CINDERELLA

Conceived by: Ashley Page & Antony McDonald Music: Sergei Prokofiev Artistic Director Ashley Page’s spectacular version of Cinderella, one of Scottish Ballet’s most popular productions, returns to the stage this winter. Tormented by her stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella is lost and lonely, until a simple act of kindness summons her Fairy Godmother who sends her on a magical journey to find happiness. Showcasing sumptuous designs from award-winning designer Antony McDonald, this vivid reworking of the much-loved fairytale is transported to a decadent Vivienne Westwood-meets-Andy Warhol 18th century France, swept up in Prokofiev’s romantic score, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Scottish Ballet’s exceptional dancers bring these unforgettable characters to life with genuine emotion and plenty of wit, making Cinderella a fantastic feast of classical and modern dance as original as it is visually striking. A must-see production - don’t wait until midnight to secure your seats!

DANCING AT LUGHNASA

From Ireland's most prolific and distinguished living playwright

Brian Friel’s Olivier-award-winning play. Summer 1936. A cottage in the remote Irish village of Ballybeg, the five Mundy sisters live a simple life in the shadow of the hills of Donegal with their recently returned brother Jack, a missionary priest, sevenyear-old Michael and a wireless set called ‘Machoney’. Years later the grown up Michael looks back at that fateful summer when the knockings of change finally caught up the Mundy family. We see the sisters laugh, cry and dance in their boots in the foothills of Ballybeg fighting the forces of change in the only way they can as the dusk sets on the life they know. The play paints a vivid and life-affirming portrait of these brave women following their loss of love and opportunity played out against the echoes of the 20th century with a dark humour, raw energy and tenderness. Produced by The Original Theatre Company.

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE Tuesday 8– Saturday 12 February THEATRE ROYAL BATH PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS THE WEST YORKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE PRODUCTION OF

THE HISTORY BOYS BY ALAN BENNETT

One of the great plays of the decade, The History Boys is set in a school in the North of England where a boisterous bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys are attempting to gain entrance to Oxford and Cambridge whilst fending off the distractions of sport and sex. In Alan Bennett's much-loved play, staffroom battles and the anarchy of adolescence provide a rich vein of comedy. The History Boys opened in May 2004 at the National Theatre to rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on became one of their biggest ever hits, winning no less than 30 major awards including both Oliver and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In 2005, a film was made with the entire original cast, many of whom have subsequently become household names. This will be the first major revival of the play since the original National Theatre production. Alan Bennett is one of the most distinctive voices in British theatre. Wry and tender, his impeccably-observed plays include Talking Heads, Single Spies, Forty Years On, Habeas Corpus, The Madness of George III and The Lady in the Van. Director Christopher Luscombe achieved tremendous success with his production of Alan Bennett’s Enjoy in the West End.

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE Thursday 24 – Saturday 26 February ABERDEEN OPERA COMPANY presents

PHANTOM

Book by Arthur Kopit Music and Lyrics by Maury Yeston Based on the novel ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ by Gaston Leroux

The Scottish première of a musical sensation The phantom… a hideously deformed face hidden by a mask; a life lived in loneliness and shadow; a man with a dark and tortured soul who rages against the night and will kill and maim with little compunction. Christine, a beautiful young woman with the voice of an angel, new to the world of opera, whom he will adopt as his protégé and who, unknowingly, carries all of his fragile hopes and dreams. L’Opera Garnier: an opera house in Paris, ornate chandeliers, reflected in mirrors and gleaming marble underpinned by a dank, dark world of catacombs peopled by outcasts. A large soaring chorus, fine principals and wonderful score play counterpoint to a crashing chandelier, an electrified staircase, a boat where you least expect it, in this tale of fantasy and fear, love and hate, revenge, murder, untimely death and ultimate loss.

“Words cannot express how meaningful it is to me that you are presenting this work which is so dear to my heart. I wish you a thrilling and successful production” Maury Yeston, New York City, September 2010.

DEATH OF A SALESMAN

by Arthur Miller. Directed by Ian Grieve.

Thirty-four years ago travelling salesman Willy Loman climbed into his car to chase the American dream: running on hope and ‘riding on a smile and a shoeshine’ into the land of opportunity. This is the journey of his life, told in one day. Willy, now 63, returns home for the last time to his family, with his memories, his daydreams and his terrible fear that somewhere along the road he might have taken a wrong turn. Written by the legendary Arthur Miller (The Crucible, All My Sons, A View from the Bridge) Death of a Salesman is arguably his greatest work. Described as the first great American tragedy, Death of a Salesman helped Miller gain the reputation of being a man who understood the deep essence of the United States. Addressing the painful conflicts within one family, the play also considers the cost of blind faith in the American Dream. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 and still punches with full force 66 years after its premiere.

★★★★★ Christopher Hart, Sunday Times

Sunday Times, News of the World, Sunday Express, Absolute Radio, Smooth FM, Magic FM

Tuesday 8 – Saturday 12 March

AVENUE Q

After nearly five years of mischief, bad behaviour and political incorrectness, London’s funniest show by far is hitting the road. The Tony-award-winning Avenue Q is the irresistibly charming musical about the lovably hopeless characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues: love, work, relationships and, above all, just how are you supposed to pay the bills with a BA in English? Hilarious and uproariously entertaining, with a terrific batch of songs performed by a cast of hugely talented performers and puppets, Avenue Q is the musical like no other. So don’t let your life suck – book your tickets today! Contains scenes which may be unsuitable for under 12’s.

“Q stands for quite simply the best show in town. Go now and go again and again” Sky News “Cross Sesame Street with The Muppet Show, give it an X rating and clap on a government health warning that too much laughter can make your sides ache and you’ve got Avenue Q” Radio 2 “The funniest thing I’ve ever seen” Kiss FM “Absolutely brilliant. We nearly died laughing” Absolute Radio

BOOK NOW FOR Monday 14 – 19 March THE THEATRICAL Saturday JEKYLL AND HYDE EVENT OF 2011!

Marti Pellow, the hugely successful solo artist and front man of Wet Wet Wet, makes a hotly-anticipated return to the UK stage in a major new tour of the hit Broadway musical, Jekyll and Hyde. Marti Pellow’s successes with Wet Wet Wet include dozens of top-ten singles and multi-platinum albums; their hit single, Love is All Around, spent 15 weeks at the Number one spot in the UK charts in 1994 when it featured on the soundtrack to the romantic comedy of the decade, Four Weddings and a Funeral. As well as a critically-acclaimed solo career, Marti has gone on to star in the West End, on Broadway and on National Tour in the smash-hit stage musicals Chicago and The Witches of Eastwick. Written by Frank Wildhorn with book and lyrics by the Academy-award-winning composer Leslie Bricusse (Scrooge, Doctor Dolittle), the Broadway production of Jekyll and Hyde ran for over 1500 sell-out performances between 1997 and 2001. Glamorous, sexy and deliciously wicked in equal measures, Jekyll and Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic gothic novella. Pellow stars as the brilliant but obsessive scientist whose sadistic alter ego wreaks havoc across Victorian London in this dark tale of love, redemption and the seductive power of evil.

Footloose explodes onto the stage with classic ‘80s anthems including Holding Out For A Hero, Almost Paradise, Let’s Hear It For The Boy, and of course the title track, Footloose. Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign presents STUDENT SHOW 2011

90th YEA R

The course of love never did run smoothly... Wednesday 20– Saturday 23 April ABERDEEN STUDENTS’ CHARITIES CAMPAIGN presents

SLEEPLESS IN SEATON

Last year saw us travelling through the space-time continuum with tractor-driving Doc Broon in Back to the Teuchter. This year sees us tackling love and all the problems that come with it in Sleepless in Seaton. In the movies, the course of true love never runs smooth, and local video-store owner Davey Dee finds out the hard way when he is dumped by his long-term girlfriend. Desperate to know why he is doomed to be rejected, he revisits his five ex-girlfriends to find out what he has to do to get the girl. Student Show forms a major part of the annual Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign. Over the years Student Show has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local charities, last year contributing around £43,000 to the final total. Student Show is a long-standing tradition in Aberdeen, having run for 90 years with our first show being performed in 1921. Aberdeen’s very own Student Show is one of the largest shows of it’s kind in Europe, and the reason for it’s continuing success is the support of the Aberdeen public. We look forward to the continuing support this year.

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE SCOTTISH THEATRES CONSORTIUM PRESENTS A STARTLING NEW PRODUCTION OF TOM McGRATH’S CLASSIC

Tuesday 26 – Saturday 30 April

THE HARD MAN

Byrne is a hard man. A fixer. His journey through the ganglands of Glasgow’s East End has taken him from teenage truant to petty criminal to gangster and to prison.

“Ma roads mapped oot fur me. Ah keep a chib over the door an a blade in ma bedroom” The Hard Man is an intense and stylized exploration of notorious gangster turned artist Jimmy Boyle’s early life and of the cult of male violence on the streets of Glasgow – a world dominated by struggle and brutality, success and failure, victims and perpetrators. And a world still frighteningly part of Scotland today. This brand-new production is the first major revival for over 30 years. Suitable for age 15+.

OPERA DELLA LUNA presents

DIE FLEDERMAUS

One of the world’s most famous operettas, Die Fledermaus now gets a glittering new look by the country’s best small-scale opera and operetta company. Opera della Luna have earned themselves a matchless reputation, celebrating over 15 years of acclaimed productions of Gilbert and Sullivan and Offenbach. They now turn their hand to the ‘waltz king’ Johann Strauss and this sparkling score. Dr Falke was once left to wander home, drunk, and as a bat, by his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein. Opera Now dressed To exact his revenge he arranges for Eisenstein to attend an extremely risqué party at the home of the outrageous Russian aristocrat, Prince Orlofsky. There Eisenstein seduces a mysterious Hungarian Evening Standard countess, who is in fact his own wife in disguise. This entirely new and saucy production is directed – with his own new translation – by Jeff Clarke and designed by Gabriella Csanyi-Wills – the team that created the company’s wonderful recent production INCLUDES of The Mikado.

“Brilliant, not to mention hilarious. The most enjoyable evening for ages” “Ensemble playing at its best”

YES, PRIME MINISTER

DIRECT FROM THE WEST END Following a sell-out season at Chichester Festival Theatre and successful West End run, Yes, Prime Minister comes to His Majesty’s Theatre for one week only. The original writers of the classic BBC TV series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this anniversary production, and now the Prime Minister Jim Hacker, his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and his Private Secretary Bernard Woolley are back in this hilarious new play. In a world of spin, Blackberrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers, the PM is staring disaster in the face. The country is on the brink of financial meltdown, and the Government’s only apparent salvation comes from a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge?

UK PREMIERE 7.30pm

RIGOLETTO Giuseppe Verdi Sung in Italian with English Supertitles. Director Matthew Richardson brings Verdi’s Rigoletto to the stage in a stylish, intelligent and theatrical production. Based on a play by Victor Hugo, Verdi’s opera tells a tragic tale. Rigoletto, a hunch-back jester at the court of the Duke of Mantua, is forced to find new conquests for his carefree, womanizing master. As the web of court intrigue tightens around him, Rigoletto finds himself the victim of a grave curse, but it is his carefully protected daughter Gilda who is the one to suffer. From the aching naivety of Gilda’s first love to the Duke’s untroubled revelry and Rigoletto’s tortured realisation of his failure as a father, Verdi takes the characters from elation to despair in an opera densely packed with extraordinary music. English baritone Eddie Wade sings Rigoletto in his debut in the role, and Edgaras Montvidas, Nemorino in our recent production of The Elixir of Love, sings the role of the Duke. Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Nadine Livingston brings a fresh innocence to the role of Gilda. Tobias Ringborg, well known to Scottish Opera audiences from 2009’s Cosi fan tutte, conducts. BUILDINGS

INCLUDES £1 PER TICKET FOR RESTORATION FUND From November 2010 Aberdeen Performing Arts is introducing a building restoration fund and £1 from every ticket purchased (on shows identified in our brochures by the symbol above) will go towards this restoration fund. The fund will be used to – carry out redevelopment and restoration work on the Music Hall replace seats in our three venues – The Lemon Tree, His Majesty’s Theatre and the Music Hall and for ongoing development of our venues to improve customer comfort levels These funds will be ringfenced in APA accounts so that they can only be used for the purposes of refurbishment, development and restoration of APA venues. The first stage of the work will be to improve the seating in all three of our venues. The first improvements you will notice will be to the concert style seating in The Lemon Tree Lounge and early next year in tiered areas of HMT. A new theatre seat has been developed which gives considerably more legroom and these have already been introduced in theatres in Glasgow. Improvements to the Music Hall will form part of a larger redevelopment scheme – as part of this project the seating in the balcony of the Music Hall will be replaced.

The restoration fund is absolutely vital to ensure that comfort levels in our venues are progressively improved. If you would like to give additional support to our building restoration fund please contact Lorna Christie our Development Manager at lorna.christie@aberdeenperformingarts.com or phone 01224 337657 for details or pick up one of the leaflets in our venues. HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE “David Grindley’s superb production - arouses emotions that go too deep for words”Daily Telegraph

Tuesday 13 Saturday 17 September RC SHERRIFF’S

JOURNEY’S END

What candles may be held to speed them all? Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes. In the days leading up to the last great German offensive of the First World War, Raleigh, an 18-yearold soldier joins a besieged company of soldiers in the British trenches at St Quentin. There he finds his new comrades being led by his old school friend Stanhope but discovers that the man in army greens much changed from the boy he left behind in cricketing whites. Journey’s End is the Olivier-nominated, Tony and Drama Desk award-winning production directed by David Grindley (Six Degrees of Separation, Crown Matrimonial, The Philanthropist) that won critical acclaim in the West End and on Broadway. RC Sherriff’s masterpiece is a must see of British theatre. Based on the author’s own experience of the Front and life in the trenches, it celebrates humour and courage in the face of certain tragedy and remains an important reminder of the horrors of war and the real, unromanticised heroes who fought it.

CORPORATE

SUPPORT APA’S CREATIVE LEARNING

Our Creative Learning department offers a wide range of activities throughout the year for all ages and abilities. These range from pre- and post-show talks, adult drama classes, theatre tours, youth theatre, creative kids craft sessions and a variety of workshop opportunities.

Always wanted to see behind the scenes? Explore the magic of His Majesty’s Theatre and get an insight into the history and inner workings of this busy theatre. Visit all of the front-of-house areas, backstage and even get a chance to get onto the stage itself (show permitting). We run regular weekend tours throughout the year, and you can book them through our Box Offices at HMT, Music Hall and The Lemon Tree. The tours cost £5/£3 concession with all funds raised contributing to the APA Creative Learning programme.

As a registered charity, Aberdeen Performing Arts requires funding to run our Creative Learning activities, many of which benefit children from all over Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Our APA Youth Theatre provides young people aged 12 to 18 from throughout the city and shire, including many of Aberdeen’s regeneration areas, a wonderful opportunity to be involved in all aspects of theatre - from devising a subject to work on through developing a performance and ultimately performing in front of an audience. The project aims to help improve communication and technical skills and the ability to work in a team. Involvement will give the young people a positive outlet for creativity and opportunities to gain new experiences otherwise not available to them. The Lemon Tree will provide a safe and supportive environment to develop these skills. Financial support of this project is vital to enable us to help these young people develop into confident young adults gaining skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. THE BLUES BAND

The Blues Band was formed in 1979, by ex Manfred Mann group members, Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, originally to play a few pub gigs on Paul Jones’ nights off from his then full time career as an actor in London’s West End. The Blues had always been their first love, indeed Manfred Mann for a short time backed Sonny Boy Williamson. Tom’s first band – The Roosters - also included a young Eric Clapton. They (Paul & Tom) called on Tom’s old McGuinness Flint friend Hughie Flint to play drums - and then renowned singer/slide guitarist Dave Kelly, who brought in Gary Fletcher to play bass guitar. Since then - Hughie retired and Family and Medecine Head stalwart Rob Townsend joined on drums. Seventeen or is it eighteen albums/cds later they are still going strong. 2010 saw them make their seventh appearance at The Glastonbury Festival.

SIMPLY BIG BAND

From the raging razzmatazz of Harlem’s Cotton Club in the 20s, to the halcyon post-war days of swing and Sinatra’s bobby-sox girls, and the glamorous glitz of Las Vegas in the swinging 60s, Simply Big Band will take the audience back to when music meant magical songs, larger-thanlife performers and legendary venues. You’ve seen Strictly Come Dancing on TV. Now, witness your favourite dances first hand on stage, take the chance to Jive, Salsa, Lindy Hop, Tap and Foxtrot along in the aisles to some of the most memorable music in history. The heartbeat of the night will be the wonderful big band itself, an electrifying 26-piece orchestra comprising some of the finest musicians in the land, the perfect complement for spine-tingling performances by a roster of top guest singers. The perfect night out for all the family.

LAUGHTER THERAPY

Since the turn of the century Jimmy has been a ‘fun slinger’ of international repute. Laughter Therapy is his ninth solo show. It’ll be an evening of non stop jokes, gags and banter. If you’ve got a sick sense of humour then maybe laughter is the best medicine. Not to be taken if you have a sensitive disposition or an overactive moral compass. Recommended dose: one brand new show to be taken annually (I said annually).

Robin Ticciati Conductor John Mark Ainsley Tenor Berlioz Overture, Beatrice and Benedict Britten Nocturne Schumann Symphony No 4 (original version) SCO Principal Conductor Robin Ticciati frames Britten with music by two composers he loves and who were themselves regular correspondents. Schumann’s symphony blazes like day after Britten’s night: this is undiluted Romanticism at its most exhilarating – Schumann himself once used the word ‘Phantasie’ to describe it.

Daniel Hope Director/Violin Ilan Volkov Conductor JS Bach Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV1041 Bruckner Symphony No.5 Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony is a monumental work - a huge edifice that poses a real challenge to both orchestra and conductor. Ilan Volkov has already proved himself a wonderful exponent of Bruckner’s inspiring music with the BBC SSO, and this performance is definitely one to look forward to. Violinist Daniel Hope prefaces this epic symphony with the intimacy of a concerto by JS Bach.

Opening with the extrovert showmanship of a youthful Prokofiev, it closes with the darkest night of the older Shostakovich’s soul. Mozart’s concerto is among his grandest, and it is played here by a brilliant young Swiss making his SCO debut. To complete the programme, Andrew Manze’s own arrangement of Lotti’s Crucifixus, one of the most beautiful pieces in all music.

Andrew Litton Conductor Johannes Moser Cello Wagner Prelude to‘Parsifal’ Elgar Cello Concerto Sibelius Symphony No.1 American conductor Andrew Litton’s guest appearances with the BBC SSO are always a highlight; this time he brings a work that the orchestra has in its bones, Sibelius’s Symphony No.1. Elgar’s Cello Concerto, very much a product of the composer’s despair at the end of the Great War, has its own inner spirituality, and an elegiac sense of loss that never ceases to move the listener. It’s played here by the outstanding young German cellist Johannes Moser.

Donald Runnicles Conductor Lynn Harrell Cello Ravel Ma mère l’oye (Suite) Dutilleux Cello Concerto: Tout un monde lointain Debussy Images (Gigues and Ibéria) Ravel Bolero American cellist Lynn Harrell joins Donald Runnicles and the orchestra in this mix of music by French composers. The inspiration for Dutilleux’s elusive, nocturnal Cello Concerto came from the poetry of Baudelaire. Also inspired by literature was Ravel’s wonderful ballet score for Mother Goose. And Spain forms the exotic backdrop to both Debussy’s Ibéria and Ravel’s ever-popular showpiece, Bolero.
