Noises Off Michael Frayn
The Old Vic and West-End smash hit Noises Off comes to His Majesty’s Theatre following its triumphant and critically acclaimed sell out run in London. Hailed as one of the greatest British comedies ever written, Michael Frayn’s multi-award-winning backstage farce serves up a riotous double bill - a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed it follows the backstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through rehearsals in Weston-super-Mare, to a shambolic Wednesday matinee in Ashton-under-Lyne, and a final disastrous performance in Stockton-on-Tees.
Cast includes Neil Pearson (TV and Film credits include Monroe, Between the Lines, Drop the Dead Donkey and Bridget Jones’ Diary), Maureen Beattie (TV credits include Lewis, The Bill, Taggart, Casualty); David Bark-Jones, Simon Bubb, Danielle Flett, Geoffrey Freshwater, Chris Larkin, Thomasin Rand and Sasha Waddell.

SCOTTISH BALLET
Bill Bailey: Qualmpeddler
Highland Fling
Bill Bailey had Doubts about the modern world, but these have now grown into Qualms. He will be channeling these feelings of Unease and Apprehension, with the help of Religious Dubstep, his folk bouzouki, Horntallica, a re-appraisal of some of the world’s greatest works of art and perhaps a dub version of Downton Abbey. He looks at the Consequences of Lies, the Unending Search for the Higgs and the Hiding Skills of Dentists. Bill tries to confront his Cluster-Qualm of living in a Time of Spectacular Ignorance, and Rare Planetary Alignment that may be part of the Mayan End of Days prophecy. Come savour this Broth of Anxiety with Bill Bailey: Qualmpeddler. This show has the all classic Bill Bailey elements, trademark musical mash-ups, multi-lingual riffs, films, songs, philosophizing and silliness on a grand scale…Plus one amazing owl.
“Witty, clever and cheeky, Bailey was wickedly funny on every topic he broached.” Newcastle Herald (Australia)
Thursday 16 - Saturday 18 May Director and Choreographer Matthew Bourne Music: La Sylphide by Herman Severin Løvenskjold performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra Presented exclusively by Scottish Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling is a wonderfully imaginative reworking of the classic romantic ballet La Sylphide. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to rediscover this “extravagantly witty” (The Independent) tale brought home by Scotland’s national dance company. Highland Fling follows the antics of James, a young man who is lured from his nuptial bed by an unearthly siren. As his love for the strange and beautiful ‘Sylph’ becomes an obsession, he embarks on a fateful journey that takes him from the mean streets and nightclubs of Glasgow into a magical world beyond reality and reason. A wonderful night at the theatre for both dance and drama lovers.

DOYLY CARTE
The Pirates of Penzance
Opera Company
Gilbert and Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun, performed to the highest standards. This new D’Oyly Carte and Scottish Opera co-production brings the humour bang up to date with a Python-esque twinkle. A vibrant, stylish and hilarious romp through one of G&S’s finest scores, this show has everything you could want from a good night out. A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a soft-hearted pirate king, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and an ineffectual bevy of policemen…add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February. What could possibly go wrong? Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score sees him at the top of his game, with the catchy, witty tunes for which he is so well known. The fantastic ensemble cast includes a horde of young, fresh talent as well as G&S stalwarts Steven Page as The Pirate King and Richard Suart as the Major-General. Sung in English with English supertitles NEW PRODUCTION

A lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep...

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE Tuesday 3 - Saturday 7 September THE NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND AND THE ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY PRESENT
Dunsinane
By David Greig Directed by Roxana Silbert Featuring Siobhan Redmond Macbeth is dead, long live the King. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, Siward, the commanding officer, is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards Macbeth’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war.

Scottish Dance Theatre presents two contrasting and bold new works by internationally acclaimed choreographers. Montreal-based Victor Quijada takes urban dance to a new theatrical territory. His world–acclaimed dance style is heavily influenced by the Los Angeles street-dance culture he grew up in. Second Coming, Victor’s new work, is an exclusive commission for Scottish Dance Theatre and sets Victor’s unique break movement style to a potent turntablist soundtrack by DJ/composer Jasper Gahunia (AKA DJ Lil’ Jaz). Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren is a theatre sensation, having toured his works in 50 countries. Mixing beautifully poised dance with all means necessary to tell a story, Jo’s work is sculpted by an attitude to dance-making that is wild and rigorous. Scottish Dance Theatre is the first to invite him to our shores to create the bold new work Winter, Again. The piece will take you on a journey through the cycle of the darkest, coldest season, using songs from Schubert’s Eine Winterreise. Workshops available, contact box office for more information.

BALCONY
One of the most beautiful theatres in Britain, His Majesty’s Theatre was designed by the legendary theatre architect Frank Matcham with his trademark proscenium arch and pillarless balconies. Since opening in 1906, it has continually attracted a huge range of top quality theatre productions from smash-hit musicals to top class drama and dance. Seating around 1470, the theatre has undergone three major refurbishments in its 100-year history, in the 1930s,1980s and most recently an £8m redevelopment in 2004/5, which successfully added a contemporary aspect to the historic Edwardian building, with new facilities such as the restaurant and cafe, giving Aberdeen a 21st century venue to be proud of.

Located in the heart of the city centre, the Music Hall is Aberdeen’s premier concert hall venue, hosting a wide variety of gigs, performances, shows and events, from classical concerts to contemporary comedy. Since 1882, it has been the heart and soul of community life not just in the city but in the North-east, drawing young and old alike through its famously-pillared front door. An iconic landmark in Union Street, it is a proud example of the work of Aberdeen’s most celebrated architect Archibald Simpson, who designed a building for the citizens of the city which is still serving them faithfully to this day.

Britten 3 Divertimenti (arr. Morton) Shostakovich String Quartet No. 2 (arr. Morton) Shostakovich Two pieces op.11 Britten String Quartet No. 2 (arr. David Matthews) The boisterous and energetic sides of Britten’s personality come to the fore in these two works for strings in arrangements by our Artistic Director Jonathan Morton and composer David Matthews – who spent three years as Britten’s assistant at Aldeburgh. The freshness of Britten’s intense and powerful String Quartet No. 2 belies the fact that its enormous finale is built on a device by Purcell, a hero of Britten’s, who died 250 years to the day before the work’s first performance. Shostakovich’s second string quartet bubbles with a similar energy to Britten’s, with flavours of Russian folk and klezmer music and a triumphant series of variations to finish. Highland Theatre company Right Lines Productions – best known for The Accidental Death of an Accordionist, Who Bares Wins and Whisky Kisses – is back with a new show based on the book by Roger Hunt, Be Silent or Be Killed. Roger Hunt was an employee of the Royal Bank of Scotland who was sent to India in November 2008 to set up a new business operation. Shortly after his arrival in Mumbai, he was caught up in the bloody terrorist attack on the Oberoi Hotel which claimed the lives of many innocent people, who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Roger is from Macduff and in many respects, just an ordinary family man born and brought up in the North-East of Scotland. This new play explores the character of the man and the intensity of the situation he endured. For two days, Roger was trapped in his Mumbai hotel bedroom with the terrifying sound of gunfire and grenade attacks coming ever closer. He drew on an instinct to survive: as his situation became more and more grave, he was forced to make a number of calculated decisions that would ultimately save his life.
