentleman look and keep your accessories simple and stylish. An elegant wristwatch is more appropriate than a SmartWatch on your wedding day. Unless you are barefoot on the beach, the groom should always wear socks and keep the top button done up, at least until the end of the first dance. Whatever you choose, make sure you and your groomsmen co-ordinate harmoniously with the theme of the day and remember that what you wear will be captured indefinitely on film.
Be sure to hire from a reputable and professional menswear hire company. They will have a large selection of suits for hire and experienced assistants to give advice on traditional, classic and contemporary attire as well as accessories to keep your look cohesive. Remember that they have years of experience and will be familiar with trends as well as how a suit should fit, so take their advice if you want to look your best on the day. Hiring should be finalised 2–3 months before the wedding, especially if it’s a large wedding party. Keep style in mind, but it’s important that you and your groomsmen are comfortable with whatever you decide to wear on the day.
You can either purchase or hire your attire. The purchase of a suit is usually preferred if the groom wants to

Wedding Style
The style and theme of your wedding will be a common thread running from the invitations to the attire, cake, table settings and surrounds. The choices are endless and so it’s a good idea to browse through magazines, visit bridal shows and surf the internet to get a feel of what excites you and which look you would like to go for. There will be trends for colour schemes and design, but the most important thing is to remember your wedding is all about your individuality, so keep it personal to reflect who you are. Whether you want to go absurdly over the top, extraordinarily elegant or sophisticated and simple, get some professional advice to help tie it all together and keep realistic about your budget. If you are using a venue, take into account the existing décor and setting which will provide your canvas – colour, style, design, theme, gardens or surrounds – and work from there. Most venues are beautiful with their own character and charm that you can transform into your personal setting with as little or as much fuss as you choose! Many venues include cutlery, crockery,
basic linen and some even include candelabra and other décor elements, so find out what is available and included before you start planning your table décor. If you are having a marquee or garden wedding, you may need to hire everything in, including ablutions and kitchen facilities, so take these costs into consideration, as it usually works out more expensive than hiring a venue. The tables in the venue can be round, square, or rectangular. You can choose simple white or cream table cloths, often included, or hire in something linen to match your colour scheme or to add a touch of opulence. Wooden tables are popular and can be left bare or with a simple runner. Have fun with your décor! There is so much you can do with a little imagination, some professional advice and your own personal touch.

Flowers by Natural Nostalgia
Eco Trends for Floral Design & DĂŠcor Weddings and specifically floral design are key players in the worldwide movement to greener and more eco-friendly practices. Couples are becoming more aware and choosing elements that have a limited or a fairly gentle impact on the environment around us. The dilemma comes because cut flowers are undeniably one of the most gorgeous aspects of any wedding day and really transform your ceremony and reception spaces. So without getting rid of your beautiful scented flowers completely, here are some eco-friendly tips and techniques to ensure a minimal floral carbon footprint.
Potted Plants
Potted flowers such as locally grown orchids and potted plants are probably the most obvious solution to ecofriendly floral design. These can be given to guests and kept in the home or planted after your wedding event. However, this option is often restricted to your guest tables and has limited scope for design as it is difficult to incorporate potted florals with cut flowers without damaging their roots.
Stay Seasonal 84
Staying within the seasonal limitations of your geographic
area will greatly help keep your green floral footprint to a minimum. Avoid imported florals that have been flown by plane from around the world and where possible support local flower growers within your region.
Encourage Foraging
‘Foraging’ for foliage is a new and exciting concept. Floral designers are donning their rubber boots and gloves and assisting with neighbourhood cutting and trimming of seasonal foliage. This is especially useful during autumn and winter when naturally growing bushes and trees need to be cut back.
Go Foam-Free
Foam-free techniques are on the rise too. Floral designers are no longer using the green foam usually used to anchor your flowers and foliage in their container for design. Although they are great for abstract and whimsical design and keeping thirsty flowers well hydrated, floral foam also contains carcinogens and is not biodegradable. Your floral designer will be able to advise on ways to cut down or avoid using floral foam for your chosen design.
SETTING THE SCENE
Choose a Vegetable or Fruit
Including edible elements to your floral and dĂŠcor design is another new and exciting trend. Think organic pumpkins, artichokes, apples and grapefruit on your tables coupled with interesting floral design. Your decorative elements take on a dual function looking both beautiful and as a late-night snack for your guests.
Eco-Friendly Favours
Favours for guests are another easy way to be gentle on the environment. Avoid wasteful packing and choose guest favours that enrich their lives and encourage an environmentally conscious action. Flower, tree or herb seed gifts to plant or paid contributions on their behalf to conservation projects – are wonderful ways to give the gift that keeps on giving. Behind the Scenes with your Décor and Flower Specialist Whether your wedding is at a church, a hotel, venue, back garden or even a barn, there’s a whole lot that goes on behind the scenes to create an event that is uniquely yours. The initial meeting with your wedding planner, floral designer, or décor company could be 3–12 months before your wedding day. Your specialist will try to identify your dreams and match what you want with your budget and what is available, depending on the season. They will help you see the big picture and determine your overall wedding theme/style to align with your personalities. If they don’t stock something you want, they will make it or acquire it for you and a detailed list will be drawn up with every item, vase, votive, candle, underplate and runner or serviette that will be required.

Flowers are selected and ordered from the market or grower and collected or delivered on the Wednesday if the wedding is on Saturday. They will be prepared, cleaned (all those rose thorns and extra leaves get removed), fed and conditioned so that they will be at their best on your big day. Thursday is spent preparing petals, arranging flowers and creating your dream. Staff will meet to detail where everything needs to go once at the venue. On Friday, the van is loaded with every item needed to set up and work goes on into the evening to create the bouquets and corsages. Finishing touches will be added on Saturday and the flowers are sprayed and fed, ensuring everything looks gorgeous and ready for you (and to be captured on film). After days of preparation, your specialist will be as excited about your

wedding as you will be. Finally, the bouquet is delivered to the bridal suite and you are set to go. After the event, your coordinator/specialist will wrap up the bridal flowers if they are being kept or given away and the clean-up begins. Vases are washed, buckets, containers and tools are disinfected, stock checked, repaired and packed away – ready for the next event.

When the wedding is over, you may think the day will be etched into your memory forever, but memories fade and it will be difficult to verbalise just how brilliant everything was. This is where capturing and recording the event and all the details come in; creating the opportunity to be absorbed in the images of your special day and relive your treasured moments with friends, family and future generations. Photography and videography have become an art and when considering who to hire, remember that quality is more important than quantity. Choosing an experienced wedding photographer and videographer is essential if you don’t want to be disappointed. Not only will their professional cameras and lenses ensure you receive quality images or videos, but they will have the technical skill, experience and artistic ability to capture the mood and passion of the occasion. Their knowledge of light and their ability to adapt quickly to different situations and weather conditions will make a big difference to the end result. Be aware that one thing you can’t control is the weather. In some areas and certain times of the year, you can have three seasons in a day! You might be dreaming of a garden, forest or beach ceremony, but making sure there is an alternate undercover option before the day, will give you peace of mind. If there is the slightest chance of rain or a cold front, be prepared with umbrellas, gumboots and jackets. A skilled photographer will know how to create magic in any environment. In fact, some of the most stunning photos are taken in rain, wind or misty conditions. Most importantly, your guests will take their cue from you, so decide before the day that you will have fun, no matter what the weather.
Once you have your photos, how they are presented is also important – both from an aesthetic point of view and how they will be preserved. Your album is something to treasure for life so speak to your photographer about what options they offer. It’s a good idea to see a few of their current weddings and when comparing prices, take note of the quality of their albums, the number of pages, as well as cover options (genuine leather or acrylic) and if additional ‘parents’ albums’ are included in the quote.

Sounds Words of Wisdom Wait for everyone to finish dessert before you do your first dance and open the dance floor as everyone will leave the dance floor to eat dessert. – Steven, The Wedding DJ
Music is a crucial part of your wedding day. It evokes emotions, links you to your past and ties you to your future. Whatever you choose to play on your wedding day will be etched into your mind and whenever you hear the songs that were played on your special day, you will be transported back to your wedding. Your music will set the tone and will add to your personal touch. The music for your ceremony will be especially moving so try to choose music that means something to you, that has sentimental value and most importantly, that you both like. There are no rules regarding your choice. You can go traditional and classical or more contemporary. Many couples choose to have the accompaniment of musicians at the ceremony. Whether you choose the soothing sound of a string quartet, the trendy vibe of a saxophonist or the alluring voice of a soloist accompanied by a guitar, there is nothing quite like live music to accompany you down the aisle. A live musician will add something very special to your ceremony and will enhance the atmosphere.
The musical elements of a wedding
The prelude music is the music that will play as your guests are arriving and being seated for the ceremony. The selection will be 15–20 minutes with a few extra songs, just in case you run late. The music should all be selected from a similar mood – this is a happy occasion, a celebration and this is what you want to create. You can incorporate a blend of classical and contemporary numbers. Once you leave the ceremony to have your photos taken, your guests will probably move to an area for tea or cocktails before going into the reception.
SOUNDS
Your Wedding Music
If you have a musician for your ceremony, he/she will be able to play for your guests at this time. Discuss the repertoire with your musicians – they will be able to guide and advise you on what will create the best ambience. For the reception, you can choose a live band, a mobile disco, or both. The music will determine the mood of the reception and will determine whether your guests stay and party down till all hours of the morning or leave when they deem it politely acceptable to slip out! The entertainment is a key aspect in the success of your wedding, so spend time on the details and take advice from the musicians or DJs who have had experience. When choosing your DJ, make sure it is someone with a good reputation, professional equipment, and plenty of experience with weddings. Communication with them is essential and you should meet with them before your wedding. You will need to discuss your order of events, the songs you love as well as those you’d prefer to avoid and, of course, your first song, your walk-in song, and song for cutting the cake. You can give the DJ a list of songs to play, but remember that this will be a guideline only as the mood of the evening will only be determined during the event. If you have hired a professional, you can relax – just let him do his job on the night and he will ensure that the dance floor is full and your guests are having a great time.

Just the Two of Us Words of Wisdom Wherever you decide to go, let them know you are honeymooners – there are often extras thrown in to make your time special. – Nikki, The Marriage Meander
Your honeymoon should be a very special time together – an opportunity to relax and celebrate your marriage. As soon as you know where you are getting married, take time to plan your honeymoon. One of the biggest privileges is getting to start your married life off with one of the most wonderful holidays you’ll ever have. Not because it is expensive or elaborate, but because it’s just the two of you and a time dedicated to celebrating your new unity and future together. Traditionally it’s the groom’s job to arrange and he may want to surprise his bride, but couples often choose to plan this holiday together. Start by deciding what your budget is, how long you have and what you both like to do. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so tailor it to suit the two of you. When it comes to choosing where to go, everyone has a different idea of what their dream holiday entails. It’s often an opportunity to go all out on that overseas trip, but keep in mind that South Africa is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world. It has plenty to offer and is great value for money. There are many hidden gems and a memorable, unique and perfectly suited holiday lies right on your doorstep. Whether you’re an adventurer who loves to be active all day, or if you’re looking for fine dining and relaxing spas, our beautiful country has it all. Stay true to who you are as a couple, and do what you enjoy doing together.
Some things to consider •
•
Start planning early and ensure you book well in advance to secure the places you wish to visit. Pay deposits where possible as enquiries do not confirm your reservations and popular destinations fill up quickly, especially in peak seasons. If you can, stay at least two nights in your first location. Generally, the wedding ends very late and
adrenaline levels are high. As newlyweds, you won’t want to get up early to rush breakfast and ensure all is packed and ready to check out at 10 am! Rather, take time to unwind knowing that your wedding was a great success and now you can take a breather. •
Don’t be too concerned with what others say your honeymoon should or shouldn’t be. If you love hiking, take your backpacks; if you love playing music, take your guitar.
•
Consider chatting to a travel agent to assist in putting together a great package which suits your budget and preferences or lookup our select destinations listed in this book, which will ensure your honeymoon is unforgettable.
•
When planning, remember that the total expense is more than just travel and accommodation. Unless you book an all-inclusive package, you will need to budget for getting there and transport, meals, drinks, activities and tips.
•
If what you’d like most as a wedding gift is a great honeymoon, let your friends and family know and set up a honeymoon registry.
•
Remember that it is not simply about fitting as much into this holiday as possible, so ensure that you relax and take some time out together.

Finally, as you plan your lives together, remember that while there are many ways to get married, many ways to express your love, you only have one life to live. As you go off into the sunset, keep your heart in the right place and enjoy the journey.
