FICKLE FRIENDS

start 7.30pm

Blessed with the same dedication to writing quirky anthems on their own terms as The 1975, the brittle icy synth flourishes of Chvrches and a new era indie pop IT girl in singer Natti Shiner, Fickle Friends have established themselves as the essential new British indie-pop band of 2018. They’ve played over 350 live shows together, been playlisted regularly on Radio 1 with an incredible string of singles including Brooklyn. £13.20 LOUNGE (standing)

STIFF LITTLE FINGERS

Stiff Little Fingers were formed in 1977 in Belfast, Ireland. Along with the likes of the Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Sham 69, Stranglers, et al – Stiff Little Fingers were at the forefront of the punk movement. They wrote initially about their own lives, growing up at the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, in songs like Suspect Device and Wasted Life. In November of ’77, they released those two songs on their own Rigid Digits label, and sent a copy to BBC Radio One DJ John Peel, who started playing it every night. £22 LOUNGE (standing)

PINACT

Scottish trio Pinact is back, but it’s hardly like they’ve been away. Relentlessly performing and honing their craft, Corrie Gillies (vocals, guitar), Lewis Reynolds (drums) were already a frantic on-stage force, before they added Jon Arbuthnot (bass) to bring out the razor-sharp melodies and unapologetically fuzzy guitars. The trio offers hooks by the dozen, artillery-style drumming and perfectly synchronised guitar interplay.

NINA NESBITT

doors 7.30pm

In a music industry that often doesn’t give you second chances, or time to settle into the artist you want to be, Nina Nesbitt’s found a way to not only make it work, but make it work for her. Rather than rush into making an album for the sake of it, she waited for the inspiration to strike and let it slowly take shape organically. “With an album I feel like it’s parallel to my life in a way – I was just trying to find out what I liked and what I was good at,” she says succinctly. What she’s good at is being an artist, but one that’s fully in control, i.e. the very best kind.

Heidi will be performing tonight with her trio which includes her husband John McCusker on violin, cittern and whistles and Innes White on guitar. All three of Väsen are instrumental virtuosos in their own right, and together they form a unique supernatural being. With origins deeply rooted in the forests and rich earth of the Swedish countryside, theirs is a tradition spiced with consummate playing skills. But this is more than just a traditional sound - there’s a playfulness to their music, a joyousness, and a delight in making exciting new arrangements of centuries-old tunes, and new originals inspired by the tradition. Rock, jazz, traditional, and classical influences weave together, making music that’s beautiful but never cloying. Another breathtaking, unique collaboration in our latest Northern Arc session.

Half Way Rock

6pm FREE (ticketed)

Half-Way Rock: a fusion of the immediacy of live stage performance with the intimacy of radio drama. Marcail sees the Half-Way Rock as nothing more than a resting place on the Aberdeenshire coast until the sounds of the waves, wind and rain one day appear to her as voices, calls for help, final words long lost among the depths.
But why her; why now? An answer comes only when she finds herself precariously perched thousands of feet above an abyss on the Half-Way Rock’s mirror-image on the other side of the North Sea: the Kjeragbolten.
This time, the phantom words come from the Draugr - spirits of those lost at sea, human forms with heads of seaweed, and suddenly the voices make sense. Half Way Rock is a mixed-media play by Neil Cargill in collaboration with sound designer Simon James which intertwines voices, sounds and music to create a mesmerising narrative. Join us for this work in progress sharing and find out more about the real life stories associated with Scotland’s Northeast coast that have inspired and informed Half Way Rock.

HOW MUCH?

We’ve printed the whole price of ticket in the brochure, this includes the booking fee (the only extra you’ll have to pay for is postage, but why not print your own at home?) – there could well be discounts for students, children, over 60s or APA Friends – just ask or check online.

DO I SIT OR STAND?

A bit of both – we try and create the right atmosphere for each gig, some will have seats, some won’t – we’ve tried to list it where we can here. If it says ‘doors’ then that’s when the doors open and you get inside for a drink. If it says ‘start’ that’s when the show starts. Some shows have support acts, we can’t always confirm this until nearer the time and ‘start’ can mean the start of the support act, not the main act

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE?

All ages are welcome, but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult, and under 18s can’t be near the bars.
