LIVERPOOL ECHO
Cilla - The Musical is a spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically acclaimed ITV mini-series based on the early life of Cilla Black, by BAFTA award winner, Jeff Pope (The Moorside, Philomena, From The Cradle To The Grave, Mrs Biggs, Little Boy Blue). The story follows the extraordinary life of the ordinary teenage girl from Liverpool, Priscilla White, and her rocky, yet incredible, rise to fame. The musical score is the ultimate soundtrack to the 60’s including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had a Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, alongside a backdrop of the legendary ‘Liverpool Sound’. Kara Lily Hayworth plays Cilla. Following weeks of open auditions up and down the country, Kara fought off thousands of hopefuls to be named as the girl who would step into the Legend’s coveted shoes in the first ever musical about the star’s life. Executive Producer and Cilla’s son, Robert Willis, said of Kara: ‘I knew she was the one my mum would have wanted!’

The ruined aftermath of a bloody civil war. Ruthlessly fighting to survive, the Macbeths are thrust towards the crown by forces of elemental darkness. The National Theatre, creators of War Horse and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night‐Time, bring this epic and visually daring production of Shakespeare’s most intense tragedy on a tour of the UK and Ireland immediately following a sold out run in London. Directed by National Theatre Artistic Director Rufus Norris (Cabaret, London Road) and designed by Rae Smith (War Horse, This House) this new production propels Shakespeare’s classic title into a post‐apocalyptic world of anarchy and uncertainty. Rebus: Long Shadows By Ian Rankin. Adapted by Rona Munro. The new Rebus story exclusively on stage. Detective Inspector John Rebus is retired but the shadows of his former life still follow him through the streets of Edinburgh. Whisky helped but now he’s denying himself that pleasure. But when the daughter of a murder victim appears outside his flat, he’s back on the case and off the wagon. Rebus will need help from his ex-colleagues but one of them is already looking for him. DI Siobhan Clarke was Rebus’ greatest ally on the force but is worried that his past actions may stop them finally convicting a dangerous killer. Half-Way Rock: a fusion of the immediacy of live stage performance with the intimacy of radio drama. Marcail sees the Half-Way Rock as nothing more than a resting place on the Aberdeenshire coast until the sounds of the waves, wind and rain one day appear to her as voices, calls for help, final words long lost among the depths. But why her; why now? An answer comes only when she finds herself precariously perched thousands of feet above an abyss on the Half-Way Rock’s mirror-image on the other side of the North Sea: the Kjeragbolten. This time, the phantom words come from the Draugr - spirits of those lost at sea, human forms with heads of seaweed, and suddenly the voices make sense. Half-Way Rock is a mixed-media play by Neil Cargill in collaboration with sound designer Simon James which intertwines voices, sounds and music to create a mesmerising narrative. Join us for this work in progress sharing and find out more about the real life stories associated with Scotland’s North-east coast that have inspired and informed Half-Way Rock.

Swan Lake
Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns with a fresh look for the 21st century. Retaining the iconic elements of the original production loved by millions around the world, Matthew Bourne and award-winning designers Lez Brotherston (Set & Costumes) and Paule Constable (Lighting) will create an exciting reimagining of the classic production. Thrilling, audacious, witty and emotive, this Swan Lake is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corpsde-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm. Collecting over thirty international accolades including an Olivier Award in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway, Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times.

Thursday 10 & Saturday 12 May SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS TCHAIKOVSKY’S
Eugene Onegin
New production Supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle and Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ Appeal Tchaikovsky and Pushkin: two of Russia’s greatest artists come together in this sweeping tale of unfulfilled love. A lovesick girl; a cocky young man who thoughtlessly spurns her; a heart-stopping duel between should-be friends. Pushkin’s epic romance is relocated to pre-revolutionary Russia, as an aged Tatyana looks back on the ghosts of her adolescence and the one great love of her life: the enigmatic Eugene Onegin. In this mesmerising new production, director Oliver Mears (Director of Opera, The Royal Opera) teams up with awardwinning designer Annemarie Woods and choreographer Ashley Page (former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet) to set this hopelessly romantic opera in a world full of memories and dreams, where the past is ever present. Tchaikovsky’s soaring score, not heard on Scottish Opera’s main stage since 1993, is the most radiant of Russian lyric operas. Natalya Romaniw (Rusalka 2016), fast making a name for herself in the Russian repertoire, sings Tatyana. Samuel Dale Johnson (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) is Onegin. Scottish Opera Music Director Stuart Stratford conducts. Thu & Sat 7.15pm

Rigoletto
Award-winning director Matthew Richardson (The Devil Inside 2016) and Olivier Award-winning designer Jon Morrell revive their powerful production of Verdi’s masterpiece. Set in a dark and dangerous underworld where cruelty and inhumanity are rife – and women are objects merely to be played with and discarded – it tells the tragic tale of seduction, revenge and a father’s suffocating love for his only daughter with a clarity that is completely compelling and utterly heart‐breaking. From the aching naivety of Gilda’s first love to the dissolute revelry of ‘La donna e mobile’, Verdi’s score is packed with passion, colour and some of the best loved music in opera Internationally acclaimed baritone Aris Argiris heads up a cast of exciting talent including Lina Johnson, much praised for her Gilda in Trieste in 2016; award winning British tenor Adam Smith; David Shipley, a recent graduate of the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist Programme; and Scottish Opera Emerging Artist Katie Coventry. British conductor Rumon Gamba conducts.

Thursday 30 May & Saturday 1 June 2019 SCOTTISH OPERA PRESENTS MOZART’S
The Magic Flute Sir Thomas Allen returns to Scottish Opera to revive his five star production of Mozart’s most inventive opera. Set in a spectacular world inspired by the Victorian futurism of HG Wells and Jules Verne, this enthralling Magic Flute perfectly balances the opera’s beguiling mix of comedy, fantasy and pantomime with a profound story of the search for wisdom, love and truth. A handsome prince, a damsel in distress, sorcerers, priests and a bumbling bird catcher – all are given life in Mozart’s sublime blend of lyrical love duets, folk-like ditties and the explosive coloratura of the Queen of the Night arias. The international cast includes Peter Gijsbertsen (La traviata 2017); Gemma Summerfield, First Prize winner at the 2015 Kathleen Ferrier Awards; name to watch Julia Sitkovetsky; and Richard Burkhard, who returns to Pamino, the laughout-loud role he created in 2012. Scottish Opera favourite Tobias Ringborg (The Marriage of Figaro 2016) conducts.

Jon Richardson
Paul Chowdhry
The British Comedy Award nominee and star of Live At The Apollo and 8 Out Of 10 Cats is embarking on a nationwide tour to complain about the state of the world and offer no solutions. Since his last show he has become a husband and father, seen the UK vote to leave the EU and watched the rise of Donald Trump, all of which leaves him asking one question, why does it seem that no one else alive can correctly load a dishwasher? Come and see what Jon Richardson can do with words when he has more than thirty seconds to work with. Or should that be “with which to work”?
Following phenomenal demand and instant sell-outs across the country, comedy powerhouse and star of Taskmaster, Live at The Apollo and Stand Up for the Week, Paul Chowdhry has announced extra dates in spring 2018. “ It’s a rare and joyous thing to see a stand up so vibrant and imperiously on top of his game” The Mail on Sunday Book now to avoid disappointment, innit.
