This is a Look Again Festival Commission

6 June - 4 August 2019

Aberdeen-based creative agency Design and Code will take over the digital screen with animated Doric poetry submitted by the public working with poet Jo Gilbert, that responds to Morag Myerscough’s ‘Love at First Sight’ installation in the Castlegate.

Spinning Bits 5 August - 21 September 2019

Spinning Bits by Andy Law & Mil Stricevic is a hypnotic, abstract animation created by taking a digital image, pixel by pixel, and spinning it so that the original ‘meaning’ can no longer be seen.

Open Call We are calling for artists to submit proposals for the Music Hall’s Stepping In screen with a specific curatorial focus on long-form generative work or short-form looping animation. This opportunity is for new or existing work. Both should be silent, and have immediacy for presentation in a transient space. Lead applicants for a new commission should be based in Scotland but can collaborate with anyone from anywhere. Deadline for applications is 30 May 2019 at 6pm. For more information visit www.alt-w.org.

Tosca

Thu 31 October - Sat 2 November 2019

Thu 28 - Sat 30 May 2020

Passion, glamour, love worth dying for – Anthony Besch’s Tosca has it all. In 1940s Rome, in the shadow of Mussolini’s tyrannical rule, the ill-fated lovers come to life against a backdrop of political corruption and intrigue. This superb production is beloved the world over – don’t miss it as it comes home to the Scottish Opera stage.

Sunny, funny and with more ‘tra la la las’ per square inch than any other opera in the canon, The Gondoliers is a joy from start to finish. Director Stuart Maunder, Artistic Director at State Opera South Australia, teams up with designer Dick Bird (The Mikado 2016) to stage a production that is fast, furious and full of fun.

It has been a while, but the multi-awardwinning Welsh comedian is back, with a brand new live show. In a six-year break from stand-up, a lot has happened to Rhod. Almost all of it s**t. This show sees Rhod as funny as ever, but like never before. Raw, personal and brutally honest; no more lies, no more nonsense.

Award-winning comedian Adam Kay shares entries from his diaries as a junior doctor in this “electrifying” (Guardian) evening of stand-up and music. The accompanying book, ‘This is Going to Hurt’ is a Sunday Times bestseller, and is being turned into a major BBC series.

Jimmy’s brand new show contains jokes about all kinds of terrible things. Terrible things that might have affected you or people you know and love. But they’re just jokes - they are not the terrible things. Having political correctness at a comedy show is like having health and safety at a rodeo.

Frank Skinner:

Jonathan Pie: Fake News

Showbiz

Fri 15 November 2019

Sir Chris Bonington

Sun 17 November 2019

Wed 4 December 2019

7:30pm

Frank Skinner has announced a nationwide tour this autumn with his new stand up show Showbiz. Since his last tour, Frank’s only live comedy appearances have been with The Man With No Show, which saw him perform an hour of completely improvised stand-up comedy with no material and no set list.

Jonathan Pie is the exasperated News Reporter whose videos have been seen across the world. If no news is good news then good news is fake news. Jonathan Pie returns to the road once more to berate the people in power - and the journalists apparently holding them to account.

Sir Chris was the first mountaineer on the lecture circuit and, this autumn, he will present his “Life & Times”, covering his sixty years spent in the mountains. With original images and raw footage, this is a rare opportunity to hear about some of the greatest expeditions of the twentieth century.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Sing, Sing, Sing!

Dementia Friendly Sat 11 May 2019

The Dark Carnival: Unplugged 7pm

Fri 31 May 2019

6pm

Join us in a fun, massed-voice intergenerational singing event open to people of all ages - individuals, singing groups and community choirs - and featuring classic songs in lots of styles. Hosted by the 90-strong Music Hall Community Choir, this event launches Luminate’s new nationwide Dementia Inclusive Choirs Network.

For one night only, the Music Hall Aberdeen will come alive to the sound of a community choir competition, hosted by VSA’s Honorary President Fiona Kennedy. All money raised will go towards supporting VSA’s Mental Health Services and vulnerable adults on their journey to recovery.

An informal, rousing music and theatre show: With songs, spoken word and a free (though not compulsory!) glass of whisky for everyone, it tells the story of newcomers to the afterlife who are surprised to discover that death is not actually the end.
