@HerdMSoccer Media Guide A LOOK BACK at 2012

With the construction of Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex, Marshall was forced to play all but one of its 2012 home matches away from Huntington ... With the exception of the October 3 match vs. Asbury (which was played in Huntington), the 2012 nonconference games were played at the Trace Fork Soccer Complex in Charleston, W.Va., while the conference matches were held at Hurricane High School’s soccer field ... After having started the 2012 season 10-1-1, the Herd struggled down the stretch as they finished 1-4 in the last five matches of the season ... “When you look back, this (2012) season boiled down to less than two minutes: losing to UAB in the last minute of play, to SMU in sudden death overtime, and to UCF with three seconds left,” said Marshall head coach Bob Gray on Nov. 3, 2012 after the season finale. “It’s tough to go undefeated in non-conference play, set a new shutout record, and still not make the conference tournament.” ... Marshall’s senior class played a huge part in the program’s recent success, accounting for 38 wins, 33 goals, and 22 shutouts in a four-year span. In 2012, they helped lead the team to a new single-season shutout record and its third-highest winning percentage in program history ... Senior GK Daniel Withrow cleaned up in the postseason honors, capped by being named Conference USA Co-Player of the Year ... On Jan. 22, 2013, Withrow was selected in the second round (66th overall selection) of the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft by the Columbus Crew.

2013 Season Preview • • • • • • • • • •

Notes

The Herdsmen will take on nine teams in 2013 that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament, beginning with an exhibition at Akron (Aug. 20). In 2012 six of those nine teams either finished or received votes in the final NCAA top 25, three in the top 10. One of the opponents, Maryland (Oct. 15), were national semifinalists. Conference USA will look different in 2013 with the addition of New Mexico, UNC Charlotte, Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic & the departure of Memphis, SMU and UCF. Marshall will open its new facility for men’s & women’s soccer, Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex, on Aug. 23 with the men taking on a team made up of Marshall Alumni at 5 PM. Aug. 23 will serve as a grand opening for the facility as the Marshall women’s team will take on Campbell at the conclusion of the men’s alumni game. 94 men’s soccer alumni committed to attending the festivities as of Aug. 13. The 2013 squad is loaded with young talent as 20 of the 28 roster spots are filled by freshmen and sophomores with 15 of those slots being taken up by freshmen. Just like in years past, the squad has a dose of international flavor as six members of the 2013 team are from outside of the United States. Countries include: Jamaica, Canada, England, Chile and New Zealand. Not lacking on hometown talent, the Herd have five natives of the state of West Virginia, all of which are underclassmen heading into the season. After having made three consecutive postseason appearances in 2007, 2008 and 2009, the Herd have made the postseason on just one occassion in the past four seasons (2011). The Thundering Herd will look to go for its fifth straight season without a losing record as the Herd failed to reach a record of .500 or above during the 2008 capaign.

“Marshall also had a big offseason, as the Herd welcome in its new playing facility this fall. Marshall started last season with bang – racing out to a 10-1-1 record before faltering at the end to finish with an 11-5-1 mark. The Herd needs to replace leading scorer Tom Jackson as well as goalkeeper Daniel Withrow this season.” -J.R. Eskilson, “Conference USA men’s soccer Season Preview” - TopDrawerSoccer.com

2013 C-USA Preseason Honors On Aug. 7, C-USA released its preseason poll & honors that were voted on by the league’s ten coaches. Five of the 10 first place votes went to squads that Preseason Coaches Poll are entering year one in C-USA (New Mexico with four and Charlotte with one). @HerdMSoccer Media Guide

Welcome to Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex “We wanted to have one of the nicest soccer facilities in the country and in Conference USA, and we’re going to have that. It’s going to mean a lot to our soccer programs, and I think we’ll have more interest in Herd soccer than ever before.” -Mike Hamrick, Marshall Athletic Director About Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex The main entrance plaza, at the corner of Fifth and 26th, is done in sections like that of a soccer ball. A sign similar to the one at the corner of Fifth and 20th - next to the Marshall Recreation Center - will grace the plaza along with plantings. The site was the home of the Veterans Memorial Field House for more than six decades. The Herd’s aged former basketball home had fallen into disrepair - but the memorial panel to veterans that graced the side of the old arena was preserved and hangs at the main entrance of the soccer stadium off Fifth Avenue. The main entrance to the 1,006-seat stadium includes a brick plaza. A glass-door entrance from the field into the equipment room, the men’s and women’s teams have their own locker rooms, training rooms and lounges. There also are visiting team and officials’ locker rooms. The Herd head coaches and assistant coaches also will have their own offices, in addition to space for graduate assistants and a conference room. Atop the stadium sits a large pressbox area that will accommodate TV, radio and print outlets. Throughout the soccer building, walls are highlighted by sections of Kelly green, and rows of textured block bring definition to the walls. The project, in excess of $8 million, is one of the products of the ongoing Vision Campaign for Marshall University Athletics.

HEAD COACH BOB GRAY Years: 19 Record: 422-228-48 Alma Mater: Alderson-Broaddus Bob Gray, the sixth head coach in the program's 38-year history, enters his 19th season at the helm of Marshall men's soccer. With 28 winning seasons in 35 years of collegiate coaching and a career record of 422-228-48, Gray is continuing his legacy as one of the NCAA's winningest coaches. In 18 seasons with the Herd, Gray has amassed a record of 167-152-23, while notching his 400th career win during the 2010 season. During the 2012 season, the Herd failed to reach the postseason in a season that was played in unfamiliar territory as Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex was under construction, which forced the squad to play its first year away from Sam Hood Field in 14 seasons. After a stellar 10-1-1 start to 2012, Marshall lost four of its last five games to close out the season as offensive issues surfaced to close out the year with an 11-5-1 mark. With nine returning starters and a host of young talent, the 2010 Herd were expected to compete for a championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. However, the team fell short of the C-USA postseason with a final game loss to UAB. Gray and the Herd still managed to put together a solid 9-5-4 record, though, capping off the team’s first back-to-back winning seasons since the 2000-2001 campaigns. 2009 was arguably Gray's most successful season with the Herd, as he turned around a 3-14-1 team from '08 into a 10-7-2 contender in `09. With a 6-2 Conference USA mark that year, Marshall advanced all the way to the conference championship game and turned heads in the college soccer world. For his efforts, Gray was named the C-USA Coach of the Year for 2009. In 2007, the Herd's third in C-USA, Gray led Marshall to its second appearance in the conference tournament, where the team claimed an opening-round, 3-1 upset win over Kentucky before succumbing to FIU in the semifinals. During the 2005 campaign, Gray led the Herd in its inaugural season in Conference USA to a 4-3-2 conference mark. His efforts and success were noted as he was honored with Conference USA Coach of the Year honors. In 2004, Gray became the first Marshall men's soccer coach to eclipse the 100-win plateau in the Herd's 1-0 victory over Alabama A&M. In 2000, Gray passed Jack DeFazio for first place on the all-time victory list in Marshall men's soccer history. Gray won his 300th career game in 1998 when the Herd defeated Eastern Michigan, 3-1, becoming one of only 10 active Division I coaches to achieve this milestone. Prior to Marshall, Gray had an extremely successful stint at the University of Mobile, where he compiled a 47-12-4 record in three seasons.. Gray's time at Mobile culminated in 1994 when he led the Rams to a 21-4 record and reached the NAIA National Championship game. Before Mobile, Gray spent 14 years as head coach of Alderson-Broaddus College - his alma-mater - from 1978-91. Gray guided the Battlers to five appearances in the NAIA National Tournament, and in those five appearances, saw his teams finish second (1981 and 1988) and third (1983 and 1991) twice. On his way to 255 wins, Gray became one of the winningest coaches in NAIA history, and in 1998 was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Gray was a five-time Area Coach of the Year and was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 1991. He was also named West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times and captured seven league titles. Gray has become very involved in the local and national soccer communities. He is the director of the local West Virginia Rowdies youth club teams that have won multiple state championships, and he is also the chairman of the player selection committee for the MLS Combine. In 2004, he was appointed to the USSF National Instructional Staff. Gray's love of the game shows in his coaching philosophy, as he stresses both hard work, and the importance of having fun. So far that combination has been successful, and he will be hoping for more of the same in 2013. Gray and his wife Kay have two children; Nicole and Matthew.
