N SO ER ND R HE TE M EN C 6 The Cam Henderson Center, located in the heart of the Marshall University campus, is the home of the Thundering Herd volleyball team. Since the arrival of head coach Mitch Jacobs in 2002, the volleyball team has posted an impressive 64-16 record at home. Within the 213,000 square-foot, fully-equipped arena, the team finds the tools necessary to achieve success. The Henderson Center is a multi-purpose structure that house much of the Marshall University athletic department. Inside the facility is a majority of the athletic department staff, the ticket office, an 800-seat natatorium, a state of the art training room, and a weight room. The Henderson Center received a $5M renovation prior to the 1998-99 season that actually lowered the number of seats from 10,000+ to a more intimate 9,043. The lower half of the arena, which was originally built in 1981, was completely gutted and rebuilt with fan comfort in mind. Permanent, padded, chairback seating was installed along with walkways designed to allow fans to go from section to section without missing any of the game. The portable floor, which rested on top of a tarten surface, was also replaced with a permanent wooden floor that covers the entire arena base. In the fall of 2003, a refurbished floor and new scoreboard were also installed. Through the direction of ESPN, the arena also received state of the art wiring for television and radio broadcasts. The floor was again refurbished during the Summer of 2009. Prior to the 2001-02 season, a new Big Green Room (Bob Hartley Room) for pregame parties, banquets and functions was opened. The Bob Hartley Room sits beneath the north side stands. The Hartley room includes meeting rooms utilized by the basketball team throughout the year. The Summer of 2010 saw the facility receive new state-of-the art lighting that was part of a $3 million on-campus renovation project. The Herd volleyball has called the Henderson Center home since the 1994 season.

2011 Outlook Coach Mitch Jacobs’ team returned to Marshall’s campus on August 8, and prepared daily for the 2011 season. During the August practices, Jacobs and his staff were busy implementing a new offense and preparing six newcomers for collegiate volleyball. “We have a different type of offense we are looking to run right now,” noted Head Coach Mitch Jacobs. “We have hitters who have become more experienced. We were, aside from Liz Herman last year, so young in terms of every offensive player. Now we have lifted in the off-season, we’re stronger and conditioned and knowing what to expect and how to take care of bodies.” The volleyball program will be building off a 12-20 record from the 2010 season. With eight starters returning to the court, the 2011 season looks promising with the amount of experience coming back for the new year. Despite losing two vital components from last year’s squad in Elizabeth Herman and Elizabeth Fleming, Coach Jacob’s brings back a battle-hardened team from last year. Leading the way for the Herd will be lone senior, Cameron Yoho. In 2010 Yoho finished with 213 kills as a middle blocker and had the second most starts on the team. She led the team in attack percentage (.268) as well as in total blocks (78). “Cameron is doing an outstanding job of what a senior needs to do,” said Coach Jacobs. “The players understand what is needed of them in terms of responsibilities for pre-practice, during practice, and post-practice. Seniors have to make sure everyone is on task and Cameron has done
8
a great job with that. As far as on the court, Cameron looks better right now pre-season than I have seen her at any time. I’m looking for a good year out of Cam.” Entering his tenth year as the leader of the Herd, Jacobs the all-time wins leader in program history (179-109) also brings back four juniors, four sophomores and introduces six newcomers to the Marshall program. Setters After having one of Marshall’s most experienced setters in program history, Elizabeth Fleming, graduate after the 2010 season, the setter position will have a fresh face for the first time in four years. Junior Ryanne Milligan returns with the most setting experience from last year. Last year she led the team in service aces with 28 and is expected to be a versatile tool for the 2011 season. She also had the best serve receive average after posting 13 errors and a .966 percentage. Also vying for the starting setter position will be the two incoming freshmen, Sammie Bane and Katie Potts. Bane was selected as a Prepvolleyball.com All-American and Senior Ace last year. She earned first team Indiana All-State accolades and team MVP on three occasions, along with Indiana Academic All-State Honorable Mention accolades. Potts comes in as a setter, but will be used as a ride side hitter as well this year. During her high school career, Potts helped lead her team to a 2010 5A State Championship Runner-Up position, while earning First Team AllState, Senior All-Star, along with breaking the school record for assists in a career with 1,024. Potts averaged 8.22 assists per set during her career, first in school history and fifth in the state of Georgia. “Both incoming setters have done a really good job in pre-season. They are good competitors and are adding to the team,” commented Coach Jacobs on the freshmen duo.
2011 Outlook Outside Hitter Despite losing one of the conference’s most dominant outside hitters in Elizabeth Herman, the outside hitter position brings back a wealth of experience and energetic young players. Junior Abby Tomas returns with the second highest amount of kills from last year with 257. She returns with the most experience in the aerial attack as well after having 742 total attacks. Sophomore Laura Der returns with the third most starts on the team from 2010. As a true freshman she stepped into the outside hitter position and collected 207 kills and 1.73 kills per set. She also was second on the team in digs with 362 and led the team in serve receives with 708. Freshmen Hannah Bailey and Katie Potts will be fighting for time at the outside hitter position. Bailey is a 5-11 freshman from Ceredo, W.Va., where she played volleyball for Spring Valley High School. She led her high school to a West Virginia state championship in 2009. Middle Blocker The middle blocker position brings back the most veteran players. Three upperclassmen will be playing the middle blocker position including senior Cameron Yoho and juniors Sacha Byous-McConnell and Desirre Wilkerson. Yoho as the lone senior comes back with 213 kills and the best attack percentage from 2010. She also finished second on the team in service aces with 25.
with the most libero experience and ended the season last year with a team leading 366 digs and 582 serve receives. Katy Schad comes back after finishing the 2010 season with 325 digs and 640 serve receives. Adding to the defensive specialist depth will be junior Andrea Booker and freshmen Ali Suttles and Sarah Legg. Legg comes to Marshall as a Yeager Scholarship winner. Her father is one of the coaches for the Marshall football program.

Head Coach Mitch Jacobs 10th Season
Head Coach Iowa, 1991
The Marshall University volleyball team has been nothing short of spectacular since the arrival of head coach Mitch Jacobs in 2002. The twotime Conference USA Coach of the Year enters his tenth year with the Marshall program after guiding the Thundering Herd to seven 20-plus win seasons in his first eight campaigns. • This past season, in a rebuilding stage of the program, Coach Jacob’s team marked a 12-20 record on the season. Jacobs helped coach senior standout, Elizabeth Herman to a first team All C-USA selection after averaging a 3.94 kills per set ratio and tallying 429 kills. He also coached Elizabeth Fleming, who earned ESPN Academic All-American honors. • The 2009 Thundering Herd posted a 22-9 (10-6 Conference USA) tally, which included a school record nine-consecutive victories to open the season. The season start of ninestraight wins surpassed the 1980 MU previous record of six wins. • In the nine seasons as head coach of the Herd, Jacobs has led MU to several individual and team milestones. Since the realignment of Conference USA in 2005, he has coached three-time C-USA Player of the Year Kelly-Anne Billingy, C-USA Setter of the Year Katie Stein, 12 Player’s of the Week, 11 Setter’s of the Week and has seen 16 players named to an All-C-USA squad.

ment, earned a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinals but dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 semifinals contest to conclude a brilliant season. • Jacobs was awarded Co-Coach of the Year honors for his efforts during the 2007 season. He also reached the 300-win milestone on Sept. 23 with a 3-1 victory over Tulsa. Jacobs now stands at 349 career wins, racking up victories at Florida Tech and Fairfield University prior to joining the Herd. Jacobs’ 65.0 win-percentage is also tops in program history for coaches who have coached in 50-ormore matches. • During his first campaign in 2002, the Morton Grove, Ill., native brought about a berth in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, a 20-win season, and a 10-1 home match record. All were firsts in over four years for the Marshall Volleyball program, which had been struggling before Jacobs’ arrival. • Before coming to Huntington, Jacobs was the head coach at Fairfield University for three years. While at Fairfield, Jacobs led the Stags to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three top ten Mideast Regional rankings (6th in `99, 7th in `00, and 10th in `01), three straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championships, and two MAAC Regular Season Championships. His three year coaching record at Fairfield was 75-24, including an astounding 26-1 in conference play and 6-0 in tournament play. He coached six All-MAAC players, including two Players of the Year and one Rookie of the Year. The classroom was also no stranger to Jacobs’ players at Fairfield, as his teams’ GPA never strayed below the 3.0 mark after each academic year during his tenure. • Prior to his time at Fairfield, Jacobs spent six successful years at Division II Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. He became the school’s all-time leader in career volleyball coaching wins, while leading the Panthers to the first winning season in the school’s history. In fact, Florida Tech had five winning seasons during his six years in Melbourne. His teams were consistently ranked in the top six in the South Region, and one of his teams (1996) gained the school’s first ever Top 25 ranking for the volleyball program. Like his teams at Fairfield, his Panthers also excelled on the academic side. The volleyball team finished 11 of 12 semesters with the highest GPA among all athletic programs at Florida Tech.
• In 15 of 18 years as a head coach, Jacobs has posted a winning record. Preceding Florida Tech, Jacobs served as an assistant at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla., from 1991-93. • Jacobs also brings considerable club experience to Marshall and the Tri-State community. While at Fairfield, he was the Director of Coaching Development and Technical Training and the Director of the Travel Program with the Connecticut Juniors Volleyball Club in Woodbridge, Conn. At Florida Tech, he developed the Harbour City Juniors Volleyball Club Team, where he built a highly successful juniors program. In Tampa, he received his first head coaching experience with the Tampa Bay Juniors Volleyball Club. • Internationally, Jacobs was an assistant coach for the USA Maccabiah Team in 2001, and in the summer of 2004 he was selected to coach one of two teams from the United States to play in the under-20 Sibillini Tournament in Italy. Jacobs was the head coach of Team Third Degree and guided the squad to the bronze medal. In the summer of 2009, he served as an assistant coach for the USA/BIP Development Team. The squad went a perfect 8-0 in tournament play and captured its first ever Global Challenge Championship in Pula, Croatia. • Jacobs graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of Iowa in 1991. While at Iowa, he played for the men’s club volleyball team.

Conference USA Welcome to Conference USA, home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are steeped in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leadership in athletics, academics and in our communities. Dedication to excellence is a common thread for C-USA and the guiding initiative for the league’s promising future. All C-USA institutions sponsor Division I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic programs, many of which compete regularly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards six postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. SUCCESS ON THE PLAYING FIELD Conference USA performers have achieved great success in competition, placing the league among the top conferences in the nation. In addition, 28 volleyball teams, 43 men’s and women’s soccer teams and 17 softball teams have earned NCAA Tournament bids. C-USA has sent three men’s soccer teams to the NCAA College Cup, five softball teams to the Women’s College World Series and three volleyball teams to the Sweet 16. The league has also had three national champions in NCAA track and field competition, one national champion in diving and numerous NCAA individual and team competitors in cross country, golf, swimming, tennis and track and field. Overall, Conference USA teams and individuals have made 506 NCAA appearances. SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD C-USA institutions are among the nation’s best in academic performance among student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions off the playing field as well. In 12 years, 105 student-athletes earned national ESPN The Magazine Academic AllAmerica honors, while 338 were named All-District. In addition, more than 13,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or received the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA ON TV C-USA enjoys significant television exposure through its partnerships with ESPN Inc. and College Sports Television Networks (CSTV). The league entered into long-term agreements with both ESPN and CSTV, which, combined, provides C-USA with significant national and regional exposure for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and all other conference sports. Additionally, the CSTV agreement includes video-on-demand, Internet, broadband, national over-the-air and satellite radio, and wireless distribution as well as corporate marketing rights, and website production through CSTV Online, a subsidiary of CSTV. The agreement with ESPN extends the conference’s current regular season football package to include the broadcast of the conference’s Football Championship Game. It also encompasses distribution of men’s basketball and women’s basketball on ESPN/ESPN2 and both tournament championship games. C-USA IN THE COMMUNITY The conference’s footprint is concentrated with 12 members in nine states and a combined area population of nearly 17 million. More than 1.1 million living alumni represent C-USA schools across the nation. With a renewed commitment to community involvement, the conference has begun development of several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations. GOVERNANCE Along with the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC, Conference USA is one of the seven conferences having significant representation in the NCAA governance structure. The Presidents of the member institutions serve as the league’s Board of Directors. R. Gerald Turner of SMU will serve as chair of the Board for 2007-08. A PROUD HISTORY; A PROMISING FUTURE Conference USA was formed in 1995 and quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top conferences. The conference unveiled its name, logo and commissioner on April 24, 1995 in Chicago. The league’s charter members included Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996. The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and after nine years, relocated to the current office in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named Commissioner in October 2002, succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s first commissioner. C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997; Army in 1998 and UAB began football play in 1999. The league added TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports and they began competition in 2001. USF started C-USA football in 2003. After celebrating its 10th Anniversary during the 2004-05 season, C-USA began a new chapter in 2005-06 when its current membership came together to form the new look of the league. Since its formation, C-USA has established a strong foundation, an identity and a history that reflects the league’s national presence. Twelve years of remarkable history has reinforced the league’s position in collegiate athletics, setting the course for the next decade and beyond. C-USA PRINCIPLES AND STANDARDS OF SPORTSMANSHIP Conference USA member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal of pursuing victory with honor in intercollegiate athletics. The Conference believes that athletics should be conducted in a way that reflects positively on the individual participants and institutions. The standards of sportsmanship below are written to emphasize the basic expectations of the Conference related to sportsmanship and provide the Commissioner with broad authority to ensure that Conference activities are consistent with these principles. The essential elements of sportsmanship and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of character building and six core principles: respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, integrity and good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these six principles.
