HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE “Lindsay Posner’s triumphant production. Brilliant, vintage Leigh”
Monday 4 - Saturday 9 February THEATRE ROYAL BATH PRODUCTIONS AND MENIER CHOCOLATE FACTORY PRESENT
Abigail’s Party BY MIKE LEIGH DIRECTED BY LINDSAY POSNER DIRECT FROM THE WEST END After a triumphant West End run, Lindsay Posner’s acclaimed revival of one of the most popular plays ever written is touring the UK. Donna Summer is playing on the stereo. Dishes of cheese and pineapple are on the coffee table…the social get-together from hell is about to begin. Beverly, and estate agent husband Laurence, have invited round new neighbours, Tony and Ange and nervous divorcee Sue, twitchy about the party her fifteen year old daughter, Abigail, is throwing over the road. As Beverly plies the guests with alcohol, cigarettes, Demis Roussos and nibbles, this horribly compelling evening descends into drunkenness and debauchery. Comedy, drama and tragedy combine into an iconic piece of theatre. Mike Leigh’s comedy became an instant classic when it first appeared as a BBC Play For Today in 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It is a ruthlessly accurate observation of the pretensions of suburbia, a world obsessed with class and taste and ruled over by the monstrous Beverly!

The Mousetrap A CLASSIC. A LANDMARK. A LEGEND. The Mousetrap is famous around the world as being the longest running show of any kind in the history of British theatre – with over 24,000 performances it’s a play to be proud of. And to celebrate 60 incredible years on stage, it’s going on tour for the very first time ever, with an all-star cast to give you a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this masterpiece here at HMT. The Government Inspector By Nicolai Gogol, translated by Adrian Mitchell, directed by Gerry Mulgrew Bribes, mis-directed contracts, mis-allocation of public money, fiddled expenses. Panic. Sound familiar? A penniless nobody from the big city arrives in a small town, where he is mistaken for the all-powerful government inspector by its corrupt and self-serving officials. They all have to work together fast to clean up their act – shredding incriminating documents, issuing gagging orders, blacking out the media. The Government Inspector’s hilarious and vicious expose of the corruption of (petty) power pulls off that rare trick of providing belly laughs and food for thought in a single entertaining evening at the theatre.

Michael Frayn The multi-award-winning backstage comedy The Old Vic and West-End smash hit Noises Off comes to His Majesty’s Theatre following its triumphant and critically acclaimed sell out run in London. Hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill - a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it follows the backstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through rehearsals, to a shambolic first night in Weston–super-Mare, and a final disastrous performance in Stockton-on-Tees. Cast to be announced.

Monday 13 & Tuesday 14 May
National Dance Company Wales
Bill Bailey: Qualmpeddler Bill Bailey had Doubts about the modern world, but these have now grown into Qualms. He will be channeling these feelings of Unease and Apprehension, with the help of Religious Dubstep, his folk bouzouki, Horntallica, a re-appraisal of some of the world’s greatest works of art and perhaps a dub version of Downton Abbey. He looks at the Consequences of Lies, the Unending Search for the Higgs and the Hiding Skills of Dentists. Bill tries to confront his ClusterQualm of living in a Time of Spectacular Ignorance, and Rare Planetary Alignment that may be part of the Mayan End of Days prophecy. Come savour this Broth of Anxiety with Bill Bailey: Qualmpeddler. This show has the all classic Bill Bailey elements, trademark musical mash-ups, multi-lingual riffs, films, songs, philosophizing and silliness on a grand scale…Plus one amazing owl.
National Dance Company Wales presents a spellbinding triple bill of exhilarating dance. The acclaimed Dream, from world-renowned choreographer Christopher Bruce, is a breathtaking celebration of the excellence and achievement of Britain in its Olympic year. Exploring the fantasy and ritual of weddings, Noces by French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj is an astonishing spectacle of dynamic movement and evocative costumes performed to Igor Stravinsky’s exquisite score, Les Noces. Award-winning Company dancer and House Choreographer Eleesha Drennan presents her latest work with a recording of a newly-commissioned percussion concerto from BBC National Orchestra of Wales’ resident composer Mark Bowden featuring soloist Dame Evelyn Glennie. HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE Thursday 23 - Saturday 25 May
Music: La Sylphide - Herman Severin Løvenskjold performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra
The Pirates of Penzance
Presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling is a wonderfully imaginative reworking of the classic romantic ballet La Sylphide. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to rediscover this “extravagantly witty” (The Independent) tale brought home by Scotland’s national dance company. Highland Fling follows the antics of James, a young man who is lured from his nuptial bed by an unearthly siren. As his love for the strange and beautiful ‘Sylph’ becomes an obsession, he embarks on a fateful journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a magical world beyond reality and reason. A wonderful night at the theatre for both dance and drama lovers.

BALLET CAFÉ
Gilbert and Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun, performed to the highest of standards. Scottish Opera’s new co-production with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company – returning to the stage for the first time in over 10 years – is conducted by G&S expert and D’Oyly Carte Music Director John Owen Edwards and is a vibrant, stylish, all singing, all dancing show. A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a soft-hearted pirate king with a hopeless band of rogues at his side, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and an ineffectual bevy of policemen…add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February and we’re just about there. What could possibly go wrong? Exquisitely observed and wonderfully funny, Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score sees him at the top of his game, mixing an operatic style to rival the great Italians of his day with the catchy, witty melodies for which he is so well known. The fantastic ensemble cast includes G&S stalwarts Steven Page and Richard Suart. Sung in English with English supertitles NEW PRODUCTION

9 to 5 The Musical is a hilarious new musical comedy, based on the hit movie and centres on three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss. They conspire to take control of the company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do - even in a man’s world. This show features Dolly Parton’s original hit title song, 9 to 5, which won her an Oscar nomination and 4 Grammy Award nominations along with her new Tony® and Grammy nominated score. With original numbers that mix Broadway and pop with Dolly’s signature witty lyrics it will have you kicking up your heels.

BALCONY
One of the most beautiful theatres in Britain, His Majesty’s Theatre was designed by the legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham with his trademark proscenium arch and pillarless balconies. Since opening in 1906, it has continually attracted a huge range of top quality theatre productions from smash-hit musicals to top class drama and dance. Seating around 1470, the theatre has undergone three major refurbishments in its 100-year history, in the 1930s,1980s and most recently an £8m redevelopment in 2004/5, which successfully added a contemporary aspect to the historic Edwardian building, with new facilities such as the restaurant and cafe, giving Aberdeen a 21st century venue to be proud of.

Or, indeed, as personal as Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, dedicated “to the memory of an Angel”. The concert will be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

Beethoven Overture, Prometheus Dussek Piano Concerto in G minor Op 49 Schubert Symphony No 6 ‘Little C major’ Richard Egarr Conductor/Fortepiano Between classics by Schubert and Beethoven, SCO Associate Artist Richard Egarr introduces one of their contemporaries who deserves to be far better known. Dussek wrote eighteen captivating and unusual piano concertos - hugely enjoyable to listen to, and fascinating for us looking back to that time because, in them, you can so clearly hear the future – the piano styles of Liszt, Chopin and Schumann. Pre-concert Talk: 6.45pm (free to ticket holders) Richard Egarr talks about Jan Ladislav Dussek and his contemporaries.

Complementing these marvellous pieces, a youthful spree from Schubert, and one of the most astonishing pieces in all music: Grosse Fuge is late Beethoven at its most visionary.

Chopin Piano Concerto No.2
Chopin Piano Concerto No.2 Bruckner Symphony No.2 Garrick Ohlsson Piano Thomas Dausgaard Conductor Chopin wrote his Second Piano Concerto just months before leaving Poland forever, yet its music is already drenched in the poetry that would make him famous. Bruckner, meanwhile, hoped that his profoundly Romantic Second Symphony would be his passport into the Viennese musical elite - only to have it dismissed as “unplayable” by the Vienna Philharmonic. Former Chopin Competition winner Garrick Ohlsson brings a lifetime’s devotion to the composer. The concert will be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

Anyone who's attended a 10CC concert in recent years is likely to have seen band co-founder Graham Gouldman's opening acoustic set, featuring some of the hits he wrote for other artistes. The success of those performances has evolved into Heart Full of Songs, which plays a more significant role as opening act on this autumn's 28-concert 10CC tour. Taking it a stage further in spring 2013, under the banner of Graham Gouldman's Heart Full of Songs, Gouldman and his 10cc bandmates Rick Fenn, Mick Wilson and Mike Stevens will give a series of stand-alone, 90-minute acoustic performances in Intimate settings. Albert Lee, by common consent one of the world’s finest guitar-players, needs no introduction to Country Music & Rock fans. He has worked with some of the world's top artists, from Emmylou Harris to the Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton to Eric Clapton. In November 2002, at Eric's request, Albert appeared at the star-studded Memorial Concert for George Harrison at London's Albert Hall, and was featured alongside Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill and Eric Clapton at Eric’s 2007 Crossroads guitar festival. He is a member of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, and fronted the band at the O2 arena on the night of the Led Zeppelin reunion concert. Albert is a Grammy award winning musician, whose talents continue to be in demand by fellow performers the world throughout.
Familiar to many thousands of music fans as the front man in the Scottish rock band Idlewild, Roddy Woomble is also a celebrated solo songwriter & performer. He followed up the release of his acclaimed 2006 solo debut My Secret is My Silence with The Impossible Song and Other Songs to an equally fantastic reception. A native of Irvine - Roddy Woomble co-founded Idlewild in 1995, naming the band for the quiet haven featured in his thenfavourite book, Anne of Green Gables. Extending a softer lyrical vein of Roddy's songwriting, 2006 saw his first solo release, My Secret Is My Silence, winning rave reviews across both the rock and folk press. Roddy went on to record and release the album Before the Ruin with Kris Drever and John McCusker in 2008, which they toured extensively around the UK to much praise. The new album will be recorded on the isle of Mull. It is due for release in March 2013. “One of Britain's most distinct and talented voices” Kerrang

Christine Bovill, Scotland’s Little Sparrow and multi award winning songwriter and performer returns to The Lemon Tree with her show PIAF. Last year PIAF sold out The Lemon Tree and the entire run sold out at the Edinburgh Festival 2012 as well as all over the country. Bovill is the world’s best Piaf performer! Charles Dumont himself, writer of No Regrets and 40 other songs for Edith Piaf flew into Edinburgh from Paris to appear on stage and play for her. He said “Christine sings so well, so beautifully.” Edinburgh Festival.org wrote, “It was as if Piaf had been alive again for a few moments with us as Christine performed.” No pretence. No gimmicks. Simply a voice. Pure and majestic. Singing of life's triumphs and tragedies, resisting the temptation of retelling her life story, PIAF focuses instead on the music. A dynamic new production by award-winning director, Grant Smeaton and seminal Scottish choreographer, Alan Greig. Weaving together dialogue, dance and theatre, Do You Nomi? takes the audience on a humorous, dark and sensual journey, using four male performers to hold a spotlight on the life of Klaus Nomi and his rise to fame in the New York avant garde scene of the 1970s and 80s. This is the story of one man’s struggle to express himself through his unique singing talent fused with his desire to hide behind a theatrical mask; it is also the story of a western world on the brink of change which would be transformed forever with the onset of the new and much misunderstood AIDS virus. Combining an emotionally driven narrative and athletic dance, this vibrant and visual production leaves the audience in no doubt as to the importance of this forgotten icon.

Fresh from their successful run of Rent Harlequin productions comes a bold, original, surreal, disturbing, thought-provoking and alarmingly funny musical. Laying bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, Assassins explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish rollercoaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet, interact and in an intense final scene inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream.

The tin soldier, who is a little the worse for wear, steps out of line and falls in love with a tissue paper ballerina. A nasty red goblin interferes and the images start to come apart at the seams. Fleeto & Wee Andy – Double Bill
When his friend is stabbed, a young lad falls in with a gang. The terrible revenge he takes brings disaster on himself and the family of his victim. Inspired by the Iliad and drawing on Glasgow’s ‘knife culture,’ Fleeto is a hard-hitting contemporary Scottish re-invention of the Greek tragic form. Another day, another young lad attacked by a knife gang and another life shattered. Wee Andy depicts the fallout for those left picking up the pieces - the surgeon who tries to repair his damaged face, the mother who takes drastic and terrifying action to protect him, and wee Andy himself, who tries to imagine a different life.

Located in the heart of the city centre, the Music Hall is Aberdeen’s premier concert hall venue, hosting a wide variety of gigs, performances, shows and events, from classical concerts to contemporary comedy. Since 1882, it has been the heart and soul of community life not just in the city but in the North-east, drawing young and old alike through its famously-pillared front door. An iconic landmark in Union Street, it is a proud example of the work of Aberdeen’s most celebrated architect Archibald Simpson, who designed a building for the citizens of the city which is still serving them faithfully to this day.
