P R O J E C T S TAT E M E N T My pavilion is an exercise in layering at the material, spatial, and functional scales. It is designed to offer visitors the opportunity to see the exhibitions, performances, presentations, and the city of Venice from a new vantage point. My pavilion is also intended to contribute to the public good by prioritizing the design of accessible circulation routes in and around the pavilion. Architectural devices and spatial elements are layered together in my pavilion to provide Venetians and visitors alike an opportunity to experience the city and its culture in a new way.

AXON 1 ASSEMBLY: Weave together 1 vertical perimeter piece with 1 horizontal perimeter piece. Then, insert core piece. Repeat this step until block is formed.

WOVEN MESH In these first two joinery assignments I took aluminum window screen, cut it into strips, and then wove it together to create a modular block. The weaving of the mesh created areas with more layers and areas with less layers. This is the point that I began to notice the visual qualities of layered mesh.

FINAL JOINERY ASSIGNMENT

WOVEN MESH In the final joinery assignment I began to experiment with different ways of scaling up the mesh into a wall assembly. I took the modular mesh blocks that I had designed earlier and tied them into a frame made up of horizontal bars and vertical pencil rods. This is an adaptation of the glass block assembly method.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E A R S E N A L E As I began to unearth the rich history and significance of the arsenale site I noticed a more contemporary issue that the city of Venice is trying to tackle. Accessibility is an issue in Venice. To cross the city full of canals requires traversing many bridges along the way. To combat this, Venice has begun to install semi-permanent ramps along some of the bridges. Ponte de l’Arsenal is one of those bridges. This bridge is popular because it overlooks the grand canal, and it must be crossed en route to the biennale if you are walking. So I asked myself, could the ramp become the main form of tansportation across the bridge?

ARSENALE

SITE

R E L AT I N G T O T H E B I E N N A L E The Arsenale site is a key gateway to the two major biennale exhibition spaces. The north end of our site terminates at the Biennale’s Arsenale exhbition location, and the eas end of our site continues into the Giardini portion of the Biennale. Therefore, our site is a type of gateway to the Biennale.

LAND USE The site is surrounded by cafes, shops, the Naval Museum, and historic urban elements including Chiesa di San Biagio Vescovo and Ponte San Biasio della Cantene. All of these are colored in dark blue. The purple elements indicate lodging, the red elements indicate private residential, and the light blue buildings are institutional use.

MARSHALL STRAWN ARCH 5671 Studying the figure ground of Venice revealed that although the urban blocks are tighly confiigured and close together, there is still ample room for public sidewalks. Another notable feature is the presence of water all around the site.

MARSHALL STRAWN ARCH 5671 This is a close up view of one of the semi-permanent bridges installed on the arsenale site. It is neat and functional, but over 125’ long. If a ramp is going to take up this much waterfront in Venice, can we celebrate its use and elevate it to become the primary means of transportation across the canal?

SURROUNDED BY BRICK The Iturbide Studio by Mauricio Rocha and Gabriella Carillo is located in Mexico City, Mexico. It is a sturdy reinforced concrete structure wrapped inside and out by sun-dried clay tiles. The tiles are non-structural and they are supported by an internal delicate steel structure made up of horizontal bars and vertical rods.

MARSHALL STRAWN ARCH 5671 The Rialto Fish Market is a fairly contemporary building disguised in the neogothic style. Designed by artist Cesare Laurenti and constructed by architect Domenico Rupolo is 1907, the Rialto Fish market is made to blend into its surroundings. The column capitals of this building are designed to reflect the rich marine tradition of Venice, and the beams are designed to resemble waves.

PAV I L I O N P R O G R A M A layered experience that provides a new perspective on the city and Venetian culture.

MARSHALL STRAWN ARCH 5671

I see my pavilion as an exercise in layering. Semi-transparent materials are layered together to create a sense of alternating between open and enclosed. Assemblies are layered together to create hierarchy in which materials are exposed or hidden. Spaces are layered together so that they can be experienced in isolation or combined to create larger wholes that serve multiple purposes. Layering at the material, assembly, and spatial level is used to create a pavilion that serves the changing programs of Venice and the Biennale. The pavilion contains two primary exhibition spaces on one end, a service zone and entrance area on the other end, and then both are surrounded by exterior loggias and a circulation ramp. These devices are arranged to satisfy the programmatic elements of the pavilion and provide for a handicap accessible route across the canal. My pavilion is an exercise in layering at the material, spatial, and functional scales.

PAV I L I O N ST R U C T U R E The pavilion is held together by a welded tube steel frame painted with a corrosion-resistant black paint. In plan view you can see that the columns are place 24 feet apart on center to create four main bays. The secondary ramp structure is cantilevered off of the primary structure. Finally, the mesh assembly system is wrapped around the primary and secondary structure to create the visual experience of walking through layers of mesh. The structure is visible, but always through the viel of the mesh.

MARSHALL STRAWN ARCH 5671

PAV I LO I N D I AG R A M S

PAV I L I O N P R O G R A M M I N G The pavilion program is layered according to how public or private the space is. The private exhibition spaces are located on the interior of the building, and they are identified in dark blue. The exhibition spaces are then wrapped by the public circulation ramp descending from the bridge down to the sidewalk level. The ramp is identified by the magenta color. In salmon are the service spaces and gallery entrances. These are semi-public spaces covered by the mesh but unconditioned. The idea is that the more private the space, the more layers of mesh separate is from the outside world. So, the exhibition spaces are surrounded by multiple layers of mesh to create the darkest and most enclosed portion of the building.

PAV I L I O N D E TA I L S The pavilion is comprised of a primary welded steel structure, a secondary steel structure cantilevered off the primary structure, and a series of mesh wall assemblies wrapped around both. Essentially, the pavilion is a series of mesh layers wrapped around a steel frame. Sectionally, the mesh will be the first thing a person experiences, and then they will be able to see the structure behind the mesh veil. In elevation the pavilion will read as a mesh box with some areas that seem darker and some that seem lighter. Silhouettes will be visible through the layers of mesh. In plan the pavilion is a series of four 24’ bays with a circulation ramp wrapped around the outside. The axonometric view compiles the attributes of the section, elevation, and plan to provide a snapshot into the tectonic and spatial elements that comprise the pavilion experience.

E L E VAT I O N D E TA I L In elevation the pavilion will read as a mesh box with some areas that seem darker and some that seem lighter. Silhouettes will be visible through the layers of mesh. The areas of the elevation directly in front of the private exhibition spaces will read the darkest because there are more layers of mesh between the space and the surrounding city. However, the circulation ramp will read much lighter and more transparent. This is because there are only a few layers separating it from the rest of the city. This was done intentionally to connect the more public ramp with the rest of the city and to separate it from the more private exhibiton spaces.

The floor condition of the pavilion adds to the layered experience through the use of metal grated flooring. The floor structure is seen beneath the grated flooring. The exhibiton spaces are enclosed by glazing attached to the primary steel structure and nested within the mesh wall. The space becomes enclosed, but it does not hinder the experience of quality of the mesh.
