THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND AND THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY PRESENT

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S

Go Back for Murder

Dunsinane

By David Greig Directed by Roxana Silbert Featuring Siobhan Redmond and Jonny Phillips

Macbeth is dead, long live the King. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, Siward, the commanding officer, is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards Macbeth’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war.

“If it's riveting spectacle, challenging ideas and human drama you want, this is the show to see.”The Times ★★★★

Dial M for Murder by Frederick Knott

Directed by Lucy Bailey

★★★★★

When murder calls…hang up. Frederick Knott’s intense and darkly gripping thriller, Dial M for Murder, famously filmed by Alfred Hitchcock, is now on a UK tour. Tony is convinced his wife is having an affair. We watch mesmerised at Tony’s precision in planning what must surely be the perfect murder… until it falters in the most unexpected way. Claustrophobic and frightening, Lucy Bailey’s exciting new production reclaims this brilliant and erotic tale of betrayal, passion and ultimately, murder. Lucy Bailey’s directing credits include The Postman Always Rings Twice in the West End and a number of productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company including The Taming of the Shrew, The Winter’s Tale and Julius Caesar which also transferred to New York.

Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells, dance theatre choreographer Jasmin Vardimon presents Yesterday, a retrospective work created to mark her company’s 10th anniversary, featuring some of the most breath-taking moments from her repertoire, integrated with powerful new choreography and stunning live video animation. Contrasting flashes of daring athleticism and moments of touching beauty, eight international performers interweave scenes of intimate and vulnerable tenderness with provocative humour and playful choreography. Tuesday 29 October SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE PRESENTS

Second Coming/ Winter, Again Scottish Dance Theatre presents two contrasting and bold new works by internationally acclaimed choreographers. Montreal-based Victor Quijada takes urban dance to a new theatrical territory. His world–acclaimed dance style is heavily influenced by the Los Angeles street-dance culture he grew up in. Second Coming, Victor’s new work, is an exclusive commission for Scottish Dance Theatre and sets Victor’s unique break movement style to a potent turntablist soundtrack by DJ/composer Jasper Gahunia (AKA DJ Lil’ Jaz). Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren is a theatre sensation, having toured his works in 50 countries. Mixing beautifully poised dance with all means necessary to tell a story, Jo’s work is sculpted by an attitude to dance-making that is wild and rigorous. Scottish Dance Theatre is the first to invite him to our shores to create the bold new work Winter, Again. The piece will take you on a journey through the cycle of the darkest, coldest season, using songs from Schubert’s Eine Winterreise. 7.30pm

Madama Butterfly

Aida - the grandest of all operas

Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000. Foregoing sentimentality to create a rich cast of characters with unflinchingly human characteristics, his production lays bare a hugely atmospheric, poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed. Puccini’s sense of theatre is second to none and Butterfly sees him doing what he does best – painting beautifully exotic pictures in sound that are dramatic, often hauntingly lyrical, and full of emotion. Korean soprano Hye-Youn Lee, one of The Independent on Sunday ’s ‘Faces to Watch’ in 2013, and Anne Sophie Duprels (Manon 2009) share the role of Butterfly. José Ferrero (Tosca 2012) is Pinkerton. New Music Director Emmanuel Joel-Hornak (Hansel and Gretel 2012) conducts.

Aida, the grandest of all Ellen Kent’s operas returns to the UK with a stunning, traditional brand new production of this magnificent story of war, jealousy and revenge, at whose heart is the doomed love of the beautiful Ethiopian slave girl, Aida, and the Egyptian hero, Radames. Traditionally staged, this lavish production with amazing special effects includes spectacular ballet sequences, stunning sets inspired by the Valley of the Kings and costumes taken from designs found in tomb paintings. Featuring the classic Triumphal March with an incredible pyrotechnic display using the most spectacular effects including a magnificent wall of fire inspired by Vulcan, the Lord of Fire, under whose temple that Radames and Aida met their death in an enclosed chamber – NOT TO BE MISSED!

OPERA & BALLET INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS AN ELLEN KENT PRODUCTION VERDI’S

Don Giovanni has long been recognised as one of Sir Thomas Allen’s signature roles on stage. This year he’s looking at it from the other side of the curtain for the first time, teaming up again with designer Simon Higlett and Lighting Designer Mark Jonathan to bring their hallmark theatricality to what promises to be a definitive telling of this extraordinary opera. Dark, vivid and bursting with life, Don Giovanni is full-blooded opera at its best. Exquisite arias, powerful orchestration, dramatic recitative and lightly crafted comedy combine in an ever-changing score. The cast balances experience with exciting new talent. Jacques Imbrailo winner of the Cardiff Singer of the World Audience Prize, is Don Giovanni, performing alongside internationally acclaimed singers Péter Kálmán, Susan Gritton and beloved Scottish soprano Lisa Milne. Rising star, Italian Speranza Scappucci conducts.

Serene, spiritual and heartbreakingly lovely, Vaughan Williams’ Fifth is quite simply one of the finest symphonies ever composed in Britain. It’s a wonderful contrast to Britten’s deadpan take on English folklore – and a startlingly different world to Shostakovich’s tense political thriller of a Cello Concerto. Appropriately this new work is paired with a powerful and exciting work by Mathias himself. Rachmaninov’s Variations on a Theme of Paganini, in which the brilliant soloist is Mikhail Kazakevich, represents a return to a more Romantic age, while the second half of the concert consists of a timeless favourite – Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. This concert is part of sound, North East Scotland’s contemporary music festival.

Jean Sibelius, on the other hand, drew his inspiration from Finland's long struggle for cultural freedom. Thomas Dausgaard loves every note; and if you heard Denis Kozhukhin's breathtaking Prokofiev concerto performances in recent BBC SSO seasons, you'll know to expect every bit as much electricity when the two of them tackle Rachmaninov's best-loved piano concerto.

Yet he found such an appreciative audience in Prague, that he dedicated the symphony to “the good people of Prague”. Llyr Williams draws the two cities together with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 23, written in Vienna, and Janácek’s Concertino, written in Prague shortly after his opera The Cunning Little Vixen. The Concertino depicts scenes of nature, featuring a ‘grumpy hedgehog’ and a ‘fidgety squirrel’.

Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony launches one of the most gripping autobiographical dramas in all music. But then, this concert tells a powerfully emotional secret story, whether it's Berlioz unleashing his inner swashbuckler in the Corsaire overture, or Elgar letting a cello speak of his anguish in the aftermath of World War I. Under the BBC SSO's chief conductor Donald Runnicles, and with young American cellist Alisa Weilerstein as soloist in the Elgar, there is no shortage of passion - or poetry.

Schumann Symphony No 1 ‘Spring’ Mozart Piano Concerto No 25 In C, K503 Schumann Symphony No 4 In D Minor Robin Ticciati Conductor Paul Lewis Piano Symphonies preoccupied Schumann throughout his 30s; the first took just four days to be born, others cost him years of effort. Together they stand as a profound and pleasurable legacy. Schumann also had a great love of Mozart, whose Piano Concerto No 25 played by the brilliant Paul Lewis rounds off this concert. Schumann said: “Music — so different from painting — is the art which we enjoy most in company with others.” Come and share in one of the Season highlights.

“To call Natalie MacMaster the most dynamic performer in Celtic music today is high praise, but it still doesn't get at just how remarkable a concert artist this Cape Breton Island fiddler has become” The Boston Herald

Musicians from across Scotland gather in the Music Hall for a foot-tapping, hand-clapping night of the very best of traditional music. The Aberdeen Strathspey and Reel Society are joined by players from groups across the country and a stellar lineup of soloists and young musicians. Under the baton of their new conductor, the society will perform a programme of engrossing music from soulful slow airs to rattling reels.

Eddi Reader The National Plus special guest Youth Pipe Band Kieran Goss of Scotland

The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland is a non-competing cutting edge performance pipe band for 10-25 year olds in Scotland. Launched in 2002 by The National Piping Centre, the National Youth Pipe Band is the only organisation of its kind to bring Scotland’s most talented young musicians together at a national level. This year’s Live in Aberdeen concert will showcase the talented members of the Senior Band performing a mix of traditional and contemporary music and also feature dancers from the Dawn Walker School of Dance. The concert will also feature a special performance by the Highland Youth Pipe Band not to be missed.

Eddi Reader was brought into the limelight with Fairground Attraction and their single Perfect and album First of a Million Kisses, which both topped the British charts. However, it has been her subsequent solo albums which signalled her increasing ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them all very much her own. From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi brings to joyous life all forms of song and what sets Reader apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance; her ability not only to move the listener but to connect her experience to that of her audience.

Mike + The Mechanics

Formed in 1984 by Genesis founding member, guitarist, bass-player and songwriter Mike Rutherford, Mike + The Mechanics was a side project that would go on to sell over 10 million records worldwide. Originally featuring vocalists Paul Carrack and Paul Young (formerly of Sad Café), the group developed a rich catalogue of hit after hit including Silent Running, All I Need Is A Miracle, Over My Shoulder and the massive worldwide hit single The Living Years. In 2010, Rutherford joined forces with one of the UK's most successful R&B acts Andrew Roachford and Canadian born actor and singer Tim Howar for a new generation of Mike + The Mechanics who have been touring together across the UK and Europe ever since. Since this new generation of the band has come to form, Mike Rutherford has shared writing duties with Andrew Roachford - known for storming the UK Charts in the 90s with the anthem Cuddly Toy. Roachford became Columbia's biggest selling UK act for ten years, with tunes like Only To Be With You to The Way That I Feel becoming international hits and giving Roachford the opportunity to tour the world and hone his talent - becoming the truly great entertainer that he is today. Joining Roachford and sharing the vocal duties is Tim Howar, a Canadian actor/singer who came to the UK 10 years ago to start a band in the country where his icons were born. He formed and toured with Vantramp supporting the likes of Rod Stewart, Paulo Nutini, Sugababes and Newton Faulkner. Currently starring in the hit West End musical Rock of Ages as Stacee Jaxx, Howar's acting career has seen him perform on Broadway, as well as touring the US and Canada and saw Tim take the starring role as Rod Stewart in the show Tonight's The Night. 7.30pm

Craig Campbell’s Ardal Thrilling Mic Hunt! O’Hanlon

Internationally acclaimed Canadian stand-up Craig Campbell brings his highly anticipated new live show to venues nationwide. Craig has supported Frankie Boyle on his last two sellout national tours, has performed smokin' sets on Dave’s One Night Stand (DAVE), Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC Three), Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC One) and has more recently been touring the critically acclaimed 2012 Edinburgh show ‘Return of the Lumberjacks’ alongside fellow Canadians; Stewart Francis and Glenn Wool. Catch this master storyteller in a venue near you now! “Bringing a tale to life like a young Billy Connolly” Edinburgh Evening News “One of the most skilled storytellers and jokesmiths on the circuit” Chortle 8pm

Father Ted star, Ardal O’Hanlon is delighted to present his latest stand-up show for 2013. The style is observational, the subject matter is Life itself, and the default expression is one of utter disbelief! Lurking beneath Ardal’s mild-mannered demeanour resides a sharp and probing (and fairly mild-mannered) comic brain. Sometimes thoughtful, sometimes silly, but always punchy, he has tickled audiences all over the world. In a comprehensive set, he talks about not just the things that matter but also about the things that don’t matter at all. Which covers pretty much everything. “Charm, intelligence and fabulous phrasemaking” The Guardian

ABERDEEN PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS

Derren Brown: Infamous

The multi-award winning acknowledged master of psychological illusion returns to the stage with his latest one-man show Derren Brown: Infamous. The show promises to demonstrate once again why Derren is one of the world’s most renowned live performers; a dark manipulator of magic and mind control. For Infamous, a more ‘personal’ show, Derren is re-united with his close collaborator and friend actor, writer Andy Nyman. Infamous is Derren’s 6th show since 2003. He has toured every year since then and been watched by an estimated audience of over 2 million people. He has won two prestigious Olivier Awards, for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012), and confesses that touring is still his favourite thing to do.

He recently made his debut playing with both the BBC SSO and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. WRITER Wednesday 27 November

POET

William McIlvanney

Carol Ann Duffy

William McIlvanney is one of Scotland's finest and best loved writers. His mainstream novels, including Docherty (winner of the Whitbread Prize) and The Big Man (film starring Liam Neesson) were followed by the hugely successful Laidlaw series of detective novels. He is acknowledged by the current generation of Scottish crime writers (including Ian Rankin and Val Macdermid) as an inspiration and a master of the genre. In a year when all of his novels are being reissued, it's a privilege to welcome him back to Aberdeen (where he had two spells as Writerin-residence at the University) and to celebrate the man and his work.

Carol Ann Duffy, the UK's Poet Laureate, has single-handedly brought poetry to a mass audience with work that is sublimely beautiful, deeply moving, outrageously funny, and above all, accessible. She reaches all ages and has read to audiences of school pupils numbering thousands. She has redefined the Laureateship for the 21st Century, engaged and engaging, writing on contentious themes from the Iraq War to MPs expenses, commissioning new work from other poets and publishing in newspapers. In performance she is mesmerising, and in Aberdeen she will be accompanied by musician John Sampson in what is sure to be a magical session.
