It’s Victorian 1900s. A judge has allowed his jury to witness a séance to establish the guilt or innocence of the accused. James MacGregor, a well-known medium, is on trial for the murder of his brother. This séance is James’ last chance to prove his innocence. Amidst the candles and velvet, he attempts to connect with the jury and the spirit world. Expect a journey of magic, crime and human fragility. Is James a charlatan, or a man who has found the truth? FOLK

See his black eyes glistening Feel my heartbeat quickening - In the night. When Grace discovers her estranged mother has died, she journeys back to her island home. But the circumstances of her mother’s death unlock a strange new world that challenges everything Grace believes in. Led through a dark journey by a talking crow, a pedantic husband, a rebellious minister and spirited daughter, Grace’s scientific mind is overwhelmed by mythology, religion and spiritualism. A new musical play which unites multi-disciplined artists Annie Grace, Alan McHugh and Morna Young with director Dougie Irvine. Co-written, co-composed and coperformed by the artists, FOLK is a contemporary folktale - a story of faith and love – exploring human existence in our modern world.

Freshly Squeezed Productions has curated a small season as part of Climate Week North East which takes place around Aberdeen and the Shire from 16 – 25 March 2018. www.climateweekaberdeen.org As part of this season, we’ve programmed one of our infamous Scratch Nights and invite you to submit your short scripts, spoken word, or new music all inspired by climate action. Join us for a night of new work, raw talent and the call for action against climate change. Submissions to our Scratch Nights are open to anyone. Scripts must be no longer than ten minutes and written for between one and three characters. If you are a spoken word artist or up-and-coming musician or comedian, please submit samples of the work you are interested in performing. Deadline for submissions: 5pm, Monday 26 February 2018. Rambert Ghost Dances and other works

DANCE

HMT

Christopher Bruce’s masterpiece, Ghost Dances, is the most popular work in Rambert’s history. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death – in the form of the iconic “ghost dancers” – interrupts the lives of a series of ordinary people. Created as a response to political oppression in South America, it uses imagery from the Day of the Dead and bewitching traditional music to create a moving, intensely human work. Also on the programme from Britain’s national dance company is Goat, a new dance theatre creation by Ben Duke, inspired by the music and spirit of Nina Simone, and Symbiosis, an all-action work by internationally acclaimed choreographer Andonis Foniadakis. With live music throughout from the Rambert Orchestra, it’s a memorable evening of world class dance.

OPERA

Sung in Russian with English supertitles

Thursday 10 & Saturday 12 May 2018 SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS TCHAIKOVSKY’S

Eugene Onegin

New production Supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle Tchaikovsky and Pushkin: two of Russia’s greatest artists come together in this sweeping tale of unfulfilled love. A lovesick young girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends. Director Oliver Mears (The Royal Opera) teams up with awardwinning designer Annemarie Woods, setting this hopelessly romantic opera in a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Tchaikovsky’s soaring score, not heard on Scottish Opera’s main stage since 1993, is the most radiant of Russian lyric operas. Dramatic and expressive, it captures perfectly the desperation and raw emotion of Pushkin’s masterpiece. Natalya Romaniw (Rusalka 2016), fast making a name for herself in the Russian repertoire, sings Tatyana. Samuel Dale Johnson (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) is Onegin. Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra

This concert ranges widely – from Rebel’s Les Élémens, an eighteenth-century work famed for its dramatic evocation of creation, to Martinu’s small-scale concerto – his Viola Rhapsody. Between them, we hear the Biblical Songs of Dvorák; which stand testament to his lyric genius and profound Christian faith. The concert concludes with Haydn’s Symphony No 96, sometimes known as ‘The Miracle’ after an accident involving a falling chandelier.

“Today I saw 16 swans. God, what beauty!” A vision of natural wonder inspired the tune that crowns Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony – and once heard, it’s never forgotten. Rising British conductor Jamie Phillips will charge every note with freshness and awe. But before that, the 22-year old Mozart takes Paris by storm and the one and only Ning Feng pours out his heart in the sumptuous Violin Concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the Viennese genius who defined the “Hollywood sound”.

Beethoven ‘Emperor’ Concerto

Few pianists truly deserve the epithet ‘great’ but Elisabeth Leonskaja is surely one of them. Now in her seventies, she continues to cast a spell over audiences, especially in her interpretations of Beethoven. Clemens Schuldt acknowledges Leonskaja’s heritage with two hugely popular symphonies by the greatest Soviet composers. The shenanigans and wit of Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ contrast starkly with the intense tragedy unleashed by Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony. 7.30pm

Long before the end of a live show and the frequent standing ovations that accompany it, there comes a point where Elkie does something so amazing that it leaves her audience almost spellbound. It could be a particularly emotional rendition of one of her ballads, a powerhouse blues vocal or one of her trademark impossibly long notes that leaves the audience mesmerised. Saltfishforty & Basco

THE LEMON TREE STEPPING OUT

To the uninitiated, Saltfishforty are Douglas Montgomery (fiddle/viola) and Brian Cromarty (guitar/mandola/vocals), a duo hailing from Orkney. To those who are familiar with this powerhouse of a partnership, they are quite simply one of the best live acts on the folk scene. With their focus on Orkney music taking in traditional, contemporary and original material, boldly cross-fertilised with influences from Americana to East European folk, plus a highoctane whiff of heavy metal, there is simply no-one else like Saltfishforty. They will be joined for this Northern Arc session by Basco, a fiddle-scraping, box-belting, cittern-smacking folk/roots band with members from Denmark, Sweden and Australia. Their music is complex and varied, from hard hitting, high-speed reels full of rosin dust and sweat, through sweet and melancholy tunes that tell of loves won and lost, of fitful fever-dreams of fractal complexity and fascinating texture, to songs that when you come down to it, are really just about sex.

Heidi Talbot and Väsen

STEPPING OUT

Heidi Talbot’s sound revels in the comforting and restorative powers of music, never maudlin or overly dark but gently uplifting, cheering and enlightening. Heidi will be performing tonight with her trio which includes her husband John McCusker on violin, cittern and whistles and Innes White on guitar. All three of Väsen are instrumental virtuosos in their own right, and together they form a unique supernatural being. With origins deeply rooted in the forests and rich earth of the Swedish countryside, theirs is a tradition spiced with consummate playing skills. But this is more than just a traditional sound - there’s a playfulness to their music, a joyousness, and a delight in making exciting new arrangements of centuries-old tunes, and new originals inspired by the tradition. Rock, jazz, traditional, and classical influences weave together, making music that’s beautiful but never cloying. With Heidi’s songs of great beauty and exhilarating musicianship from Väsen, we anticipate yet another breathtaking, not to be missed, unique collaboration in our latest Northern Arc session.

David Baddiel

Milton Jones Is Out There

Dara O Briain

Following a sold out run at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory and two critically-acclaimed West End runs, David Baddiel takes his Olivier-nominated oneman show to theatres nationwide. My Family: Not the Sitcom is a show about memory, ageing, infidelity, dysfunctional relatives, moral policing on social media, golf, and gay cats. A massively disrespectful celebration of the lives of David Baddiel’s late sex-mad mother, Sarah, and dementia-ridden father, Colin. Come and be offended on David’s behalf! “ Baddiel launches himself into the Louis CK league of no-holds-barred comedy”HHHHH Metro

No, really out there and this time he hasn’t just forgotten his keys. He’s holding up the mirror of truth to society, and he can see right through it, which means its probably just a window. He will also be scaling the heights of fashion at the risk of falling into a terrible cravat. Milton will be talking about his life so far - the ups, the downs and why buying his own see-saw was the best decision he ever made. But perhaps he should give all this up and seek the highest office in the land - but how do you get a desk and a swivel chair up a mountain? Oh and now he wants to be Prime Minister too. Can we do worse than the politicians we already have? Yes we can!

Dara is one of the most recognisable faces on British TV, as host of the hugely successful Mock The Week, Star Gazing Live, Robotwars and Go8Bit. Catch one of the most charismatic, intelligent, fast-talking and downright funny live performers working today in this brand new show for 2018. “ His set is a masterclass in intelligent, no-frills stand-up” THE GUARDIAN “ If you want a comic who can hold an audience in the palm of his hand for two hours, here’s your man” THE TIMES “ Sharp wit from a superfit mind” EVENING STANDARD

“Once you’ve had a baby you’re a parent and immediately you go from being a madman (cool) to a mad dad (not cool). How can you be a dangerous, edgy, rebel with a tiny, little daughter?” “How do we make sense of the madness of our lives once we become parents? What am I going to tell my daughter about conformity and responsibility? What happens if she grows up to be like me? Or, worse, to date a man like me?”

The British Comedy Award nominee and star of Live At The Apollo and 8 Out Of 10 Cats is embarking on a nationwide tour to complain about the state of the world and offer no solutions. Since his last show he has become a husband and father, seen the UK vote to leave the EU and watched the rise of Donald Trump, all of which leaves him asking one question, why does it seem that no one else alive can correctly load a dishwasher? Come and see what Jon Richardson can do with words when he has more than thirty seconds to work with. Or should that be “with which to work”?

Following phenomenal demand and instant sell-outs across the country, comedy powerhouse and star of Taskmaster, Live at The Apollo and Stand Up for the Week, Paul Chowdhry has announced extra dates in spring 2018. “ It’s a rare and joyous thing to see a stand up so vibrant and imperiously on top of his game” The Mail on Sunday Book now to avoid disappointment, innit.
