KEVIN LONG HEAD COACH EIGHTH SEASON George Mason, ‘93
Kevin Long enters his eighth season as head coach of the Thundering Herd, and the 17th season of his career. In seven seasons at Marshall, Long has led the women to a 52-63-19 record. In the last two seasons, he took the Herd to back-to-back appearances in the C-USA Tournament for the first time in program history. In 2013, with Long at the helm, Marshall earned its first-ever postseason win. With the addition of Long’s first recruiting class in 2009, the Herd posted a 12-7 record, its highest win total in program history, as well as going 5-6 in Conference-USA, its best production since joining the conference in 2002 and falling one game short of its firstever C-USA tournament appearance. Long accepted the head position at Marshall following one year as the interim head coach during the 2008 season. Prior to MU, Long worked at Rider University, where he served as head coach from 2003-2008. Long left Rider as the Broncs’ winningest coach with a 37-48-12 record in five years. The Springfield, Va., native was hired as Rider’s third coach in the women’s soccer program history in March 2003. Long led the Broncs to record-setting victories in his first two seasons, 2003 (11) and 2004 (12). After a 12-win season in 2004, the Broncs qualified for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) playoffs. In that same season, he led Rider to the MAAC Championship Game, and in 2005, earned a firstround victory in the MAAC Championship tournament. The 2003 season was the first winning season for Rider, a season in which the Broncs won two tournaments. Rider was ranked 27th in the nation among scoring offenses, with a win-loss record ranking among the top-third in the nation. Long’s 2003 Broncs led the MAAC in shots, points, goals, goals per game and assists. Three of his players were honored for high academics. In 2004, six of his players earned All-MAAC honors, and three others were on the MAAC All-Academic team. Off the field, Long improved the Rider team’s grade point average nearly half a grade higher than in his entry year to a 3.2. Prior to Rider, he served as the assistant women’s soccer coach at North Carolina State University from 2001-2003. While with NC State, Long taught physical education and he participated in the 2002 NCAA College Cup YES Clinic. From 1997-2001, Long coached women’s soccer at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College while also serving as the director of sports information. While coaching at the school, Long had the only two winning seasons in program history. Also at Randolph-Macon, Long was part of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee where he was the chair of the South Region. From 1998-2001, Long served as evaluator and education reference for over 30 coaches as director of travel coaches for the Lynchburg United Soccer Club. Long will continue as an Olympic Development Program (ODP) Region I Senior

ASSISTANT COACH
ASSISTANT COACH
THIRD SEASON Marshall ‘11
FIRST SEASON NOrth Alabama ‘13
After serving as a volunteer assistant for the Thundering Herd in fall 2013, Erika Duncan was named assistant coach for Marshall women’s soccer in March 2014.
Lauren Middleton enters her first season as assistant coach of the Marshall women’s soccer program.
“We are thrilled to have Erika joining us on a full-time basis,” coach Kevin Long said of her hiring. “Over the last year, we saw first-hand what her impact here would look like and now, being able to devote more time and energy to the Marshall program means we can expect even more from her.”
“We had an awesome list of candidates for the position and I am very pleased with what Lauren brings to our program,” coach Kevin Long said. “She brings a knowledge and understanding of the goalkeeping position that we were searching for, but more than that, she has demonstrated the work ethic and initiative associated with success at every stop along her path. She is a welcome addition to our program.”
Duncan returned to the Marshall women’s soccer program for the fall 2013 season as one of the most decorated players in Herd history. A four-year letterwinner at forward from 2007-2010, she holds the Marshall record for most career goals (23) and most career game winning goals (eight). In 2009, she tied for most consecutive matches with a goal (four). She boasts the second-most career shots with 140; thirdmost career points with 54 and twice tied for third-most goals in a season with nine (2008, 2009). “I am very excited to begin my collegiate coaching career at my alma mater,” Duncan said. “Marshall has become my home away from home and I can’t express enough how grateful I am to have been given this opportunity. I also can’t thank Kevin enough for allowing me to continue being a part of such a great team and program that will continue to grow in its success.” Long spoke of Duncan’s immeasurable contribution to the Herd during her time as volunteer assistant. “Erika bleeds Green and White – we can’t develop a passion for the Herd that Erika intrinsically carries with her,” Long said. “She will use that pride in making sure Marshall women’s soccer is always striving to be the very best we can be.” Other accolades Duncan collected during her career include second team All-C-USA in (2009, 2010), C-USA Player of the Week (2008, 2010), second team NSCAA AllRegion (2010), honorable mention NSCAA Scholar All-Region (2009), second team Academic All-C-USA (2009) and C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (2007-10). Prior to Marshall, Duncan played for the Scottish women’s national team at the U17 and U19 levels and was a squad player for the full national team. After she graduated with a bachelor’s in exercise science in 2011, Duncan decided to continue her career at Marshall by pursuing a master’s degree in sport administration, graduating in May 2013. During graduate school she worked as a personal trainer at the Marshall Campus Recreation Center. Duncan has been working with the West Virginia Soccer Club girl’s academy since 2011. She is the U10 head coach and assists the U14 girls team. She holds a U.S. Soccer D Coaching License.
A Birmingham, Ala., native, Middleton spent the 2014 season as an assistant coach at Tiffin (Ohio). During her time with the Dragons, she assisted in all phases of the program while working specifically with the goalkeepers. She coached freshman keeper Sam Ortenzi en route to a record-setting season of 145 saves, shattering a program record held since 1991. Ortenzi earned a 2014 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention under Middleton’s tutelage. Freshman defender Melissa Bosco also was named to the 2014 NCAA D-II/NAII and NCCAA Women’s All-Ohio Teams under Middleton. Prior to her time at Tiffin, Middleton spent the 2013 season as a graduate assistant at Wheeling Jesuit, where she helped land two players to the 2013 All-Mountain East Conference first team as well as All-East Region third team. Middleton was a member of the University of North Alabama women’s soccer team, a NCAA Division II institution, from 2010-12. In 2011, she was part of the first team in school history to win the Gulf South Conference Championship. The Lions also advanced to the GSC tournament championship and NCAA Tournament for three consecutive years. Aside from soccer, Middleton received the GSC Student-Athlete Honor Roll award from 2010-13. Middleton has been involved in numerous collegiate soccer camps. She also served as the goalkeeper coach with the Florence High School boys varsity team, helping them advance to the state playoffs for the first time in school history in 2013. Middleton is a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) as well as the Alabama Youth Soccer Association (AYSA) with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) as the goalkeeper coach from 2012-13. Middleton holds numerous coaching licenses such as the NSCAA Goalkeeper Level I, II, and III Diploma, NSCAA National Diploma and USSF National “D” and “E” licenses. She graduated from the University of North Alabama in May 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and is currently pursuing a master’s in business administration with a concentration in sports management at Tiffin University.
“One of the first things that stands out about Erika is her love for the game and her pursuit of her soccer education,” Long said. “I am confident that we are on the front end of a very successful coach’s career.”

HOOPS FAMILY FIELD AT VETERANS MEMORIAL SOCCER COMPLEX From the soccer-ball design plaza at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 26th Street to the Kelly green aluminum bleacher-backs and seat rows, to the big green landscape of the turf, the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex is special. The project, in excess of $8 million, is one of the products of the ongoing Vision Campaign for MU Athletics. The stadium opened Aug. 23, 2013. The site was the home of the Veterans Memorial Field House for more than six decades. The Herd’s aged former basketball home had fallen into disrepair - but the memorial panel to veterans that graced the side of the old arena was preserved and hangs at the main entrance of the soccer stadium off Fifth Avenue. Marshall also provided $100,000 to the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District for a half-acre children’s playground dedicated to veterans. The public park stands adjacent to the complex, off Fourth Avenue. The main entrance to the 1,006-seat stadium includes a brick plaza, where Herd soccer alumni may purchase bricks, with their names inscribed, for a minimum contribution of $1,000. Fans will have close access, under the stands, to restroom and concessions facilities, too.
The Herd soccer players will find that special care has been taken to make the Veterans Complex a home away from home for them. From a glass-door entrance from the field into an equipment room, the men’s and women’s teams have their own locker rooms, training rooms and lounges. There also are visiting team and officials’ locker rooms. The Herd head coaches and assistant coaches also have a separate entrance for their own offices, with additional space for graduate assistants to work. A conference room is adjacent to those offices. Atop the stadium sits a large pressbox area that will accommodate TV, radio and print outlets. Throughout the soccer building, walls are highlighted by sections of Kelly green, and rows of textured block bring a definition to the walls. The main entrance plaza, at the corner of Fifth and 26th, is done is sections like that of a soccer ball. A sign similar to the one at the corner of Fifth and 20th - next to the Marshall Recreation Center - will grace the plaza along with plantings. The new stadium also helps both Herd teams add to the home game schedules in future seasons. More opponents will be willing to come to Huntington and play on a first-rate surface with on-site locker room facilities. Yes, the Herd will be getting its kicks, on Route ... 60.
