Munson develops a lifetime of friendships on the golf course By Mike Lamb mlamb@marshallindependent.com

Savannah Oaks Golf Course Superintendent Jason Grunnare, left, and course manager Jim Munson look over the course.
LYND — The drive down Highway 23 approaching Lynd reminds Jim Munson of what has been accomplished at Savannah Oaks Golf Course since it opened in 2006. “Sometimes you don’t even think about it, but every now and then you are driving down on 23 coming into work and you are looking at all those houses, ‘wow, in a way, I did that,’” he said while looking out the large clubhouse window that overlooks the course. Munson did play a part in the development of Savannah Oaks. His tenure goes back to when Ted Anderson developed a gravel pit into a nine-hole golf course and residential homes. “The man who built this course, I worked with him since ‘93. I was involved in the development all the way. The whole time,” Munson said. “I’ve been involved in every aspect since the first dirt was turned over. It was fun. I can remember what it looked like (before the golf course).” Munson explained that all the material had been extracted from the gravel pit and he said Anderson had to figure
out what to do with the property. “We talked about what’s the best thing to do with it,” he said. “We both came up. ‘what if we look into a golf course and residential. So we got designers, architects involved. And lo and behold here we are.” Munson manages the course and credits golf course superintendent Jason Grunnare for helping to keep the course in good playing condition. The two have been working together since 2005. “He’s the boss out there,” Munson said of Grunnare. Both men agree on what makes their jobs enjoyable. “The course and the people,” Grunnare said. “There’s nothing like it around and the people are nice. The homeowners to the members, the people are nice and respect what you do.” Munson said he “just plain enjoys it.” “I have a lot of friends. Even if they are people that never played here before. I just like to meet them. Talk about their problems, what they did or what they are doing. That’s it in a nutshell,” he said. Munson PAGE 6

9 ways to improve your golf game
Munson, who lives in Tracy, has also developed a lot of friendships at the Tracy Country Club. His expertise as manager of Savannah Oaks has helped in his capacity as president of the Tracy Country Club board of directors. “When they elected me president there, there was a lot of chitter chatter ‘how about conflict of interest.’ I said you don’t have to worry about that. We are working together. We got to work together to keep us both afloat.” Munson said golf courses in the region are struggling to keep financially fit. “We are all seeing the same numbers. We are seeing membership get older and not enough people coming up. The younger people are not coming up behind them.. It’s always been a tough business,” he said. “I have found that with fami-
(METRO) — Warmer weather sends scores of golfers to their favorite courses each and every day. Golf is a challenging pastime, but a few pointers can help golfers hone their short games, long games and everything in between. • Choose the right clubs. There is more to selecting clubs than pulling any old iron out of your golf bag and whacking away. Wind, hazards and obstructions in landing areas should influence your decision of which club to use. Novice golfers may want to rely on their caddies to make club recommendations, and as they become more confident in their abilities they can start to make their own choices. • Anchor your feet. Anchor your foot behind the ball to drive the ball further. Right-handed players will keep the right foot anchored, and lefties will do the opposite. Do not lift your foot prematurely; otherwise, you can lose power and distance. • Identify your weaknesses. As with any hobby, identifying those areas that need the most work can help you become a better golfer. Keep
lies, all the things their children are involved in, it just takes away from their discretionary income or their free time.. But my demographics here are pretty good as far as all the age groups that I have. It’s better in Tracy. But we are all in the same boat.” Munson said he does think about retirement. But before that happens, he would like to see the course expand to 18 holes. “It’s going to be tough. The housing sales have dropped out here. That happened in ‘08, ‘09. Would I like to see it happen before I get out of here? Oh, absolutely. But will it? I really don’t know. I don’t expect it,” he said. “I think I will be around for awhile. I’m 64, so I’m thinking ‘well, how far do I want to go?’ Right now, Munson said the answer is he’s not ready yet.

hind the ball. Then set the clubface behind the golf ball and align it with the target before you enter your stance. • Use your torso for power. The torso is essential to a solid swing. Practice rotating from your core to control your backswing and then maintain the same spine angle and posture on the downswing. • Use the wind. Not every golf game will be played in perfect weather. A good player knows how to make adjustments for the wind depending on the shot. Use the wind to your advantage when you can, and adjust your swing when hitting into the wind. • Become a better chipper. Many players put so much emphasis on their backswings and putt shots that they fail to devote any practice to chips. All shots are important for golfers trying to shed strokes off of their scores. • Keep fit. Maintaining or improving your physical strength and overall health can help your golf game. Exercise and eat right, and you will have more endurance on the links.

(METRO) — Golf is a game of sport and skill that can be played at any age. Millions of people in North America participate in golf as a recreational endeavor or a professional pursuit. As of the spring 2016, 25.13 million people in the United States played golf over the previous 12 months, according to Statistica. People may immediately think Canada’s sports-based loyalty favors hockey. However, on the recreational side, golf is king in the country. Canada has the fourth most golf courses of any country in the world, says the National Golf Foundation. Plus, one out of every 10 Canadians play golf — a participation rate that is more than double that of the United States. Storied golf history Although golf can be traced back to the Netherlands during the Middle Ages, many people concur that the modern game of golf — played over 18 holes — is a Scottish invention. The popularity of the sport began to spread throughout the world from Great Britain. The first permanent golf club in North America was founded in 1873 and was named Canada’s Royal Montreal Club. The first 18-hole course in the United States was The Chicago Golf Club. Golf lingo Understanding the terminology is key to becoming a full-fledged golf fanatic. While golf lingo is extensive, here is a sampling of some of
the more popular terms to get novices started, courtesy of the PGA. Approach: A shot hit towards the green. Attack: The relative angle at which the clubhead approaches the ball at impact. Backswing: The motion that involves the club and every element of the body in taking the club away from the ball. Birdie: A score of one under par on a hole. Bogey: A score of one over par on a hole. Bunker: A hallow comprised of sand or grass that serves as an obstacle. Carry: The distance a ball will fly in the air. Chip: A short approach with a low trajectory. Chunk: A poor shot caused by hitting the turf. Divot: The turf displaced when the club strikes the ball. Downswing: The swing forward from the top of the backswing. Eagle: A score of two under par on a hole. Golf range: A facility where people can practice golf swings. Grip: The positioning of hands on the club. Hole: A round receptacle on the green that the ball is aimed into. Lie: As it relates to the golf ball, the position when it has come to rest. Links: Specific term for a course built on linksland, which is land reclaimed from the ocean. Mulligan: An extra shot taken on a poor first shot. Par: The score an accomplished player is expected to make on a hole.

How to help kids get into golf
Metro photo
(METRO) — Golf is a game of skill that can take years, if not decades, to master. Many golfers find their time on the golf course both rewarding and relaxing, even on those days when the fairways seem impossible to find. Though many players never swing a golf club until they reach adulthood, it’s never too early to hit the links. Some of the world’s most accomplished golfers, including four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, began playing as toddlers, and many feel that getting an early start can lead to a more successful game down the road. Getting kids into golf is a great way for parents to bond with their children while enjoying the great outdoors. Golf can also be used to teach kids humility, sportsmanship and the importance of hard work. Thanks to the often frustrating nature of golf, parents may find it somewhat challenging to instill a love of the game in their youngsters. But there are ways to introduce kids to this wonderful game that kids
might just play for the rest of their lives. • Focus on having fun. Few, if any, golfers at your local golf course on a given weekend could say with certainty that golf has never frustrated them. The challenge of golf may be its most appealing characteristic to older players, but young kids can be easily overwhelmed by the challenges golf presents. By focusing on having fun instead of perfecting techniques, parents can get kids to look forward to their time on the links. The more fun kids have, the more likely they will be to embrace the game and its many challenges. Don’t put pressure on youngsters as they develop their games, but encourage them through their struggles and reassure them that you faced the same obstacles when you started playing. • Hire an instructor with experience teaching children. Instructors with experience teaching children will understand the basics of the game and how Kids PAGE 18

Kids FROM PAGE 1A learning those basics provides a great foundation for future enjoyment and success on the course. Instructors who have taught kids in the past also know that teaching youngsters the finer points of golf requires patience and encouragement. Ask a fellow parent or an employee at the club where you play to recommend an instructor for your child. And take advantage of any kids’ courses your club offers. • Purchase the correct equipment. Even the best golfers are bound to struggle when using the wrong equipment. While it might be unwise to invest in especially expensive

equipment for youngsters likely to grow out of it in a few months’ time, deals can be found on used kids’ equipment. Used kids’ equipment is typically subjected to less wear and tear than used equipment for adults, as kids tend to play less often and fewer holes than adults when they do play. But make sure to find correctly sized equipment that kids feel comfortable using. • Play some holes. Instructors may teach kids the differences between the types of clubs and how to swing and putt. But golf is most fun when players are out on the links going from hole to hole.
