Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon returns with her critically-acclaimed dance theatre production, Park. Park is an urban oasis, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love and learn to survive. In this playground of relationships, young lovers wrestle in a historic fountain, a graffiti artist sprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in a bag lady and a flag-waving bully rants worn out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine creating a modern day fairytale that is alternately sharp, funny and cruel. Reworked for 2014 with new 3D imaging and multi talented cast Park presents a breathtaking collision of highly acute physical theatre, text, athletic dance and funky music, delivering fresh statements about our time.

La Traviata

Starring Elena Dee and Alyona Kistenyova The love story that gripped Paris Back by public demand A tragic tale of searing passion and memorable music, La Traviata is Verdi’s outstanding interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th century, La Dame aux Camelias. Based on a true story, it tells of the passionate loves and life of the consumptive courtesan, Violetta. There are many echoes of Verdi’s own life in Traviata and he threw himself into the music. The highlights include the Brindisi, the best known drinking song in opera, the duet Un Di Felice and Violetta’s haunting aria Addio Del Passato. This magnificent production boasts sumptuous sets and costumes.

Rigoletto

The masterpiece they tried to ban

Starring Vladimir Dragos as Rigoletto Featuring a magnificent golden eagle with a seven-foot wingspan. A stunning traditional production recapturing the decadence of Renaissance Italy with lavish sets and opulent costumes Verdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto is a dramatic tale of the jester’s daughter whose heart is stolen by a charming but unreliable ruler – and how her father’s attempts to prevent the love affair lead to tragedy. The opera was almost banned because it exposed the licentious behaviour of the powers-that-be at court. Featuring the two of the most celebrated tenor arias La Donna è Mobile and Questa o Quella justly turned into classics by Caruso, Rigoletto is based on a play by Victor Hugo, who wrote Les Miserables.

A gypsy woman is discovered in the castle of the Count di Luna, crouched over the cradle of his youngest son. When the boy falls ill, she is burned at the stake for witchcraft. Her daughter, crazed with grief, snatches the child intending to kill him, but in her madness, throws her own son onto the fire. Christopher Brookmyre made an immediate impact with his stunning debut novel Quite Ugly One Morning, gaining a cult following which has grown with each subsequent book. The titles give a clue – Boiling a Frog, A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away, One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night… There’s a wild, dark, anarchic sense of humour at work here, and it’s linked to a real gift for storytelling. He’s usually listed as a ‘crime writer’ (sub-genre Tartain Noir). But that’s not the half of it. His most recent novels are Flesh Wounds and Dead Girl Walking.

AL Kennedy is one of the brightest talents on the current literary scene, a writer of dazzling prose, a stylist of real distinction who has won a host of literary awards, including the prestigious Costa Book of the Year Award. Her novels include So I am glad, Day and Everything You Need. Her latest short story collection is All the Rage. She is Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Warwick. JAMES KELMAN is the most influential Scottish writer of his generation. He’s a Booker Prize winner (for How Late it was, How Late), an internationally renowned novelist and short story writer, dramatist, essayist and polemicist who has drawn comparisons with Beckett and Kafka. Outspoken and politically engaged, he brings an uncompromising integrity to everything he does. But the work is grounded in a profound humanity, shot through with a dark (and recognisably Glaswegian) sense of humour. Hearing him read his own work is an unforgettable experience.

Carol Ann Duffy, Liz Lochhead, Gillian Clarke with music by John Sampson CAROL ANN DUFFY, the UK’s Poet Laureate, has single-handedly brought poetry to a mass audience with work that is sublimely beautiful, deeply moving, outrageously funny, and above all, accessible. LIZ LOCHHEAD is Scotland’s Makar, or Poet Laureate (a post in which she succeeded the great Edwin Morgan). She is a much loved poet and dramatist (her play Mary Queen of Scots got her head chopped off is a modern classic). Her work is hugely popular with all ages and she recently published a representative selection, A Choosing: The Selected Poems. GILLIAN CLARKE is the National Poet of Wales and her many awards include the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. She is also a successful playwright. John Butt Director Nicholas Mulroy Evangelist Robert Davies Jesus JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion was first performed at Easter between 1727 and 1729, and has since become one of the towering works of classical music. It brings together two orchestras and choruses to create a powerful meditation on the story of Christ’s crucifixion, as related by the Gospel of Matthew. Using similar forces and instruments to those that Bach would have used, the Dunedin Consort makes use of 8 individual solo voices alongside the group’s characteristically virtuosic instrumental players, highlighting a real sense of clarity and emotional expression in exploring what is often considered Bach’s masterpiece.

Coronation Anthems: Zadok the Priest My heart is inditing Purcell Ode to St Cecilia John Butt Director Originally composed for the coronation of George II in 1727, Handel’s coronation anthems Zadok the Priest and My heart is inditing are among his best-loved choral pieces. With the splendour of trumpets and drums and their rousing beginnings, we hear Handel at his most extroverted. The Ode to St Cecilia is one of Henry Purcell’s largest choral works and presents a fitting tribute to the patron saint of music. Purcell makes use of a number of dance forms, typifying the elegance and poise that were to become hallmarks of the English baroque.

Tchaikovsky’s dramatic themes, intense rhythms, and soaring, dancelike melodies make an immediate connection with audiences. His Andante Cantabile and the Serenade for Strings are powerful, moving works that come straight from the heart. Written during a visit to war-torn Dresden, Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony is a gripping portrayal of the brutality of conflict. Its jagged, dynamic rhythms in the central sections are contrasted by elegiac outer movements that never fail to move the listener.

A Classical Spectacular

Christmas Classics

Definitely a concert not to be missed.

Stravinsky’s infectiously dancelike concerto was made in the USA but every single punchy, rhythmic bar is inspired by Bach. A pair of sublime Mozart works from 1778-79 offers a snapshot of the young composer in Paris – where his symphony was an immediate hit – and Salzburg where he wrote the sublime Sinfonia Concertante. Mozart himself longed for Vienna, and so did Beethoven as he wrote his first concerto. When he finally arrived, Mozart was both a prospective teacher and his biggest competitor.

But Glazunov was more than just a great teacher – and The Seasons is more than just the missing link between Tchaikovsky’s and Stravinsky’s ballets. It’s one of Imperial Russia’s forgotten treasures, glittering with colour and brimming over with hummable tunes. Ilan Volkov charges it with all his trademark electricity, while Mariinsky Theatre veteran Yuri Vorobiev brings true St Petersburg style to the pitch-black humour of Mussorgsky’s pungent songs. Roddy Frame

Brit Floyd

Best known as the leader of Scottish pop group Aztec Camera, Roddy Frame burst onto the U.K. pop scene as a songwriting wunderkind who became a critical favorite while still in his teens. If the stardom expected of him never quite stuck, Frame has earned a reputation as a gifted, literate tunesmith who has enjoyed a longrunning and uncompromised career. In his early teens, Frame was inspired by the songcraft of David Bowie, the conversational realism of Mark E. Smith and the Fall, and the sounds of earlier rock innovators such as the Velvet Underground, the Byrds, and Love. Frame took up songwriting, and in 1980 he formed Aztec Camera with like-minded friends Campbell Owens on bass and Dave Mulholland on drums.

Yet Another Evening with

Mike + the Mechanics

Solid Silver 60s

The hardest working band in the business? Very possibly. No sooner had Mike + The Mechanics finished their fantastic The Living Years 25th Anniversary Tour with a blow out gig at the Hammersmith Apollo in March than they embarked upon a whirlwind set of dates in Europe (from which they’ll take a brief sojourn to play the REWIND festival in Henley and Cheshire in August). And they’d barely embarked upon that mini-odyssey before they were plotting their next big UK tour. Don’t deny yourself the chance to see Mike and the Mechanics in the flesh in 2015 (especially if you missed them in 2014) – they can’t keep this pace up for long.

Celebrating 30 tremendous years of the UK’s original and premier sixties show, with its most sensational line-up yet. Headlining, and back in the UK for the first time in 17 years, Billy J Kramer will be performing alongside the original voice of the Searchers, Mike Pender. Chris Farlowe of Handbags & Gladrags fame and a Solid Silver firm favourite will sock it to you. And finally on this anniversary bill is UK soul pioneer PP Arnold - one of the original members of The Ikettes. All of these legends are backed by The New Amen Corner. Plus, the bill’s not complete without very special guests, the wildly successful Merseybeats.

Yes him with the loud shirts and messed up hair from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow and multiple series on Radio 4. An evening in the company of an idiot. Or is he? Yes he is. Only come if you like jokes though. If not you’ll be cross. “Absurdist one-line masterpieces” The Times “He’s fast absurd and very funny” Radio Times “The best one-liner merchant in british comedy” Chortle “No-one can touch Jones when he hits his stride” The Guardian

★★★★★

“It didn’t falter for a moment. This is stand-up comedy of the first order... there’s scarcely a word wasted... seriously good fun” The Times

Chris Packham celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Aberdeen and District RSPB Local Group with his talk Tadpoles Not Included. The evening contains encounters with large hungry carnivores, close shaves with extinction, dangerous views about conservation, and he will expose the truth about our wildlife. Illustrated with his superb photographs and exaggerated with film clips Chris Packham presents an evening of zoological riches, humorous anecdotes and thought provoking questions about the creatures we say we love – and some we don’t. Its big cats versus birds of prey versus insects versus humans and Chris tells it as it is.

following a sell-out four week West-End residency and a sold-out season at the Edinburgh Festival. A firm favourite with his legendary performances, Omid’s stand-up awards include; Time Out Award and EMMA Award for Best Stand Up and nominated for the South Bank Award. Omid was the winner of the “Best Actor” Award for his lead performance in The Infidel at the Turin Film Festival (won the previous year by Bill Murray). The Infidel also picked up a Loaded LAFTA award for “Funniest film” and Omid was short listed for “Peter Sellers Award” at the ‘London Evening Standard British Film Awards’.

“Jokes as sharp as barbed wire and a comedy brain quicker than a steel trap… Rarely have the rafters of the Playhouse shook so dangerously to the sound of laughter.” The Scotsman ★★★★

“A supremely confident performer, his timing for delivering punchlines is something special” The Telegraph ★★★★

Paul Merton’s Impro Chums

Reginald D Hunter

An Evening with

One Man, One Guvnor Twenty years ago Britain’s favourite publican Al Murray, The Pub Landlord, embarked on his one man mission as the King Cnut of Common Sense, holding back a tide of bottled beer and nanny state nonsense. To celebrate this milestone join this icon on his new tour with his brand new show One Man, One Guvnor. Al Murray The Pub Landlord: One Man, One Guvnor - 20 years at the lager top, coming soon to a theatre near you. “A national treasure” The Daily Telegraph “Murray’s interaction with the crowd remains one of the wonders of the comedy world” The Times

Paul Merton, one of the UK’s best-loved performers, and his world renowned Impro Chums: Mike McShane, Lee Simpson, Richard Vranch and Suki Webster will create a new and unique comedy show, based entirely on suggestions from the audience, their own finely honed improvisational skills and an almost manic compulsion to show off. Special guests may also be joining them including: Niall Ashdown, Andy Smart and Steve Steen*. *4 performers will join Paul on each performance.

David Sedaris

“This is comedy of a rare scope” Times Reginald D Hunter returns to the UK in 2015 with a brand new tour following a hugely successful year filming and performing around the world. Having appeared at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Sydney Opera House Gala in Australia, Reginald then made his debut in New Zealand. He then moved closer to home with his first tour of mainland Europe before travelling back to his birthplace in America to film Reginald D Hunter’s Songs Of The South, a three part BBC2 series, which is due for transmission in early 2015.

You may have heard him on the hugely popular BBC Radio 4 series Meet David Sedaris or you might be one of the millions worldwide who have read one of his many books. After three sell-out runs in London, two sell-out Edinburgh Fringe Festival stints and a sellout UK 2014 tour; Sedaris will once again set out across the UK on tour. We’re delighted to announce he’s coming to Aberdeen for what is sure to be a very popular night and one of the literary events of the year in the city. “David Sedaris isn’t a stand-up, or even much of a showman. But in his own dry and unassuming way, he’s one of the finest comic talents currently living on this planet.” The Guardian Doors 6pm/Show time 7.30pm
