01 INTRODUCTION Surry Hills is a successful central business district located in Sydney, New South Wales. Over the years, the city had undergone continuous urban developments which helps the area to flourish and becoming well-known to locals and tourists. Its rich in mixture of residential and industrial helps the city to have high-density population, small business communities and thriving creative scenes.

02 AIM I aim to analyze the after effects of urban developments to the city, comparing Surry Hills from year 2013 and 2020. In this study, I will analyze 3 main aspects;

BRIEF HISTORY OF SURRY HILLS

1787 Surry Hills was discovered in poor condition; sandy and full of swamps.

1860

1947

Number of residents soared, increasing the demands of terrace houses and constructions. Number of mechanics, skilled artisans and shopkeepers increased as number of elites declined.

Shortage on housing was city-wide, thus state government redeveloped the terraces to factories and large public housing blocks.

1942 Industries in Surry Hills were flourishing before the attack on Sydney Harbor.

2021 1820 Wealthy ex-convicts and colonial elite became attracted to Surry Hills and started building large estates and breweries. Growing produce and setting up industries was highly encouraged.

1905 Sydney was rebuilt after years of destruction due to 1890s economic depression wave. Numerous numbers of workers’ residences demolished and replaced with inner city warehouses, factories and shops.

1980 The number of students and young professionals to relocate to Surry Hills increases due to its proximity to the city and was seen to be a more desirable location to suburban areas. Soon, it became an attractive location leading numerous contemporary apartment building to be added.

Surry Hills is now a constantly evolving that consists a mix of residential and business scene.

In 1991, the urban extent was recorded to be 113,035 hectares. Following 9 years after, the urban extent for year of 2000 shows an increase of average annual rate of 1.6%, recorded to be 162.527 hectares. Following that, every year shows an increase in the average annual rate.

Originally the home to the Aboriginal people, Sydney now has become an international economic capital to the world. The city is on track to be 60% urbanised by the year 2030, creating opportunities for the infrastructure of the city.

ANALYSIS #1

Sydney has one of the richest architecture style being the oldest city. Being said that, the city is constantly evolving with new development projects. The construction industry in Australia is one of the largest sector contributing to the economy yearly.
