Marsha Canright

Galveston, United States

I was born to a ranching family in north Texas and spent many Easter vacations in Galveston. I graduated from UT Austin in 1972 with a degree in Journalism and worked as a newspaper reporter and magazine writer for a decade. I moved to Galveston in 1977 working in public relations for Galveston College, Galveston Historical Foundation and UTMB. I met my husband, David, in Galveston, and our daughter, Lindsay, is a BOI. I moved to Austin in 1986 to manage media relations for Brackenridge Hospital; then worked as outreach director for the state WIC program and later as communications director for the Texas Department of Health. David and I returned to Galveston in 2004 when I became director of media relations for the university; I retired from UTMB in 2010. Now I write feature stories on island living for Coast Magazine, edit the University Area Association newsletter, and am working on a project to improve community relations between residents and Galveston Police (Protect with Respect). I work in partnership
