HMT’s marvellous 2009 theatre programme was supported with a range of additional activities, from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang musical workshops to a host of insightful post show chats. School groups took part in workshops with cast members from the Silver Darlings, Blood Brothers and West Side Story and there was also an opportunity for teachers with a workshop led by The Steamie director Alison Pebbles. More than 1300 people also took part in our theatre tours and this year we awoke the spirits with two very spooky ghost tours. The Lemon Tree hosted the Puppet Animation Festival, offered colleges and schools workshop opportunities with Vox Motus and a masterclass with the musicians of the International Guitar Night. Creative Kids has worked with hundreds of young people during Saturday lunch times, our Lemon Tree Outreach Youth Theatre group Take This made a short film as well as devising a piece of theatre and to top it off we also took a group of young people to perform street theatre in Regensburg!

A highlight in the Music Hall calendar was a wonderful pre-show talk with classical musician Nicola Benedetti and members of the Philharmonia Orchestra. If that wasn’t enough we established three new groups! From our sell-out singing workshops we formed the APA Studio Singers, APA young person’s forum and are currently rehearsing a newly-formed APA Young Actors Company.
With the New Year brings a new name……….. The education department will now be called CREATIVE LEARNING and we hope to top last year’s programme, with an even more diverse and exciting range of activities across all three of our venues in 2010. So come along, explore your creativity and be inspired.

MUSIC See it, hear it, feel it, sing it... How YOUR voice WORKS is a one-day event at the Music Hall on Sunday, May 9, filled with try-them-for-yourself techniques, practice tools and the latest information on finding and using your voice. “The warm up was amazing: my voice came out of me with ease and clarity...it felt as if someone else was singing!” It will be led by voice experts Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher of Vocal Process, the voice training company that is revolutionising the way singing is taught. Gillyanne is an internationally renowned voice trainer and researcher, and author of the bestselling book Singing and the Actor and Jeremy is a vocal coach, musical director and prize-winning accompanist, and co-author of Successful Singing Auditions. The event will be held in the Music Hall’s Round Room, from 10am-4.30pm and costs £65 per person (£58.50 concession), booked through Aberdeen Box Office.
DANCE New insights into a classic tale A Scottish Ballet event, Romeo and Juliet Unlocked, will offer secondary pupils the chance to cover four curricular areas: English, drama, dance and music. This project examines the text, dramatic themes, orchestral score and movement language within the ballet, with specialistled workshops. Aligned closely with A Curriculum for Excellence, Romeo and Juliet Unlocked is aimed at S1-S3 pupils and is offered in subsidised packages of one to three days. Come and sing with the RSNO! Scotland’s national orchestra take to the road in March to present a packed programme of concerts, workshops and activities throughout the North-east (more info available at www.rsno.org.uk). On Saturday, March 6, they are looking for singers old and young to join them for a workshop from 10am to 4.30pm, followed by a concert performance from 6pm to 7pm in AECC. Music will include O Fortuna from Carmina Burana and Va pensiero (The Prisoner’s Chorus) from Verdi’s opera Nabucco plus a celebratory piece written especially for the occasion! Learn from the best Budding dancers will have the chance to learn from one of the leading contemporary dance companies in the country. When they bring their latest production to His Majesty’s Theatre, the Rambert Dance Company will stage three FREE workshops – one for adults, one for young people and another for teachers. The first will be for those aged over 18, with some dance experience, in the HMT studio on Friday, February 26 from 4.30pm to 6pm and will include a contemporary technique warm up followed by the chance to learn choreography from Rambert’s existing repertoire. Then, it’s the turn of the 14-18 year olds to get the chance to be creative while gaining a deeper understanding of Rambert’s work in a workshop on stage at HMT from 10.30am to noon, Saturday, February 27. Also on Saturday there will be a three-hour Teachers CPD workshop at The Lemon Tree Studio from 10am to help teachers learn new skills and develop confidence in teaching contemporary dance in school. Writers and Actors Collaboration Aberdeen-based WACtheatre meets every Wednesday at HMT to read plays written by local writers, to give playwrights a chance to hear their work read aloud and give actors a chance to become involved in new productions. Aberdeen Performing Arts has the perfect all-round package at The Lemon Tree every Saturday from 12.30pm to 2pm with activities to inspire the kids, a relaxing lunch and live traditional music by Scottish Culture and Traditions. At Creative Kids, youngsters aged from five-12, are occupied and entertained with free activities such as face-painting and craft making all provided by APA’s Creative Learning and Participation team. And after lunch, why not take the family to see Pobby and Dingan on Saturday, March 20, at 2.30pm? Based on the novella by Ben Rice, adapted by Rob Evans and presented by Catherine Wheels, an award-wining Scottish children’s theatre company formed in 1999.
New plays for teens The National Theatre of Scotland have been very busy with their Transform project at Dyce Academy and this year will be returning to the Lemon Tree with two new plays written for young people. Awardwining author for teenagers, Catherine Forde, has penned her first ever play Empty, which will be presented alongside celebrated Scottish playwright Douglas Maxwell’s Miracle Man. Empty will be staged at 7pm on Friday, April 2, and Miracle Man at 7pm on Saturday, April 3.
