Baskerville was an attempt to improve upon the typefaces of William Caslon. It is most known for its crisp edges, high contrast and generous proportions. Existing printing presses did not capture the subtleties of his type, so Baskerville redesigned the press replacing the wooden platen with a brass one in order to allow the planes to meet more evenly.

As an ode to the invention that shaped reading habits and the idea of legibility, the typewriter on its 100th anniversary. It is a compromise between the rigidity of its ancestor and the expectations of the digital age, American Typewriter retains the typical typewriter alphabet forms, lending the font a hint of nostalgia. When released it was only available for use on photocomposition equipment.
