OPEN GLASGOW & THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART COLLABORATIVE OPEN SOURCE DESIGN PROJECT

PROJECT CHALLENGE: We were charged with analyising and making a critique of the open source data produced by Open Glasgow in the context of the 42 Ideas produced by the 4 hackathons in the areas of Health, Energy,Transport & Public Safety which were specifically aimed at improving life in the city.

We were then asked to transform through further research, analysis, critique and design those ideas, and/or their derivatives, into refined concepts that could be, more readily, turned into reality and in doing so, show clearly in the resulting concepts: • social benefits and outcomes for the city and its citizens • economical benefits and outcomes for the city and its citizens • potential for sustainability over time • potential for long term impact on some of Glasgow’s enduring social issues • the relationship and communication between council and citizen • the broad impact of a open source approach to solving issues

PROJECT DELIVERABLES:

PROJECT LOGISTICS:

As Open Glasgow expressed an interest in the design process by which we would undertake the project, the deliverables were constructed in the following way:

The project ran for 5 weeks (4 days per week) including, in the first week, skills workshops and briefings.There were 19 third year undergraduate students engaged in the project over half of whom are on exchange from partner design institutions from countries including: Japan, India, Sweden, Israel, Germany, Portugal, Italy and France.

1) demonstration through presentation the method of analysis and critique of the open source data and the hackathon ideas 2) demonstration through presentation the method of transformation of the ideas from the hackathons into refined ideas and how these were informed by further research into detailed concepts 3) demonstration through presentation of the detailed concepts and speculation on how these may be further developed to fruition

The project was organised, by the students, as an open collaboration with specific groups formed for the exploration of each domain and an overarching co-ordinated structure to communicate the project as a whole.

They have called this OSD Colony.

TRANSPORT

THE WEE CARD

The Wee Card is a new travel ticket that will create an integrated public transport system in Glasgow.

Thanks to ITSO technology, users will just have to swipe over scanners to enter the gates at stations or to pass the driver’s check on buses.

Subscribing to the service, users will get an anonymous two-part snap card and a personal profile on the Wee Card website. They will be connected through an identity code to be verified online to protect their privacy.

The Wee Card will reflect Glasgow with its aesthetics and features.

Card holders will be represented by our city’s most well known animal, the urban fox. Different types of profiles, identified by a group of foxes, will be available to reflect all citizens

To pay a journey the traveller swipes at the beginning and at the end of their ride, to calculate fare.

To top-up the card can be used the Wee Card website or specific touch screens positioned at bus stops and stations throughout the city. These hardwares will even let the user check their credit, profile, timetables and maps.

After every journey, the fare is converted into an amount of points that travellers collect.

(1£ = 2points) A reward system regulates the gaining of points, providing bonuses for the users who reach certain goals.

Points can be lost when the user behaves improperly but flatmates and families will have the chance to connect their online accounts to collect points together.

PUBLIC SAFETY

GRITTY TOURS GLASGOW

We want to form a toolkit that improves the situation for the homeless community, how they are percieved by themselves and by others. We believe that by destigmatizing homelessness it will increase the feeling of safety for all parties.

We intend to do this by delivering a service that is based on factual research, understanding Glasgow’s own homelessness community, and by drawing on concepts that are proven to work on other locations. We aim to work together with the homeless community in order to enable co-creation, because we believe that they have the best understanding of their own needs.

The concept that we produced aims to be inclusive, tangible, a long-term solution, and actively develop skills that can be applied to build and foment careers. Overall, our goal is to create

a service that can be used as a tool to help people and find a oneway path through homelessness.

We designed a service that aims to integrate homeless people, city council and the public.

The service is a platform for the homeless of Glasgow to become the guides for tourists and locals around the city. They will give a unique experience of the city, sharing their personal story and places.

In the long term, “Gritty Tours Glasgow” aspires to Improve economy situation by providing skills and employment to homeless and support local business; Raise awareness to social care issues; Improve public safety by creating more activity in the suburbs; and improve the ‘safety feeling’ by integrating homeless community with the public.

GLASGOW ENERGY WEEK

Our concept is to create the “Glasgow Energy Week� to tackle the problem of fuel poverty.

During the week there will be events, starting with a Light Half Marathon.

All these events raise money that will go into the Glasgow Energy Fund, which will be used for people in need, either through direct financial help or through

spending it on making their homes more energy efficient.

Alongside helping people in fuel poverty, the events in the week raise awareness and educate people about energy while strengthening the community spirit.

This will be an annual event that engages the citizens of Glasgow.

HEALTH

DEAR GREEN PLACE

Our goal is to tackle the issue of mental health and unemployment in Glasgow by designing socially viable, low足cost solutions that are easy to implement.

Allowing spare land to be used for community gardening opens a door between the council and the community and provides opportunities for volunteers to garden all over the city.

By creating an organization and providing leadership to the community, volunteers not only enjoy the health benefits but also, literally, the fruits of their labour.

In the long term building a strong city gardening community would empower the residents and create value at low cost, which provides opportunities for entrepreneurship.

By promoting the movement with the help of competitions between different areas, events like street parties participation in festivals and community food events, involving various schools and colleges and through tie足ups with existing small businesses it is possible to create a healthier, more sustainable Glasgow.
