Kathleen Jamie is one of Scotland’s finest living poets, at a time when that is really saying a great deal. (Among a hugely talented generation, she’s up there with the best of them). She is also an award-winning essayist and travel writer - her recent prose books are exquisite meditations on landscape and the natural world - and she is Professor in Creative Writing at the University of Stirling. Her most recent awards are the Costa Poetry Prize for her collection The Overhaul, and the Orion Book Award for her prose work Sightlines. Her latest collection is The Bonniest Companie.

Ian Rankin is one of Scotland’s most successful novelists ever! He is the author of almost 40 internationally bestselling books, many featuring the iconic detective figure Inspector John Rebus - on the go now for 30 years. Ten of the Rebus books were adapted for television, starring first John Hannah then Ken Stott. The books epitomise what has come to be known as Tartan Noir, and like his great Scandinavian counterparts they transcend genre and are rich in social and political comment. His latest book - the 21st featuring Rebus - is Rather Be the Devil.

James Robertson is one of Scotland’s finest novelists who has produced a body of work which is wide in its historical sweep but rich in detail and sharply observed. He tackles big themes - slavery in Joseph Knight, the Lockerbie bombing in in The Professor of Truth, 60 years of social and political change in Scotland in And The Land Lay Still. By contrast, his latest book, To Be Continued… is a surreal and playful romp. He is also a poet and short story writer and has published several collections, many in Scots, as well as books for children. His many awards include the Saltire Prize, which he has won twice.

Louise Welsh is an award-winning novelist, renowned for her exquisitely-crafted psychological University, and she is a relaxed and entertaining reader of her own work, from her first book, The Cutting Room to her most recent, A Lovely Way to Burn. Awards include the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award, the John Creasey Memorial Dagger and the Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Award. She has written libretti for Scottish Opera - Ghost Patrol and The Devil Inside, as well as a number of plays for stage. She is currently Professor in Creative Writing at Glasgow.

Funbox Underwater Adventure

Michael Rosen’s award-winning book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is brought vividly and noisily to the stage in director Sally Cookson’s fun-filled adaptation set to Benji Bower’s versatile lively score. Join our intrepid family of adventurers and their musical dog on their quest to find a bear; as they wade through the gigantic swishy swashy grass, the splishy splashy river and the thick oozy, squelchy mud! Expect catchy songs, interactive scenes and plenty of hands-on adventure – plus a few special surprises!

Funbox, formerly the stars of the Singing Kettle, will be performing their brand new show Underwater Adventure. Join Anya, Kevin and Gary on their quest to find all the lost keys under the sea, while the Funsters discover a barrier reef and Bonzo - the lovable Sea Dog - battles a shark! Familiar favourites like Over the Irish Sea and Hole at the Bottom of the Sea and Eely Ally Oh as well as brand new songs, will entertain and enthral kids of all ages – from nought to ninety! Dress up, join in the fun and come dressed as a sea creature, King Neptune or a Mermaid and have a Whale of a time! There will even be the chance for some lucky people to help out on stage too!

Supported by The Scottish Opera Syndicate & Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ appeal Scottish Opera returns to His Majesty’s Theatre with a new production of Puccini’s classic, La bohème. Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe set the romance amidst the jumble of Paris’s famous flea markets. Inspired by the Jazz Age of Josephine Baker, this production will be full of their trademark colour, character and style. Puccini’s sublime score never fails to cast its spell – his lush orchestration and exquisite vocal lines combine in some of the most ravishing music in opera. Hye-Youn Lee (Madama Butterfly 2014) is the fated Mimì and Luis Gomes, winner of 2015’s Grand Prize at the Verbier Festival Academy and a Covent Garden regular, is Rodolfo. Scottish Opera’s Head of Music Derek Clark conducts.

Elgar’s Second Symphony is an unforgettable journey into the composer’s soul, an emotional autobiography on a par with Mahler’s great symphonies. It’s paired with George Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad, performed to mark the 100th anniversary of its composer’s death on the Somme, and a new viola concerto from Scotland’s very own Sir James MacMillan.

Dramatic, passionate, heart-wrenchingly expressive: all words that can be used to describe the music of both Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. Join the RSNO for two of their most enjoyable works – Prokofiev’s lyrical Violin Concerto No2 performed by Sergei Krylov, and Tchaikovsky’s moody Pathétique Symphony. The concert begins with Scriabin’s Rêverie, a true gem of orchestral writing.

His Majesty’s Theatre Parking and wheelchair access

Car parking is available at a special reduced rate at Bon Accord Harriet Street car park. Further parking available at Denburn car park and Chapel Street (multi-storey). There is disabled parking on Union Terrace and outside Aberdeen Art Gallery on Schoolhill. Level access is available through the Donald Entrance on Rosemount Viaduct. There is also a drop-off point in front of the theatre.

Sound enhancement

There is an infra-red system for hearing impaired customers. Headsets for volume control or necklace-type receivers (for use with hearing aids) are available from customer service staff in the foyer.

Access

Our venues are designed to be as accessible as possible. We have an access guide with full details of all facilities available online, by email or at our box offices. Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome in our venues, and our box offices are fitted with induction loop systems. Latecomers

The performance spaces open half an hour before the start time; if you are late, you will have to wait to be seated at an appropriate point of the performance, which may be up to the interval.

Refreshments

The Lemon Tree provides refreshments before, during and after performances both in the Lounge and the Studio. However the bar may be closed throughout a performance at the performers’ request. Kate’s Bar is located on the first floor next to The Lemon Tree Studio and is open before performances and during intervals for drinks.

The closest and most convenient car parking is available at Bon Accord Harriet Street and West North Street car parks. Street level access to The Lemon Tree is available via Shoe Lane by ringing the doorbell.

Certain performances are British Sign Language (BSL) interpreted and/or audio described. Seats are reserved for lip readers at the BSL performance and deaf customers for up to four weeks before the performance. Look out for these symbols in the brochure.

Public transport

We welcome all children of all ages, unless a specific performance has an age restriction. Children under two go free as long as they are seated on your knee! If children or babies disturb a performance, we can ask that you leave to be fair to other customers and the performers.

Captioned performances are similar to television subtitling. The actor’s words appear on a display unit (or screens) on or near the stage at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Speaker names, sound effects and offstage noises.

The restaurant is located upstairs from the Box Office in the Donald entrance. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers a la carte and pre-theatre menus with a strong focus on fresh and simple classic dishes. Drop in to the Café 1906 for coffee and cake, a light lunch or a snack. Reserve your restaurant table direct with the box office when buying HMT tickets or direct on 01224 641122.

If you are a student, under 16, over 60, disabled or companion, job seeking or a Young Scot you may be entitled to reduced price tickets – remember to ask. Standby tickets are subject to availability at £12 inc. bf for some HMT shows (maximum of two per booking, eligible concession holders only – can be withdrawn at any time). Please note, a valid I.D. (such as a student card) must be shown at the venue on request. CONCESSIONS

Restoration

£1.50 of the ticket cost for this show will go towards the APA Restoration Fund, the current priority of which is to improve the seating in our three venues Booking Fees – all prices within the brochure are inclusive of our booking fees. 10% on ticket price for Music Hall and The Lemon Tree and £2 for His Majesty’s Theatre.

Keep your tickets in a safe place

Once purchased, tickets are non-refundable but may sometimes be exchanged up to 24 hours before the date of the performance. Please put your tickets in a safe place! Lost tickets can only be reprinted on the night for reserved seated performances. Please note exchanges or ticket reprinting is subject to an admin fee of £2 per ticket (to a maximum £10 per booking).
