FROM THE EDITOR Putting this publication together is always a reminder of how much time and effort goes into planning a wedding and how easy it is to lose focus of the real reason for the celebration. You are about to dedicate and share the rest of your life with each other and so remember to spend time planning for your marriage and not just this one event. I have recently been deeply moved after hearing that a friend lost both her parents within a few days of each other. It was devastating news, but also encouraging that their story has been about a life time of love and commitment. They reminded us that “The most romantic story is not about Romeo and Juliet who died together, but grandpa and grandma who grew old together”. What a wonderful legacy and an example for all married couples. A great marriage doesn’t just happen – it takes time, compromise and commitment from both sides, but the effort is worth it. This is an exciting time of your lives, but through the years we have realised the need for reliable resources and The Marriage Meander Company is dedicated to providing these to help take some of the stress out of your planning. Our website will keep you updated with events and loads of inspiration, our free App ‘WEDDINGS KZN’ provides useful tools, tips, and contacts – all available at your fingertips, and if you are recently engaged, join us on a Marriage Meander Journey for the best wedding planning day ever.

Sean Baker

This book is designed to help with each stage of your wedding planning. It’s conveniently categorised, full of useful tips and ideas and contains all the reliable wedding contacts you will need. At the beginning of each section, you will find some of the “Best Marriage Advice” ever gathered over many years from couples who have had a successful marriage. I hope you will apply these gems to your marriage and build good habits from the start. We have a wonderful honeymoon to give away and some fabulous coupons at the back of the book for you to take advantage of. We are grateful to the venues and suppliers who have generously offered these special vouchers for Marriage Meander readers. The story of your lives will be about the relationships you have, the memories you share and the experiences you enjoy with someone special by your side. A new chapter is about to begin as you share it with that special person and we wish you all the best as you embark on this journey of love, life and growing old together.

Choose to love each other, even during the times when you might not like each other. Love is a choice, not a feeling.

Neville Nixon

Congratulations On Your Engagement!

Your wedding planning should and can be an enjoyable process. From years of experience, we have summarised the top 3 elements that will reduce the stress levels and help ensure you have a wonderful wedding. Not only will they help with your wedding planning, but if you both apply them to your life, you will have a contented marriage. Budget – Control Your Money A beautiful wedding is possible, no matter what your budget, but it’s important to have a spending strategy no matter what your taste and wallet. Although this is a topic few people like to discuss, it has to be done. Before you start planning, decide what type of wedding you would like and how much you are prepared to spend on this one event. Discuss with each other and ask your families who be contributing and how much. Set your expectations accordingly and use the handy Budget Tool in the Weddings KZN App to easily keep track of your spending.

• • • • •

Talk with your families about who will be paying for what. Learn to say NO! Be willing to compromise. Be open and honest. Avoid arguing over small things. It’s not worth jeopardising relationships with your fiancé or family members.

Select The Right Team. You will be employing a number of service providers to help bring your whole day together. Having the right team on board can take a lot of stress out of the planning, and ensure you have a wonderful day. All the service providers in this publication have experience, a good reputation and will offer a great service. Most will be as ardent about ensuring your wedding is a dream come true as you are.

Essential Ingredients For A Wonderful Wedding.

Communication Many issues can be resolved by simply talking to the people involved. You may take on a different personality when it comes to wedding planning, especially as it gets closer to the day – you are not unique! If you are respectful and considerate when tackling sensitive topics, you’ll all be happier and more likely to avoid conflict and resolve problems. How To Avoid Conflict: • Talk to each other often and discuss your expectations. Decide how much you can contribute between now and the wedding. Have a plan how to save and be realistic.

How To Find Your Service Providers: • • • •

• •

Consider your budget and stick within your margins. Decide what aspects are most important to you: food/ music /photos etc and allocate funds accordingly. Join a Marriage Meander Journey – if you are newly engaged, this is a must. See details on our website. Visit Bridal Fairs to meet vendors and see what they can offer. Make sure they have experience, references and that you connect with them. Visit reliable websites. www.marriagemeander.co.za Speak to friends and get referrals from reliable sources. Be aware that the suppliers your friend used may not be the best ones for you.

Most importantly, remember why you are getting married. It is about so much more than one day. During your engagement, make sure you spend time planning your future and not just your wedding day. If you put these three things into action and make them life habits, you will not only have a Wonderful Wedding but will be set for a Wonderful Marriage.

Enjoy the journey. Beyond Measure

TO PLAN OR NOT TO PLAN?

The experts say that if you don’t plan, you plan to fail, but how can this possibly relate to your wedding? Your wedding is a life-defining moment, the moment you declare your love for your partner publicly and commit yourself to sharing the rest of your lives together. You need to plan it, and if you’re not the planning type, get someone who is. A wedding planner can do as little, or as much, as you need them to, and although you pay for this service you can also save yourself a lot of money, grey hairs and stress by employing a professional to do it all. Wedding planning packages range from “on the day coordination”, to doing everything from assisting with finding your venue to sending out invitations, looking after the RSVP’s and even compiling your thank you letters after the wedding is over.

Courtesy of Spotted Owl Events gail@spottedowl.co.za

Photo: Saysha Baker

The advantages of using an experienced wedding planner are many. As experts in the industry, they’re well connected with suppliers, can source the most unlikely things and can recommend trusted vendors within the industry that they are confident in. This will give you the reassurance that they will perform on the day and do their job professionally. By tapping into this knowledge, your planner will ensure that you get the best deals and the best product for the right price. It can make the difference of having your tent erected one day earlier than normal, which will give the electricians, dance floor suppliers, and décor people a chance to set up earlier, leaving less chance of anything going wrong. It might mean saving a few thousand rands by knowing the right caterer to contact, and it certainly means that you should avoid any ‘hidden costs’ like suddenly discovering the week of your wedding that you are supposed to supply linen, chairs and glasses. The real question is, can you afford not to hire a wedding planner?

How much should I spend on my wedding? If you spend so much that you go into debt or are paying for your wedding long after the event, you have spent too much. It’s difficult to start planning until you know how much things are going to cost and a lot will depend on your guest numbers and the type of wedding you want. The good news is that there are many ways to save and avoid spending too much. Here are some useful guidelines to help work out what your wedding will cost and tips on how to keep to your budget. We obtained information from some of our recommended service providers who estimate that the average wedding in KZN in 2018 will cost R150,000 – R250,000 for100 guests, accounting for all the services listed below. Most couples spend 10-15% more than anticipated, so keep that in mind when determining your budget.

Beyond Measure

How much should I allocate?

Here is a very general guideline, but you will need to decide what is more important to each of you and if you want to emphasise one aspect and spend more in one area, you will obviously need to reduce expenses elsewhere: • • • • • • • •

45-50 % venue and catering 10-12 % photo/video 8-10 % décor/flowers 8-10 % bridal wear – dresses/suits 6-8 % entertainment/music 2-3 % stationery 2-3 % gifts 8-10 % wedding planner/miscellaneous.

It’s also advisable to allocate 5-8% for other expenses such as special transport arrangements or surprise overheads – they are likely to happen and it’s better to be prepared. Remember your honeymoon expenses too, which are not included here.

How to keep to your budget •

• Neville Nixon

Have a system to track your spending. The Marriage Meander has created a useful tool for you to do this. Download the free ‘Weddings KZN’ App on Apple or Android devices and start using the Budget Tool as soon as you start planning. Go through your budget together and keep talking about it as you book your venue and pay deposits for your service providers. Revisit it regularly and adjust as needed. Be realistic. Make wise decisions. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of your wedding which may lead to overspending. With each financial decision, ask yourself, “Is this the wise thing to do?” You won’t look back when you get to your wedding day with no debt. Using the average cost for a KZN wedding, decide if you can spend more, the same or less than that. Once you have a total budget figure, then apply the suggested percentages to see how much you can spend in each category. Now when you shop for the various aspects of your wedding you have an immediate idea if it will fit into your budget. Most of the time it will not easily fit, so now you will need to creatively reduce or eliminate something else, or get more budget. Remember that borrowing or debt should not be an option to consider. Remember that budget limitation is not negative if you find fun and creative ways around them. They can make your special day more memorable and the planning process much more enjoyable.

Make time together a priority. Consistently invest time into your marriage and schedule regular ‘date nights’.

Saysha Baker

Before you get carried away on the whirlwind of preparation that will consume you for the next few months, please do your homework and make an informed decision regarding your matrimonial regime. In South Africa, you have a choice of three matrimonial regimes that could apply to your marriage:

1. Marriage In Community Of Property

If you don’t sign an antenuptial contract (ANC) before your wedding, you will automatically be married in community of property. All your assets become part of a joint estate, i.e. you and your spouse share assets and liabilities equally. This affects your contractual capacity and your ability to conduct business or buy and sell immovable property. You and your spouse are jointly liable for all debts incurred during the marriage.

marriage. Alternatively, an application can be made to the High Court to change your marital system after the wedding, but the costs can be prohibitive.

I OD

Congratulations – You’re Getting Married!

In addition to being informed about the legal consequences of your marriage, it is also important to update your will, to take into account your changed circumstances. It would, in particular, be wise to get advice regarding: • estate planning, to suit your particular circumstances and needs which may include the creation of a trust during your lifetime, and • the effect of Captial Gains Tax, if any on you and your estate • the creation of a trust in terms of your will to provide for any minors who may inherit in terms of your will • the appointment of a guardian to your minor children. Courtesy of J Leslie Smith & Company Inc. 033-845 9700 cathys@jleslie.co.za

2. Marriage Out Of Community Of Property Exclusion Of Accrual

If you sign an ANC before your wedding, you and your spouse will have separate estates and be entitled to contract freely in respect of your respective assets and liabilities. You are not responsible for your spouse’s debts. On death or divorce, each party walks away with his or her own assets and liabilities.

3. Marriage Out Of Community Of Property Application Of Accrual

This option provides for a division of assets acquired during the marriage, on death or divorce. The growth of both estates during the marriage is measured and a calculation is applied to share the difference in growth equally between you and your spouse. You thus retain separate control of your respective estates during the marriage, but you share the growth in your estates equally on dissolution. If you wish to be married out of community of property, an ANC must be signed in front of a Notary Public before your

I DO He Asked You To Become His Wife … And You Said Yes!

The next important step is to make sure that you will be legally married after your wedding. When you start planning, it is so important to make sure that all legal aspects will be taken care of by a professional marriage officer. Sean Baker

Questions You Must Ask Your Proposed Marriage Officer:

• • • • • • Neville Nixon

Are they registered at SA Home Affairs and do they have a designation number? Are they prepared to travel to the venue of your choice? Are they able to create the ceremony of your choice? Will they complete the marriage register which you will sign on your wedding day with two witnesses? Will they issue you with a handwritten SA marriage certificate on your wedding day? Will they register your marriage personally at Home Affairs within three days of your wedding day?

A registered marriage officer should be able to advise you on home affairs regulations and documentation needed in order to register your marriage. Make sure about regulations for South African as well as Non-South African citizens getting married in South Africa at www.dha.gov.za

Together With The Marriage Officer, You Can Plan Your Ceremony: •

• Beyond Measure

15

It is important to create a joyful atmosphere for the ceremony because it is, after all, a day where your love will be celebrated. Light-hearted music will set the tone. It is always good to fill the quiet moments during the signing of the register with soothing background music. After the signing of the register, music helps to create the excitement of introducing the newly wed couple to family and friends with an exit song.

When signing the register, the bride will sign in her Maiden Name. Discuss with the bridal party beforehand where they will stand or sit during the ceremony and what their ‘duties’ will be before, during and after. Ask the maid of honor or anyone close to the bride to make sure that the dress is perfect during the ceremony for the photos. Ask the best man or anyone close to the couple seated in front to have bottled water ready – especially on a hot day. Use space wisely when deciding on flowers and décor for the ceremony area because there should be enough space for the marriage officer, the couple, bridal party and photographer and videographer. It is a good idea to not have any décor on the register table but use the bride’s bouquet as décor when signing the register. If you decide to have décor on the register table, please ensure there is more than enough space for the A3 register. If you want parents and/or bridal party to have special seats during the ceremony – make sure to reserve specific seats and inform the marriage officer about it. Discuss participation of all role players during the ceremony with the marriage officer – photographer, videographer, DJ or musician or any person who would do a reading etc. Make sure to discuss the order of service with the marriage officer so they can coordinate all details before, during and right after the ceremony.

Surround yourself with positive friends. Spend time with others who will strengthen your marriage. Sean Baker

When the initial excitement of your engagement mellows out a little, you’ll be faced with the important task of selecting the right venue. The scene of your wedding is as important as the people you invite so don’t be tempted to choose something that is just a backdrop for fabulous photos, rather than a functional place that will suit the size and style of your special day. We are spoilt for choice in KwaZulu Natal, and you’ll find everything from relaxed, country settings and rustic bush atmospheres to romantic forests, white beaches and elegant halls overlooking majestic mountains. Many of the venues offer exclusivity, which enables you to have a personal, private event, and many also have both a chapel and reception venue on the same property which will save time and simplify logistics. Your venue will be one of the largest expnses, so don’t compromise if something doesn’t feel right. Find a venue that speaks to you as a couple and fits your personalities as well as your specific requirements. Once you agree, look no further and move on to the rest of your planning. Whatever you choose, weather is always something you need to take into account. Consider the time of year and possible temperature extremes, the likelihood of wind and/ or rain and how the weather at your venue could match or contrast the desired theme and style of your wedding. No matter what the season or location, if you are planning to have your ceremony outdoors, you will need to have a ‘Plan B’ and many venues offer an alternative if rain threatens.

influence costs and you can usually expect to pay more in peak seasons while some venues offer specials during winter or for mid-week weddings. Evening weddings tend to cost more, aspecially when alcoholic drinks are being served. The style and setting is another factor that will impact the bottom line - a formal event in an upmarket venue will obviously be more expensive than a more casual wedding that might be held on your family farm or in a local park. Each aspect of your upscale event, whether a 4 course meal, an 8 man band, special lighting, decadent linens and elaborate flowers, will add significant cost, so be realistic about your expectations.

The venues on the following pages have been divided into 4 areas and a map of each area provided to help with your viewing and planning. You will need to be realistic and selective in deciding which venues to visit. Use the table at the end of this section to help find venues most suited to your needs and budget. You can also visit our website and download the ‘WEDDINGS KZN’ App for details, galleries and videos. You will find information for a wide range of wedding venues at your fingertips, but remember that there’s nothing like actually seeing the venue to get the right impression. Tala Valley With the feel of a distant wilderness, you can find venues that offer “an escape from the city life in the picturesque Tala Valley- situated just 40 minutes from Durban and 20 minutes from Pietermaritzburg. Due to its easy access, this area is a popular choice when considering convenience for guests travelling from both cities. The venues showcased here are as varied as the landscape, which ranges from cane fields and dramatic valleys to African bush and English country gardens. However, at each of them, you can enjoy warm hospitality, excellent cuisine, and some exceptional photo opportunities all without having to travel very far at all.

Choosing the right wedding venue may be more challenging than you expect. Doreen, the owner and expert wedding planner at Barker Manor Kloof, who has over 20 years of experience in the wedding industry, shares her top 5 tips to consider when comparing wedding venues.

1. Consider Your Budget

Establish your overall budget, and then break it down into categories, prioritising vendors of higher importance. Ensure you have clearly understood what the venue hire fee includes, as there are often hidden expenses.

2. Know Your Guest List

Once you have established a budget, you can estimate how many guests you can invite. This will save you a lot of heartache down the road, as you will only look at venues that can accommodate that size.

3. Take A Planner On Site Visits

Wedding planners are experts in event spacing, space planning, timing and items that you will need to transform the space into your dream vision. Before you embark on site visits, establish the type of ambiance, mood and look that

Barker Manor

37

you are after. A clear vision not only saves you valuable time, but it also enables you to choose a venue that best suits your theme.

4. Find Out What Is Included

Some venues offer a full service and others allow you to bring your own vendors on site. Be sure to cost out everything well in advance.

5. Location Is Key

Slow down and consider location and logistics. Is the venue easy for your guests to find, is there accommodation nearby, and is it logistically viable for your suppliers? Most importantly, choose a space that you as a couple feel comfortable and happy in! Article courtesy of Barker Manor doreen@barkergoup.co.za

Cathedral Peak by Beyond Measure

Drakensberg The Drakensburg is one of the most spectacular regions in South Africa. The looming panorama of peaks provides a truly spectacular backdrop for any celebration and the overshadowing scale of nature is breath-taking. There are a number of beautiful places to get married in the southern and central regions of the Drakensburg, each with its unique look and feel. The berg is lushly green from spring to the start of autumn which many people opt for but boasts wonderfully warm hues in winter as well. If you have many travelling guests, the area is conveniently situated between Gauteng and Durban and allows the feeling of really escaping whilst not being inconveniently out of reach.

Catering To Create Memories Food is an integral part of any wedding, whether it’s a sit-down dinner, cocktail party or more casual affair. To serve up some dishes that will leave your guests with great memories lingering for years to come, you’re going to need the help of a professional that will not only take care of the details of planning, cooking, presenting, and serving on the day but smooth over any snags and micro-manage stress. When it comes to catering, be aware that there are two types of wedding venues: those with in-house caterers, and those that allow for outside caterers to handle the food. If you have your heart set on a specific caterer, make sure you find a venue that will allow them in and check that your caterer is aware of what facilities are available for the food preparation at the venue. Various factors will dictate the types of foods served, such as the time of year, time of day and special diets. Ensure that the style of the menu will suit your friends and family’s particular taste and avoid serving foods that they are not accustomed to, just to be different. Your caterer will be able to advise you on these decisions and you would be wise to listen and take advantage of their experience. Be aware of the time of day that you are being married and plan so that your guests eat the appropriate food at the appropriate times. Remember that some of your guests might have traveled a long way to be with you and by the time they arrive at the venue, they may be ravenous. If you invite guests to be with you early in the afternoon but only plan to have food at sunset, we would recommend that you serve canapés, or you could cut and serve your wedding cake directly after your ceremony. The catering can be a significant cost at any wedding so please remember to keep within your financial plan as there is life after the wedding and you don’t want to start your marriage with a huge wedding debt.

Take The Cake There are several factors to consider when deciding on your wedding cake. The most important being the number of guests and your budget. A popular suggestion is to serve the cake with tea and coffee whilst the bridal party has photos taken. It can also be served as part of the dessert to avoid waste. If being served as tea, you will need to cater for the total number of guests and if there are fewer than 100, it may be more cost effective to choose a smaller cake and cupcakes. Many things might inspire your wedding cake design and we have seen various trends over the years. The traditional fruitcake gave way to sponge cakes, mousse cakes, and specialty flavours; then came the naked cake, the nearly-naked translucent cake, and the overloaded cake. The latest hand painted cakes and drip designs are now taking centre-stage. The latter, with a simple drizzle of flavour to dress up the tiers, adds a touch of quirkiness to a wedding cake and is popular for couples looking to add a distinguishing element to their wedding. Whatever you decide on, your cake should be as unique as you are as a couple, so go with your own preferences. Once you have your heart set on something, be sure to show your baker pictures to see whether they can recreate it. Some bakers specialize in fondant, while others prefer working with buttercream; some will make sugar flowers while others may be talented at creating custom motifs or sculptured figures. If you prefer to use fresh flowers, your baker will usually liaise with your florist. Your baker might be making several cakes for the same day. If your cake is made a few days in advance it shouldn’t influence the taste and may be necessary if you have an intricate design that will take many hours to create. The price will depend on the size, choice of flavours and fillings and how detailed the design is. We recommend that you get your wedding cake delivered to your reception, especially if it is multi-tiered and requires careful setting up. There should be a cake table ready at the venue, with a knife for cutting and remember that you will need a cake stand. Many bakers have stands available for hire and will be able to advise what will work best.

Answers To Your Stationery Questions.

An experienced wedding stationer will work with you to provide you with timeless, memorable, design-led stationery. To assist you through your planning phase, here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

Where Can I Get Ideas For My Stationery? There are plenty of informative blogs with stationery ideas on the internet. Pinterest and Instagram are fantastic, on-trend platforms which allow you to escape into a magical world of ideas and inspiration. Just be aware that too many ideas can impact on creativity and originality, so remember to take a breath every now and then.

When Is It A Good Time To Send Out Our Wedding Invitations?

Work on about 3 months before your wedding. If you are inviting guests from abroad it may be a good idea to send them out about 6 months before. Alternatively, you can send out a save the date which will let them know ahead of time, so travel arrangements can be made.

How Long Before The Wedding Should I Request The Rsvp And Do I Need Reply Cards?

Allow at least 4 weeks for the RSVP. We are often asked whether reply cards are necessary and the answer is no. Generally, this information can easily be incorporated into the invitation without the worry or extra cost of additional postage for the reply card envelopes.

56

JUST WRITE

How Many Invitations Do I Need?

Work on half your guest number plus a few extra. Additional invitations can always be purchased if required but having the extra 2 or 3 might be just the number you need.

Will My Guests Be Offended If We Include A Wishing Well Poem Or Gift Registry?

In some cultures, a money request or gift registry is not considered appropriate. My advice would be to ask your parents and carefully word the poem in such a way that it is taken as a suggestion rather than a rule. Something which simply states “Your presence is present enough, however, should you wish to purchase a gift, any gift from the heart would be greatly appreciated” would in most cases not be offensive.

Do I Need To Pay For My Stationery All At Once?

We recommend working through the invitation process first before finalising your day stationery requirements once your RSVPs come back, as there are often item changes and your quantities may need to be adjusted.

What are the benefits of working with a stationery designer?

Creating beautiful stationery takes time and resources which many couples don’t have when they are planning a wedding. By sitting down with a stationery designer, your vision can be translated into an invitation which truly reflects your unique style and which helps build the mood for your guests. They will guide you through each step and work closely with you to ensure the best possible outcome.

57

How Should I Word My Invitation Since We Are Paying For The Wedding Ourselves?

Even though you may be paying for the wedding yourself, it is still polite to acknowledge your parents or families on your invitation. If you don’t want to offend one or the other party, it is acceptable to simply write “Together with our Parents” or “Together with our Families”.

What Else Should I Be Aware Of When Budgeting For My Wedding Invitations? If you are on a tight budget, let your stationery supplier know. Avoid intricate laser cut invitations which are a lot more time-consuming to finish than more traditional formats. There are many ways to create stylish, sophisticated invitations that won’t break the bank and which still set the tone for the celebration to come. Drafting A Guest List Without Starting A War. One of the tasks you will face early on in your planning process is deciding who to invite to your celebration. Read on if your guest list is one of the following: • Leaving special people out • Including people you seldom see or may never see again • Unbalanced and including too many people from one side • Too long for the venue to accommodate • Too large to fit your budget

Here Are Some Guidelines To Help You Go About Drafting Your Guest List Peacefully:

invite everyone from your workplace, neighbours and siblings friends. With good long standing friends or family who live overseas, it is polite to invite them, so that they feel included but make it clear that you will not be offended if they decline. However, be prepared if they are delighted and accept the invitation!

The Seating Plan: Your Seating Plan is also likely to

create a challenge and just when you think you have everyone seated in the perfect position, a late RSVP will come in or a guest will fall in love and want to bring an unexpected partner. Download the ‘Weddings KZN’ App on Apple and Android devices for a useful RSVP, Guest List, and Seating Plan tool. You can also keep a record of the gifts you receive, as well as thank you notes sent – something you don’t want to forget.

Guests vs Venue: Before you start looking for your

wedding venue, you should have an idea of how many guests you’d like. This way you’ll know how the size of different venues fit in with your attendance requirements. At some stage, you may have to decide which is more important - your dream venue or the number of people on your guest list. This will help with your final decision. Keep in mind that your cost will go up with the number of guests.

Creating Your Guest List: Coming up with a final

list of names can be a difficult task, especially if you have to limit numbers. The bride and groom’s parents should be involved in drafting the guest list, especially if they are contributing financially. One suggestion is to divide the total number of possible guests into thirds for the bride and groom and both sets of parents to nominate guests respectively. In this way, you will have equal representation between the families and your friends. Realistically, you can’t invite all of your friends and family. If you’ve lost contact with people recently, or you can’t imagine having dinner with them in a year from now, don’t feel guilty about not inviting them. It’s also not practical to

Every bride wants to look stunning on her wedding day and once you’ve found your dream dress, you can start thinking about your makeup and hair to complete the picture. Even if you don’t usually wear makeup, a little on the day will ensure you look radiant and flawless.

ALL MADE UP

All Made Up

Don’t be tempted to experiment with new makeup on your wedding day. Booking a professional makeup artist will give you confidence, knowing that they will use the right products and ensure your makeup will last as long as you do. They will also know how to compliment your colouring to ensure you look good in the photos, but be true to yourself and stick to what you are comfortable with. Be aware that the camera and lights will tone down your makeup, so bridal makeup usually has a bit more colour to compensate. Make sure you have a trial between three and six weeks before your wedding. You’ll probably have an idea of what kind of makeup you’d like. Look for images of features that you love and take the photos to discuss with your makeup artist. Wear a white/cream shirt so you can see how the makeup will show up next to your wedding gown and avoid fluorescent lighting – natural lighting will be more honest. If you can correspond your trial with your final dress fitting, you will get the full picture and alleviate some of the stress you might feel on the day. To look and feel your best, allow about six months to get your body and skin in great condition, but be realistic about your goals. Rather than leaving it too late and resorting to a crash diet, focus on regular exercise, healthy eating and sufficient sleep and you will not only feel better and more energised, but will tone up, lose weight more naturally, and ensure your skin is looking its best for your big day.

Hair

Make an appointment with your hair stylist and have a trial to go through ideas. Take your headdress and a picture of your wedding gown so he or she can design a style according to the overall effect.

ALL DRESSED UP

I Need To Buy A Wedding Dress… Help Me! Buying your wedding dress can be an overwhelming choice to make, especially when your first port of call is to go online and expose yourself to the masses of designs possible. You see fitted dresses, flowy ones, low backs, sleeves and the list goes on. But when the rubber hits the road, you need to find what works for you, in your local town or city. You ask yourself: “Do they have what I want and how much am I going to have to spend?” Bridging the gap between falling in love with a trendy dress you found online and trying an actual wedding dress on that gives you that same ecstatic feeling, plus the tears and the overwhelming joy can be tricky. Don’t be disappointed when that trend doesn’t suit you, or the price tag is unachievable. Rather, be open-minded and continue the journey of finding that dream dress. I bet some of you beautiful brides reading this article, didn’t think you would end up marrying the man you are engaged to. Perhaps your ideal guy was skinnier, or had more hair, or drove a fancier car? All of these things seem rather superficial when you compare them to the man you love. No other man compares to him, flaws and all, he is your perfect match. Well, I challenge you to embrace this perspective with your wedding dress. There are so many out there, almost as many as the fish in the sea. So if that ‘perfect dress’ doesn’t do it, move on and try dating another style dress - who knows, maybe you will fall in love.

For The Groom When it comes to selecting the right attire for the groom and his groomsmen, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, guys should be given the freedom to decide on what they will be wearing on their wedding day. Weddings are so often about the bride and her big day, but the groom is just as important. It may be something that the two of you can discuss and come to an agreement about how formal or informal it should be, but let him experience the excitement of planning how you will look side by side.

Finally, take advantage of the many accessories that are available to create your unique look. You can pick up a colour or two or something unique from your theme and bring the whole entourage together with a touch of creativity. Don’t be afraid to inject your personality into your outfit, whether it’s a classy bow tie, funky socks or unique cuff links. The ‘rules’ have relaxed a lot, so just be yourself and have some fun.

Not all men are accustomed to wearing a suit or tuxedo. In fact, this may be the first time he has done so, and as he will be in the limelight, it’s important that he not only looks good but must feel comfortable that it’s the right fit and style and be able to move freely. Whether purchasing or hiring, a good tux or suit should reflect his personality as well as be appropriate for the style of your wedding. Daytime weddings are usually more casual, with lighter suits or mix and match outfits being acceptable. An evening wedding in a formal venue would call for darker suits or tuxedos. If the groomsmen are not all wearing the same colour and style, they should still be coordinated with the groom, who should be in harmony with the bride. The whole bridal party should also be dressed according to the weather, time of year and venue. It’s not practical or comfortable to wear tuxedos on the beach in summer! Another thing to take into consideration is body shape and size of the groom as well as the groomsmen. Find something that will suit all of them. You’ll find that the suit rental companies we recommend in this section are more than just a suit-hiring solution - they will help you find the look you have imagined, making it easy on the guys. The stores stock various sizes and will be able to assist you to find something that is most appropriate, ensuring a good fit. If in doubt, don’t be shy to ask for help to wear the suit well, especially if the guys are not used to being dressed formally.

So, you have chosen your venue but you have no idea what to do when it comes to décor or you have so many ideas you don’t know where to start. Here are 5 essential points to consider:

Color Scheme: It is no longer what is in fashion that

dictates what you need to do but more about what you love and what reflects your relationship. Turn to your home; what is the single most wonderful item you have that inspires you both? If it is a rusty old wooden Kist then work from there.

SETTING THE SCENE

Five Simple Points For Inspiring Décor

Flowers: If a limited budget is a factor then definitely work

with what is in season. Don’t look at overseas websites to inspire you as you will fall in love with a flower that only grows in Alaska and then you are doomed when you cannot have it.

Soft finishing’s: Lights, candles, action. Work with items that will create the ambiance you are after. At the end of the day, the décor will reflect the look and feel you are after but the guests will only remember what the wedding felt like. This will be created by the décor. Venue Focal Points: Consider what and where the focal

point will be in the venue and the chapel. Each of these spaces needs that one element that gives the focal area in the room. In the chapel, focus on the area where you will say “I do”. In the reception room, focus on the bridal table and/or another space that needs that something special.

‘Wow’ Factor: Each wedding needs that Wow factor.

Whether it is hanging flowers over the bridal table, loads of lights or chandeliers, or that amazing backdrop. Something needs to be a showstopper and you need to find the space and place for it. Courtesy of Midlands Style Events www.midlandsstyleevents.co.za

Your bridal bouquet is your final wedding accessory and your opportunity to create something unique that’s designed especially for you.

Beyond Measure

When selecting your bouquet, you will have a number of decisions to make about the type of flowers, colors and shape as well as how you want your bouquet to look in your wedding photos. All-white or ivory bouquets are striking, but without additional colours, they won’t stand out boldly against a white or ivory gown.

SETTING THE SCENE

Bridal Bouquet Essentials

Although bouquet fashions change over time, the design should depend on the style, colour and detail of your dress, and your own preferences. When you meet your florist for a consultation, take photos of your dress and explain what you would like. Your bouquet should compliment and not overpower your dress or hide the beautiful details. Your floral artist will be able to advise you on which flowers are in season on your wedding day and recommend which blooms will work well with the exact colour of your dress, as there are so many different shades of white. It will be useful to take fabric swatches of yours and the bridesmaids dress if you have them.

Neville Nixon

As you are likely to be holding your bouquet for a long time, make sure it is comfortable to hold with one hand without being awkward to carry or make you stand lopsided. You can personalise your bouquet by incorporating flowers that have a special meaning or, if you have a broach or heirloom passed down, you can attach it to the ribbon to finish off the handle. Enjoy your gorgeous bouquet and remember to ask your photographer to take some close up photos to help you remember it way beyond your wedding day.

Always answer the phone when your spouse is calling. Honour your time when together and keep your phone off if possible.

Your wedding day is a love story. It contains many chapters, starting with your preparations and venue details, through to the ceremony and “I Dos”, right up until the highs of the day are danced off among friends and family. So how do you select someone who is going to capture the special moments to last a lifetime? An experienced photographer will have a start to finish understanding of weddings; including timing, procedures and the little things one doesn’t always think of. They have an obligation to capture that special wedding.

The Most Important Things About A Photographer Can’t Be Seen In The Photos

Recognising a great photographer from an average one can be difficult. Their images might all be beautiful, but there are however indications that might assist you in the process of elimination. A photographers “style” is not just based on their images and how well they are captured. Rather it is in how they run their business, their reputation amongst other wedding service providers, their professionalism, and their ongoing communication. Your relationship with your photographer should be conducted in the same manner. From the onset, it is important that you and your photographer get along, as they will be alongside you throughout the day and prior to the day. Their guidance will form the backbone of planning and scheduling with other service providers.

style of photographer. Narrow your choices down to two and schedule appointments, it’s not always possible to do in person but Facetime and Skype solve that. When meeting your potential photographer you usually have an opportunity to touch and feel the final products, discuss the pros and cons of packages and ask questions that would be indications of good “style”. This is reassurance that you can trust them to tell your story through their passion for their work and their creative abilities, not to mention having these memories captured in a wedding album to be enjoyed time and time again in the company of friends and loved ones.

Secrets To Finding A Great Wedding Photographer

Not Just Pretty Pictures

Your photographer will be supplying you a valuable keepsake that should last a lifetime. It’s not just about the images they take and how they look, but rather their ability to capture the entire experience from the moment you first made contact and started this journey to paging through your albums and re-living the moments of your story. Consider your wedding photographer not just as a person that takes pretty pictures but someone that is an artist, a storyteller, a business person and a mentor that will guide you on your journey. Quantity VS Quality

Everyone has a perceived value of what something should be worth and what they are willing to pay for that product or service. Photographers place a value on their creative abilities as artists but more so on their experience, technical capabilities, advice and the service they offer. The value you place on your photographer will naturally attract you to that

Choosing Your Videographer Only with good video can you hear your vows again… listen to your groom’s speech and hear the laughter of your loved ones. It preserves moments to be relived and shared with those you love. When you are choosing a videographer, you are arranging to buy something that will last as long as your wedding ring so make sure you watch a fair amount of work so that you can choose a videographer who will produce the type of quality and style you love. The basic costs in a typical video package are made up of:

Number Of Camera Operators?

Some companies include two videographers in their package and others have it as an optional extra. If it’s at all possible, make sure you have two videographers capturing your special day. The risk of Uncle Bob stepping in front of the camera at the most important moment is a very real one.

How Many Hours Of Coverage Is Provided?

If budget allows, book a videographer for around 11 hours so that they can capture the preparation and truly tell the story of your whole day. If you’re not having your preparation filmed, around 8 hours will suffice. Ask if you can book an additional hour, should you need it.

What You Get As A Final Product.

The real artwork of wedding videography is the trailers, highlights and/or films. Gone are the days when wedding video is a tedious 7-hour account of your day. A quality cinematographer will not only use the latest filming techniques on your special day but will produce a beautiful love story that you will want to watch over and over again. Be sure to check what is included in the final product – a summary film, the speeches, ceremony and special dances? Your wedding day rushes past in a whirlwind of activity and emotion and a good video will bring back those special moments and have you reaching for the box of tissues. Sounds Best Marriage Advice

Be prepared to be strong for your partner when he/she is weak. A strong marriage rarely has two strong people at the same time.

Beyond Measure

The music played at your wedding will be an element of your celebration that has a significant impact on how your guests remember your special day in years to come. Whether you’re a music lover or not, here are 5 things you must do to keep your music memorable:

Outline Your Expectations

Before you start looking for options, it’s important to decide what you want on the day, as the options are limitless. Music can fit into every part of your program, so whether you’re looking for background music during your ceremony, live entertainment for your guests during your photo shoot, someone to turn your reception into an impelling party or all the above, let your expectations guide your search for your music providers.

Decide On Dj, Live Music Or Both

Having live musicians creates a magically personal atmosphere for the music of your big day but often limits you to a singular sound and genre of music, depending on how versatile the artists are. Having a DJ allows you to pick exactly what songs you’d like featured in the playlist and allows a much larger variety of music to be played throughout the course of the event. If your budget allows it, having both can bring the best of all aspects.

the same page with regards to the music that will be played on the day. Make sure you know what they’ll be wearing and that they have backup equipment on standby in case of a technical glitch. Be sure to give them an idea of exactly when they fit into the program and when setup and sound checks will be appropriate. Drafting a playlist of essential songs to be played allows them to ensure that they’re adequately prepared to play your selected songs, but give them the freedom to include music that they know will keep the dance floor going.

SOUNDS

How To Make Your Music Memorable.

Roll With Resistance

If the above steps are followed then hopefully there won’t be any glitches or hiccups on your wedding day, but sometimes life happens and there’s nothing that you can do about it. The important thing on the day is to make the most of any lemons thrown your way and to make sure you’re having the most amount of fun possible at any given moment. After all, it is your special day and if you enjoy every moment of the event (especially if there’s a hiccup or two), then you can be sure everyone around you will as well.

Screen And Sample

Once you begin looking for musicians or DJ’s, try and get a feel for what they’re like in action. Most bands and DJs will have recordings or videos of previous events that they’ve performed at. Experience is a very valuable aspect of what a DJ or artist can offer – find out how many other weddings they have performed at.

Communicate

It’s essential to communicate your desires and expectation to either the musicians or DJ to ensure that all parties are on

Just the Two of Us Best Marriage Advice

101

Know that a “perfect marriage is just two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other. You are in this commitment for life - divorce is never an option.

Any couple planning a wedding, regardless of size, style or situation, will know the importance of getting the little things right – be it the flowers, the cake or where to seat your deaf Uncle Ed…details matter. The same is true of planning arguably the most important holiday of your life – your honeymoon. Start as you mean to go on, as the old saying goes, and that means making sure that your first trip as a legally wed couple is as flawless and as memorable as possible. Here are some handy tips to help ensure smooth sailing, from Bon Voyage to Welcome Home!

Tip 1: Start Planning At Least 6 Months In Advance.

Planning your honeymoon is every bit as important as planning the wedding. Airlines, hotels, and operators allow bookings up to 10 months in advance, and many package deals allow you to put down a securing deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure. Take advantage of this and save.

Tip 4: Be Open-Minded

A honeymoon can be a week away at the beach or an exotic island, going on safari, hiking the Berg… or Inca Trail, or strolling along the Seine in Paris. There are thousands of amazing travel experiences to be had, and you don’t need to be limited by a ‘traditional’ view of what a honeymoon is. Anything is possible, and anywhere can be romantic when you see it with someone you love.

Tip 5: Consult A Professional

In as much as you would use a florist for the flowers and a seamstress for the dress or suits, it pays to use the services of a good travel consultant when planning your trip. They take all the guesswork out of the arrangements and will know exactly what you can get for your money. Their access to a wide range of operators and specials will help to secure the best deal going, whether local or abroad, and you will save both money and time. All you have to do is pack!

JUST THE TWO OF US

Top Tips For Your Honeymoon Planning

Courtesy of Travel Savvy carly@travelsavvy.co.za

Tip 2: Put A Budget In Place From The Beginning

Many couples make the mistake of thinking they will use the balance of what’s left over from their wedding budget. This is likely to ensure you are not going anywhere. Factor in the cost of your trip, whether a local getaway or an exotic destination, with the rest of the wedding expenses and start saving.

Tip 3: Do Your Research

It helps to have a fairly clear idea in mind as to what kind of experience you and your new spouse want to have, and how long you would like to be away. Take into account the weather in your chosen destination over your dates; the travel season (low, mid or high), which will affect the cost dramatically, and the style of travel you prefer. A good travel consultant will guide you here.
