The Metro Tunnel Creative Program curates artworks and events to enrich Melbourne city life alongside the construction of the Metro Tunnel. Committed to a program of temporary creative works, the project offsets disruptions at worksites, maintaining the city’s vibrancy and appeal during this transformative phase. This program fosters community interaction with construction sites and supports local businesses at the interface of site boundaries and the city core.
Within the Urban Integration and Creative Strategy team, this role involves B2B communications through coordinating meetings and correspondence with Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) delivery partners, achieving exceptional creative outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
• Facilitating the procurement process for permanent artworks;
• Overseeing temporary installations;
• Managing festival sponsorships;
• Organizing ‘Making the Metro Tunnel’ exhibition; and
• Supporting local businesses in the post COVID-19 landscape.
Additionally, the role entails collaborating with internal stakeholders on communication strategies for public art programs and providing comprehensive support to artists throughout the procurement process, ensuring the delivery of impactful design solutions.

[ FIVE NEW UNDERGROUND STATION LOCATIONS ]
To ensure the achievement of legacy outcomes, a suite of complementary documents has been prepared to guide planning and delivery.
These include:
• Metro Tunnel Urban Design Strategy;
• Metro Tunnel Creative Strategy; and
• Living Infrastructure Plan.
The project involves multiple contractors and delivery partners, with strategies to ensure a holistic, integrated design approach that prioritizes people and upholds Melbourne’s design excellence.
Facilitate delivery partner Cross Yarra Partnership (CYP) in curating the Making the Metro Tunnel Exhibition. Responsibilities include organizing artwork for the space, designing the wayfinding through the exhibition, grouping topics and artists per room, creating the exhibition catalogue, coordinating meetings and correspondence with stakeholders.
Embed legacy artworks in new stations and precincts, enhancing the city’s transport infrastructure with culturally reflective and visually striking pieces. Commission local and international artists to create world-class integrated artworks for the new Metro Tunnel Stations, transforming functional spaces into civic landmarks inspired by each site’s unique identity.
Manage a high-profile public art program, ensuring artworks meet the highest standards of design excellence. Advocate for the inclusion of First Nation artists, incorporating culturally significant elements to promote diversity and inclusivity. Strategically integrate artworks to aid in wayfinding, enhancing user experience and accessibility within the transportation system.

During the Metro Tunnel Project, a strategic approach engaged local residents, businesses, visitors, and the broader Melbourne community. Regular meetings and correspondence with stakeholders and delivery partners guided efforts to support local businesses affected by COVID-19 and mitigate construction impacts.
Projects were aligned with construction stages to minimize noise and disruption, temporary public spaces were created for reflection, interaction, play, and wonder. Local businesses and community needs were carefully addressed, ensuring new opportunities for discovery and engagement during the construction period. This collaboration fostered resilience and continuity, enhancing the urban experience despite construction challenges.

Establish partnership opportunities with community and cultural organizations connected to the precincts during project construction. Conduct regular meetings and correspondence with stakeholders to ensure collaboration and goal alignment.
Commission artists and curate festival contributions, working closely with senior management and delivery partners to maintain sponsorship budgets within scope. Support inclusivity and diversity across Melbourne’s many cultures, emphasizing Aboriginal history, heritage and the critical role of migration.
Engage diverse communities interacting with the Metro Tunnel Project, fostering a sense of ownership and connection. This approach not only mitigates construction impacts but also enriches Melbourne’s cultural fabric through thoughtful and inclusive public art initiatives.
