CHESS
Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood directs an amazing company of actors and musicians in an extraordinary new staging of the classic musical Chess. Written by Tim Rice and ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, Chess has one of the greatest musical theatre scores of all time including One Night In Bangkok, Pity The Child, Anthem, You And I and, of course, I Know Him So Well which became a number one hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson. Two of the world's greatest chess masters battle it out at the world chess championships but their greatest contest is for the love of one woman. Amidst political intrigue and international conspiracies, the American and the Russian fight to win the heart of Florence Vassy in a romantic triangle that mirrors the heightened passions of the Cold War all set to an explosive score by the composers of Mamma Mia and the lyricist of Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. Starring X Factor’s Niki Evans as Mrs Johnstone, the superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 21st phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance. THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Sung in Italian with English Supertitles. The team behind 2007’s The Barber of Seville returns to Scottish Opera. Internationally renowned baritone Sir Thomas Allen directs Mozart’s unstoppable masterpiece, set in the stylish world of the late eighteenth century. The once charming Count Almaviva has developed a somewhat loose sense of morality and spends his days pestering the serving girls… He has a particular soft spot for Susanna, the girl Figaro is hoping to marry that very day, and is planning to put a major spanner in the works. Figaro, Susanna and Rosina, now Almaviva’s wife, conspire to stop him, but not before Figaro’s old foe, Dr Bartolo makes an appearance… Blending breathtaking arias with over-the-top characters and chaotic humour, this is Mozart at his theatrical best. Thomas Oliemans, Figaro in The Barber of Seville, returns to the role. Acclaimed Mozartian baritone Roderick Williams sings Almaviva and Scottish soprano Kate Valentine sings the role of the Countess.

LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD
THE HEART-WARMING PORTRAYAL OF 19th CENTURY COUNTRY LIFE Following the success of the award-winning BBC television series, Bill Kenwright presents a fresh new revival of Keith Dewhurst’s original stage adaptation of the much loved story Lark Rise to Candleford. Based on the first book of Flora Thompson’s trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels, this heart warming play was first performed at London’s National Theatre in 1978 and was nominated for two Olivier awards. Seen through the eyes of young Laura Timms, the play follows a day in the life and relationships of the farm workers, craftsmen and gentry of the fictional hamlet of Lark Rise at the end of the nineteenth century. It is the first day of harvest, and the villagers celebrate with the simple pleasures of music, song and dance, creating a moving and evocative picture of a forgotten England.

One of the great plays of the decade, The History Boys is set in a school in the North of England where a boisterous bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys are attempting to gain entrance to Oxford and Cambridge whilst fending off the distractions of sport and sex. DEATH OF A SALESMAN
by Arthur Miller. Directed by Ian Grieve.
34 years ago travelling salesman Willy Loman climbed into his car to chase the American dream: running on hope and ‘riding on a smile and a shoeshine’ into the land of opportunity. This is the journey of his life, told in one day. Willy, now 63, returns home for the last time to his family, with his memories, his daydreams and his terrible fear that somewhere along the road he might have taken a wrong turn. Written by Arthur Miller (The Crucible, All My Sons, A View from the Bridge) Death of a Salesman is arguably his greatest work. Described as the first great American tragedy, Death of a Salesman helped Miller gain the reputation of being a man who understood the deep essence of the United States. Addressing the painful conflicts within one family, it also considers the cost of blind faith in the American Dream. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 and still punches with full force 66 years after its premiere.
★ Tickets £14.50 to £22.50 plus £1 per ticket bf
‘Willy Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He’s not the finest character that ever lived. But he’s a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid.’

THE TOBACCO MERCHANT’S LAWYER
DRACULA
by Iain Heggie, starring Benny Young (Coronation Street, Waking the Dead). 1780; Glasgow is booming but the American war is looming. The city’s wealth is dependent on American tobacco. Will the great port survive? This question is NOT addressed by Enoch Dalmellington, more concerned about marrying off his dreich, pious, humourless daughter Euphemia, affording his pew at the Tron Kirk and what to do about Mistress Zapata’s scurrilous predictions about Glasgow in 2008. ‘Women will be attending university, the poor will all have water closets and tobacco smoking will be banned in public places...’ “..a brilliant satire.” Joyce MacMillan, The Scotsman
by Liz Lochhead, based on the novel by Bram Stoker In the spring of 1893 a young English solicitor visits Castle Dracula in Transylvania for what he believes to be a routine deal with the nobleman Count Dracula. He soon realises that he is not a visitor at all, instead a prisoner to the deadly Dracula, who sets off to find Mina, his finance, and her sister Lucy. Can someone stop Dracula before he unleashes his supernatural powers on his first victim?

JANE MCDONALD Friday 3 September
For two decades, Curtis Stigers has demonstrated time and again that the lines between jazz, pop, soul, rock, blues and even country are not as clearly defined as they may seem. In a trajectory that began with pop/soul albums in the early ‘90s, the vocalist-saxophonist-songwriter has spent the past several years cementing his reputation as a formidable jazz singer – one who recognizes the value of the story within the song, and the countless ways in which that story can be told.

30TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR
An enormous commercial success, the band took te ‘80s by storm with their brand of jazz funk driven by Mark King’s trademark bass lines, and with their roots firmly set in the underground soul scene of the time they helped change the face of the music scene in Britain.
Throughout his whole career Johnny Cash chose to work with only one band. The Tennessee Three are synonymous to the Cash legend. Led by Bob Wootton who toured the world for 30+ years as right-hand man, confidante and lead guitar player to his friend Johnny Cash this is the most authentic homage to THE MAN IN BLACK. The boom- chick-a-boom guitar style, intimate stories and the driven belief that ‘The sound must go on’ are all there and combine to provide a not-to-be-missed experience for the millions of Cash devotees worldwide.

JIVE – SALSA – LINDY HOP – TAP - FOXTROT. THIN LIZZY
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS SEATTLE-BASED SUPERSUCKERS Thin Lizzy is one of rock music’s most recognizable names after the fiery Dublin band exploded onto the scene with a fresh sound, look and attitude in the late 60s. Fronted by Phil Lynott, the band reached many peaks and influenced generations of musicians with classic tracks such as Jailbreak, Still In Love With You, Cold Sweat, Emerald and Don’t Believe A Word. Many rock historians consider the pinnacle of their commercial success was in 1983, followed by the bands’ premature demise, as they played their last gig in September of 1984, two years before the death of singer/bassist and founding member Phil. Alongside the new lineup, Universal Music has committed to a series of re-issue, deluxe and special releases of classic Thin Lizzy material over the next 18 months.

The Blues Band was formed in 1979, by ex-Manfred Mann group members Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, originally to play a few pub gigs on Paul’s nights off from his then full-time career as an actor in London’s West End. The Blues had always been their first love - indeed, Manfred Mann backed Sonny Boy Williamson for a short time. Tom’s first band, The Roosters, also included a young Eric Clapton. Paul & Tom called on Tom’s old McGuinness Flint friend Hughie Flint to play drums, and then renowned singer/slide guitarist Dave Kelly brought in Gary Fletcher to play bass guitar. Hughie has since retired, and Family and Medecine Head stalwart Rob Townsend has taken over on drums. Seventeen or is it 18? albums later, they are still going strong. 2010 saw them make their seventh appearance at Glastonbury.

Here they offer a chance to enjoy the sheer richness of Mozart’s musical imagination by performing two utterly different piano concertos - the stormy, operatic drama of K466 and the near Beethovenian breadth of K595 – Mozart’s last piano concerto.

SCOTTISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA MOZART AT THE PIANO
Berlioz Overture: Béatrice et Bénédict Mozart Piano Concerto No.18, K.456 Beethoven Symphony No.3 ‘Eroica’ Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony was conceived on a truly ‘heroic’ scale by far the biggest symphony ever composed up to that time. The soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.18 is Sofya Gulyak, the brilliant young Russian winner of 2009’s Leeds International Piano Competition. BBC SSO Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles opens the concert with Berlioz’s sparkling overture to his opera Béatrice et Bénédict, based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

BRITTEN AND VAUGHAN WILLIAMS
May Kay Yau New Work Britten Piano Concerto Vaughan Williams Symphony No.5 Russian conductor Vassily Sinaisky, a popular visitor to the Music Hall with the BBC SSO, tackles the most lyrical of Vaughan Williams’ symphonies, the beautiful, mystical Fifth. A short new piece specially commissioned from the winner of last year’s University of Aberdeen Music Prize is the curtain-raiser for Britten’s virtuosic Piano Concerto. This is barn-storming young man’s music, written for the young composer himself to play at the BBC Proms, it has the ideal interpreter here in Steven Osborne. This concert is part of sound, North East Scotland’s contemporary music festival.
