Die Fledermaus

One of the world’s most famous operettas, Die Fledermaus now gets a glittering new look by the country’s best small-scale opera and operetta company. Opera della Luna have earned themselves a matchless reputation, celebrating over 15 years of acclaimed productions of Gilbert and Sullivan and Offenbach. They now turn their hand to the ‘waltz king’ Johann Strauss and this sparkling score.

Dr Falke was once left to wander home, drunk, and dressed as a bat, by his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein. To exact his revenge he arranges for Eisenstein to attend an extremely risqué party at the home of the outrageous Russian aristocrat, Prince Orlofsky. There Eisenstein seduces a mysterious Hungarian countess, who is in fact his own wife in disguise.

This entirely new and saucy production is directed – with his own new translation – by Jeff Clarke and designed by Gabriella Csanyi-Wills – the team that created the company’s wonderful recent production of The Mikado.

Verdi’s towering opera tells a tragic tale. Rigoletto, a jester employed by a rich and dissolute Duke, is forced to keep his master well supplied with fresh conquests. As a web of court intrigue tightens around him, Rigoletto finds himself the victim of a grave curse, but to his horror, it is his carefully protected daughter Gilda who is the one to suffer.

From the aching naivety of Gilda’s first love to the Duke’s unthinking revelry and Rigoletto’s tortured realisation of his failure as a father, Verdi takes the characters from elation to despair in an opera densely packed with extraordinary music, including the unforgettable ‘La donna è mobile’.

Director Matthew Richardson brings this operatic classic to the stage in a stylish and theatrical production. English baritone Eddie Wade sings Rigoletto, and Edgaras Montvidas (Nemorino in 2009’s The Elixir of Love) is the Duke. Nadine Livingston (Susanna in 2010’s The Marriage of Figaro) rings a fresh innocence to the role of Gilda.

Men Should Weep

Following the misfortunes and trials and tribulations of the Morrison family, Ena Lamont Stewart’s landmark play is a searing, unflinching depiction of the hand to mouth poverty that many working class people lived in at that time.

At the centre of the story and the Morrison family is Maggie, the hard working, care-worn matriarch. Supported and hindered in equal measure by a network of neighbours and family from whom it is impossible to keep any secrets and with whom there is a constant battle to maintain appearances - she does her very best in the worst of circumstances, always putting herself last.

By turns laugh out loud funny, at times tragic, but always thought provoking, Men Should Weep was remarkably ahead of its time when written in 1947. This major new production by the National Theatre of Scotland will introduce this much-loved work to a new generation of theatergoers and remind those who have seen it before why it has become universally hailed as a contemporary Scottish classic.
