A B OU T M E My name is Marta Drapinska and I am graduate of master studies on faculty of Landscape Architecture at Warsaw University of Life Sciences in Poland. I find happiness in discovering new things, in contact with other people and nature. I find happiness in beauty and art, in the freedom and traveling. I find happiness in opening my mind to new experiences. And at the same time I always filter all these feelings through strict thinking. I am always questioning found situations. I often find myself in-between these two worlds, trying to reconcile them. Being ’ in-between’ these two states of mind, being open and creative and then strict and conctrete, going back and forth is for me the definition of good designing process. And it is something I learned and discovered during the year of exchange in Copenhagen. As well as benefits of group working which lets people with different background for easy flow of ideas and thoughts and learn a lot from themselves. That is how architecture became my passion and the way of looking at world. It is not only a profession, but also a state of mind. It teached me how important is contact with nature nowadays and by that how important became the role of landscape architect. By that I feel obligated to create better cities, resilient and sustainable, where people can live healthy and safe, enjoing the beauty of nature. Marta Drapinska, landscape architect

BORDER ON TEST

V E S TA M AG E R

WHAT WAS THE PROJECT ABOUT? Urbanism studio course during the exchange at University of Copenhagen gave me a lot of new experiences and knowledge. The main topic was to identify all kinds of borders existing in the terrain and try to deal with them. Our foundation of the project was designing with processes over time in mind. As we found many values in this terrain of Amager island, we didn’t want to change the character of the place. Big open areas and unprogrammed natural terrains have undoubtfully many qualities in big cities.

We decided to create place were people could observe global warming changes and try to examinate different species of plants watching how these changes affectes them. LABORATORYFIELDS That would be place where people could observe the climate changes and plants condition according to the habitat. Fields would be open for visitors being a totally new kind of object and attraction in Denmark.

MASTER THESIS

P RAGA PO L N OC Increasing level of city resilience by sustainable rainwater management

MASTER THESIS- MAIN IDEA Urbanization process is considered to be a cause of climatic changes in the cities. Disturbances in the hydrological cycle cause longer drought periods, heat waves and flash floods that impede citizen’s everyday life. Some of the European countries have already begun the process of increasing city

resilience by implementing political strategies. Some of the existing strategies and solutions have been described in the thesis. Afterwords, all the rainwater solutions have been collected to become a theoretical basis for the next part of the thesis, which is a project of sustainable rainwater solutions for the part of the Praga Północ district.

Next stage was anylizing area in terms of important factors and elements observed withing the area.

SELECTED RAINWATER MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS

DESCRIBED IN THE THESIS

Below are presented rain water sollutions that help in small scale water harvesting. All of them were selected and described in the thesis to create teoretical foundation for project-the tird part of the thesis.

Below are presented some of the solutions used in the project part of the thesis shown by hand drawing.

LANDSCAPE FILM During this course I learned how to use different methods of representation of both registrations and proposal. I used film, collages, models and instalations in different combinations to investigate how discover different qualities of the place.

During couple of weeks we were investigating different aspects of area as bodily gaze, movement or sound. After that we were working on interventions that could change the place according to the observed qualities.

BELOW ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THE SCREEN SHOTS FROM THE FILMS

1.WHAT I FOUND

2.PROCESS

Preparing films of all the aspects, made me understand and get know this place better. The most important fact for me was huge disconnection caused by highway. It divides the neighbourhood into two parts. There is only one small band that connects them. This is the place I chose to plan my intervention.

Although there is a highway with heavy traffic under this place, on top of the area we can not hear anythink. The quality I found was tranquility and silence between trees and shrubs. During the first weeks when we were describing the bodily gaze I was talking about the sense of spherical form around me when I was between the trees and shrubs. I showed it in my film as well. This was foundation for the intervention.

3 . I N T E RV E N T IO N - S I L E N T I S L A N D I designed ‘silent island’. This place is created to show to the citizens the quality of the place. This introvertic place is in a form of pavilion, floating on the water, that is a small library - reading or working place for few people. Whole area is surrounded by high Populus nigra ‘Italica’. High wall made of trees helps to create even more transcendential atmosphere.

Nowadays almost all of us have mobile devices showing our location. It is getting more common to use GPS signal or Bluetooth to analyze spatial relations and human movement for better understanding of space and design better solutions that fit to the need of population.

I investigated human movement by following people passing this area to collect data about their speed and spots where they stop, slow down or speed up. After loading data I processed them to analyze all these aspects of their movement.
