Sunset Boulevard
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award®-winning masterpiece Sunset Boulevard, stars Ria Jones, who received standing ovations every night when performing the role at the London Coliseum, as Norma Desmond and Strictly Come Dancing’s Danny Mac as Joe Gillis. One of the all-time great musicals, Sunset Boulevard is a compelling story of romance and obsession, based on Billy Wilder’s legendary film, with Don Black and Christopher Hampton’s wonderful book and lyrics. In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded silent-screen goddess Norma Desmond lives in a fantasy world. Joe becomes trapped in a claustrophobic world until his love for another woman leads him to try and break free, with dramatic consequences. With its much-loved score (including Sunset Boulevard, With One Look, The Greatest Star Of All and The Perfect Year) performed with full orchestra, this “MAJESTIC, MESMERIZING AND TEASINGLY SEDUCTIVE!” (The Evening Standard) production promises to be a spectacular evening. This acclaimed new production of Ibsen’s masterpiece Hedda Gabler comes to His Majesty’s Theatre following a sold out run at the National Theatre. Adapted by Olivier Award-winning playwright Patrick Marber (Closer, Three Days in the Country) and directed by Olivier and Tony Award®-winner Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge), who made his National Theatre debut with this bold and modern new production. Lizzy Watts plays the title role of the free-spirited Hedda Gabler, one of the greatest dramatic parts in theatre and regarded as the female Hamlet.

Come to Where I’m From
Since 2010 writers from across the UK have returned to their home towns to pen plays about the places that shaped them. At theatres from Bristol to Belfast, Cardiff to Coventry and Nottingham to Newcastle, these plays have been performed by the playwrights themselves, coming home to tell their tale. Now Come To Where I’m From visits Aberdeen to invite four of the Granite City’s finest playwrights – Lesley Hart, Neil Cargil, Morna Young and Shane Strachen - to join this celebrated nationwide project by performing their own short plays about their home. 130 previous Come To Where I’m From plays are available in audio form, for free, on the App Store.
“ A reminder of the enormous tug that place has on us all.” The Guardian

Our current New Voices programme focuses on a sense of place as we partner with Paines Plough, to present Come To Where I’m From - four new short plays set against the backdrop of the Northeast. Our famous Scratch Nights go from strength to strength and this time we’re calling for new work inspired by the theme trick or treat. Through our new producing umbrella – Freshly Squeezed Productions – we’ve teamed up with Ross Mackay and The Uncertainty Principle to create a brand new show for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe - Velvet Evening Séance. A young Victorian medium accused of a terrible crime plunges into the depths of his own conscience in a tale where death is only the beginning.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden, The Fairy’s Kiss was first brought to the stage by renowned Scottish choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan, adding a dark edge to an already unsettling tale. Now, 25 years after MacMillan’s death, it is recreated with stunning new sets and costumes. The Rite of Spring was widely acclaimed following its 2013 performance at the Edinburgh International Festival. Feel the raw energy of the score – and the anguish of moral conflict, brought to an end through violent sacrifice.

DANCE
NEW TO SEASON

Christopher Bruce’s masterpiece, Ghost Dances, is the most popular work in Rambert’s history. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death – in the form of the iconic “ghost dancers” – interrupts the lives of a series of ordinary people. Created as a response to political oppression in South America, it uses imagery from the Day of the Dead and bewitching traditional music to create a moving, intensely human work. Also on the programme from Britain’s national dance company is a new dance theatre creation by Ben Duke, inspired by the music and spirit of Nina Simone, and an all-action work by internationally acclaimed choreographer Andonis Foniadakis. With live music throughout from the Rambert Orchestra, it’s a memorable evening of world class dance.

Thursday 2 & Saturday 4 November SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS VERDI’S
La traviata
Passionate, flamboyant, gripping: Sir David McVicar’s La traviata has been in high demand worldwide since its Scottish Opera premiere in 2008. Set in the demi-monde of 1880s Paris, this stunning show is designed with sumptuous period style by Tanya McCallin. With his characteristic eye for detail, McVicar’s production gets to the core of Violetta and Alfredo’s doomed love affair – finding a heartbreakingly human story in the midst of a hedonistic world where both the rich and the wretched have their fun. Verdi’s magnificent score sweeps the characters through their every shifting mood – from the wildly dramatic to the most tender of moments. Russian-Dutch soprano Gulnara Shafigullina, recently Violetta at the Mariinsky, heads a cast of international talent also including multi-award-winning Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen and British baritone Stephen Gadd. David Parry (Carmen 2016) conducts. Revival of the 2008 co-production with Welsh National Opera, Gran Teatre del Liceu & Teatro Real, Madrid.

Thursday 10 & Saturday 12 May 2018 SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS TCHAIKOVSKY’S
Eugene Onegin
New production Supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle Tchaikovsky and Pushkin: two of Russia’s greatest artists come together in this sweeping tale of unfulfilled love. A lovesick young girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends. Director Oliver Mears (The Royal Opera) teams up with awardwinning designer Annemarie Woods, setting this hopelessly romantic opera in a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Tchaikovsky’s soaring score, not heard on Scottish Opera’s main stage since 1993, is the most radiant of Russian lyric operas. Dramatic and expressive, it captures perfectly the desperation and raw emotion of Pushkin’s masterpiece. Natalya Romaniw (Rusalka 2016), fast making a name for herself in the Russian repertoire, sings Tatyana. Samuel Dale Johnson (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) is Onegin. Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts. BOOK FOR BOTH LA TRAVIATA AND EUGENE ONEGIN

Rarely is classical music as cheerful as in Brahms’ Serenade No 2, with its sunny, happy nature and miraculous treatment of the woodwinds. This joyful radiance is continued with unstoppable momentum in Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony. Richard Egarr has developed a reputation to make familiar things fresh and exciting, informed by scholarship and thoughtful musical analysis. Poet, lover, dreamer, radical: Robert Schumann was the ultimate Romantic. So we’re thrilled to welcome Sir Roger Norrington, a conductor who’s devoted his career to making this music sound fresh, passionate and new. Today, the joyous fanfares of the Spring symphony and the bubbling high spirits of the Overture, Scherzo and Finale launch us on a fantastic journey – while the RSNO’s very own Christopher Hart raises the roof in Haydn’s playful - and irresistibly catchy - Trumpet Concerto.
Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations is a musical portrait gallery of his “friends pictured within” and in ‘Nimrod’ has one of the most memorable moments in all of British music. Grieg’s Holberg Suite, a mock-Baroque tribute to an 18th century poet, has a surprisingly big heart, too. Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, meanwhile, enshrines the spirit of a great violinist in his lusciously romantic concerto, played by Roman Simovic. John Wilson conducts.

This concert ranges widely – from Rebel’s Les Élémens, an eighteenth-century work famed for its dramatic evocation of creation, to Martinu’s small-scale concerto – his Viola Rhapsody. Between them, we hear the Biblical Songs of Dvorák; which stand testament to his lyric genius and profound Christian faith. The concert concludes with Haydn’s Symphony No 96, sometimes known as ‘The Miracle’ after an accident involving a falling chandelier.
“Today I saw 16 swans. God, what beauty!” A vision of natural wonder inspired the tune that crowns Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony – and once heard, it’s never forgotten. Rising British conductor Jamie Phillips will charge every note with freshness and awe. But before that, the 22-year old Mozart takes Paris by storm and the one and only Ning Feng pours out his heart in the sumptuous Violin Concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the Viennese genius who defined the “Hollywood sound”.

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique Symphony Amidst all the myths and mysteries that surround Tchaikovsky’s final masterpiece, one thing’s clear: the melodic inspiration and emotional honesty of this glorious (but heartbreaking) music. Martyn Brabbins opens the concert in an altogether more languid world of Debussy’s Prélude à l’aprèsmidi d’un faune, and in between, there’s the first really great piano concerto by Mozart, featuring soloist Arthur Jussen. 3pm

Beethoven ‘Emperor’ Concerto
Few pianists truly deserve the epithet ‘great’ but Elisabeth Leonskaja is surely one of them. Now in her seventies, she continues to cast a spell over audiences, especially in her interpretations of Beethoven. Clemens Schuldt acknowledges Leonskaja’s heritage with two hugely popular symphonies by the greatest Soviet composers. The shenanigans and wit of Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ contrast starkly with the intense tragedy unleashed by Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony. 7.30pm

Saltfishforty & Basco
STEPPING OUT
To the uninitiated, Saltfishforty are Douglas Montgomery (fiddle/viola) and Brian Cromarty (guitar/mandola/vocals), a duo hailing from Orkney. To those who are familiar with this powerhouse of a partnership, they are quite simply one of the best live acts on the folk scene. With their focus on Orkney music taking in traditional, contemporary and original material, boldly cross-fertilised with influences from Americana to East European folk, plus a highoctane whiff of heavy metal, there is simply no-one else like Saltfishforty. They will be joined for this Northern Arc session by Basco, a fiddle-scraping, box-belting, cittern-smacking folk/roots band with members from Denmark, Sweden and Australia. Their music is complex and varied, from hard hitting, high-speed reels full of rosin dust and sweat, through sweet and melancholy tunes that tell of loves won and lost, of fitful fever-dreams of fractal complexity and fascinating texture, to songs that when you come down to it, are really just about sex.

Greg Davies
David Baddiel

Stewart Lee
Following a sold out run at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory and two critically-acclaimed West End runs, David Baddiel takes his Olivier-nominated oneman show to theatres nationwide. My Family: Not the Sitcom is a show about memory, ageing, infidelity, dysfunctional relatives, moral policing on social media, golf, and gay cats. A massively disrespectful celebration of the lives of David Baddiel’s late sex-mad mother, Sarah, and dementia-ridden father, Colin. Come and be offended on David’s behalf! “ Baddiel launches himself into the Louis CK league of no-holds-barred comedy”HHHHH Metro
No, really out there and this time he hasn’t just forgotten his keys. He’s holding up the mirror of truth to society, and he can see right through it, which means its probably just a window. He will also be scaling the heights of fashion at the risk of falling into a terrible cravat. Milton will be talking about his life so far - the ups, the downs and why buying his own see-saw was the best decision he ever made. But perhaps he should give all this up and seek the highest office in the land - but how do you get a desk and a swivel chair up a mountain? Oh and now he wants to be Prime Minister too. Can we do worse than the politicians we already have? Yes we can!
After four years writing and performing his TV show Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, Content Provider is Stewart’s first brand new full length show since the award-winning Carpet Remnant World. “ The most consistently funny show of his brilliant career … I laughed till it hurt.” The Times “ Characteristically twisty and frequently brilliant” The Guardian “Venomously funny” Standard “ The delusional ravings of a man who has lost his way in the world” Mail on Sunday Age guidance: 16+
