Teachers’ News Sept 2012
All change at the top…. Following the departure of Duncan Hendry earlier this year, Jane Spiers will take up the position of Chief Executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts on Monday 3 September. She joins us from Horsecross Arts, which operates Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre. Under her leadership the organisation raised over £10m and won 30 awards and commendations. We are delighted to welcome her to APA. “I’m very much looking forward to working with partners to continue to build the reputation of the city nationally and internationally, with Aberdeen Performing Arts at the heart of cultural and community life.” Jane Spiers

Young Start Fund We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded funds from the Young Start Fund to establish three after school youth theatres across Aberdeen and a new youth theatre called APA Create, for those aged 8-12 at His Majesty’s Theatre. Community Arts graduate Laura Cherry will be joining us in the post of Youth Theatre Development Worker to lead on this exciting project.
International Theatre Exchange The Young People’s Theatre programme is delighted to have just completed a fantastic summer international exchange with other young performers from America and Germany. This was part of the 40th Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Inspired by stimulus provided by Scottish theatre company Visible Fictions, APA Senior Youth Theatre and dANCE wORxxx from Regensburg, Germany generated a brand new piece of theatre in only 8 days! This was performed as part of a double bill with the ACT Young Conservatory, who presented a staged reading of D.C Jackson’s new work Untitled Reality Project. The play was co-commissioned and developed by Aberdeen Performing Arts and American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco, California. Untitled Reality Project will be fully staged at The Lemon Tree in November by APA Young Persons Company with a free schools matinee!
