MARSHWOOD ARTS AWARDS 2017

THE MARSHWOOD ARTS AWARDS 2017 Saturday 4 November - Saturday 2 December The Marshwood Arts Awards, first launched in 2008, were motivated by an appreciation of the extraordinary talent and quality of work being produced by artists, designers and craftsmen in the South West. For this reason the Marshwood Vale Magazine decided to create an on-going opportunity for artists involved in a range of media, to show their work in a mixed exhibition—hence the Marshwood Arts Awards. This initiative and the subsequent four exhibitions have provided opportunities for artists to have their work chosen by their peers—five experienced artists in their particular field who are committed to supporting, promoting and encouraging the arts. The reputation of both the quality of the selectors and the resulting exhibitions has created interest from artists and designers all over the country and entries are now received from as far afield as Scotland and Cornwall. This year, artists and makers were invited to submit work in four categories: Painting & Drawing; Sculpture; Photography & Digital Media and Applied Arts. The work was presented anonymously to the selectors who chose three exhibitors from each category, 9 from Applied Arts. This year the selectors were so impressed by the quality of work submitted they asked to include a ‘Highly Commended’ category adding a further fourteen exhibitors. A total of 32 artists have been invited to join the selectors in this showcase exhibition. The generous support of sponsors has made it possible to offer a cash prize for the category winners and runners up. A new award, the John Hubbard Memorial Prize, added this year in appreciation of the support and encouragement given by the late contemporary artist John Hubbard, will be presented to one of the artists showing in this exhibition. The chosen artist will receive a cash prize, donated by John Hubbard’s family and the Marshwood Vale Magazine.

These images of the hands of Dorset residents are part of a larger series entitled ‘A Show of Hands’, in which I have taken alternative portraits of people from a wide variety of professions who’s hands are an intrinsic part of their work. From airline pilot to zoo keeper I have focused on capturing the details of their lives etched into their hands. Hands are so fragile and yet so strong, so sensitive and yet durable, and most importantly are the point at which we touch and shape the world around us. www.timbooth.com

Clare Trenchard Sculpture

Clare trained at Chelsea School of Art where she graduated in 1979. She shows in London with Flying Colours Gallery in Chelsea, Sladers Yard in West Bay and with Josie Eastwood fine Art in Winchester. She has work, both drawings and sculpture, in private collections in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, France, Italy and Belgium. Clare’s work often mythical is largely about trying to convey the idea of movement “It is the essence of the thing I am trying to get” www.claretrenchard.com

I work from, and within, particular landscapes as prompts for me to make abstract images which are expressive and decorative in intent and not necessarily descriptive. I start by working directly from the landscape, working outdoors in watercolour and ink. In the studio, the source of the imagery becomes less important as the process of making the painting adds to its meaning and possibilities, and the imagery grows more speculative and invented. I often incorporate collage and elements of pasted paper as these allow me to keep the painting, and its potential meaning, open and provisional. www.jimhunterpaintings.co.uk

Bjรถrk Haraldsdottir Applied Arts

I have been working as a full time Ceramist for 5 years. I qualified as an Architect form the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art in 1991. I spent 20 years working in Architectural Practices, including my own. My professional background in Architecture is a strong influence on my work. In addition I also reference natural forms reflecting my upbringing in Iceland and exposure to the extraordinary in nature. Inspiration is found in anything from Nordic stitching to Architectural detail, geology to shell forms. Much of the work reflects a conversation between the geometric perfection of tessellated pattern, and the inherent imperfections of hand-built forms. I am interested in the way that patterns change and challenge form, and how something as fluid as clay can be perceived as geometrical and mathematically perfect. The excitement comes from the blurring of the boundaries of the two coming together: the perceived perfect geometry of the pattern blending with the geometrically imperfect form which handbuilt clay object inevitably is. www.ceramicsbybjork.com

Before the motor car was king – Roaming the dismantled trackbeds of Dorset In 1963, as part of Dr Beeching’s report The Reshaping of British Railways, one third of the country’s rail network was recommended for permanent closure, with many rural lines forming the proposals. Today, deprived of their intended purpose, these remaining monuments in iron, concrete, brick, earth and wood can appear anachronistic, often standing alone and devoid of context. Fifty years on, this rich legacy, from a once state owned transportation system, offers a poignant reminder of a time before the motor car was king. www.christopherdown.com

Jason Sumray Painting & Drawing

In my recent series of paintings I have forgone the inclusion of people and sought images that deal with their absence. Using dark backgrounds, I am concerned with the possibilities of making a psychological space. I am interested in creating a drama with a slow tempo, where the forms are gradually made out in the darkness and where their significance is a gradual unfolding. I have been exploring images where the human presence is felt, where drawers are half open, stools and chairs empty, plates, cutlery, jugs and serviettes left on the dinner table. www.jasonsumray.co.uk

Isla Chaney Sculpture

Much of my work is concerned with the relationship between form and space. Negative spaces within and around the forms are just as important as the objects themselves. I am often drawn to natural forms, abstracting and distorting magnified elements. Focusing on the rhythms and patterns inherent to all natural phenomena. Creating structures that are concerned with the internal architecture of things. Within my practice works range in scale from small intimate objects to those that are far lager and more robust. Suitable for various applications from domestic to commercial to outside public art commissions.

Dominika Kupcova Applied Arts

Dominika Kupcova is a jewellery designer and maker who aims to create complex, eye-catching structures with an element of optical illusion, carefully constructed using repeated layers of linear pattern. The work is informed by the aesthetic properties of the DNA double helix and DNA testing outcome, inspiration generated through an interest in science and genetics since childhood. Dominika’s work is created using a combination of hand and manufacturing processes – time-consuming and repetitive skills of metal work alongside quicker, modern techniques such as laser cutting. The resultant body of work pursues to seamlessly combine precious metals, with non-precious materials of paper and card. www.dominikakupcovajewellery.com
