CONTEMPORARY DANCE PROGRAMMING IN ABERDEEN
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY 2012-13
Dance Sponsorship A4:Layout 1 21/02/2012 15:51 Page 2
PROJECT OUTLINE Aberdeen Performing Arts (APA) and Citymoves Dance Agency will present an ambitious, spectacular, world class programme of contemporary dance across the city in 2012-13. The aim of the programme is to bring the highest quality contemporary dance artists to Aberdeen, and to inspire, challenge and stimulate the population of the north east of Scotland. As well as promoting DanceLive, Aberdeen’s annual festival of contemporary dance, the two companies will promote a year round programme of fantastic contemporary at some of Aberdeen’s premier venues, including His Majesty’s Theatre and The Lemon Tree. The proposed programme of dance will work alongside the Scottish Government’s Get Scotland Dancing initiative which aims to encourage more people to get active and engage with dance. Our high profile programme of inspirational dance will help to engage the population with dance and a series of accompanying activities and performances will help support this programme, which forms a key element of the “Year of Creative Scotland”.
PROGRAMME Our programme of contemporary dance over the coming year will include local, national and international dancers, choreographers and companies of the highest quality and will feature work produced in Aberdeen by Aberdonian dancers and choreographers. The programme will include the following productions:
COME, BEEN AND GONE (MICHAEL CLARK COMPANY) - His Majesty’s Theatre, 5 June 2012 Michael Clark was born in Aberdeen, and after training at the Royal Ballet School, his company has toured the world and he has become one of the most highly regarded choreographers working today. Come, Been and Gone features the music of David Bowie, and has been critically acclaimed across the world since it was commissioned in 2009. In a rare return to his home city, the Michael Clark Company will present this fantastic work in the glorious surroundings of His Majesty’s Theatre. “…an outrageously gorgeous piece of modern dance.” The Observer
BIG DANCE ABERDEEN (CITYMOVES PRODUCTIONS) – His Majesty’s Theatre, 5 July 2012 Part of Get Scotland Dancing and Big Dance 2012, Big Dance Aberdeen is showcase of the best dance from Aberdeen. This gala show will involve both professional and community dancers, and showcase new works by Andy Howitt, Aberdeen Dance Collective, Fusion and feature special guest performers.
DANCELIVE 2012 The annual celebration of contemporary dance will take place in October 2012 and will feature a selection of newly commissioned work and some of the countries most exciting talents. The festival will open with a special new production by Citymoves and APA. Based on the film of the same name, 12 Angry Men, will feature twelve of Scotland’s best male dancers in a special show at His Majesty’s Theatre choreographed by Citymoves Artistic Director Andy Howitt. The production will feature a furious selection of short solos and duets, culminating in a spectacularly livid finale with all twelve dancers. This is a hugely exciting production and a major milestone in performing arts production for the city. DanceLive will also feature a showcase of local professional performers and choreographers in the East Coast Moves show at The Lemon Tree. Other companies expected to perform at the 2012 festival include David Hughes Dance, Rosie Kay and Company Chameleon, as well as the annual HMT performances by Scottish Ballet and Scottish Dance Theatre.
Further work at His Majesty’s Theatre * We are currently in discussions with The BalletBoyz and Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance with a view to both companies performing at HMT in early 2013. The BalletBoyz was founded by Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, and their newly formed troupe called The Talent features nine hugely exciting new dancing talents. The company has been featured in countless television and film productions, including the recent Channel 4 production of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Wayne McGregor CBE is a multi award winning choreographer, whose company Random Dance is resident company at London’s Sadlers Wells. Wayne is resident director at the Royal Ballet and will choreograph the Big Dance project in Trafalgar Square as part of the London Olympics in 2012.
Additional work * In addition to the above work, we will also programme three further high quality companies at The Lemon Tree, and present experimental work at the Citymoves Studio.
