QUADROPHENIA THE ICONIC ROCK OPERA Set in London and Brighton at the height of the Mod era, QUADROPHENIA is told through the eyes of Jimmy, a hedonistic style conscious teenager searching for a place to belong and a girl to love. Misunderstood by his parents and stuck in a dead end job, he sets off on a trip to Brighton that will change his life forever. This compelling coming of age story is brought to life in this original stage adaptation of the legendary album. The evocative world of sixties Britain provides a colourful backdrop to Jimmy’s journey. Pete Townshend’s stunning score pulsates with life and brilliantly captures the excitement of a nation on the brink of change. The album Quadrophenia was released by The Who in 1973 followed by the iconic film in 1979. Rolling Stone magazine and VH1 have named it one of the 100 Greatest Albums of all Time. An exhilarating theatrical experience for rebels and adolescents of all ages! Romantic. Lunatic. Tough Guy. Hypocrite. Can you see the real me? MUSIC, LYRICS & CONCEPT BY PETE TOWNSHEND. Stage adaptation by Jeff Young, John O’Hara & Tom Critchley.

This spectacular tale is brought to the stage by the team who brought you Sunset Song, along with award winning playwright Peter Arnott, promising a unique and exciting rendition of a Scottish classic to celebrate the year of homecoming.

Renowned for its versatility, and applauded for its exciting, award-winning repertoire, Scottish Ballet, Scotland’s national dance company, marks its 40th anniversary with a triple bill that captures perfectly the chic style of a company whose powerful athleticism and incredible personality continues to attract acclaim world-wide. Rubies, performed at His Majesty’s Theatre’s Royal Gala to celebrate it’s reopening in 2005, makes a welcome return to the Company’s repertoire for its 40th anniversary. Glamorous, witty and exciting, Rubies is one of Balanchine’s most delectable creations, featuring dazzling bejewelled costumes and the angular, jazz-tinged music of Igor Stravinsky. Workwithinwork is a new addition to Scottish Ballet’s repertoire. Performed to the beautiful slow-building arch of Berio’s Duetti for two violins, the choreography starts graceful and winding, before branching out in ever-increasing complexity. Making its much anticipated return to the stage is In Light and Shadow. Beginning with a delicate, reflective duet to the Aria from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, the piece twists and turns into a rich tapestry of explosive solos, duets and ensemble work set to Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite.

OUTSIDE IN EVENT Sat 24 October 4pm-5pm A fascinating insight into the production featuring excerpts of choreography, interviews, props and music, delivered from the stage by Scottish Ballet’s dancers and Artistic Team. Tickets £5 with £3 discount when buying tickets for the show at the same time.

THE ELIXIR OF LOVE Gaetano Donizetti A Scottish Opera première and a new production Sung in French with English Supertitles Giles Havergal’s hugely successful 1994 production was hailed as ‘a breath of fresh air’ (Metro) at its revival in 2000. This popular, funny and gorgeously colourful production promises once more to be a real treat for audiences this year. Donizetti’s score contains some of the loveliest melodies in opera. It’s also one of the funniest, thanks to its timeless themes of unrequited love, feminine manipulation, male gullibility and jealousy. Production supported by Scottish Opera’s ‘The Perfect Tonic’ Appeal.

LA BOHÈME Giacomo Puccini

Sung in Italian with English Supertitles. This iconic opera tells the story of the love affair between Mimì and the struggling writer Rodolfo. Tony awardwinning director Stewart Laing’s production presents a traditional tale in a meaningful contemporary context – the exciting modern art scene of 21st-century New York. When Rodolfo sees Mimì for the first time, they fall hopelessly in love – but the course of true love rarely runs smoothly. Encompassing dramatic passion and the pain of being young, poor and in love, Puccini’s whirling melodic score moves from revelry to romance as it carries the story toward its tragic conclusion. Young Irish soprano Celine Byrne and French tenor Avi Klemberg, make their Scottish Opera débuts. Nadine Livingston, recently announced as a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist, sings Musetta. Scottish Opera Music Director Francesco Corti conducts.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE T s e h , y d y h l s d s y.

Based on the novel by Jane Austen. Adapted for the stage by Simon Reade. Directed by Toby Frow. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife… Susan Hampshire plays the foolish and marriageobsessed Mrs Bennet, one of Jane Austen’s most delightfully ridiculous comic creations. Susan Hampshire is one of the UK’s most popular actresses. Her theatre credits include The King and I, The Circle, Relative Values and The Lady in the Van. Her work on television includes, most recently, Monarch of the Glen as well as The Forsyte Saga, Vanity Fair, The First Churchills, The Pallisers and The Barchester Chronicles. With its elegant Georgian settings and wonderful comic characters, Pride and Prejudice is perfect entertainment.

Following its smash hit tour of the United States, a hugely successful West End season at London’s Palace Theatre, and, of course, the original 2001 UK tour which smashed box-office records across the country, Bill Kenwright’s critically acclaimed production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman’s Whistle Down the Wind is set to thrill audiences once again. An extraordinary and uplifting tale about the transforming power of love, Whistle Down the Wind is based on the beloved sixties film starring Hayley Mills, and features numerous multi-award-winning songs, including Boyzone’s international hit No Matter What (which topped the UK charts for 6 weeks). Truly inspiring, Whistle Down the Wind shows how powerful love can be when the innocence of childhood collides with the cynicism of the adult world.

The Sacrifice: Three Interludes Mozart Piano Concerto No.22, Dvorák Symphony No.8 Piers Lane piano Petr Altrichter conductor Leading Czech conductor Petr Altrichter, Principal Conductor of the Prague Symphony Orchestra, brings his countryman Dvorák’s ebullient Eighth Symphony to Aberdeen. The sunniest of Dvorák’s symphonies, it is full of lilting melodies and infectious, folk dance inspired rhythms. Australian pianist Piers Lane joins the orchestra in Mozart’s delightfully good-humoured E flat concerto. This concert is part of sound, North East Scotland’s contemporary music festival.

But demand for the show has been so high that he’s decided to keep performing it… but this time without cycling from venue to venue. He’s obviously getting lazy.
