Jackie The Musical
Once there was a time with no mobiles, no online dating and no Facebook, when teenage girls waited with bated breath by the letterbox for their weekly issue of Jackie Magazine. In Jackie The Musical we revisit those heady days, and tell the story of a recent divorcée who seeks advice once more from the pages of her old Jackie annuals. The quizzes, the fashion tips, the ‘do’s and don’ts on first date’ and above all the Cathy and Claire problem pages are all eagerly devoured by our plucky heroine as she revisits the dizzy world of the teen bible. With her ex and a handsome new guy in tow, the valuable lessons she learnt as a girl begin to influence her future and Jackie discovers the one person in control of her life is... her. Starring Janet Dibley (The Two of Us, EastEnders, Fat Friends), Olivier Award nominee Graham Bickley (Ragtime, Bread) and Nicholas Bailey (EastEnders, The Archers), Jackie The Musical features classic 70’s hits, played live on stage by a world class band. Thrill once more to the unmistakable sounds of pop idols Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan and many more. Tue - Sat 7.30pm, Sat 2.30pm

The Commitments
Blood Brothers
The Commitments is a fantastically feel good celebration of soul. Direct from a phenomenally successful, record breaking run in London’s West End, The Commitments is based on the BAFTA award-winning film classic. The Commitments is the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working class music fan, who shapes an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians and friends into an amazing live act, the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced. The Commitments received universal critical acclaim following its London World Premiere and was quickly hailed as a smash hit musical sensation. The Commitments musical has been adapted from the novel by Booker prize winning author Roddy Doyle himself and is directed by award-winning Jamie Lloyd.
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

The Cheviot, the Stag & the Black, Black Oil Dundee Rep’s 5-star, sell-out production of John McGrath’s The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil arrives in Aberdeen. The highly acclaimed production tells the history and the tragedy of Scotland, performed as a Highland ceilidh, with song, humour and drama intermixed; creating a unique theatrical event, that remains as vital and relevant today as it was when 7:84 Scotland first presented it, over 40 years ago. This extraordinary play looks at the exploitation and economic changes in the Scottish Highlands throughout history, from the ruthless evictions of Highland crofters making way for the more economically viable Cheviot sheep in the 18th century, to the development of stag hunts in game parks in the 19th century and finally the exploitation of resources during the North Sea Oil boom of the 1970’s. Written as a musical drama by John McGrath, it explores stories and experiences of Scotland’s land, sea and people across the centuries. Tue - Thu 7.30pm, Thu 2pm

Tuesday 11 & Wednesday 12 October RAPTURE THEATRE IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE MACROBERT ARTS CENTRE PRESENTS FROM THE WRITER OF SMASH HIT COMEDY NOISES OFF
Democracy
by Michael Frayn West Germany, 1969. Charismatic Willy Brandt has been elected Chancellor. When Brandt ‘dares more democracy’, his own party conspires, plots and tries to destroy him. As his enemies tighten the noose around his neck, Brandt believes the only man he can truly trust is Gunter Guillaume, his devoted personal assistant. But in the world of political intrigue, espionage and betrayal, is anyone to be trusted? Shakespearean in scale but with all the twists and spins of modern politics, Democracy combines the fascination of a John Le Carre thriller (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Night Manager) with the dynamism of The West Wing and House of Cards. Witty, thought provoking and highly entertaining, Democracy is a compelling and unmissable night at the theatre. Following an acclaimed West End run, Michael Frayn’s awardwinning play premieres in Scotland in an exciting new production from Scotland’s leading touring theatre company: Rapture Theatre. Tuesday 14 - Saturday 18 February 2017 Join the 7m theatregoers worldwide who have experienced “The most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter” Daily Telegraph. Continuing its record breaking run at the Fortune Theatre in London’s West End, The Woman in Black now embarks on a major UK Tour next Spring and is coming to His Majesty’s Theatre! Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation. This gripping production, directed by Robin Herford, is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds.

Swan Lake
World Premiere Scottish Ballet’s breathtaking production of Swan Lake is set to enchant a whole new generation with an imaginative retelling of the timeless tale. Swan Lake portrays the love story of Siegfried and the beautiful swan queen Odette. As fate has it, Siegfried betrays Odette as he mistakenly declares his love for Odile, the dark seductress. Eventually Odette forgives Siegfried, but the trust between them has been broken and Siegfried is forced to face life without her forever. Choreographed by the award-winning British dance maker David Dawson, Swan Lake will demonstrate his visceral and daring work which has made him one of the most innovative dance makers working in classical ballet today. With ethereal and stylish sets and costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s iconic score performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, don’t miss the Company’s first tour of this classic ballet in over 20 years.

JASMIN VARDIMON COMPANY PRESENTS
PHOENIX DANCE THEATRE
Jasmin Vardimon Company presents a brand new adaptation of the classic tale, Pinocchio. Based on the original book by Collodi, Pinocchio will bring to life the famous marionette as he embarks on a fantastic journey to become a human boy. Showcasing Vardimon’s uniquely theatrical choreographic and directorial style, Pinocchio will combine physical theatre, quirky characterisation, innovative technologies, text and dance to examine the idea of what it means to be human. With insightful humour, engaging drama and an acute observation of behaviour Pinocchio will take audiences on a wonderful journey of discovery through the parameters of this timeless and beloved fable.
Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Triple Bill 2016 showcases three engaging works in celebration of their 35th anniversary. Shakespeare’s most intimate, mysterious and radical sonnets are reimagined in Kate Flatt’s Undivided Loves which fuses sound, words and dance to a vibrant and percussive score. Co-commissioned with the Royal Ballet, Dutch/Isreali choreographer Itzik Galili reworks his piece Until.With/ Out.Enough, an emotional abstract journey filled with intimacy, athletic power and tension. Finally, the quirky and playful Bloom by award-winning choreographer Caroline Finn explores the darkly comic expressions of life and humanity.

But when his son Nanki-Poo falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum, it looks like someone might be heading for the executioner’s block… Packed with anti-Establishment silliness, and full of larger than life characters including self serving politicians that are all too recognisable today, this playful show features some of G&S’s most popular tunes, including Three little maids, Tit-willow and I’ve got a little list. Several of the cast from The Pirates of Penzance return, including Richard Suart, Nicholas Sharratt, Rebecca Bottone and former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Sioned Gwen Davies, alongside baritone Stephen Richardson and comic genius Andrew Shore.

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Sibelius Violin Concerto Glinka Ruslan and Ludmilla: Overture Sibelius Violin Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4 Alexandra Soumm Violin Ben Gernon Conductor Blink and you miss it: few overtures hurtle upwards and explode quite as brilliantly as Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmilla. But then, in the long winter nights of Northern Europe musicians have always known how to light up the sky. Sibelius’s Violin Concerto sounds like it’s lit by the midnight sun, and according to the critics, the rising French star Alexandra Soumm makes it glow with a special intensity. And Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony begins in an inferno of personal tragedy before cracking out the vodka and dancing till daybreak. Conductor Ben Gernon has a special flair for Tchaikovsky: on an autumn afternoon in Aberdeen, this should generate some serious heat.

The RSNO’s very own Leader Maya Iwabuchi is the soloist tonight; a tuneful centrepiece to a concert that begins in Mahler’s Alpine meadows and ends with RSNO Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Søndergård throwing caution to the winds in Beethoven’s wildest symphony: the uproarious Seventh. BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Runnicles Conducts Mahler 4 Mozart Exsultate jubilate* Mozart Symphony in D major Mozart Voi avete un cor fedele* Mahler Symphony No.4* Carolyn Sampson soprano* Donald Runnicles conductor A jangling of sleighbells, a little flurry of birdsong from the flutes – and is that a melody by Mozart? Not quite. Mahler’s Fourth Symphony might be his most classical in proportion, his most playful in style – outwardly, at any rate. But from deceptively innocent beginning to the “child’s vision of heaven” with which it ends, the Fourth has depths as poignant and profound as anything Mahler ever wrote. BBC SSO Conductor Emeritus Donald Runnicles is just the person to draw out its inner drama, and he’s joined by soprano Carolyn Sampson – who begins with two gloriously fresh vocal showpieces by the composer Mahler loved above all others: Mozart himself.

Beethoven – The ‘Emperor’ Mozart Overture, La clemenza di Tito Mozart Violin Concerto No 4 in D, K218 Berg Lyric Suite Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 ‘Emperor’ Alexander Janiczek Director/Violin Llyr Williams Piano A majestic close to the acclaimed two-year journey Llyr Williams and Alexander Janiczek have been taking with the SCO through the concertos of Mozart and Beethoven. ‘Emperor’ was never Beethoven’s title, but it well becomes such a grand, imposing work: tragically, it is the only one of his piano concertos that Beethoven never played. His deafness made it impossible. In contrast, Mozart’s youthful Violin Concerto is pure sunshine. Between them lies “… a small monument to a great love”. Berg’s hyperRomantic Lyric Suite conceals in its notes the story of a passionate love affair. 7.30pm

For Mozart, C Major was a region of self-confident optimism and cosmic order, as in the so-called ‘Linz’ symphony – written in just a few days in 1783. But Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture turns to C minor to create a musical journey to self-annihilation written for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s play. And the Magic Flute Overture? It’s in E-flat Major, C minor’s jubilant cousin… Pre-concert talk 2.15pm Details to follow
Dvorák Carnival Overture Vaughan Williams Concerto for Oboe and Strings Beethoven Symphony No 3 ‘Eroica’ Lahav Shani Conductor Adrian Wilson Oboe With two shattering chords, Ludwig van Beethoven blew the world of classical music wide open – and there’s still nothing to match the explosive power of his revolutionary Eroica Symphony. It’s a magnificent climax to an evening of music that simply won’t be kept down, whether it’s the blossoming beauty of Vaughan Williams’ radiant Oboe Concerto (played by the RSNO’s own Adrian Wilson) or a Dvorák overture that’s guaranteed to get any party started – all conducted by young dynamo Lahav Shani. BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Elgar’s Second Symphony Butterworth A Shropshire Lad: Rhapsody for orchestra Sir James MacMillan Viola Concerto Elgar Symphony No.2 Lawrence Power Viola Richard Farnes Conductor Elgar’s Second Symphony begins in a great, glowing surge of confidence and pride. Then something happens – the layers peel away, the shadows darken, and we hear a great artist laying bare his damaged soul with an intensity and truth unprecedented in British music. It’s unforgettable: an emotional autobiography on a par with Mahler, and a fitting counterpart to the terrible beauty of Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad, performed to mark the 100th anniversary of its composer’s death on the Somme. Sir James MacMillan’s new Viola Concerto, meanwhile, weds the dusky sound of the viola to orchestral writing of fiery brilliance and dark passion. Richard Farnes conducts its dedicatee, Lawrence Power. 3pm

Bach The Art of Fugue, Contrapunctus I & IV Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No 2 in D minor Schumann Symphony No 2 Philippe Herreweghe Conductor Martin Helmchen Piano The premiere of Schumann’s Second Symphony was conducted by his friend Felix Mendelssohn, and the work incorporates Bach’s ‘musical signature’ quoted in The Art of Fugue – the notes B-A-C-H (in English B-flat, A, C, B) – so surely he would nod approval at this programme. It was during the composition of this Symphony that Schumann began to experience the early signs of the mental disorder that would eventually bring his creative life to a premature halt. He wrote that “my resistant spirit had a visible influence on [the Symphony] and it is through this that I sought to fight my condition”.
