As a major corporate center. Houston is home to 23 Fortune 500 companies. The Port of Houston, one of the region’s greatest assets, ranks as the nation’s largest port in international tonnage and second in total tonnage. Houston’s infrastructure is also strengthened by three airports, which form the sixth-largest airport system in the world, and a massive trucking and rail system that links the southern, south central, midwestern and western United States. More than 600 trucking firms operate in Houston, and two major rail systems operate 14 mainline tracks radiating from Houston. Houston’s employment base has become increasingly diverse. In 1981, the economic base was dominated by energy-related businesses with nearly 85 percent of all jobs in those sectors. Today nearly half of all jobs are in non-energy fields, such as business services, technology, aerospace, medicine and manufacturing. Houston offers a richly-diverse pool of highly-skilled, multilingual, multicultural workers. Nearly 25 percent of all adults have completed four years of college, surpassing the national average, while the median age is three years younger than the national average. More than 90 languages are spoken in Houston. Houston is one of the few U.S. cities with resident companies in theater, ballet, symphony and opera, with exciting performances all season long. Houstonians receive an extra artistic bonus since two or more of the entities often perform together, resulting in an even more phenomenal production. Houston boasts proudly of its award-winning and internationally acclaimed performing arts groups and invites newcomers as well as all area residents to enjoy the excitement of a symphony, the grace of a ballet, the passion of an opera and the emotion of a dramatic performance. Located downtown, the 17-block Theater District is home to eight performing arts organizations and more than 12,000 seats. Only New York City has more seats concentrated in one geographic area. Throughout Houston, a growing number of venues make performances easily accessible.
Houston also shows its devotion to the arts through a full complement of art museums and critically acclaimed galleries. Almost midway between Reliant Stadium and downtown, Houston’s Museum District offers a range of museums, galleries, and art and cultural institutions, including the City’s major museums. Approximately 4 million people visit institutions in the Museum District every year. Spend a day in the Museum District and be inspired. The Houston Museum District is one of the largest museum campuses in the country. It includes 18 institutions within walking distance of one another. Houston is known internationally as the home of one of the best medical communities in the world. That’s not surprising since the Texas Medical Center (TMC), the largest medical center in the world, is just 10 minutes from downtown Houston. TMC is housed on 675 acres, and is home to 42 nonprofit and government institutions, including 13 teaching hospitals, two medical schools, four colleges of nursing, a dental college, a college of pharmacy and a college of optometry. Altogether 4.8 million patients visit them each year. In fact, there are more than 85 hospitals in the Houston area with more than 19,300 beds, including those in TMC. These facilities employ more than 100,000 health care professionals, almost seven percent of the Houston-area workforce. In addition to TMC, Houstonians have access to high-quality public health prevention and treatment throughout the City. The Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) has a variety of health centers and multi-service centers strategically located across the City of Houston. Services at these facilities may include family planning, dental, sexually-transmitted disease testing, immunizations and the Women, Infants and Children’s Program (WIC). Patients are advised to check the web site or call the facility as services vary from location to location. HDHHS also inspects food establishments and swimming pools, enforces outdoor and indoor air quality standards and issues a weekday pollen and mold spore count. The department operates Vital Statistics that issues birth and death certificates.
