Together they aim to produce the worst show ever and run away to Rio with millions, but they soon learn that showbusiness can always find a way to kick you in the teeth. Dreamboats and Miniskirts
INSPIRED BY THE 7 SMASH HIT MULTI-MILLION SELLING ALBUMS OF DREAMBOATS AND PETTICOATS It’s 1963 and the world is changing. Bobby and Laura’s first single Dreamboats and Petticoats went to the top of the charts – but they haven’t been able to repeat that success with any further records. Norman and Sue have settled down to non-marital bliss – and a baby! But Ray and Donna seem blissfully happy… The advent of the Beatles and the Merseyside sound is inspirational. But will it inspire Bobby and Laura to have one more shot at stardom – Norman to “get off the drains” and find that singing voice he has longed for, and Ray to realise his ambition and manage a really top pop act!? All will be revealed in a follow up with the same wit, charm, and great songs as Dreamboats and Petticoats. Many of the songs are from the next period in pop history…

Jesus Christ Superstar Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 - stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score. As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar. Leading performer Glenn Carter returns as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Musical theatre star Tim Rogers, whose theatre credits include Carousel, Whistle Down the Wind and the title role in Jekyll & Hyde at the Union Theatre plays Judas Iscariot, while X Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji stars as Mary Magdalene direct from the UK and European tour of Thriller Live.

Mary Jane Wells: Heroine
Photo: Brian Hartley
Heroine is based on the true story of Danna Davies who served for 10 years in the US armed forces. She was the only woman in her company and led a squad into combat. She is also the survivor of military sexual trauma. When she led a secret mission into the Middle East, she and her assailant were two of the few survivors. Heroine is a human story about one female soldier’s experiences, and what healing and forgiveness really mean. www.maryjanewells.org www.heroinetheplay.com www.maryjanewells.org www.heroinetheplay.com

The Mousetrap The legendary, record-breaking, Box Office smash hit thriller returns! A classic. A landmark. A legend. The Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of theatre, with over 25,000 performances and now the 60th anniversary production is back by popular demand following a record breaking sell out week in 2013. The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be? One by one the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until at the last, nerve-shredding moment the identity and the motive are finally revealed. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner.

WINNER OF 19 MAJOR AWARDS
From Stephen Daldry, the Oscar nominated Director of The Reader, The Hours and Billy Elliot, comes the multi award-winning West End production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, An Inspector Calls. Hailed as the theatrical event of our generation winning more awards than any other play in history, this landmark production from the National Theatre has thrilled audiences in the West End, on Broadway and throughout the world with its epic and wildly imaginative staging, raw emotion, evocative score, lashing rain and chilling suspense. When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences.
Middle Ground Theatre Company Ltd is delighted to present a lavish new production of a classic Miss Marple mystery. “A murder is announced and will take place on Friday, October the thirteenth, at little Paddocks – at six-thirty p.m.” The residents of Chipping Cleghorn are astonished to read an advert in the local newspaper that a murder will take place this coming Friday at Little Paddocks, the home of Letitia Blacklock. Unable to resist, the group gather at the house at the appointed time, when the lights go out and a gun is fired. Enter Miss Marple, who must unravel a complex series of relationships and events to solve the mystery of the killer...

Years later, she has brought the Count’s son up as her own and he and his elder brother, unaware of their relationship, are rivals for the beautiful Leonora. Jealousy, revenge, love and hate collide as the opera crashes towards its unstoppable conclusion. This restaging from director Martin Lloyd-Evans conjures up all the superstition and fearfulness of the Dark Ages. The stark, brooding lines of the set stand in contrast to the blood and thunder of Verdi’s music, providing a majestic backdrop for a cast and chorus of over 50. Full-blooded opera at its grandest, Verdi’s score is packed with a dizzying succession of familiar melodies, from the thrilling Anvil Chorus and Manrico’s stirring ‘Di quella pira’ to the spinetingling Miserere. The cast features some of the UK’s finest singers, including Roland Wood, Anne Mason and Matthew Best, leading British soprano Claire Rutter and renowned Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones. Tobias Ringborg conducts. Thu & Sat 7.30pm

We’ll be trying to find the next generation of the world’s theatre technicians, filmmakers and young journalists interested in dance, theatre, music and art. Coronation Anthems: Zadok the Priest My heart is inditing Purcell Ode to St Cecilia John Butt Director Originally composed for the coronation of George II in 1727, Handel’s coronation anthems Zadok the Priest and My heart is inditing are among his best-loved choral pieces. With the splendour of trumpets and drums and their rousing beginnings, we hear Handel at his most extroverted. The Ode to St Cecilia is one of Henry Purcell’s largest choral works and presents a fitting tribute to the patron saint of music. Purcell makes use of a number of dance forms, typifying the elegance and poise that were to become hallmarks of the English baroque.

Andante Cantabile, Op.11 Chamber Symphony No.1 in C minor Op.110a (arr. Barshai) Shostakovich Two Pieces, Op.11 Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings in C major, Op.48 Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky: two musical giants who painted their turbulent inner lives onto musical canvasses with irrepressible power. Tchaikovsky’s dramatic themes, intense rhythms, and soaring, dancelike melodies make an immediate connection with audiences. His Andante Cantabile and the Serenade for Strings are powerful, moving works that come straight from the heart. Written during a visit to war-torn Dresden, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony is a gripping portrayal of the brutality of conflict. Its jagged, dynamic rhythms in the central sections are contrasted by elegiac outer movements that never fail to move the listener.

Nicola Benedetti Italy and The Four Seasons Nicola Benedetti, one of the world’s most beloved classical violinists, returns to the Music Hall with a dynamic programme of music inspired by the spirit of Italy. Performing with a first class ensemble of musicians, this concert includes two seminal and cherished works from the classical repertoire - Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence. These two works have enjoyed unparalleled popularity with the public as well as profound reverence amongst musicians and connoisseurs for centuries. Described by “The Times’ as a “risk-taking performer”, Nicola has now established herself as one of classical music’s most prominent violinists, collaborating with major orchestras all over the world. She is credited with broadening the appeal of classical music to young and new audiences through her extensive education work and appearances at events such the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and iTunes Festival. 1pm JAMES KELMAN is the most influential Scottish writer of his generation. He’s a Booker Prize winner (for How Late it was, How Late), an internationally renowned novelist and short story writer, dramatist, essayist and polemicist who has drawn comparisons with Beckett and Kafka. Outspoken and politically engaged, he brings an uncompromising integrity to everything he does. But the work is grounded in a profound humanity, shot through with a dark (and recognisably Glaswegian) sense of humour. Hearing him read his own work is an unforgettable experience.

AIDAN O’ROURKE Aidan O’Rourke Is both a “dazzling fiddler” (Scotland on Sunday), and an “unfailingly strong and imaginative” composer (The List). He stands at the centre of the modern Scottish folk music revival and in February 2014 he was named ‘Musician of the Year’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
APA’s Associate Artist Programme 2015
WE’RE BRINGING TWO OF THE UK’S MOST EXCITING ARTISTS TO ABERDEEN AND THEY WANT TO WORK WITH YOU!
JASON SINGH Jason Singh is a musician, composer, sound artist and workshop facilitator. Known predominately for his work as a vocal sculptor and beatboxer, Singh’s sound and music output is generated through his ongoing exploration of the human voice and its application to art, music technology, education, nature and the environment.
ABOUT The Associate Artist Programme is a new initiative for APA, inviting artists to work in residence at the Music Hall and The Lemon Tree. The programme seeks to unite local musicians/composers/creatives from different artforms with the artists with the aim of nurturing and developing Aberdeen’s creative scene; while also supporting the artists in developing their own practice and creating new work. The theme for the 2015 residencies is CONNECT - exploring all things that attach, hook up, relate, marry, unite and meld with other things, people or places, using sound, language and performance.
GET INVOLVED The project is just getting underway now and the artists want to hear from you! Would you like to be involved? How could the artists support you?
“There’s only one type of music and that’s good music, no matter what genre it is.”
Supported by
and this year we are joined by two diametrically different artists, Aidan O’Rourke and Jason Singh to help us investigate the idea of CONNECT with the local community.
If you are interested in getting involved, email Nicola Henderson on nicolacgsmith@hotmail.com

Ruby Wax
Paul Merton’s Impro Chums
Reginald D Hunter
An Evening with
Sane New World Starting out as an actor at the RSC, Ruby Wax went on to write and perform in her own television shows and script edited Absolutely Fabulous. More recently she has also become a mental health campaigner and gained a Masters degree in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy from Oxford University. This show is based on her critically acclaimed book Sane New World which helps us understand why we sabotage our sanity with our own thinking. It shows us how to rewire our thinking to find calm in a frenetic world and how to become the master, not the slave, of our own minds. This show is your passport to saner living. She might not be sane herself but she does a pretty good imitation.
Paul Merton, one of the UK’s best-loved performers, and his world renowned Impro Chums: Mike McShane, Lee Simpson, Richard Vranch and Suki Webster will create a new and unique comedy show, based entirely on suggestions from the audience, their own finely honed improvisational skills and an almost manic compulsion to show off. Special guests may also be joining them including: Niall Ashdown, Andy Smart and Steve Steen*. *4 performers will join Paul on each performance.
David Sedaris
“This is comedy of a rare scope” Times Reginald D Hunter returns to the UK in 2015 with a brand new tour following a hugely successful year filming and performing around the world. Having appeared at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Sydney Opera House Gala in Australia, Reginald then made his debut in New Zealand. He then moved closer to home with his first tour of mainland Europe before travelling back to his birthplace in America to film Reginald D Hunter’s Songs Of The South, a three part BBC2 series, which is due for transmission in early 2015.
You may have heard him on the hugely popular BBC Radio 4 series Meet David Sedaris or you might be one of the millions worldwide who have read one of his many books. After three sell-out runs in London, two sell-out Edinburgh Fringe Festival stints and a sellout UK 2014 tour; Sedaris will once again set out across the UK on tour. We’re delighted to announce he’s coming to Aberdeen for what is sure to be a very popular night and one of the literary events of the year in the city. “David Sedaris isn’t a stand-up, or even much of a showman. But in his own dry and unassuming way, he’s one of the finest comic talents currently living on this planet.” The Guardian Doors 6pm/Show time 7.30pm

First stand-up tour in 4 years, the punslinger returns with lots of new jokes, silly songs and twitchy dancing. Joke, joke, joke. Prop, prop, prop. Song, song, song. (Sorry the laptop’s jammed.) It’s time to put the satire on hold and watch a grown man act the goat. Come along and enjoy the nonsense. WARNING: This show will contain wobbly props, one reference to a panda and a song about getting water in your ear after you’ve been swimming. “Vine is a supreme punmeister.” Time Out “Must-see manic hilarity.” ★★★★★ Edinburgh Reporter

Noel Fielding
Best known for his live performances and tours Dandelion Mind, Tinselworm, Bewilderness and Part Troll, Bill Bailey’s television work has included his own shows like Bill Bailey’s Birdwatching Bonanza, Baboons With Bill Bailey and Bill Bailey’s Jungle Hero, as well as captaining a team on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, a starring role in the award-winning Black Books and guest appearances in Spaced, Doctor Who, QI, Jo Brand’s Big Splash and many others. He has appeared at the O2 for Channel 4’s Comedy Gala and followed that with an appearance as Farmer Macreadie in Emma Thompson’s feature film, Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang.
She’s won a British Comedy Award, stormed Live at the Apollo, Russell Howard’s Good News, Sunday Night at the Palladium, and made a BAFTA nominated film - all without moving her lips. This year, Nina will create a new show each night by plucking inspiration from the audience. Strap into the mask as Nina gets in your face. With the help of Monkey and a bag of tricks, truly anything can happen in this unmissable improvised adventure of hilarious witchery. “Uproariously hilarious” The Scotsman “Put simply, Nina Conti is a genius” Mirror “A gem… funny, poignant, novel” Guardian
Critically acclaimed stand-up comedian, Celebrity Juice regular, star of BBC2’s Hebburn, and the man who once got pizza delivered to a moving train embarks on his biggest stand-up tour yet! Following sell-out runs of his last three UK tours, Chris is back with a brand new show for 2015. Join him as he explores getting older, finding yourself, taking responsibility, realising you are no longer a child and all of the other terrifying realisations that come with being dragged kicking and screaming into modern adulthood. “A mainstream hit, a cult favourite or almost anything in-between” Sunday Times
Noel Fielding (The Mighty Boosh, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Luxury Comedy) is embarking on his first live tour in five years. Expect a magical mix of Noel’s unique brand of stand up comedy, live animation, music and some of Fielding’s best known TV characters (such as The Moon and Fantasy Man). Fielding’s comedy has seen him perform in venues all over the world, win numerous awards and appear on TV shows such as Michael Mcintyre’s Roadshow, Big Fat Quiz Of The Year and QI. There will also be muscular support from the loose stylings of Mike Fielding (Naboo/ Smooth) and the physical lunacy of Tom Meeton (The Mighty Boosh/ Oram & Meeton).
