Castelo da Maia, Portugal
On the abandoned industrial site in the centre of the Portugese village Castelo da Maia the brief requires a petrol station, plant nursery and associated programme. Instead of dividing car space and human space, we decided to embrace the presence of the car and create a place where both cars and humans are accommodated. A sense of place is created by the design of a canopy supported by a forest of columns. The location of these columns and the placing of rooftop vegetation creates open and enclosed places, determining the possible uses of the space while allowing for great flexibility. Parking and charging electric cars happens throughout the site. Due to the flexibility, all sorts of events can happen everywhere on the site. A former production hall is refurbished and becomes a plant nursery that uses the entire site as a showcase for their plants. A restaurant, shop and artist galeries allow for sufficient programme indoors, while the jet wash and maintenance garage offer everything a motorist needs. The design turns an abandoned factory into a flexible, multifunctional and dynamic centre for the futrure for Castelo da Maia.

Street life is the result of my graduation year in the Master of Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture of the TU Delft. It deals with problematics that occur in Asian new towns related to their generic designs and monofunctionality. It proposes to revitalise these new towns by reconnecting them to their specific context and transforming them to meet both market demands as well as societal needs. Extensive research led to five building blocks for design. These building blocks were the leading input for transformation. The test location for this approach is Splendora, a typical new town fifteen kilometres West of the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.

The former military terrain in Sijsele is the location for one of the projects of Tjerk Wobbes. It focuses on urban metabolism. As a friend I helped out with the graphic presentation of his ideas. The project aims to upgrade the urban metabolism, improving flows of material, water, heat, energy and waste within the boundaries of the terrain and within the larger urban fabric of the village of Sijsele in the surroundings of Bruges, Belgium.

The Vertical Cities Asia competition was premised on the belief that a new paradigm of high density compact urban development was necessary for rapidly urbanising Asia, which is besieged by massive rural-urban migrations. For the 2013 competition, a site 17 kilometres

West of Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital was appointed. Closely connected to this location on the urban fringe was the theme; ‘everyone harvests’. During a site visit, it was found that infrastructure, a regional vision for housing, industry and agriculture, and a well design mobility plan were actually much more needed for the city. A regional vision, including designs for satellite cities, was developed, in which these issues were addressed. The competition team consisted of 14 TU Delft students. Credits also go to: Brendan Bakker, Donatas Baltrusaitis, Emilia Bruck, Michael Cerrone, Saskia van Eijk, Wouter van Faassen, Alise Jekabsone, Tomas Kalinauskas, Jaewoo Lee, Joost Noorden, Pim Schachtschabel, Joni Silaj and Vaidotas Vaiciulis.

Location
Zandvoort, the Netherlands
Zandvoort has to deal with many issues; it is both a small residential seaside town as well as a major destination for a day at the beach when the weather is good. On such days, the town’s roads get blocked and in particular wayfinding from the station is difficult as well. This project proposes a new station, closer to the sea in order to improve the connection to the beach. However, the station has two main entrances, with different characters. Apart from the new beach entrance there will be a town entrance to serve the daily needs of Zandvoort’s inhabitants.

I helped to organise the studio, improving the studio structure and facilities. Many tasks, such as arranging lectures, rooms, schedules, basic lay-outs, studio booklets and studio promotion were amongst my responsibilities. I also organised a busy multi-disciplinary lunch lecture to reinforce the ties between the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Civil Engineering.

Lab The prestigious inter-disciplinary graduation lab Delta Interventions focuses on civil engineering and urban design challenges in flood-risk management. Civil engineering students are invited to join this knowledge and design lab in September 2013. The lab finds itself at the cutting edge of civil and urban challenges and is one of the key projects of the TU Delft. This year the studio will focus on four regions: the Dutch SouthWest Delta and IJsselmeer Delta, and the Houston and New York cases. The studio involves an excursion to New York!
