All change at the top…. Following the departure of Duncan Hendry earlier this year, Jane Spiers will take up the position of Chief Executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts on Monday 3 September. She joins us from Horsecross Arts, which operates Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre. Under her leadership the organisation raised over £10m and won 30 awards and commendations. We are delighted to welcome her to APA. “I’m very much looking forward to working with partners to continue to build the reputation of the city nationally and internationally, with Aberdeen Performing Arts at the heart of cultural and community life.” Jane Spiers

Young Start Fund We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded funds from the Young Start Fund to establish three after school youth theatres across Aberdeen and a new youth theatre called APA Create, for those aged 8-12 at His Majesty’s Theatre. Community Arts graduate Laura Cherry will be joining us in the post of Youth Theatre Development Worker to lead on this exciting project.
International Theatre Exchange The Young People’s Theatre programme is delighted to have just completed a fantastic summer international exchange with other young performers from America and Germany. This was part of the 40th Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Inspired by stimulus provided by Scottish theatre company Visible Fictions, APA Senior Youth Theatre and dANCE wORxxx from Regensburg, Germany generated a brand new piece of theatre in only 8 days! This was performed as part of a double bill with the ACT Young Conservatory, who presented a staged reading of D.C Jackson’s new work Untitled Reality Project. The play was co-commissioned and developed by Aberdeen Performing Arts and American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco, California. Untitled Reality Project will be fully staged at The Lemon Tree in November by APA Young Persons Company with a free schools matinee!

THE CONE GATHERERS APA’s third large-scale production has gone into rehearsals and is set to open at His Majesty’s Theatre on the 15th September! The adaptation of Robin Jenkins’ haunting Scottish novel The Cone Gatherers is directed by Kenny Ireland and adapted for the stage by Peter Arnott. Alongside this production we will be offering:

THE STATIC ThickSkin are offering a limited number of free physical theatre workshops to support their tour of Davey Anderson’s, The Static. Workshops will explore this innovative company’s approach to creating their production. Workshops are very active and suited to pupils aged 14+. GREAT EXPECTATIONS Pre-show talk with Lucinda Dickens Hawksley Thursday 8th Nov 12.30pm-1.30pm Lucinda Hawksley, author & great great great granddaughter of Charles Dickens, will talk about the man behind the novels. Two centuries after his birth, Dickens remains one of Britain’s most enduring celebrities. Come and discover the extraordinary life of the man who wrote Great Expectations & what inspired him to write such a powerful novel. BLOOD BROTHERS With sponsorship from Aberdeen Harbour Board we are able to offer school groups the reduced rate of £100 for a workshop with Sean Jones who plays Mickey in Blood Brothers. The practical drama workshop will explore the themes and issues within the multi award-winning musical. These can be delivered in school prior to your visit to see the production at HMT. BALLETBOYZ BalletBoyz workshops explore company repertoire, presenting groups with the opportunity to explore contact work and challenge their strength and balance. Workshops conclude with creative tasks so participants leave the workshop with their own movement phrase and a greater sense of achievement. EXTRACURRICULAR NURTURING AND DEVELOPING CREATIVE TALENT IN THE NORTH EAST Our Youth theatre activity offers young people aged 8-21 the chance to develop skills in theatre and performance whilst also assisting them to gain confidence, improve communication skills and explore their creativity. • APA Young Persons Company (ages 18-21) • APA Senior Youth Theatre (ages 15-19) • APA Junior Youth Theatre (ages 12-16) APA YOUTH THEATRE MEMBERSHIP COSTS PARTICIPANTS £90 FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR! Adult Drama Workshops
Adult singing classes
For first-timers as well as drama regulars, these classes offer participants the opportunity to learn theatrical techniques, build confidence and develop creativity in a fun and friendly environment. These sessions will focus on developing performance skills through exploring a range of drama techniques. Our autumn course will run for seven weeks starting on Thu 20 Sept - Thu 15 November 7pm9pm (2 week break for October holidays) Number of spaces: 20 - no previous drama experience needed £28 full price/£22 concession
Inspired by our upcoming musical programme at HMT, these fun and inclusive classes offer you the chance to develop your vocal skills and learn how your voice works! Led by Paul Hudson the group will be singing their favourite songs specially arranged for the group. So come along with your ideas on the first session and learn to sing your favourite tunes!
