BILL KENWRIGHT PRESENTS
HMT Monday 20 - Saturday 25 March 2017
Blood Brothers BEST MUSICAL – ALL MAJOR AWARDS Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multiaward winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). Lyn Paul returns to the iconic role she has played many times in the West End, in fact she was the show’s final Mrs Johnstone when it closed at the Phoenix Theatre in 2012. Lyn also starred in Bill Kenwright’s tour of Cabaret with Will Young in 2013 and rose to fame as a member of the pop group New Seekers whose numerous number one hits include I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing which sold over 20 million copies. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and Tell Me It’s Not True.

The Crucible
One of the twentieth century’s landmark plays, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible stands as both a historical record and a political parable for our times. In a small 17th century New England town a children’s game has terrifying consequences as allegations of witchcraft break out. Quickly caught up in an unstoppable flow of paranoia, accusation and manipulation, the community is consumed by a climate of suspicion where no person is safe from its neighbour. An allegory of the chilling McCarthyism of American politics in the 1950’s, The Crucible also serves as a warning to future generations. Enter the world of sensationalism, hysteria and the power of celebrity that was the Salem Witch Trials and ask yourself how innocent we can really be as we stand by and watch a witch-hunt unfold. This bold new production of The Crucible starring Charlie Condou (Coronation Street), as the witch hunter, Reverend Hale and Victoria Yeates (Call the Midwife), the falsely accused Elizabeth Proctor, is directed by Douglas Rintoul, Artistic Director of the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch, and brings together music and movement.

The National Theatre’s internationally acclaimed production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time returns to Aberdeen in August 2017. Winner of 7 Olivier Awards and 5 Tony Awards® including ‘Best Play’, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time brings Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel to thrilling life on stage, adapted by two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens and directed by Olivier and Tony Award®winning director Marianne Elliott. Christopher, fifteen years old, has an extraordinary brain – exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. Jane Eyre Following a critically acclaimed season at the National Theatre, Jane Eyre will be coming to His Majesty’s Theatre in August 2017. This innovative re-imagining of Charlotte Brontë’s masterpiece is a collaboration between the National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic and is directed by Sally Cookson. The classic story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. This bold and dynamic production uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms. Kathleen Jamie
Ian Rankin
James Robertson
Louise Welsh
Kathleen Jamie is one of Scotland’s finest living poets, at a time when that is really saying a great deal. (Among a hugely talented generation, she’s up there with the best of them). She is also an award-winning essayist and travel writer - her recent prose books are exquisite meditations on landscape and the natural world - and she is Professor in Creative Writing at the University of Stirling. Her most recent awards are the Costa Poetry Prize for her collection The Overhaul, and the Orion Book Award for her prose work Sightlines. Her latest collection is The Bonniest Companie.
Ian Rankin is one of Scotland’s most successful novelists ever! He is the author of almost 40 internationally bestselling books, many featuring the iconic detective figure Inspector John Rebus - on the go now for 30 years. Ten of the Rebus books were adapted for television, starring first John Hannah then Ken Stott. The books epitomise what has come to be known as Tartan Noir, and like his great Scandinavian counterparts they transcend genre and are rich in social and political comment. His latest book - the 21st featuring Rebus - is Rather Be the Devil.
James Robertson is one of Scotland’s finest novelists who has produced a body of work which is wide in its historical sweep but rich in detail and sharply observed. He tackles big themes - slavery in Joseph Knight, the Lockerbie bombing in in The Professor of Truth, 60 years of social and political change in Scotland in And The Land Lay Still. By contrast, his latest book, To Be Continued… is a surreal and playful romp. He is also a poet and short story writer and has published several collections, many in Scots, as well as books for children. His many awards include the Saltire Prize, which he has won twice.
Louise Welsh is an award-winning novelist, renowned for her exquisitely-crafted psychological University, and she is a relaxed and entertaining reader of her own work, from her first book, The Cutting Room to her most recent, A Lovely Way to Burn. Awards include the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award, the John Creasey Memorial Dagger and the Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Award. She has written libretti for Scottish Opera - Ghost Patrol and The Devil Inside, as well as a number of plays for stage. She is currently Professor in Creative Writing at Glasgow.

Beethoven’s Eroica
Kicking off the evening with Dvorák’s lively Carnival Overture, this concert is one not to be missed. Featuring Vaughan Williams’ sublime Oboe Concerto played by RSNO Principal Oboe Adrian Wilson, and Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony: join Scotland’s National Orchestra for an evening of truly glorious music. Supported by Hedley G Wright. This concert is recommended by Classic FM.
Feast yourselves on performances by Director/Violinist Alexander Janiczek and Pianist Llyr Williams, as they tackle two magnificent concertos, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 4 and Beethoven’s mighty ‘Emperor’ Piano Concerto No 5.

Elgar’s Second Symphony
Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique
Elgar’s Second Symphony is an unforgettable journey into the composer’s soul, an emotional autobiography on a par with Mahler’s great symphonies. It’s paired with George Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad, performed to mark the 100th anniversary of its composer’s death on the Somme, and a new viola concerto from Scotland’s very own Sir James MacMillan.
Dramatic, passionate, heart-wrenchingly expressive: all words that can be used to describe the music of both Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky. Join the RSNO for two of their most enjoyable works – Prokofiev’s lyrical Violin Concerto No2 performed by Sergei Krylov, and Tchaikovsky’s moody Pathétique Symphony. The concert begins with Scriabin’s Rêverie, a true gem of orchestral writing.
