:NEW VOICES: :NEW TALENT: :NEW THEATRE: SILVER CITY STORIES
The main event of our New Voices strand of work this season is our two Silver City Stories projects. In Scotland, 2017 has been designated Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology and Silver City Stories is a city wide summer event that will showcase, celebrate and debate the history and heritage of Aberdeen and its people. Silver City Stories is being supported by Aberdeen City Council, The University of Aberdeen and Visit Aberdeenshire. Also look out for our two latest Scratch Nights which are now performed cabaret style in The Lemon Tree’s Lounge and showcase the very best in new writing, new music and new talent. In support of Climate Week in Aberdeen, 18 – 26 March, we are hosting a second Green Tease – an invitation to all to join in the discussion around the role of arts and culture in creating a sustainable future.

We are delighted to be presenting two performances as part of Aberdeen’s Silver City Stories celebrations.
Stolen Voices Stolen Voices is a project for community groups in Aberdeen which transforms overheard snippets of sounds and voices into a new musical composition and performance. The project is being created by artists Rebecca Collins and Johanna Linsley and will, through sound, encourage participants to re-imagine their immediate surroundings and the unstable borders between private and public within communities.
What Country Friends Is This? Did you know that the King’s Players, Shakespeare’s travelling theatre company, visited Aberdeen and Gdansk in Poland in 1601? Inspired by Viola’s story in Twelfth Night, What Country Friends Is This? is a brand new performance weaving together Shakespeare’s text with verbatim testimonies of migration and arrival.
The Stolen Voices and What Country Friends Is This? performances will take place at a venue to be confirmed in Aberdeen alongside other Silver City Stories performances over the weekend of Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July.

Scottish Ballet Dances Stravinsky Scotland’s national dance company returns with a programme inspired by the music of one of the most distinctive and influential composers of the 20th Century, Igor Stravinsky, performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. The Fairy’s Kiss (Le Baiser de La Fée), by renowned Scottish-born choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan, will feature stunning new set and costumes. The ballet is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale of a boy destined for immortality after being kissed at birth by a fairy. The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps), choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director Christopher Hampson, brings raw physicality to this programme. Featuring only three dancers, it tells the story of two brothers as they grow together, come of age and descend into a violent confrontation. “ This is an intense, uncompromising work that demands your attention.” HHHH The Scotsman on The Rite of Spring Recommended age: 12+ Tue & Wed 7.30pm

La bohème
New production
Supported by The Scottish Opera Syndicate & Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ appeal Scottish Opera returns to His Majesty’s Theatre with a new production of Puccini’s classic, La bohème. Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe set the romance amidst the jumble of Paris’s famous flea markets. Inspired by the Jazz Age of Josephine Baker, this production will be full of their trademark colour, character and style. Puccini’s sublime score never fails to cast its spell – his lush orchestration and exquisite vocal lines combine in some of the most ravishing music in opera. Hye-Youn Lee (Madama Butterfly 2014) is the fated Mimì and Luis Gomes, winner of 2015’s Grand Prize at the Verbier Festival Academy and a Covent Garden regular, is Rodolfo. Eugene Onegin
La traviata
NEW TO SEASON
New production
Passionate, flamboyant, gripping: Sir David McVicar’s La traviata has been in high demand worldwide since its Scottish Opera premiere in 2008. Set in the demi-monde of 1880s Paris, this stunning show is designed with sumptuous period style by Tanya McCallin. With his characteristic eye for detail, McVicar’s production gets to the core of Violetta and Alfredo’s doomed love affair – finding a heartbreakingly human story in the midst of a hedonistic world where both the rich and the wretched have their fun. Verdi’s magnificent score sweeps the characters through their every shifting mood – from the wildly dramatic to the most tender of moments. Russian-Dutch soprano Gulnara Shafigullina, recently Violetta at the Mariinsky, heads a cast of international talent also including multiaward-winning Dutch tenor Peter Gijsbertsen and British baritone Stephen Gadd (Le Villi 2017). David Parry (Carmen 2016) conducts.
Supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle Tchaikovsky and Pushkin: two of Russia’s greatest artists come together in this sweeping tale of unfulfilled love. A lovesick young girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends. Director Oliver Mears (The Royal Opera) teams up with award-winning designer Annemarie Woods, setting this hopelessly romantic opera in a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Tchaikovsky’s soaring score, not heard on Scottish Opera’s main stage since 1993, is the most radiant of Russian lyric operas. Dramatic and expressive, it captures perfectly the desperation and raw emotion of Pushkin’s masterpiece. Natalya Romaniw (Rusalka 2016), fast making a name for herself in the Russian repertoire, sings Tatyana. Samuel Dale Johnson (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) is Onegin. Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts.

Egarr conducts Beethoven & Brahms
Rarely is classical music as cheerful as in Brahms’ Serenade No 2, with its sunny, happy nature and miraculous treatment of the woodwinds. This joyful radiance is continued with unstoppable momentum in Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony. Richard Egarr has developed a reputation to make familiar things fresh and exciting, informed by scholarship and thoughtful musical analysis. Poet, lover, dreamer, radical: Robert Schumann was the ultimate Romantic. So we’re thrilled to welcome Sir Roger Norrington, a conductor who’s devoted his career to making this music sound fresh, passionate and new. Tonight, the joyous fanfares of the Spring symphony and the bubbling high spirits of the Overture, Scherzo and Finale launch us on a fantastic journey – while the RSNO’s very own Christopher Hart raises the roof in Haydn’s playful - and irresistibly catchy - Trumpet Concerto.
Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations is a musical portrait gallery of his “friends pictured within” and in ‘Nimrod’ has one of the most memorable moments in all of British music. Grieg’s Holberg Suite, a mock-Baroque tribute to an 18th century poet, has a surprisingly big heart, too. Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, meanwhile, enshrines the spirit of a great violinist in his lusciously romantic concerto, played by Roman Simovic. John Wilson conducts.

This concert ranges widely – from Rebel’s Les Élémens, an eighteenth-century work famed for its dramatic evocation of creation, to Martinu’s small-scale concerto – his Viola Rhapsody. Between them, we hear the Biblical Songs of Dvorák; stand testament to his lyric genius and profound Christian faith. The concert concludes with Haydn’s Symphony No 96, sometimes known as ‘The Miracle’ after an accident involving a falling chandelier.
“Today I saw 16 swans. God, what beauty!” A vision of natural wonder inspired the tune that crowns Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony – and once heard, it’s never forgotten. Rising British conductor Jamie Phillips will charge every note with freshness and awe. But before that, the 22-year old Mozart takes Paris by storm and the one and only Ning Feng pours out his heart in the sumptuous Violin Concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the Viennese genius who defined the “Hollywood sound”.

Beethoven ‘Emperor’ Concerto
Few pianists truly deserve the epithet ‘great’ but Elisabeth Leonskaja is surely one of them. Now in her seventies, she continues to cast a spell over audiences, especially in her interpretations of Beethoven. Clemens Schuldt acknowledges Leonskaja’s heritage with two hugely popular symphonies by the greatest Soviet composers. The shenanigans and wit of Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ contrast starkly with the intense tragedy unleashed by Shostakovich: powerful, moving stuff. 7.30pm
