2011 Season Preview
2011 MARSHALL UNIversity 2011 Season Preview Two seasons ago the Thundering Herd men’s soccer team established itself as one of the best in the country. By going 10-7-2, and earning a finals appearance in the everchallenging Conference USA, Marshall soccer set itself up for future success. 2010 didn’t see the Herd take the jump it wanted to, though. After starting strong and positioning itself as high as third in the C-USA standings, the team took just two points from four games - all of which went into overtime and fell at UAB on the final day of the season. When the smoke settled and the other results had played out, the Herd missed out on the postseason by a single point. For the Herd, though, pride can still be taken from the fact that it put together its first back-to-back winning seasons since 20002001, and with Coach Gray - who won his 400th career game last season - still leading the charge, Marshall looks well-equipped for success heading into 2011. THUNDERING HERD BY POSITION FORWARDS Senior Carl Munday will spearhead the attack for Marshall this year as he looks to improve upon his team-leading 4 goals from last season. After scoring 29 goals in community college, Munday - who transferred to Marshall before the 2010 season - will be hoping to use his quickness and determination to reach new heights for the Herd this year. Another forward for the Herd this season will be junior transfer Eddy Prugh. After sitting out a season since playing his freshman year at Oregon State, Prugh will look to get back into form and become a key player in the Marshall attack. Sophomore Matt Risher is also returning to the team, and at 6-3, the Herd will look to take advantage of his aerial capabilities. Risher scored 2 goals in 2010.
have Matt Risher who is 6-3 and can score some goals for us late in games with his head. MIDFIELDERS The midfield area is somewhat of a mystery as Marshall heads into the 2011 season. Star forward Tom Jackson - who led the Herd with 11 points last season - is capable of dropping back into the midfield, where he will team up with C-USA All-Freshman Team member Anthony Virgara. Devin Perkins, a two year starter, is also returning, and he will hope to improve upon his 1 goal tally from last season. Experienced returners Kyle Sniatecki, Diego Ayala, and Fayanga Keita also return to the midfield, and they will be looking to resolve some of the mystery that surrounds this position on the Herd soccer team. Coach Gray: In the midfield we still have some question marks, as we’re trying to figure out who’s going to play where. We’re moving Jackson from a forward to the midfield, Devin Perkins is a two year starter returning for us, and Anthony Virgara, who I believe is one of the most exciting players in the conference, is also returning. DEFENDERS Despite a less-than-stellar preseason showing, the defense should be a strong point for the Herd this season. Returning to the lineup is senior center-back Jordan Hilgefort, who, in spite of being a defender, tied Carl Munday for the team lead in goals last season with 4. 2010 C-USA All-Freshman Team member Travis Brent will also return to the lineup, and he will look to team up with Hilgefort to make the Marshall backline one of the top units in C-USA.
Coach Gray: This year we are looking at two main guys to do the job for us in Carl Munday and Eddy Prugh. Even after sitting out a year, Prugh will be fine for us so long as he works hard, and Carl Munday is a returning guy who we are hoping finds the form that saw him score 29 goals at Louisburg Community College. We also
Coach Gray: Travis Brent and Jordan Hilgefort will be anchoring down the backline for us along with Cade Parton, Cody Partyka, Johnathan Mitchell, and others. The defense will be fine once they learn to work with each other. GOALKEEPERS The reigning C-USA Defender of the Year , Daniel Withrow, returns to the nets for Marshall this season, and he will be looking to live up to his 2011 C-USA Preseason AllConference billing. Last season Withrow claimed 5 shutout wins and allowed just 20 goals in 18 games. Returner Michael McCabe and freshman Logan Powell bring solid depth to the position. Coach Gray: The goalkeeper position should be the strength of our team with the defending C-USA Defender of the Year and First Team All-Conference member Daniel Withrow returning between the pipes. He’s really starting to hit his stride now.

The Marshall University men’s soccer team put together its first back-to-back winning seasons since 2000-2001 when it went 9-5-4 last fall. Following 2009’s impressive 10-7-2 record and C-USA Tournament finals appearance, the 2010 season was unfortunately tarnished by the failure of the Thundering Herd to reach the Conference USA postseason. However, the Herd understands how far it has come in the past three years, and to understand last season, one has to view it in light of those years before it. 2009 It was a quick rebuilding process for Coach Gray in 2009. With eight seniors graduating from a 2008 team that went 3-14-1, Marshall was picked to finish eighth in C-USA out of nine teams. However, with the most talented freshman class in the conference, along with a core group of returners and some key additions, Marshall took the conference by storm with wins over Kentucky, Florida International, SMU, Memphis, and South Carolina The Herd’s 1-3-1 start to 2009 became a distant memory as Marshall finished the season winning nine of its final 14 contests. That season, senior Dustin Dawes led the team in goals with seven, points with
16, and led C-USA with four game-winning goals. The center midfielder was an All-CUSA First-Team selection, and a member of the C-USA All-Academic Team. He also was the first ever Marshall soccer player to be named to the First-Team All-Midwest Region. Coach Gray’s confidence in his freshmen was evident in the Conference USA Tournament semifinal match against UAB. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Herd defeated the Blazers 4-3 in a shootout. The four successful Marshall penalty kicks came from freshmen Tom Jackson, Devin Perkins, Zach Hunter and Aaron Hembree. The emergence of goalkeeper Daniel Withrow was well-documented in the 2009 season as well. The redshirt freshman came up huge in the penalty shootout against UAB, saving two of the five UAB shots, including the fifth and final attempt. Withrow, the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, stopped all three PK’s he faced during the regular-season. Including the shootout, he denied an incredible five of eight penalty shots taken against him in 2009. 2010 Withrow continued his rise into last season, where he earned C-USA Defender of the Year honors for his five shutout wins. Along with teammate Jordan Hilgefort, he also earned Second-Team All-Midwest Region status. The sophomore keeper recorded 5 shutout wins and had 1 assist on the year.
2010 also saw two new faces take the field in the form of Anthony Virgara and Travis Brent. The two freshmen were key to the Herd’s winning season, and established themselves as regulars in the midfield and backline units resepectively. Virgara was second on the team in assists with 2, while Brent helped solidify a backline that allowed just 20 goals in 18 games.

Men’s soccer 2010 Season Review
Last year’s point leaders were Tom Jackson, Sammy Boateng, Carl Munday, and Jordan Hilgefort. Jackson, who began his career in 2009 with a bang, didn’t score as many goals as some people would have predicted, but still led the team with 11 points from 3 goals and 5 assists. Senior Sammy Boateng was the king of the assist category, though, earning 8 assists to go with his 1 goal. Boateng moved up to third in the Marshall University career assists category with 16. Hilgefort and new arrival Carl Munday led the team with 4 goals apiece. Indeed, all of these players were key to Marshall attaining its 9-5-4 record in an exciting 2010 season. After a dull 0-0 draw with Xavier on opening night, the Herd claimed victories over Oakland and Radford before drawing with Liberty 1-1. Marshall then rattled off 3 straight wins, including an exciting, 2-1, overtime victory over C-USA foe Memphis in which freshman Matt Risher scored the golden goal. Undefeated through 7 games and 1-0 in the conference, the Herd looked poised for a C-USA postseason repeat.

However, back-to-back, 1-2, overtime losses to ETSU and UCF effectively ended that streak, and after those tough defeats the Herd never seemed to return to full strength.
A big 4-1 win over South Carolina on senior night re-injected some life into Marshall, though, and left the Herd sitting in a good position to reach the C-USA postseason for a second straight year. Yet even after defeating Winthrop 3-2, the Herd was unable to maintain momentum and get the necessary win over UAB in the final game of the season.
Despite defeating Shawnee State 3-0 and claiming an important 2-0 win over FIU, the Herd claimed just a single point from

postseason by a solitary point, as Tulsa and UAB moved ahead of them in the final standings. Nevertheless, Marshall held its head high, knowing that by putting together its first back-to-back winning seasons since 2000-01, it had continued to set a standard for soccer excellence. For seniors Sammy Boateng and Mathew Butler it was the end of an era, but each had left his legacy on a program that will hopefully continue its ascension to C-USA’s elite.
Gray’s Coaching Record
148-139-21
Bob Gray, the sixth head coach in the program’s 37-year history, enters his 17th season at the helm of Marshall men’s soccer. With 28 winning seasons in 34 years of collegiate coaching, and a career record of 403-215-46, Gray is continuing his legacy as one of the NCAA’s winningest coaches. In 16 seasons with the Herd, Gray has amassed a record of 148-139-21, and notched his 400th career win last season. 2009 was arguably Gray’s most successful season with the Herd, as he turned around a 3-14-1 team from 2008 into a 10-7-2 contender in ‘09. With a 6-2 Conference USA mark that year, Marshall advanced all the way to the conference championship game and turned heads in the college soccer world. For his efforts, Gray was named the C-USA Coach of the Year for 2009. With nine returning starters and a host of young talent, the Herd were expected to compete for a championship and an NCAA berth in 2010. However, the team fell short of the C-USA postseason with a final game loss to UAB. Gray and the Herd still managed to put together a solid 9-5-4 record, though, capping off the team’s first back-toback winning seasons since the 2000-2001 campaigns. In 2007, the Herd’s third in C-USA, Gray led Marshall to its second appearance in the conference tournament, where the team claimed an opening-round, 3-1 upset win over Kentucky before succumbing to FIU in the semifinals. During the 2005 campaign, Gray led the Herd in its inaugural season in Conference USA to a 4-3-2 conference mark. His efforts and success were noted as he was honored with Conference USA Coach of the Year honors. In 2004, Gray became the first Marshall men’s soccer coach to eclipse the 100-win plateau in the Herd’s 1-0 victory over Alabama A&M. In 2000, Gray passed Jack DeFazio for first place on the all-time victory list in Marshall men’s soccer history. Gray won his 300th career game in 1998 when the Herd defeated Eastern Michigan, 3-1, becoming one of only 10 active Division I coaches to achieve this milestone. Prior to Marshall, Gray had an extremely successful stint at the University of Mobile, where he compiled a 47-12-4 record in three seasons.. Gray’s time at Mobile culminated in 1994 when he led the Rams to a 21-4 record and reached the NAIA National Championship game. Before Mobile, Gray spent 14 years as head coach of Alderson-Broaddus College - his alma-mater - from 1978-91. Gray guided the Battlers to five appearances in the NAIA National Tournament, and in those five appearances, saw his teams finish second (1981 and 1988) and third (1983 and 1991) twice. On his way to 255 wins, Gray became one of the winningest coaches in NAIA history, and in 1998 was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Gray was a five-time Area Coach of the Year and was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 1991. He was also named West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times and captured seven league titles. Gray has become very involved in the local and national soccer communities. He is the director of the local West Virginia Rowdies youth club teams that have won multiple state championships, and he is also the chairman of the player selection committee for the MLS Combine. In 2004, he was appointed to the USSF National Instructional Staff. Gray’s love of the game shows in his coaching philosophy, as he stresses both hard work, and the importance of having fun. So far that combination has been successful, and he will be hoping for more of the same in 2011. Gray and his wife Kay have two children; Nicole and Matthew.

Thomas Olivier Assistant Coach, Third Season Thomas (Toe-Moss) Olivier (O-Live-E-A) enters his third season as an assistant coach for the Thundering Herd. A native of Bonsecours, France, Olivier has extensive coaching experience at the youth, club, and collegiate levels. In his first year as assistant coach, Olivier helped guide the Herd to a 10-7-2 record, and continued the winning trend by assisting the herd to a 9-5-4 finish this past season. With Olivier’s ties to the club and international scenes, he is primarily involved with recruiting, and has helped head coach Bob Gray recruit some of the best freshman classes in Conference USA from 2009-2011. Olivier and Gray have known each other since Olivier relocated to Charleston and started working with the Olympic Development Program (ODP). Before moving to West Virginia in June 2006,
Olivier spent eight years in Ann Arbor, Michigan, working full time for the Ann Arbor Aresenal Youth Club. In his last four years at the club he was the Director of Coaching. He currently holds that same position for the Charleston FC club in Charleston, W.Va. Olivier is a member of the WVSA coaching education staff, as well as the WVSA ODP coaching staff. Olivier holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma, a US Soccer “B” license, and is a member of the US Youth Soccer Region I coaching staff. “I worked with Thomas at the ODP level and saw what he brought to the table,” said Gray. “He has a vast knowledge of the game, international experience, a great passion, and he’s a winner.” Also assisting the Herd this season will be Alex Fatovic, a former Long Island University goalkeeper standout. Fatovic arrives following a successful stint as coach of George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia, where he helped lead the team to back-to-back Virginia state titles. Fatovic also played in the United Soccer League (USL) for three seasons.

COACH GRAY: “We are excited about our newcomers for this 2011 season. Eddy Prugh is a transfer who we think will be good for us up top. Cade Parton, a South African transfer from Bethel University, is another guy who we are excited about, along with freshman Johnathan Mitchell who showed us some good things in the preseason. The two Jamaican transfers, Deshawn and Jahvon, are also two guys who we can’t wait to get playing after they arrived to us late in the preseason. We’re hoping they will be immediate contributors.”

Marshall’s 8 home games this season - against ETSU, Oakland, Winthrop, Memphis, SMU, Shawnee State, UAB, and Tulsa - may very well prove to be its last on Sam Hood Field. Following this 2011 season, Marshall is preparing to break ground on a new soccer facility at the Veteran’s Memorial Field House. “It’s bittersweet this year because we’re all looking forward to our new facility, but at the same time I remember when we built this field from scratch. It’s been home for the last several years and it was made with a lot of sweat, hardwork, and generous donations. Hopefully we can send it out with a bang.” - Coach Gray
Men’s
soccer
Sam Hood Field, one of the finest soccer facilities in Conference USA and home of the Marshall Thundering Herd, provides one of the nation’s best home field advantages. With an overall record of 72-33-8 (.673), the Herd has outscored its opponents 256-130 in 113 games of action at Sam Hood Field. Sam Hood Field was restored as one of the toughest places to win in Conference USA during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. In ‘09, the Herd was 6-1 at home with its sole loss coming to No. 12 Tulsa, 2-1. Marshall defeated C-USA foes Memphis, SMU, and UAB at Sam Hood Field that season, and took down FIU and South Carolina in 2010. Overall the Herd went 5-2-1 at home in 2010. Committed to competing against the nation’s best, Marshall hosted a pair of ranked conference opponents, No. 10 SMU and No. 11 Tulsa, during the 2007 campaign. Despite a few losses, the Herd still managed to salvage four wins, including a thrilling double-overtime victory over Western Kentucky. During the 2006 season, the Herd posted a major upset at home with a 2-1 victory over its highest ranked opponent, No. 11 South Carolina, and then forced a 1-1 tie with No. 17 Kentucky. With an enthusiastic crowd that routinely exceeds 1,000 spectators, Sam Hood Field is consistently viewed as a hostile environment for opposing teams. Sam Hood Field has been the home to Marshall soccer since 1996, thanks to a generous donation from local businessman and former Marshall men’s soccer coach Sam Hood (1981). Since its completion, Marshall has constantly made significant efforts to ensure Sam Hood Field remains one of the top premier soccer fields. With the addition of stadium lights in 1997, a new scoreboard in 1998, and permanent bleachers that bring the seating capacity to 1,500, Sam Hood Field is a facility that is constantly improving. The 2007 season marked a new first for Herd soccer when a press box was established at the facility. The addition allowed for statisticians, radio crews, and video capabilities to work with an aerial view of Sam Hood Field. Arguably, the most exciting aspect of Sam Hood Field is the playing surface itself. Bermuda grass is the world’s premier surface for soccer and Marshall University is one of the northern-most schools in the nation to have such a pitch. Prior to the 2007 season, a new drainage system was put into place to keep the Bermuda grass ready for competition throughout a heavy rainstorm. The men’s soccer team utilizes the adjacent Jonathan Edward Dunfee Strength and Conditioning Center, which opened in the summer of 2006, and is looking forward to the construction of a new soccer stadium for the 2012 season.

His proven experience and accomplishments unequivocally demonstrate his ability to translate vision into action that leads to success. An added, but by no means less important quality of this individual is that he is a proud and successful Son of Marshall.” Hamrick played football at Marshall University from 1976 to 1980, starting at linebacker and defensive end his last two years. Marshall University Located in beautiful Huntington, W.Va., Marshall University is the focal point of a city with a population of about 50,000. Situated in a Tri-State area of more than 300,000 people, the Huntington campus, noted for its attractiveness, level terrain, and accessibility, occupies about 88 acres near the center of town, a few blocks east of downtown, and just a walk away from the banks of the Ohio River. Marshall also has a campus in South Charleston, W.Va., and multiple centers across the state. Marshall University is named after John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States from 1801 through 1835. The longest serving Chief Justice in United States Supreme Court history, Marshall is widely regarded as having established a broad interpretation of the Constitution of the United States, which established the Constitution as the basis of the American legal system and the “rule of law” as the law of the land. During his tenure as Chief Justice, the Judicial Branch of the new American government rose to a level of importance commensurate with that of the Executive and Legislative branches. Marshall was founded as Marshall Academy in 1837, designated a college in 1858, termed a state school in 1867, and finally titled Marshall University in 1961.

Today, Marshall University is a thriving institution that functions through 13 divisions: the Elizabeth McDowell Lewis College of Business, the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Information Technology and Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Health Professions, the College of Science, the Marshall University Graduate College, the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, University College, the School of Extended Education, and the Graduate School of Education and Professional Development. Enrollment at Marshall University is about 13,814 and in spring 2007, more than 2,600 degrees were awarded at the university’s 170th commencement. Several major construction projects have been completed in recent years at Marshall University. Among those are the John Deaver Drinko Library and Information Center, which has a 24-hour study center and more than 250 computers available for student use, the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University, the Robert C. Byrd Center for Rural Health, the Jomie Jazz Center, a 1,000-space parking garage, a 500-bed residential housing complex, and

the Harless Dining Hall. In 2007, the $48 million Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center opened, as did a $22 million Clinical Education and Outreach Center on the site of the former Fairfield Stadium – past football home of the Marshall Thundering Herd. Additionally, a $94 million public-private project is underway on the Huntington campus. Main components of the plan are two new living/learning residence halls, which will open in time for the fall 2008 semester, and a 123,000 square-foot student recreation center, which is projected to open in January 2009. The new softball facility opened in the spring of 2008. As a state-supported university, financial assistance is a distinct advantage at Marshall. About 60 percent of the university’s students receive financial assistance through grants, loans, student employment and/or academic scholarships, with annual financial aid awards exceeding $92 million. Academic possibilities abound at Marshall with 97 degree programs, including 46 on the baccalaureate level and 42 on the master’s level. Marshall provides a variety of academic options that give students a solid foundation for future success. Among them are exciting study-abroad opportunities, with more than 125 programs offered in 35 countries. Marshall’s fundamental mission is to make public higher education available to all qualified individuals, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or creed. Through special programs, such as the Higher Education for Learning Problems (H.E.L.P.) program and the West Virginia Autism Training Center, Marshall provides exclusive learning opportunities for people who otherwise might be denied a college education. The John Hall Center for Academic Excellence highlights Marshall’s commitment to undergraduate education of the highest quality for outstanding students. Designed to provide academic opportunities and challenges, the center houses the John Marshall Scholars program and the prestigious Society of Yeager Scholars, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. As Marshall continues to expand its campus for future growth, its attention remains on the individual student. A quality education begins with an outstanding faculty. While course work is demanding, the atmosphere in which classes are conducted is casual and friendly, with a studentfaculty ratio of 20 to 1. Marshall professors take special care to get to know each

Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Center student and take pride in their students’ accomplishments. There is a genuine feeling of community spirit among the faculty, students and staff that makes Marshall a very special place. Because of the university’s size, each student can participate fully in all of the academic opportunities, including discussion groups, labs, internships and lecture classes. Building on a winning tradition and growing national presence, Marshall’s athletic programs are an integral part of the university. With 15 varsity sports,
Marshall athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in Conference USA. The Thundering Herd teams are an economic and social focal point of the university, its community and the Tri-State region. A competitive intramural program provides Marshall students a diverse range of opportunities to participate in team and individual sports.

MARSHALL
Huntington, W. Va., home of the Marshall Thundering Herd, is just that, a city that embraces its university. In the community of nearly 50,000 people, the love and support of Marshall can be seen in the fans adorned in green and white around town. As the second largest city in the Mountain State, Huntington has been able to keep its old-time charm while growing into a modern, bustling community centered around the growth and development of the university. A community based in the southwestern part of the state bordering Ohio and Kentucky, Huntington is a former railroad town etched on the Ohio River. Collis P.
